  1. Brown had been beasting it. Looks like Trent is starting to come around. Our two headed monster is kicking into gear at the right time.

This is just how poor our running game has been that we claim a guy is beasting it when he runs for 79 yard and just above a 100 yards in combined yards. While it's hwrd to argue with his game yesterday, I withhold beast mode for a 200+ yard game.

I agree that it takes 2 if not 3 RBs in the modern era to successfsully implement a running game. I have no problem with that. However, if you look at Colt games, T-Rich is in the game during critical moments of the contest when Brown should be playing. Its not the fact that they are splitting time. Its how the time is divided.

Donald Brown has earned the right to be in the game during its most important moments. This is the best move for the team. This gives the Colts the best chance of winning. This is not open to debate. For instance, the 4th quarter should belong to Brown. But too often, it does not. That's my only point.

I fear at some point we could lose a playoff game. Because during a critical 3rd down and 1 conversion late in the 4th quarter, the Colts will  run T-rich and not Brown to justify the trade. That's what's going on right now. And apparently everyone can see that but you.

Trich gets to run in these tight packed formations that scream run and there is 8 men in the box if not 9 with a weak middle man style blocking scheme whereas Brown gets to run in more spread formations on delays and draws. I don't understand why the coaches keep trying to out muscle teams with this smash mouth style runs when it nets 1-2 yards 90% of the time and less than that when it's 3rd and 1. I would love to see them spread that offense out 4 wide and a single back with richardson out of the 3rd and 2 and let Trich try and break past just a regular group of guys instead of the gaggle of olinemen shoved backwards and their whole dline, lb'ers and a safety or 2 all in the same spot. We just keep doing the same bad things with Trich and shocked when it results in the same bad result
  2. Lol no. The Jets just have bad scouting. The quarterbacks are what is costing him. Especially Mark Sanchez. Can't blame Geno though. He's a rookie... He might just save him his job for 1 more year

I think the Jets will retain him for 1 more season as they have over achieved this year and as the head coach, he gets the credit for holding together a potential collapse with that circus in new york. Big city, big lights and big expectations, I see them keeping Rex and seeing what he can do with a 2nd year QB thats shown flashes unless Rex says he is still content on starting Sanchez next year regardless.

I would trade him for manusky everyday though, manusky is just simply too vanilla for my liking and is hoping his scheme has 11 star players to make plays instead of a few stars, several good players and a couple fringe players. Manusky isn't good at covering up poor performing guys inside the scheme, they stand out. Look at the pats, they have plugged in just guys and you rarely notice there is a flaw in their game. Several other teams are doing the same thing to us but geez, new england was just getting creative with their scheme last night to dominate.

I don't see a team as conservative as the colts dumping manusky for anyone though and especially after a winning season.

  3. Look at the Dallas vs Green Bay game last week. An official is in perfect position with an unobstructed view of a Green Bay interception, yet he inexplicably makes the wrong call. What was that incompetent ref looking at? Instant replay isn't there to cover for incompetent officials. It's there to correct or verify calls that were close enough to go either way. Instant replay has become a crutch. Refs don't need to be good any more. If they make a bad call, instant replay will fix it. They have become bad at every aspect of their job now.

It needs to be sent to an independent control booth so that ego and fear of looking silly is taken out of play. Look at the play and get it right. Grade the refs from their mistakes and move on.

As for this particular play, if having the ball in your hands, turning up field and having had 3 total steps taken before getting hit isn't an act of football move I don't know how they can ever classify a catch. Secure in 2 hands and moving itbtowards the body on the way to running all in the same fluid motion is a catch, no 2 ways about it. Fulltime or partime refs get that right at any stage of football and this is the biggest stage, the NFL. You can't mess theee things up.

  4. Did I say that?  No.  In fact I said the Colts played a better game.  Don't be a dink.

I just noted, and rightfully so, that the game was officiated in a fairly one sided manner and that's pretty much been the case league wide this season.  No one could dispute the inconsistency and general poor quality of officiating this year.  It's undeniable.  And it's not going to get better until officiating is their only job and their career depends on how consistent and accurate they are.

Oh so they needto be fulltime to be able to see a play in a HD replay booth? Seems like they were better before replays were allowed. Why refs like Triplett have been allowed to continue being an nfl ref is beyond me but being fulltime isnt going to help his eyes and decision making. I agree with another poster, we need a separate replay guy that can review plays in slow speed on a monitor when high speed live plays may have been innacurate.
  5. I thought if the Ravens lost, it was over. I just checked the playoff machine, and you're right. If we win, and the Ravens win, and the Pats lose, we're #2.

After today's game, I don't mind hosting the Chiefs, but would always prefer the bye.

If the mighty ravens couldn't beat the wounded pats at their own home, I have a really hard time believing they can beat a hungry cincy team at cincy. Buffalo has a chance if they bring todays defense but with tom terrific and coach darth Vader, you just can't count them out unless the nfl disqualifies them. The wins this year with the loss of quality players they have lost is ridiculous. The BB schemes are made for avg players and excels with good players. I can't stand the pats but damn do I wished our coaches had the creativity of BB minus the cheating years
  6. His only really bad game was against SD. N even his worst game is better than Vaughn's average game.

Probably but not better considering how much toler makes to how much vaughn makes, production is negligible. Also, at least stiff neck stays on the field sometimes unfortunately. Toler has had a few preseason games and one really standout game early season and then avg at best in his 7 games played this year. You just can't pay 5 mil/yr for a guy to give you 7-8 games ayear that are avg, thats 10 mil/yr kinda if he were to be a fulltime avg player. You can get some quality cb for that.

  7. Next season is a whole other discussion, but have you looked at the stats? We had a 1:1 TD:INT ratio with him in, in 7 games including against Russell Wilson, Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Ryan Tannehill, and Colin Kaepernick. Since he's been out we've only been about 2:1 TD:INT ratio on defense, bolstered by one really good game against Ryan Fitzpatrick, and the best QBs we've faced were Carson Palmer and Andy Dalton. The pass defense has been much better with Toler than without Toler. Period. That isn't to say that Toler is a #1 shutdown corner, but the unit is better as a whole with Davis, Toler, Landry, and Bethea starting and Butler and Vaughn playing nickel and dime.I appreciate that people are frustrated with Toler's injury problems, but we should be focused on trying to win in the postseason. Saying Toler should sit or be cut is basically just cutting off your nose to spite your face. If he's healthy by the time the postseason starts, he can help us win, and until our offseason starts, that's all I care about.

A guy who was getting beat right and left is not the answer to our problems. My summation is that we were early in the season and teams didn't know whst to expect and the defense was fresher early too. Now we have film for teams to see tendencies and we just aren't very good on defense. Toler is that guy people see ss the lucky rabbit's foot, it's a farce, he is avg.

  8. Yes, let's cut a player who when he plays makes our defense much better right before the playoffs because of some arbitrary philosophy of "we don't want guys who get injured."I imagine that would have worked out real well for us in past seasons.Y'know, like, Bob Sanders, for example. We would have been a lot better off if we'd cut him midway through 2006.

Toler was being beat like a drum before going out with an ihnjury and I highly doubt him coming back makes a sizeable difference as too many people keep tossing out here. I would not cut him this far at the end of the season but I would definitely not re-sign him next season, I would cut that salary and move on.

  9. Slow healer and paid too much. Must be cut next because his history dictates he can't stay on the field and we have to resort to using stiff neck Vaughn. Time to either develop a practice squad player or draft a corner but either way you can't have Toler as your expected starting corner at 4-5 mil/yr. Gamble didn't work, just time to move on from it. Seemed like it was a series of 3-1 yr contracts really if memory serves correct.

Problem with the team is they keep putting old retreaded players like Vaughn and Gordy who haven't shown anything and haven't really brought any younger draft picks/udfa guys in to get any experience. Unless we resign Davis, which i think we will, and decide to go sign another #2 corner, we are going to struggle next year at the same spot because we haven't seen the DC be able devise any schemes to cover deficient players.

  10. It's not irrational to think they could win it, however, it's unrealistic to expect that they will. The team is sprinkled with nice talent a a few positions but it's not enough to say we are dominate.

We are set at QB with Luck and we have talent that has been inconsistent at the wr spot on both rt and left as well as the slot. The TE has immense talent and Fleener has stepped up his game immensely but his counter punch TE is on IR and nobody has been able to fill those shoes. At RB, we have a guy who has good power and open field running but has been largely a bust behind a god awful oline and I think it's that oline that is going to cost us the chance at getting to that big game.

The defense just doesn't have a impact playmaker that is consistent. While you could argue Mathis is, he goes unnoticed for large parts of the game. Davis has been good and been terrible all year, he is not a super star but a good piece and probably better with better pieces around him. Freeman has been our most impressive lb but he isn't a ray lewis type game changer. The dline is adequate mostly but with periods of games without rest from an anemic offense, they burn fast.

With the poor play of the offensive line, the mediocre play on defense, a rookie offensive coordinator and pretty much a first year head coach combined with a defensive coordinator who plays a lot of vanilla schemes, it will take a lot to get to the big show this year, let alone win it. I'd guess at leadt 2 years away as well as a few others said but in the nfl, nothing will suprise me.

Who will we get as refs the rest of the year, that may determine a lot ;)

  11. If we are to beat KC at their house this year, our offense better score early and our lb's better be able to defend that short middle of the field and the nt needs to stand their ground in the middle. Alex smith is just good enough to keep drives going long and keep our offense off the field. Who knows what kinda team and schemes we will bring this Sunday, we have shown the ability to beat the best but also the ability to get beat badly by avg teams to and struggle against subpar teams. We will see soon what we got, time to bring the A game

  12. I see the comments about TR getting in a good game today and showing why he was traded. Now I would not call todays game a grest game by him but it was better in the stat line. I see the comments on why do we see other backs produce better when in etc... I would suggedt they use these guys that are out performing him differently, more the change of pace guy. Look at DB stats the game he was promoted to starter over TR. They used the TR game plan and DB was stifled pretty much. That to me says 1. Talent at the middle of the oline (not a shock to any of us) 2. Coaching. Not sure why they continue this pound it up the middle with any of our backs with how weak we are at the POA using the jumbo tight package, it hasn't worked the majority of the year yet we bring it out time and time again. We get yardage from delays, draws and runs while spread out when it appears we are going to throw it. Our game planners just can't swallow the fact they can't just line up and beat the other team straight up cause our personnel isn't good enough to do so but they just won't accept that idea. I say we have to be creative and desceptive in our play calls. Run in a throw looking formation more and butt in the run look but keep it mixed in and quit flipping formations ( same formation just changed to other side) after it works once and then watch it fail. DC are not that stupid, they see what you have done. Good planners will be creative in their play calls because rarely do teams just have such a superior team to just overpower a team when they know whats coming. We just have plain thinkers game planners not very creative guys. It was looking better this week so maybe Pep can learn from being plain most of the year.

  13. Good post.

    My thoughts from the game.

    1. The offense finally scored points on the first drive in how mant games? It was sooooo refreshing to see.

    2. Luck is finally using his legs and making the decision much quicker last few games. This makes dc have to add this element into the game plan now which is good.

    3. Oline has played better 2 weeks in a row now. We certainly needed that to improve in the offense. Reitz injured sucks and hope he getsvto play next week. So the ooine plays better and luck has started to run more, does Lucks running make this line better or have they adjusted the scheme and players?

    4. Wr's. New week, new hero. Nice to see one guy step up to the plate each week. Last week the rookie Rogers had his huge opening game and this week, off and on the squad Whalen produces and could have been bigger if Luck could have been a bit more accurate to him and looked to him wide open instead of into double and triple covered guys. TY stepped up too.

    5. Running game. DB had one really nice run and then a couple into pile runs then injured. TR had a couple nice runs after a run into the pile run. It looks as though his best attribute right now is catching the ball in space and running from there. Btw, thats not a bash on TR.

    6. Defense, they played so much better this week at the corner spots. Vaughn still has that problem with his neck not being able to turn it but both Davis and Butler made great plays out there. Last game against these corners, the great Keenan just threw the ball up over the receivers and they made play after play. The only time I really noticed them attempt this was late into the game against Vaughn and it was a 40 yard completion.

    7. Congrats to Mathis for breaking that team record, he is a tireless worker and deserves it. Congrats to Werner for his sack although it appears that it was an unblocked rush, someone missed their assignment but a sack is a sack. Here is to many more after that taste. Butler had 2 really nice picks, awesome. A sack on a blitz by Bethea, nice to see.Freeman punchef out 2 balls for fumbles, we just couldn't recover them unfortunately but they were balling.

    8. AV nailed his attempts again, just a really stellar year. What is this guy now, 82? LoL

    9. Coaching. Pep seemed to add new wrinkles to the game and I'm glad to see that. Still a ways to go. Manusky added a few new things in as well, good to see something outside of vanilla pudding.pagano, he was there today.

Things I would still like to see improvement on

    1. Coaching. When they put TR in please spread out the defense and let him have a chance to get through a crack instead of hoping he will break through in the junk, I mean jumbo package, we don't have the talent up the middle to make it work.

    2. Coaching, show Vaughn tape of last week when he turns his head, boom, 2 picks. Now show him this week and how he could have had more picks if he turns his head. Point out the difference to him or sit him, he has talent yet is a liability.

    3. Pagano. This man needs to understand his use of time outs and situational use. Last week down in the game, opponent nesr the goal, 4th down they go for it with about a 1:50 left in the half. Shouldvhavevused a time out there but doesn't and they bleed the clock down further then run a play. Worse thing that happens by using that timeout, the other team scores. The bedt thing happens is we stop then, save clock, have 2 timeouts left to move the ball down and attempt to score points. We got screwed by the refs but it's the principle of the job. This week, coach calls a TO with 22 seconds on the clock on a 3rd down I believe it was for what? The only logic I can think of here was he hoped the texans forced a ball and it gave us another chance at a pick or fumble or he felt like 1 more chance at a punt return for a cheap score. Both of those thoughts are like saying I have $100 left in my wallet and I need to pay my house payment, better go to vegas and plave it on #7 in roulette to make a fast profit. Its not good enough reasoning, we were alreading up.

    4. Of all the games I've been to this year, this wasvthe quietest game I've been at. Even winningbthe game, the crowd, including me, was mostly lethargic. Seen a lot of new faces in my area and a lot of children so perhaps this game was the early christmas gift to family members. The people behind me were taking about football and I'm guessing it was the first time they have seen a game cause they were comical in the discussion.

It would be nice to see us win the next 2 and watch new england stumble badly. Them showing the pats losing on the big screen elicited the loudest response from the remaining crowd. If our coaching can continue to improve their play calling and we have some lucky breaks at the right time, we could make some noise in the playoffs.

    Bash away
