  1. So, I am beginning to see Elway is managing the cap well, Broncos are not nearly in that bad of a shape as I thought they were in.

Well, some people have been saying it repeatedly - including Elway. Most just like to jump to conclusions because "my GOD, they signed ANOTHER free agent. They must be cheating.

There was a reference to RFA Harris getting a "nice raise" now. There may well be motivation on both sides to lock him up before he's a UFA.

  2. Has Peyton ever taken a pay cut or restructured his contract in his career to help the team save money so they can afford to bring in other players?  Maybe Peyton should.

I doubt that anyone in the history of the sport has ever "taken a pay cut to help their team". Don't even start with the Brady nonsense - we've had that argument on here 50 times already. Lets wait until he's actually playing for a reduced amount before elevating him to sainthood. There is a vast difference between cynical salary cap manipulation and charity.

Restructure? Repeatedly actually - although those events were no more acts of charity than Brady's. More relevant is the fact that he is making a good $7-10 million per year less than what would be considered FMV in this salary cap structure based on what other QBs are making.

Maybe Peyton should just be paid to do his job like everyone else in the league, without average joe's deciding for him that he's "made enough."

  3. If I were Elway I would have kept DRC and signed Verner. Two very good CBs for a little more than the price of Talib.

That would have been great, but what makes you think it's realistic? They negotiated endlessly with DRC for days. Common sense suggests that he was asking for way too close to what Talib got. Add in Verner, and I don't think it would have been a "little more". I think it would have been millions more - at a position where they will need to lock up Harris pretty soon for a chunk of change as well. Too many other holes.

  4. Now see I hate that because obviously the people who say it didn't take the time to look at the stats.  Because if they had looked at the stats they would see he was actually the 2nd option the whole time.

    Last year

    Player           Rec          Targets

    D Thomas      92              143

    E Decker        87              137

    W Welker       73              110 - Missed 3 games

    J Thomas       65                89 - Missed 2 games

    K Moreno       60                74

If you want lets expand out Welker and J Thomas as if they played all 16 games based on their previous averages.

    Welker       Rec: 90    Targets: 135

    Thomas     Rec: 75     Targets: 103

So Welker and Decker are about even with Decker getting 2 more targets but Welker having 3 more catches.  Which is to be expected because Welker if he had theoretically played all 16 games would have gained 958 yards based on his average, while Decker gained 1288.  Welker was the short yardage guy to throw to and as a result caught a higher percent of his passes.  Decker was more of a big play guy then Welker.

J Thomas isn't even close to Decker's numbers in receptions or yards.  Neither is Moreno in terms receptions and receiving yards.

Decker was clearly the #2 receiver.  If Welker had played 16 games he would be 3 shy of Welkers receptions but put up 330 more yards then Welker.  His yardage gives him the edge on Welker.  J Thomas and K Moreno don't even come close and arn't in the discussion.

Moreno's rushing touches don't count in this discussion because if you start counting that then he got more touches then all the other guys combined.

Decker was not at all the 5th option.  He was clearly the #2.  Now I will say I question his ability to be a true #1.  But saying he was the 5th option is just not factually correct.

That kind of analysis has nothing to do with anything. I watched most of the games. And you DO include Moreno because we are talking about offensive weapons, and Moreno was one of the yards-from-scrimmage leaders in the league.

D.Thomas and Welker are two of the most frightening receivers to the opposition in the entire league, and J. Thomas is extraordinarily explosive for his position. He's considered an up and coming star.

Decker is a nice player, great size, great willingness to get in tune with Peyton and do whatever is asked of him, and presumably better than Caldwell or he wouldn't have been starting over him. But he's basically a possession receiver who has a tendency to drop the ball.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't want him back. I'm just saying that in an offense where two other players are going to be double covered before he is, where a third can explode for a TD on any play, and the RB is a big part of the passing game, Decker is "the guy who only has big days when the defense was ignoring him". How does that translate when he doesn't have an all time great throwing to him.

There are a LOT of competent WRs in the league who could thrive in that offense.

  5. You think they will make Welker their #2 and Caldwell the slot/#3 guy?

I will say there isn't any question they got worse at receiver.

Not a chance in hell of Welker playing anywhere but in the slot. He is exceptional in the slot and I doubt that it would translate. Swap them and you've downgraded two positions instead of one.

But I'd also be astonished if Caldwell didn't put up similar numbers to Decker - who was essentially the offenses FIFTH option. How much could they realistically pay him? A high"ish" draft pick for depth (and the future), and perhaps a cheap vet just in case should be all that's needed.

On offense, the oline is more of an issue. Curious to see how they adjust for Beadles, and concerned a bit about depth. Also concerned that about Hillman needing to step up. I wouldn't be surprised if Anderson becomes the #2 back.

  6. Something seem's awful fishy in Denver. They sure do keep finding a way to keep signing high dollar FA's and never seem to run out of money. I heard several radio guy's today also questioning where this money keeps coming from and how they are able to sign these high priced FA's every offseason.

    : haha:

    "It's a conspiracy I tell you".

In addition to Bert's (I can't get used to that, I'm sorry) comments, don't forget that much of the quantity of FA's they've signed have been for very short deals. They are likely giving up somewhere in the region of 14 people who were at one time brought in to be starters, and/or ended up being counted on to play key rolls for an extended period of time.

Out with the old, in with the new (and better).

  7. They already have Rahim Moore and Duke Ihenacho. Oh well, guess they wanted to upgrade.

"Oh well"? This is as significant as last years tremendous Vasquez signing!

Duke was a disappoint for them. They lacked physicality on D and Ward brings that.

I like Duke, but he's a 24 year old UFA. It was a pleasant surprise that he won the starting role in training camp, but Carter was injured and Adams is getting up there. I'm not sure to what extent they were "disappointed" in him. I think that "reserve" is where he should have been in the first place, and that he'll still be an important contributor.

One whiffed big time on a critical playoff play in 2012, then went on IR in 2013

The other is more of a strong safety. They weren't going to teach old dog Champ new tricks, they had to upgrade, especially considering how TEs had gone off against them the last 2 years.

Of course Moore was (and is) their starting FS, so his deficiencies don't have much to do with this.

This is really a replacement for Mike Adams - and a significant upgrade at that.

  8. I wonder what his price would be? I'm going to guess Denver would want a 3rd or 4th plus a conditional pick next year.

Yeah I seriously doubt that they would be foolish enough to give up the 33rd pick in the draft for Brock Osweiler.

It'd be highway robbery if they did manage to get the pick from us, unless the kid becomes the next Matt Schaub (in terms of stats of course). I'd rather us draft a quarterback than take one of these guys that has been riding the bench for years now...

I hadn't been paying much attention to this story, but actually it makes a lot of sense for both teams.

The Broncos drafted him in the second round, they've put two years into developing him, they aren't looking to dump him - teams are coming calling, he was taken well before Wilson, Foles and Cousins in one of the most promising QB classes ever, and he came out early so he's only 23 (14 months younger than Andrew).

Don't confuse him with a career fringe/backup - - the only reason that he hasn't had a chance to show anything is that he's playing behind a HOFer, and apparently he's shown quite a bit in practice. The only reason that the Broncos would even consider getting rid of him is if they were concerned about him leaving as a FA before Peyton retired, and decided to churn him and draft another QB (or if they really like their #3). There is no chance that the Broncos are asking LESS than that #2 pick - although I imagine that it's possible that they'd take that high #3 and another pick.

Frankly it's entirely reasonable to conclude that the Texans might not want to pass on Clowney in order to re-invent themselves around an undersized running QB with an attitude problem. It's also entirely possible that Osweilor is legitimately a better prospect than any of the "pocket passers" in the current draft. What would be wrong with essentially taking a "once in a generation" DE prospect #1 and a solid 23 year year old QB prospect #2?

  9. watch the video, mcafee says he hardly ever punted and had to completely learn how to punt in the pros or the pro way and sucked. he goes on to say how he could only punt like 4 yards starting out in training camp. lots of kickers and punters are undrafted and turn out fine. I dont think wasting a pick on someone who never punted pro style and admittedly struggled a lot with it at first was smart, he probably wouldnt have been drafted. if you really think mcafee or any punter is worth SUBSTANTIALLY more than a 7th round pick then i dont know what to say to you. i dont agree with spending anything more than a 7th on a kicker but in mcafees situation i wouldve passed. I just do think investing millions into someone that has never even done what youre asking them to do at any level and to learn how and do it at the professional level is smart but like i said it worked out.

pollian did a lot of dumb things towards the end of his career (hiring his son) and the whole lets build the smallest defense ever concept never really worked out. I dont hate the guy, but like our owner has said, we probably wouldve had more rings had he built a balanced team and not fudged up multiple drafts

I have no need to watch the video, I accepted your description of it the first time at face value. I wasn't refuting that, I just think that your conclusion doesn't make sense, and is shoe-horned in as an excuse to complain about Polian. It would make far more sense to APPLAUD the front office for recognizing his potential despite the nature of his college experience. It's akin to an undersized small college rusher being taken in the sixth round and turning into a pro bowler. Do you criticize Polian for that too?

There are plenty of Polian draft picks that can be criticized - the same as for every GM in the history of the sport. The point is that THIS ISN'T ONE OF THEM, and for you to turn someones thread applauding (amongst other things) the Colts resigning of their punter into an anti-Polian whine is disingenuous and unfair.

There were two punters drafted higher than Pat that year, and eight others since.then. And somehow I doubt that many of them could have simultaneously functioned as an effective reserve for a suspect AV. Using a fifth or a sixth on a punter is extremely common. Some go higher. If you had 20/20 hindsite you could EASILY justify using a fifth (or even a fourth) to lock up a punter that's going to be a mainstay for a decade. Hell, I remember when Rohn Stark was taken in the second (and Ray Guy in the first). Were those bad picks?

A seventh round pick's potential can be barely differentiated from an UFA - the Colts probably decided to take Pat rather than risk him slipping away as a FA because it was a position of need, and/or they weren't sure that he would sign with them. Either way, the salary implications are so utterly trivial as to be completely irrelevant to the decision.

  10. i just watched video on nfl site where pat talks about wanting to kick and he didnt know how to punt when he came into the league. i never knew that. how could pollian pick a guy thats never punted and only kicked and draft him to punt is beyond me. we lucked out there , but it explains why we had some crappy drafts with old bill

What's beyond me is the lengths that some people go to to denigrate Polian.

My recollection is that Vinatieri was a walking injury problem who was starting to get up there in years, and who hadn't been able to kick off effectively at pretty much any point in his Colts tenure. The Colts spend a LOW SEVENTH ROUND PICK on a great college kicker who could do a little bit of everything, and he was good enough to stick even when Vinatieri rebounded.

Considering that he's turned into one of the best punters in Colts history - worthy of substantially more than a seventh round pick - and that he's been signed to a contract that will keep him with the Colts through at least eight years after the people who drafted him were fired, I'd say that your conclusion is almost completely backwards in every respect.

  11. I hated the pickup for Denver when they got him, and cringed every single time he fielded a kick. The fumbles lost stats really don't tell the story. I hope that Denver gets rid of him and I don't want him anywhere near the Colts.

Nowadays virtually every kick goes into the end zone, and I would pretty much beg him to just let it go or kneel. He seemed to make the wrong decision virtually every-time, and seemed to go entire games without making it back out to the twenty (but never learning that perhaps he should take the hint and sit on it). And when he did field it, many times he would lose the ball without being contacted and than recapture the ball - almost like he was dribbling it. And he is SO small that any tackle has a serious risk of knocking the ball loose. You'd literally have your stomach in your mouth every-time he came near the ball.

And he is FAR more likely to fumble when their are people near him, so they took him off punt duty during the season. And he never came close to establishing himself in the regular offense - even as part of a trick play. And he's too small to play special teams on the defensive side.

in other words, it's a roster spot wasted on a guy who does ONE thing, and pretty darn poorly at that. His presence is ENTIRELY about the hope that he'll break a big play. In 2012 he had a few, in 2013, not so much. Personally I think that even at the 2012 production he isn't remotely worth it. The premium should be on someone who NEVER fumbles, who's got the brains to only run when the odds are strongly in favor of his making it past the twenty, and who can contribute other things to the team. A special teams TD can turn a game in your favor, but so can a special teams error. With Holiday, the later significantly outnumbered the former. Why roll the dice, just get the offense the ball and let them go to work.

  12. He isnt anything special. A starting runningback should get 1000 yards if he doesnt get injured. Its not the huge bench mark it once was.

1000 yards is good, its not a record and Moreno was hurt 3 out of 5 seasons and missed substantial time.

A runningback averaging 3.8 ypc would have to run the ball 16 times a game to reach 1000 yards. 16 carries isnt a crazy amount and 3.8 ypc isnt a crazy amount, so when you actually break down the numbers 1000 yards is good, but it ain't spectacular.

I agree in general about the significance of 1,000, but you (and others) aren't being entirely fair to Moreno.

He was fifth in the NFL in yards from scrimmage and in touchdowns, while being effective running, receiving, and blocking. The 3.8 example is valid, but Moreno averaged 4.3. In that offense many of his attempts were on third down after pass-pass-pass-pass. Hard for a RB to get into a rhythm, but all season long he made quick decisions, hit holes hard, and did whatever he had to do to pick up those first downs with impressive consistency. Of course you need to be aware of "Peyton inflation", but he was an important part of their significant success no matter how you break it down. He simply "fit" that offense the same way that Lynch (whom many consider to be a star) fit his, and  Lynch had one more TD and 13 LESS yards from scrimmage. The team that signs him just need to make sure that he fits theirs

He's also a former #12 overall draft pick, so it's entirely reasonable to be as optimistic about his innate talent in the same way that people are about Richardsons - who has never come close to demonstrating the effectiveness that Moreno has. The only valid negative is his injury history, but he was solid all year and he's only 26. He took a big step forward near the end of 2012 and continued to improve since.

In short, I'm SURE that the Broncos would love to have him back, they just don't intend to overpay. Ball may well be better for a fraction of the price - but that says more about Ball than it does about Moreno. It would be fine if he ended up on the Colts, but the price has to be right. The odds are that SOMEONE will overpay, and obviously the RB position is not the position for which to do that.

  13.

Ahh I see, so to make your point you are going to create a completely bogus and nonsensical scenario, try to act like it is the same thing and make your point based on your bogus scenario.

To answer your legitimate points, it is just sports and I'm not pushing to close down the NFL because they draft gay players.  But I do have a choice how I spend my time and my money and it will not be to an company that gets so far outside what I consider right.

As far as comparing to Hernandez or Vick.  All three are wrong and if Hernandez gets off and the Colts sign him I would stop being a Colts fan.  If the Colts had signed Vick, I would have stopped being a Colts fan.

If the team signed Hernandez and Vick I would stand on my head to let management know how I felt. I would have trouble wishing either to succeed because I find their actions so offensive. I knew where you were going, that's why I mentioned them.

My other point wasn't bogus or nonsensical, it was simply an amusing way of pointing out that sexual orientation is a matter of genetics, not morality. Clearly you feel differently, and clearly you are entitled to your view. Debating the source or nature of your beliefs would violate forum rules. Suffice it to say that I say "live and let live" when it comes to religious beliefs as well. I don't care what you do as long as it doesn't hurt others.

Just some perspective though - I look at it this way. I consider "moral issues" to be pleasurable temptations that people have to willfully ignore to demonstrate good character. Fortunately I've never had any problem doing so.

I'm not "tempted" by homosexuality. I'd be as likely to cut off my private parts as to engage in sex with another man. The thought of either is utterly repugnant to the point of being nauseating. This thing is, common sense suggests that a gay man would feel the same way about sex with a woman. I have no right to condemn them for that - in fact it's none of my business. I'm certainly not going to stand on my head to prevent him trying to earn a living because of it.

  14. Your mistake.  Why would I stop now?  I'm not a fan of the Colts because all the fans feel the same way I do about everything.  But the intolerance of the "tolerant" is quite amusing.

    Why would you stop THEN?

I live an incredibly boring life. If I tried to hold athletes to my beliefs I'd never get to root for ANY team. It's just sports.

But more to the point, we aren't talking about Hernandez or Vick. You might as well be protesting the fact that he's 6'2".

Live and let live. I tolerate people of any height.

  15. He has already made a scene.  How many news reports have you seen that say Player X from team Y is straight.

I will quit being a Colts fan if the Colts draft him.

Perhaps they will, probably not though.  I don't base my values and morals on the reactions of others.

It always amazes me how hanging out on an internet site can delude us into becoming comfortable with people when in fact we know nothing about them.

Feel free to stop being a Colts fan. No need to wait until draft day.

  16. w they have a coach who wasn't hired by the new GM that they havent hired yet..

    OMG

    :headspin:

I know, and frankly that's the key reason for focusing on this as another sign of dysfunction. It would be substantially different if Haslam had simply cleaned house the day that the season ended (if not earlier), but the sequence of events is comically unorthodox. I'll hold off on complete ridicule for now - I wouldn't want Lombardi in the first place and for all we know both new signings are brilliant - but if I was a Browns fan I'd be :woah: .

  17. I don't have any particular objection to them coming out in September.  They probably don't go into production until this summer and I pre-order things fairly frequently.  I won't be buying one because they wouldn't fit me, but I did see some other stuff to contemplate.

How can you say no to a doll that's got the Neard?

    andrew-luck-indianapolis-colts-10-player

Maybe I should buy the Luck doll just so I can shave that damn thing off.   haha  Drives me to distraction.

  18. That's ridiculous. I realize they are probably coming from China, but geesh.

Sorry, I only heard about them today.  And according to the site, they don't ship until September.   :dunno:

They appear to be Christmas sweaters. The company lining up production and wholesaling them NOW makes perfect sense. It's less clear why that particular retailer is pushing them.

  19. Acrylic?  Well, maybe that is asking too much, lol

But yeah, I hadn't done any research, so my opinion was conjecture only.  It just seemed to me that 7 months is a LONG time to wait on a shipment order.  My knee jerk reaction was that they're putting off the delivery date in hopes that you'll forget you ordered it.  Pessimistic, but you're right.  If I was really serious about it, I'd research it...and I just may =)

If anyone is genuinely interested - but concerned - I could probably do a drive by. The office appears to be kinda-sorta in my neck of the woods.

My Mom used to knit virtually continuously as well. In fact if memory serves she made me a Colts sweater - I'm sure that I have it somewhere.

It would probably fit my left thigh.

  20. Wow, that is garbage lol.  I don't want it anymore.  Smells like a scam to me.  My grandmother, if she were still here, could knit me one that looked like this in 2 weeks, lol.

But could she do it in "genuine 100% Acrylic.". :D

I seriously doubt that it's a "scam". I don't see pictures, just computer generated designs, so I imagine that this is a small manufacturer who outsources and they aren't in production yet.  $50 is obviously reasonable for a good piece of clothing, but it's hard to tell from that whether it's "good" or not.

    -----------------

Google them and go to their site or facebook page. They produce lots of stuff.

  21. Stop with this common sense stuff!

Every little thing that does not go the Colts way means everyone hates us!  The fact the NFL did not declare us Super Bowl champs every year is just a sign the NFL is out to get us!

:sorry: There is something seriously wrong with my upbringing.

  22. So does that mean the first eight TNF games will all be AFC vs AFC or AFC vs NFC?

Interesting question. I'd be quite confident that the Sunday rules don't apply. They are all about fairly dividing a whole bunch of games happening at the same time between two broadcasters having equal rights.

Thursday is a separate package involving one network and one game. I can't imagine the game selection process being limited. The fact that CBS is involved on both days is coincidental.
