  1. Regardless of being "garbage time" (which IMO is baloney), Orlovsky's passes were crisp, tight, and on target - something Painter is incapable of. Even the interception was a strong, tight spiral and an absolute great play by the defender (I don't think anyone on our defense could have grabbed and held onto that ball).

Is he our next starter? NO, but he can provide decent backup QB play. Painter will not be on an NFL roster after this season for good reason.....

  2. As someone who has seen almost every game the colts have played since 1984, in my non-expert opinion this is the worst team I have witnessed wearing the horseshoe during that time. It would be more encouraging if they WEREN'T playing hard because that might mean they had it in them to be a better team. It's all up to Jim Irsay right now to make the changes needed, but I question if he has the fortitude to do so.

The most consistently good player has been Pat McAfee, and he'll be lucky to make it to the end of the season if he has to keep making tackles.

We need a competent quarterback as well as significant improvements on offense, defense, special teams and coaching. No single draft pick is going to fix this team.

  3. The buck has to stop somewhere and ultimately it's at the top. I think the old joke term "NaPolian" is, unfortunately, accurate. In both Jim Caldwell and Chris Polian we have high level employees, neither of which would probably be considered the best man for the job. It's all about control, and uncle Bill will not give it up entirely. Mr. Irsay is the only one who can do what needs to be done, and right now it doesn't look like changes are imminent.

  4. The Colts have been able to overcome severe deficiencies in the Offensive line, Defense, and special teams for the past several years. Now, without PM to bail them out, the overall weakness of this team has been exposed. I think it's been a combination of coaching and talent that are to blame for the problems, but it all comes back to who's running the organization. We, the fans have been clamoring for the front office to fix the OL for the past 2 seasons. The defense has been "soft" for longer than that. Special teams have been atrocious for just as long. Yet, aside from talk, little has been done to rectify the situation.

Peyton can come back and we'll win some games again, but without fixing all the other underlying shortcomings it doesn't look good. Right now I think Polian's ego won't let him admit to errors in personnel or coaching. Only Jim Irsay can force changes that can result in fixing this team. We can hope, but I'm not sure if he has it in him. I fear that the only thing that could move Mr. Irsay to action would be when fans stop buying tickets and LOS is only half full. By that time the team will be in deep doodie.

  5. What we saw from Painter tonight is pretty much what we've seen whenever he plays. He's a 3rd string QB. Unfortunately, right now we don't have a first string QB on the roster....

  6. We came into the season needing to improve our OL play, our defense and our special teams. To this point: Defense=LOUSY, OL=LOUSY, ST=LOUSY. These problems are not new, just a continuation of what we've seen in previous seasons. It's either personnel or coaching, but both are ultimately the responsibility of the front office.

Don't be fooled into thinking the return of Peyton Manning will turn this into a title contending team, the same goes for getting Andrew Luck. Without some serious changes, Peyton would be better off to hang it up and retire to some exotic location or get into coaching. My biggest fear is that Irsay won't have the stones to force such needed changes and we'll be back to having the first round of the draft being our most important day of the season....

  7. While it's not the way we want to enter the season, I'm still eagerly awaiting Sunday. As long as the team is competitive and can show improvement in previously weak areas, I'll be OK.

The worst part is probably going to be the whole "week to week" speculation about the availability of #18. The way the organization has strung everyone along in the past should be taken into account. Until he practices and plays, it's going to be a drag.

If the OL has trouble protecting the QB and we can't move the ball it'll stink, but perhaps be a blessing in that Peyton might not be under fire until they've had a chance to get it together.

Other than an extended absence for Manning, I just fear more #&%#&%)@& injuries like the ones we seem to always incur. At the same time it would kind of bite to stay injury-free, yet still have our franchise out of action. Regardless, let's play some football!

  8. I can't say that I have a strong opinion either way about hiring Tressel, there is one thing that seems inconsistent. How is Pete Carroll not being penalized for having been a part of all the cheating at USC? While I understand the sensitivity to appearances and PC approach by Goodell, in some ways it's another hypocritical move similar to the whole Rush Limbo ownership brewhaha from a couple of years ago.

Apparently if you get out of Dodge before the NCAA renders their verdict, you're scot free as far as the NFL is concerned. If you wait too long you have to "do some time".

  9. I just mean even if Peyton is ready to go week 6, maybe he's at 80% because I doubt he'll be at 100% at any point this season, we'll probably be 1-5 or 0-6 then just put him on IR and let him keep healing and go and draft Andrew Luck with the #1 pick.

It would also be cool if we we're the first team to ever go from having the #1 overall pick to having the #32 Super Bowl winners pick the next year lol

While the scenario of picking up the heir apparent to #18 sounds good, I don't see how we could afford to be paying Peyton's big salary AND a #1 pick QB (who wouldn't even be contributing). Realistically it would make better sense to pick the future PM, trade the current one, and use all that money to start building for greatness in the next several years. Obviously, no one would be willing to do that.

  10. This. A thousand times this.

Unless by some miracle our off season pickups make a fairly substantial impact, there is no reason to believe things will be any different. Also you forgot atrocious special teams coverage/returns.

In my gut, I have to agree. I've really felt that we've been kind of lucky with our record the last couple of seasons. However, with all the key injuries I told myself that if we could ever get healthy we should be strong. At this point I just don't see reason to feel all that confident about much other than our kicking game and punter. I'm hoping that our coaches are intentionally "not showing" anything and that on opening day everything will be fine. The whole QB thing is completely different though. If PM is out, we lose to pretty much any opponent since our current backups just don't have it and any QB brought in isn't likely to have sufficient time to become proficient. Even if Peyton begins practicing in earnest the week before the opener, I still think they will be hard pressed to beat any good teams (Texans included) without suffient in-game reps to gel. Plus, there is always the wildcard of injuries. If a key player or two go down (which seems to be par for the course with this team), things could go south very quickly. Maybe fate will be on our side for a change and if any major injuries occur (God forbid), it will be to our opponents.

I hope I'm wrong. I have been before, for sure, but I really don't feel good about our situation at this point. All I know for certain is that I'm ready to get this preseason baloney over with and start playing games for keeps!

  11. Just another "opinion" like we've heard each year for the past many seasons. A couple of years ago when the Titans won the division I'm sure some writer had made the same prediction and figured the Colts were toast - yet we picked up where we had left off the following season.

Depending upon when Manning returns and how well the offense can mesh around him in time, and how the defense takes shape, a few unexpected early season losses could put the Colts in hole they may not be able to dig out of. That said, we had so many injuries and problems last year, yet still took the division. There are just too many variables to be able to predict what the season will hold (injuries to your team, your opponent, your opponents opponents, lucky bounces, how well new coaches can transform teams, etc.) - that's why they play 16.

  12. I'm more concerned about any potential training camp time Peyton may have to miss as opposed to anything else. The last time that happened (2008, with the bursa sac) we could kind of afford it. Our O-line was decent, and we had receivers he could work with in his sleep.

Now we are trying to re-tool our line, and we have newer, younger receivers that he needs every second of practice with that he can get. He's already missed a significant amount of practice with those guys with the lack of team sponsored OTA's, and if he isn't able to start practicing until week 1 again this offseason, we may start slow again the way we did in 2008, and we may not be able to afford that this season.

The lack of timing and cohesion when Manning missed time in 2008 (and early losses such as to the Bears) effectively cost us the season. This team is built around PM and thus has never attempted to employ a quality backup. If Peyton takes 3 or 4 games to get on track, we could be done before the bye. Here's to hoping the reports of him not being close are overblown, but with the history of the Colts not exactly coming clean on injury info I am concerned.

Lets face it, the biggest thing stopping the Colts has been injuries. At least Bob S. isn't around to disappoint again....
