  1. Zbik seemed tentative all day. Either he doesn't understand his position, or he has to "think about it". Thinking about it is a killer, because as fast as the game is, you just don't have time to think. And he doesn't have eyes in the back of his head to make up for that fact.

  2. ... I just got home and for the past 5 hrs couldn't wait to vent. The play calling and clock management in the past 2 games has been worse than HORRENDOUS... Before anyone responds to this I understand that we "should" run the clock down and kick the field goal and "what If" we fumble or throw a pick and we lose BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!! This team isn't going to make the playoffs, we are all aware of that and that's OK, we're not supposed to .... So people can respond to this and say that "what if" we tried and lost, but I'd rather have tried and lost than pass up an opportunity to let Luck shine and get even more confidence!!!!

Absolutely, Steve. Playing not to win creates a culture of losing. When that happens, it doesn't matter how talented players the players are. If you try, and fail you learn. If you don't try, we might as well have Jim Caldwell back, and hire the homeless off the street to play the game (of course the fans will find other teams to root for - teams that do try to win games).

  3. We're already jello.

    Keep stirring Grigs!

If you keep stirring the Jello, it will never set up. I understand upgrading due to talent (potential) evaluation. But after a while (pretty soon now, IMO), we're going to have to coach-'em-up and let-'em-play.

Seems there is a lot of hand-wringing among the fan base. Maybe the Jello reference was toward those fans?

  4. I actually thought there were a lot of positives.. its a learning year. I promise by years end this team will be much better

I agree there were a lot of positives.

The D was aggressive, stayed in their lanes, and the tackling was better than I've seen in decades. Given the Bear's talent at RB, I thought we did well for our first outing, away. Pass D will certainly improve after the new players learn each other's names.

The O-line play should improve with time - but face it, not everyone on the O-line will make the Pro-Bowl. And, the game will "slow down" for Luck after a couple of games. The real game is much faster than preseason, especially against a good team.

I think everyone should smile about game one.

  5. Looking back at the history of other teams with rebuilt o-lines, how long did it take them to come together? It will probably be 4 - 6 (maybe more) games before that look of utter confusion goes away. Then, the penny drops, and the light comes on ...

Hopefully, the o-line is spending time together away from the field (and not just in the training room).

  6. I have respect for the writer of this article, he is spot on many times and follows teams closely and knows what's going on. Our O-line is bad, I think we all know that but he destroys any hope I had of having a .500 season. I think we are in for a long painful season. Still a very good read.

That's why we actually play the game! Prognosticators (love that word) base their opinions on what they see here and now. But, things will change during the course of the season - experience will be gained, injuries will happen. I don't know who believes this stuff, let alone who would PAY someone to write it.

  7. Freeney was a huge liability today. Still playing like he did in the Tampa-2. Biting on everything, undisciplined in his gaps and not holding the edge. Not giving up on him yet, but I wouldn't be upset if they trade him and upgrade at another position

Old habits die hard. Freeney is (and always has been) undisciplined from years of poor coaching. He relies only on his natural ability (and father time is not helping that). That's not going to cut it in a defensive team strategy. So, either he works as a team member within the strategy, or does what he does with another team.

  8. For the decision to pull the starters against the Jets and not go for 16-0?

I for one and still pretty sick about it. We are probably the only team (or one of very few teams) in professional sports that wouldn't go for a perfect outing.

    Has anyone here forgiven them?

    NO!

  9. Fleener is small for a TE and will not become a mauler. He needs to get better at position blocking. It was one run where he didn't drive the guy back but he took him out of the play by cutting him off for 1 second. He would be very effective.

Small? 'scuse me? 6'-6" is small for an NBA Forward ... mebbe. At 252 lbs, he'll probably gain a couple ( to a dozen) pounds over his career.

  10. The D is shaping to be a less talented version of the 2009 Ravens. Great pressure, terrible coverage, and average against the run.

The D was focused more on playing their positions in a new scheme, and played very conservatively. Good move for the first preseason game. Football isn't "just add water" to a few players ....

  11. Kudos to all the coaches and the GM! Everyone seemed well prepared for the first preseason game. Very good tackling! Good, if cautious, player positioning (it is the preseason, after all). It may not be obvious, but it seems the strengh and conditioning, along with position coaching - needed to prevent injuries - was very good, too. The main difference this year, over the previous nightmare, is that it seems to be a team effort, not just a bunch of individuals at the same field.
