  1. Indifferent. He's not the best scheme fit for us, but he's pretty good. Not as much of a playmaker as you'd like to see out of an LB drafted that highly and is more of a 2nd round guy. That said, I much prefer his game to Ogletree's.

I don't want us drafting Ogletree under any circumstances. I think he's got bust written all over him.

I agree 110% about Ogletree. I read somewhere that various scouts have noted how immature he is. He might have talent, but he has to get his head together.

  2. If Lotulelei falls to #18, it might be worth inquiring into a trade up. He can play nose or end and would be an impact addition to the D.

I keep hearing how good Hayden is and that is cover skills may be the best in the draft. I am always leary of players that jump into the first round mix a couple of weeks before the draft. I don't recall hearing much about him during the season. It would be tough to pass on Rhodes.

  3. There is no way I'd trade our 3rd to move up a pick a guard. Really, a guard? Guys RG may be something we need to fill, but it's not a very important position. We have a few guys now for competition, we can grab a guy late in the draft to throw in there as well. Personally I think we need depth at OT just as much as we need more talent at guard. What happens if either AC or Cherilus goes down? Linkenbach, Sowell? Yeah, that'll keep you up at night.

Sorry, and as for trading up in general I don't think it's a bad idea. Trading our 5th we had for this draft to get T.Y. Hilton seems worth it so far to me. So I'm all for Grigs trading up if he thinks a guy is special.

Our right guard is the guy essentially going up against JJ Watt twice a year. You may have noticed how McGlynn was on his butt a lot in the game at Houston.  To the extent Warmack or Cooper is available to where we could trade up, it is worth a thought. Perhaps in the 3rd we could get Winters, Bahkriati, or some other guy that suffices. It is hard to say, but the option generates good discussion.

  4. I am guessing, but to move more than 2-3 spots up will cost us a pick from next year (rds 2-4) plus our 1st and 3rd this year.  With all the teams needing QBs this year, IMO, it would be better to move back and receive extra picks.

I agree with trading back. The whole point of the post was that if all you had to give up was a 3rd rounder, is there a player that you would trade up for. In this draft, I am not sure how much value that 3rd has without regard to the point system. Sometimes a guy falls and I was curious to what extent someone would be willing to trade up.

  5. I would agree if that would be what it takes to move up, but IMO, it will cost us a pick from next year as well.  That, IMO, is to high, besides by trading down, we get another pick as well as Warford in the 2nd, if Warmack or Cooper does not fall to us.

I agree. I would not trade a 2nd or really any pick in next year's draft. If Cooper or Warmack fell, I would have to strongly consider trading the 3rd rounder to move up. I am not sure what the 3rd pick is worth point wise, but if a team like the Saints (who has no 2nd round pick) would be interested in trading down to get an extra pick, maybe we can make a deal.

I am not sure how valuable the 3rd round pick is insofar as how high we can move up with it.

  6. No.  There is no player worth mortgaging the future for or slowing down the rebuilding of this team.

Trading a 3rd round pick is hardly mortgaging the future. If anything, trading up for Cooper or Warmack is protecting the future since Luck is a big part of any success we have. He cannot take the beating he took last year again.

  7. Is there a player that you would be willing to trade up for in this draft? If a player slides to, say 12-15 range, is there a player you would be willing to trade our 3rd round pick to acquire?

There are no guarantees about a 3rd round pick. You might get a solid starter, maybe a solid contributor. Given all the mid-level type talent we added in free agency, perhaps trading up could net us more of an elite level or top prospect type talent.

If Chance Warmack or Jonathan Cooper falls, it may be worth trading up. I like the Donald Thomas signing, but I did not like Cherilus even before the balky knee. One of these guys could show how valuable the guard position can be. Tremendous upgrade to the line.

Another guy who may fall is Star Lotulelei. It seems like his heart issues are checking out fine, but I keep seeing some mocks where he falls into the 10-14 territory.

The final guy I will mention is Barkevious Mingo. He is a boom or bust pick, but he could really elevate the pass rush. A great replacement for Freeney, he is the kind of guy offensive co-ordinators have to scheme around.

I realize trading up is not a popular option. Given all the love Jonathan Cooper seems to have on this site, would any of you trade up for him?

  8. Another mock I wish could be true. I think the only player that may be there is Trevardo Williams.

Bostic will not be there in the 6th. I have a hard time seeing Logan Ryan fall to us in the 3rd.

There is absolutely no way Cooper falls to us. That would be a Christmas miracle. There are too many needy teams that could change course and go OG. The Giants, Cowboys, and Rams surely would take him.

A good try and I hope I am wrong.

  9. I have heard they love Mingo and Warmack. Since Lord only knows what Buffalo and Arizona will do, I would say there is a good shot they get Warmack at #9 and Mingo at #13.

I still cannot see Trufant or Rhodes falling to us. Minnesota will surely go corner at #23 if one of the two falls, the Saints are apparently interested in Rhodes, if the Dolphins stay put they may go with one of them. I have a hard time seeing it.

  10. I thought Buffalo was set to draft Chance Warmack.

If they take Barkley, that just means some player is going to fall to the Colts that otherwise wouldn't have.

I read on Bleacher Report that Arizona really likes DJ Fluker, not sure who the source was, but apparently like him enough to take him at #7 good.

I would love nothing more than some of these doormat teams to reach in their selections. It may really help the Colts.

  11. I like it, I wish it could actually happen.

I have a hard time seeing Rhodes make it to #24. I saw somewhere that New Orleans was interested in him. I have no idea about Barret Jones. He might be there in the 3rd. He seems like Peter Konz last year. He may play a year or two at guard before moving to center. I hear scouts are hot or cold on him though.

I like the Da'Rick Rodgers pick in the 4th. I hope he is there. There was an interesting piece on yahoo that someone posted that dealt with how character concerns are becoming less important yet drug offenses are viewed more closely. Hopefully he will fall. DJ Hayden could be a consideration in the first round.

I also like the Kenjon Barner pick.

In closing, I will say that I have read that Quanterus Smith is rising up draft boards. I believe it was Bleacher Report that stated he won't make it to the 3rd round. I really have no idea where he will go. I believe he is coming off a knee injury.

  12. The Shutdown 50 has a nice little piece on Hayden. The article talks about his heart valve tear and how it was discovered and treated. Sounds like a once in a lifetime injury that should never happen again.

This guy has been racing up draft boards. Not tough to see why when you run a 4.3 and have good size and cover skills. It looks like Rhodes and Trufant will be gone at #24. This guy may be worth a look.

  13. If we are able to trade back in the draft, which lineman would be a better fit if we go in that direction? It seems like a number of you want Warfard. It seems like Justin Pugh could be a more versatile alternative.

Pugh is 6' 5" and roughly 310 lbs. He can play guard or tackle. I know much has been made of him having "shorter arms" but he has quick feet and good technique. Given the knee issues that Cherilus and Ijalana have, Pugh could be a guy that could be a huge upgrade at OG yet play OT if necessary.

Warford is 6' 3" and around 340 lbs. He's a more natural guard. Not as athletic as Pugh but stronger than Pugh.

The draft stock of both  of these players varies depending on whose evaluation you read. Suffice it to say that an early 2nd round pick should not be considered a reach.

  14. Absent WR, it seems like any pick would be a rotation player.

IF we were able to get someone like Lotulelei, he would NOT be a rotation player. He would be a starter. There is uncertainty about Chapman's knee, and everyone else is a backup who would play minimal snaps. Star could play nose and end as well. An impact lineman. I really feel that we are going to end up taking Jesse Williams, that is just the feeling I get from what I have read. I feel that Lotulelei is better and the decreased price to trade up represents value. It would be nice to pick up an elite talent instead of stockpiling average players.

  15. Honestly I couldn't disagree more.  WR is by no means our most needed position.  Drafting a WR this year is actually kind of a luxury, its just something that would be nice so we can groom them into something later on.  And we don't have 2 4th round picks, we have 1 and 2 7th round picks an no 5th round pick, not counting any trades.

And why would we draft a "versatile" TE? We have Allen and Fleener.  Allen is one of the best blocking TE in the game and he has good hands and decent speed.  Fleener is a guy who is working on his blocking, but can stretch the field at TE and make a lot of mismatches.  And I don't think we should draft a safety, if its going to be anyone it should be Cyperien in the 1st, but we do need another corner, but OLB and G I think are our most needed in this draft.

I would throw Nose Tackle in there, but I'm just gonna see how everyone does there this year. Josh Chapman, Franklin, etc.

I understand we don't have two 4th round picks. My introduction presupposes a trade back with the 49ers who have picks to trade.

WR is a need position. Wide receivers have a tendency to drop off precipitously near the end of their careers. This draft is deep at WR and the value is particularly there at the end of the 1st. Take a guy that can replace Wayne now and let him learn with Wayne for a couple years. Patton can be a great WR in this league.

The idea for Stoneburner is to get a guy that is under the radar that could be a steal. He was underutilized at Ohio State. I disagree that Allen is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league. That is just not an accurate statement. We often utilized a 3rd tight end even when Fleener was healthy near the end of the season. Stoneburner offers versatility. We will be using a FB more and he can be that guy in the backfield that can block as well as catch passes out of the backfield. He can also line up in the slot, on the line, numerous possibilities. Look at New England, they collect tight ends for a reason. Good ones offer matchup problems.

Also, it would be a mistake not to add depth at safety. I like Wolf. I would not be surprised if we add a free safety actually since Bethea is in the last year of his deal. Landry has an injury history. I think we can get a better backup that Lefeged.

  16. I could see the Lions interested in trading up. If they go with Fisher at #5, they may look to trade up to get Desmond Trufant if he is available.

What about the Colts moving up? What if a guy like Star Lotulelei drops enough to where the price falls dramatically to make a move?

There seems to be an abundance of teams that want to trade back and a lack of teams wanting to trade up, thus the price to trade up should be much less than what the "point system" allocates to each draft pick.

If we could trade our 3rd this year and either a 2nd or third next year to move up and get a guy like Lotulelei, I think we need to make that trade. Tremendous upgrade to the line. Instead of getting two or three good players, we can add one potentially great player to impact the d-line.

  17. I really feel like we need a WR in the first. If there is a good player that drops to #24, we might be able to trade back into the late first and pick up an extra 4th rounder, maybe even an extra 6th to boot. A team like the 49ers have picks they need to trade, all these guys will not make the team next year for them.

Trade back to #31 and take Quinton Patton from Louisiana Tech. The guy dominated the Senior Bowl and just like ten other WRs from this draft is a "Reggie Wayne clone"

In the 3rd, I would love to see us take Alvin Bailey, OG from Arkansas. I am sick of the musical chairs that is played at guard. We have Reitz who is healthy for about 8 games, McGlynn is effective on about half the snaps, and we are better off having no guard out there than play Linkenbach. Bailey is athletic for his size and would represent a tremendous upgrade over what we have.

With two 4th rounders, I would look at Earl Wolf, SS from NC State and Will Davis CB from Utah State. Tough to know if they will both be available, but they would offer solid depth in the secondary. Wolf is 5' 11" and and about 210 ilbs so he has good size. Landry has a history of injuries so a solid backup is a must. Davis has good size and speed. He offers depth with Toler and Davis having a history of injuries.

I have no ida who may be available in the 6th or if we do pick up an extra 6th if we can package them up into the 5th round, but a guy to look at would be Jake Stoneburner, TE Ohio State. I think this guy will be a late round steal. He is 6' 3" and 250 lbs and runs a 4.6 forty. He can line up in the slot or in the backfield. He is a James Casey type player that can bring a lot of versatility to an offense.

  18. Good question. I have seen a number of mock drafts that have him falling and read something the other day where one analyst projected a surprising fall. That being said, I bet the Giants take him.

It seems that he would be a good choice if only because of the "hybrid" nature of the defense. He does not have the ability to drop back into coverage but he can rush the passer with the best of them. I have heard comparisons to Chris Long in St. Louis.

I would not be upset if we took him.
