  1. Freeney still runs in the 4.4-4.6 Range even with his Age. I don't think a O-Lineman would catch him. And most QB's aren't gonna try to tackle a defender and risk their own Injury (To a certain extent). Only one's who would try to tackle are the WR's, TE's, & RB if he's on the Field.

Back to the QB tackles, a QB 9 times out of 10 will not tackle. They'll pursue to push him out or slow him down, but won't really wrap up. It also depends on who the QB is. Cause Andrew Luck, if you take the ball from his Offense.... you pay a PAINFUL Price. Here's what I'm talking about

Clearly our replacement for Angerererer is already on the team.

  2. I thought the assumption was that he will be cleared to play by the time the season starts, if I remember right. He may not start but he will be cleared to play. That was the risk going in when we drafted him.

So, yes, we still have about a few weeks for that but we have to see him on the field at some point to be able to make an assessment.

I just don't think that an attitude of 'You're injured AND a rookie, so too bad we are going to risk losing you to another team (waiver/IR style),' is quite the same as what happened with Ijalana. In Ijalana's case he was injured, but he wasn't a rookie. Colts management had tape of him last year, and they interacted with him at OTA's etc.

Its all just a cute application of game theory: do the Colts gain more or less by keeping Chapman on the active roster, injured but still capable of coming back by week 2 or 10; do they put him on the PUP list and get him back after six (?) weeks; or waive/IR him, possibly losing him to another team.

    1. Active roster:

Pro: Can play at any time.

Cons: Occupies a roster spot, Colts might not have a chance to see him in preseason/practice to make the proper judgement call.

    2. PUP:

Pro: Can come back after six (?) weeks still earlier than IR if he can contribute. Gives Colts management a chance to evaluate him in practice.

Cons: Colts management have waive someone from the active roster to have Chapman come of PUP. We lose him for six weeks.

    3. IR

Pro: We keep that roster spot open for a whole year.

Con: Chapman can't come back no matter what. We may lose him to another team.

  3. Winner, winner, chicken dinner... :)

You know what we do with project picks that cannot play a down due to health, right? That is my angle. Yeah, Ijalana was a project OL pick from a small school too. He was healthy at least till the Bucs game last year, then he went on IR. This year, you know what happened. That is my point.

People get their emotions tied up to a player, and I understand that. But the reason we kept a roster spot for Bob Sanders in the past was because we knew (and so did other teams) what he could do when he was healthy. We have no frame of reference for that with Chapman in the NFL. Unless we can get one, leaning towards PUP and then possibly IR is an option Grigson will look for, IMO.

I thought getting him to IR was only possible if we cut him. If that is not the case, moving him straight to IR after the final cuts, like Superman said, is a possibility (or PUP first, IR next after 6 weeks is the other one).

Wasn't is assumed when we drafted him that he might be still recovering from surgery as the season began? If you have that mindset, you don't draft him find out he is still recovering, then waive him and give another team a chance to pick him up even cheaper than fifth round money (I assume). There is still a couple weeks to him to recover, and only then will Colts management have to make the decision (shh I know some cuts come earlier, but my point is there is still some leeway time).

If it is possible to directly place him on IR, when the time comes then let us do so.

We don't know what will happen, we can only wait and see.

  4. Yay, 2 rushing attemtps, 2 yards!!!!! Congrats Donald!

Sorry, for some reason, I want my running back to be able to run the ball!

One run he was stuffed in the backfield, with no blocking. The other he took it for seven yards, and had some blocking.

Either you just really don't like Donald Brown or you are deliberately trolling.

  5. I'm hearing the same thing repeated and perhaps overreacting to it, but.....

In the 24 hours since Sunday's first game I've heard dozens of real pure pundits say that they're not going to overreact to the 'plus side' aspects of the Colts win because:

    1.) It was the Rams.

We were the Colts. Number one overall worst team last year.

2.) The coverages were 'vanilla' (by the way, what are chocolate coverages?)

    They are delicious.

3.) It was just one exhibition game.

I think its fair to ask that if Andrew Luck had gone 4-for-8 for 27 yards and an interception, and the Colts had lost 38-3, would the responses still have been the same?

    ...what do you think?

We are Colts fans, so we can afford to be a little excited. They are not, so they can afford to be a little more cautious.

  6. I agree with a lot of what was said. Sorgi did better than others, but he seemed to have trouble saying something smart in a such a short period of time.

John Madden: "The goal of the quarterback here is to get it into the end zone."

Sometimes announcers are ridiculous. At least it was okay for him to be a bit biased.

  7. Anyone know why they wore the "away" full whites?

Home team has the right to choose whatever color jersey they will wear (some caveats). It was hot so, white over dark blue is an advantage they'll take any day. The Cowboys like home whites too I recall.

  8. All the credit in the world to Brown for that play. It was a great play. However, it backs up something people have said about Brown. He's boom or bust and to this point in his career it's been bust way more than it's been boom. With that said he's still young and it's a fresh start. Hopefully he builds on the end of last season and we start seeing a lot more of plays like we did today than we have in the past.

I feel like you are being conservative and not wanting to give Brown too much praise. However, there is no "however" about his play today. There was a dump off with good blocking and great results. There was a run play with no blocking and negative yardage. And there was a run play with blocking and positive gain.

Nothing he did with the ball in his hands can really be counted against him.

Donald brown took advantage of the three plays where he had the ball.

Mewelde Moore played the true "second string back" and looked okay.

Carter was the short yardage back and did his job, don't just look at his 5 for 17 stat line.

Vick Ballard came in and did well with his opportunities, mostly second string against second string but he did well.

Blocking was poor at first, but things gelled up nicely.

  9. Addai = 6 runs over 20yds two over 40yds the rest averaging 20 yds..... 6 seasons with the colts

Brown? = 10 runs over 20yds 4 over 40yds..... 3 seasons with the colts so far

Those arent similar numbers to me at all, i can guarantee you if DB actually had more chances to play while addai was there Addai would not be starting.. to have a RB who can run 25+ times a game and still have that threat to take it all the way? Defintely not addai

Fan base complains about Addai's inability to break the big ones. The Colts new Running back produces more long runs. Colts fan base takes away credit for the long runs and then complains his average isn't very high.

  10. I heard Paganos 3-4 is a lot like a dime package 4-3. Perhaps we should see it in action before saying Angerer and Conner can't play in it.

What do you mean that it is like a dime package 4-3? I'm just curious.

We are pretty loaded with depth at Linebacker , he really hasnt produced since 2008 for whatever reason

    Who hasn't produced since 2008?

  11. I'm rating him on how he played last year when we gave him a shot. He did nothing in zone coverage (almost all of it soft umbrella coverage), but neither did anyone else. The scheme completely hampered the corner's ability to make plays, and made it impossible for us to know who is good and who isn't. I guess that's what the point was: make all the corners irrelevant. It worked.

But on the few plays he actually played closer to the line of scrimmage, and the even fewer plays he was in man coverage, he looked fine. He actually looked better in man, which isn't surprising since he played a lot of man in the pass happy Pac-10. I don't think he was as bad as people think he was.

That said, the staff knows better than I do. However, there's two sides to every coin. It's telling that the Eagles wanted him, and gave up a player who has started 18 games the past two seasons, and his backup. I just don't like the move. I think Thomas is good enough to contribute (I don't know anything, of course), and I think the position is hurting for us more than linebacker is.

It seems like the staff plans to put a lot of pressure on the front seven, though. I'm anxious to see what our defense looks like.

People remember Tim Jennings right? Another pick Polian made in the dreaded second round. Everyone hated him. He didn't produce very well. He was too small. Everyone was excited to see him go, and laughed at the Bears for picking him up...except he didn't suck. He went on to be a productive player. It might have been the system that failed him here in Indianapolis or it might have been the coaches. Either way, people declared him terrible and made fools of themselves.

I don't know how Thomas will turn out, but I'm not going to jump to conclusion or bash him. (Mostly because he is getting paid a lot of money to play a SPORT. If he is good or bad, he is living his dream.)

My endeavor, using math (science!) to try and analyze using the correlation between: team run defense vs Brown's YPC. Unfortunately there is no correlation between the two, with r=0.5111, df=8, and p=0.13. Science!

  13. <3 Edge so much, a hard working player and one with class.

    Stafford, Swinford, Swoofer, Saffin, Safeco...

Its Rodger Saffold (former IU alum and Wikipedia backs me up).

  14. They are better than a hurt Bob Sanders.

That's the thing if Sanders could stay healthy we wouldn't be having this decision but he can't. He's played in 11 games in four years. That's not even a full season's worth heck that's not even 3/4 of a seasons worth and that's counting the Texans game he didn't last more than three series. You have to factor his health into ANYTHING that you talk about when it comes to him because he's proven he can't stay healthy. The man has never played a full season in his career and has only played in 10 or more games twice. Sorry you can't count on guys like that.

Also I am sorry I refuse to think that a guy can miss the most of four years in the NFL and be a player he once was. It's not going to happen. It's over. You don't take that kinda wear and tear on your body and come back and be the great player you once were. This is no different than when fans would call for Edge to come back even though he was well past his prime. Again I understand some players will always have a soft spot in fan's hearts no matter what but that doesn't mean we should bring them back. Summary: Bob was hurt in the past.

Also it's Sanders style that leads to him getting hurt. It would only be a matter of time till it happened again. It's not like he's going to come in and magically start playing 16 games seasons at a defensive MVP level. He's never been able to do that over a sustained period of time in his career it wouldn't just start now when he's at an age wear players just naturally start getting hurt more because their bodies have worn down. Summary: Bob will get hurt again and GoColts8818 believes he can not contribute significantly.

It is a lose lose situation if you have to cut a guy who would have probably made the team to make room for him and then he gets hurt. On top of that even if it works out what do you do when his one year contract is up and he wants real money which he'll ask for? Do you resign him? If so what happens when he get hurts under that new contract? Do you let him walk? If so what was the point of bringing him back for a rebuilding season? Summary: we can't fit him on a 90 man offseason roster, so we shouldn't try to sign him. (Alternative interpretation, If he plays well he will help the team. This is bad because he will probably be gone after his contract that GoColts8818 knows will be for one year, and then our draft positioning will be worse. Sad days.)

Ed Reed hasn't missed nearly the amount of time Bob Sanders has due to injuries and also every off-season you hear Ed Reed talking about maybe retiring. So it's not like he's planning on playing for another 10 years. Also Bethea's upside is much higher than Sanders because he can stay healthy. It's not Bethea's fault that no one pays attention to him. I thought for years we had the most over rated player in the NFL Bob Sanders playing next to the most underrated player in Bethea. Bethea hasn't missed a game in three years has lead the league in tackles over the past three years and is third in the NFL for solo tackles over the past three years. Give me Bethea any day over Bob Sanders and don't sit here and say oh well if Sanders was healthy you wouldn't say that because that's the exact reason I would take Bethea because Sanders has proven he can't stay healthy. Summary: Bethea is awesome. Bethea and Sanders play the exact same position on the field, and it is impossible for them to be on the field at the same time. Ed Reed....Bethea Bethea Bethea <3<3<3 (p.s. DoomOf21 <3's Bethea too!)

I said he wouldn't cause a major spike in ticket tales. I didn't say no one. Yes I am sure a handful of fans would buy tickets because Sanders is back however I don't think it would move the needle that greatly because most people have seen the Bob Sanders act and know it's only a matter of time till he gets hurt again and he's not a guy that is going to take you from 2-14 to 14-2 by himself like a Peyton Manning could. He's not going to make that kind of difference in the outcome of a lot of games. With that said I don't think the Colts are all that worried about ticket sales I think they truly expect to be and will be sold out by the first game with or without Bob Sanders. Also I'd hardly call Bob Sanders an icon. Peyton Manning is an icon. Bob Sanders was a part of a great run who when you look back at his era will be remembered as a part of that team but he's not a guy you are going to list in 30 years when you list all-time great Colts. Summary: Colt's management will have tickets sold out with or without Bob. GoColts8818 has a stricter definition of icon than some people. Bob is not an icon.

The only thing preventing people agreeing with a vet min contract with incentives is potential for future injury. Is this large enough to be a dealbreaker? Unfortunately, I think it might be.

  15. You're right, it's corps. My grammar isn't stellar, as my maiden language is french. I speak english perfectly and it's the language I speak all the time, but because I spoke french first, my english grammar has never been good.

That's pretty much the reason why there are quite a bit of grammatical errors in my pieces, because I only read over a couple of times and my grammar stinks.

Yes, the tight ends will be graded seperately tomorrow, followed by the O-line, then we get started with the D.

Good to know Andy. The problem with trying to evaluate the receivers is that, besides Wayne you don't have much recent data to go on. We don't know much, except they have lots of potential.

  16. Hopefully, no dumb mistakes this time :P

Today's entry is about the wide receivers.

The wide receiver group has a bright future, but lacks players that can help immediately.

Throughtout the last 15 years, the Colts have had one of the best receiving cores in the NFL.

Do you mean core or corps? As in Reggie and Marvin provided a solid core to a larger ensemble of recievers OR the Indianapolis Colts possessed a really good recieving corps as a whole?

Either way, good write up! I assume you are going to rate the tight ends separately.

  17. Brown is the starter.....

Everyone looks good before they play reguarly

Brown average more than 4.5 per carry which is more than enough.

I dont care where he was drafted..he did what we asked last year....and he hanst fumbled

Its hard to discuss the RBs because we dont know if the Colts will be running the ball that much.

the draft would indicate we're throwing the ball a LOT.

But gettng back to Brown,. You dont have to be the clear cut starter. You just have to shwo up and hold onto the ball.

Is this because we drafted replacements to potential recievers we lost? Or when we drafted that running back?

I'm being unfair. As you said Brown was solid for us, and people are way too harsh on him.

  18. We didnt draft the No.1 passing QB in this century and three receivers to run the ball more.

    Nice thread.

5). Showing up in a hard hat and dump truck is cute and all, but, I wish he would have taken it up on himself to fly the guys to Stanford while Luck was still in school in between minicamps and such. A pipe dream I guess.

    8) I'm not buying this for 2 main reasons. Arians & the offseason. If the team wanted to be more of a smash mouth running team then I believe they could have gone in different directions at OC & in the draft. Drafting a QB @ 1 and then TE threats @ 2 & 3 doesn't suggest a concentration on the running game. There were different avenues to take to obtain that goal. One of the reasons Arians was canned in Pitt was due to him going away from the running game and putting the pig in the air quite a bit more than the powers-to-be in Pittsburgh wanted. He's going to throw the ball and I would be shocked if we had anything less than a 55-57 to 44-43 pass to run ratio at the end of the year. Hopefully they will run the ball better than the last couple of years but I'm not so sure of that.

@OP nice thread, well thought out but tempered with caution.

    Concerning thought #8,

    2006: Rushing ypg rank 18th 110.1

    2011: 26th 99.6

    2010: 29th 92.7

2009: 32nd 80.9 (A full eight yards less per game then the next ranked team. Interestingly, only twelve ypg less than the Texans who were first last year.)

1999: 19th(!) 103.8 (Super interesting reference considering Edge had 1500 yards that season.

I don't know why people are thinking attributing a run first, run later, run some more attitude to #8 of the OP. I think Warhorse is just optimistic about the returning to a balanced and run capable (not run heavy) offense.

Also, FJC I think you are just dreaming a little too much about Reggie not going to Stanford. We haven't heard about too much offseason interaction between Reggie and Luck, but fear not. Somebody posted a link were Reggie had Luck and a number of the other recievers chilling at MIami's weightroom. So I'm sure they are getting there.
