  1. The debate of whether having solid corners or solid pass rush has raged on this forum for a long time. Last night showed the arguement well. The Giants had a great pass rush but Romo was able to move around and buy just a little time and could always find an open receiver. Giants CB play was bad and they got burned. On the flip side, Eli struggled to find open receivers against the cowboys great cornwers and couldnt move the ball. I think the Giants have a better receiver core and a better pass rush but without coverage skills, they were not the better team. I think that moving forward, this could be applied to the futre of the "monster"

  2. If Collie can't come back, we will see a reciever in round 1 or two. Hilton and Brazil are slot and #2 type recievers and we will need to have somebody ready for when reggie hangs it up

  3. It would be fair to point out that Link has put on considerable weight this off-season and from what I have heard, its good weight. He is now around 310lbs if I read that roster right. That's almost 15-20lbs I think. If he hit the weight room hard in order in increase strength, maybe he can hold his own a little better vs DTs. If Link moves to guard and stays there and Bigger Ben is hurt/cut, seems our depth at tackle will be scary thin.

  4. You have to remember what the expectation are for a fourth round player. These guys are usually depth or rotational players not starters. A fourth isn"t some huge price to pay. If this guy could be a solid posession receiver and a red zone threat than it is good value. Remember that we aquired a lot of WR talent but they were all smaller speed receivers. Pittsburg used those types of WR andput up good yards but struggled in the red zone. A bigger WR would help. I'm not saying this is the guy (I actually like the kid fron Cal) I'm just saying the pick isn't solid gold

  5. yeah Revis and Cromartie arent going anywhere unless the Jets GM develops a case of amnesia and Powers wasnt even that good in college under a different cover scheme, he doesnt have the speed to keep up with faster wide receivers and he gets beat easily on double moves, plus we have Wayne for a few more years at wide receiver, I'd like to have Woods but he wouldnt be high on the priority draft list for me, we have O Line concerns, Linebacker concerns and Corner concerns, Freeney is in the last year of his deal, I certainly dont think Reitz is the answer at Guard (prove me wrong Reitz develop a nasty streak) and yes its college but it was a different scheme than the one we ran last year our Corners actually got to cover in college and werent that good at it, people want to say why do I keep bringing up college? I say to that......teams draft players based on what they did in college and what they can do for them, fact is none of our Corners did alot then and none of our Corners did alot now, you dont keep ignoring needs just to draft best player available when its not a need unless you plan on getting rid of a player or a player leaves

Revis has been unhappy with his contract. Unless they franchise him, he might look for the most money. I also meant the corner from Philly. Sorry about that.

  6. Here is a scenario which could really throw fans for a loop. What if Freeney is a beast this year and we keep him. What if Hughes, Hickman, Fugger show they can be OLB studs in the future. Maybe you could take OLB off the urgency list. What if we pick up Revis or Cromartie as CB free agents and Powers has a great year. Maybe you could take CB off the urgency list too. Maybe then you could envision the colts taking Woods or Allen as Lucks star receiver for the future.

  7. I agree that Peyton made receivers look better than they were and Luck may do the same thing but think of what Luck could do with a star receiver. Peyton had Marvin and set the league on fire. After that he made Reggie and others look good but he did have Marvin. If Luck got a star receiver like Woods or the the guy from Cal, our offense would be very dangerous. One of those recievers paired with the guys we drafted this year would provide a great stable of receivers similar to the Packers and Giants.

  8. The times Revis was burned by top receivers was more due to a complete lack of pass rush. Nobody can provide blanket coverage forever. Even an average pass rush would have eliminated a lot of those plays.

  9. 1. Revis

    2. Ngata

    3. Calvin Johnson

    4. Jake Long

    5. Adrian Peterson

    6. Larry Fitzgerald

    7. Logan Mankins

    8. JJ Watt

    9. Patrick Willis

    10. Patrick Peterson

What is very interesting is Revis will be a free agent this year and the colts will have huge money to spend

  10. I think that if everybody is healthy and Brazil and Sambrano play well in training camp and pre-season, the colts will carry 6 WR. Reggie is getting older, Collie has had concussions, Avery has had knee problems. What the colts cant do is pass on a potential weapon. Depth at WR would be huge since all of the current guys have potential issues. The packers have shown what you can do with a deep WR core and the giants have shown the importance of depth

  11. Wasn't Ijalana hurt the same game when he moved to left tackle replacing Castonzo? These kids...and Reitz need the preseason work. Hopefully the injuries do not hold them all back. Reitz is a tremendous athlete!! He needs a chance to learn techniques.....not on the fly...in practice EVERY day!

yep you are absolutley correct. Ijalana filled in at LT and got hurt after about a quarter. Not a huge body of work for all the praise he has received on this board. I really hope he finds a position that works this year. Would really help shore up the line

  12. I doubt he stood out for anyone. The guy played in 4 games, and started...... zero. Then he got hurt. Most fans rarely notice a guy like that. And I include me in that group of fans. Seriously. Ijalana is all promise and reputation. But, now he's got to deliver. Let's hope.

And, for the record, Costonzo played and started in 12 games before getting hurt. Lots of potential, perhaps. But that all has to be realized.

Both kids need to step up, big time.

Castanzo was initially hurt in the Tampa game which was early in the season (maybe game 4?). He did come back but the injury lingered all year.

  13. After Trevor V was cut the colts have a roster spot open. Who do you think they bring in? I'm hoping either a DE or a CB. We all know the corners have taken the most heat and I feel thats justified. But I am also worried about the D line. We are pretty thin at 3-4 DE. Either Nevis or Miola need to work out there. An injury to redding would be devastating. more bodies to play 4-3 DE would be good to. Last year Freeney and Mathis were spelled by Anderson, hughes and the other guy we didn't resign (can't remember). What do other colts fans think

  14. I seriously dont think Castonzo or Reitz have the leg strength you need in the running game

I'm not as concerned about having our LT as a beast in the run game. His primary job is protecting the QB. I think that by taking the time now to fully heal and having a full training camp, Castonzo will be quite solid. Outside of a few members of this forum, he received a lot of praise for his play last year, even with the ankle injury. By resting now and not aggrivating the ankle, he should avoid playing through pain alll season.

As for Reitz, He showed potential but I'm not sold on him. The good thing is we have a number of potential guards. Big Ben, Hicks, Reitz, Mc Glynn, Anderson can all fight for the Guard spots.

  15. At the risk of stating an unpopular view, here I go....

In the first round, here's what I **don't** want....

I don't want a big defensive tackle, like Haloti Nagta.... and I flat-out LOVE that guy.

I don't want a run-stuffing ILB like Ray Lewis such as Monte' Teo... and I LOVE both of those guys too.

I don't want a WR like Robert Woods.... and he's sensational....

Here's why.... big run-stuffing DT's don't put enough pressure on the QB, most pressure comes from the outside...

As for the ILB spot... the way the game is now played, the ILB is now for most players, a two-down position. The ILB comes off the field on 3rd down for most teams. Replaced typically by a safety or a corner... but someone faster for coverage...

As for the WR position... it's dominated by diva's.... look at Blackmon (another DUI) and Floyd (three DUI's at Notre Dame).... with the rules being more generous toward WR's you can still get a very good one in rounds 2-4. And a decent one in the later rounds. Hey, don't blame me, I didn't make up the rules. I don't want Diva's on the Colts. No T.O., No Ocho Cinco.

I think all of those positions are important for the Colts. But they can be filled in either later rounds, or by Free Agency.

For the next two years -- at least -- all I care about is finding pressure from the edge (OLB, DE) and good cover guys (CB) in the first two-three rounds. That's it. Everything else will fall into place. I'm trying not to over-think things. The draft -- as much as I love it -- is only one part of building a team. And this is such a long process, I want to build the foundation the right way.

Pressure the quarterback, defend the pass, and invest in Andrew with line protection, receiving targets, and a running game.

Sorry to sound like a broken record on this..... just offering a different perspective for consideration....

Nice post. I see your points and its hard to argue with some. Regardless of how Freeney, Mathis and Hughes play, I would love for the colts to draft the OLB from Georgia. What a lot of people don't know is that although he is a pass rushing beast, he is also very good in coverage. Lots of great pass rushers is a good thing. Third and long you move Freeney and Mathis up to play DE and have Hughes (if he is any good) and the Georgia OLB playing OLB. That would be 4 deadly pass rushers coming at you. Maybe even switch back to a 4 man front and use these 4 guys much like the Giants with their Nascar package. Huge pressure without having to blitz.

That being said, if Connor doesn't pick up the ILB this year I wouldn't mind an upgrade in the first two rounds. If Wayne really starts to decline, a WR might be a wise pick too. The Giants have drafted pass rushers and pass catchers frequently to have lots of depth and it has been huge for them. One star goes down and they are still okay. Like you, I'm not as concerned about a first round NT. The NT needs to take up space and stop the run. He wont play 3 downs. 3rd round or lower seems wise. If in a few years the team is 10-6 and think that position would get them over the top, okay. Not yet.

    Again, nice post

  16. There is a huge difference between Manning and Freeney contracts. If they kept Manning with his contract, they would have been locked in for 4 more years and the way the contract was set up, if they released him later the cap hit would have been enormous. Freeney has one season to prove himself. I don't think he has to be dominant. He has to be good. Worthy of being a stater and then be paid accordingly. He won't be released or traded prior to the season or during the season. If he doesn't fit as an OLB at all, they will use him as a 4-3 DE in the four man fronts. I see no reason why he wont have success.

To say that it doesn't matter if he wants to stay is foolish. If he truly means what he said, he will take a reasonable offer from the colts. He wont demand top of the league money just like Wayne. If he plays well and wants to be a colt, he will be. No comparison to the Manning situation

  17. I keep reading posts and articles on Freeney that state he probably wont be a colt this year and there is no way he gets resigned here next year. I am going on record to say I think Dwight will be a colt for life. He stated in an interview a while ago that he wants to retire a colt. He felt players should stay with the franchises that toook a chance and drafted them. He even called out Lebron for leaving Clevland. I don't think he is going to leave for the biggest contract. I think he will take a reasonable contract here that pays him what he is worth. What the number will be will be determined by his play this season. I think he will be effective this year in the new system and will quiet all the fans who have written him off.

That being said, unless Hughes emerges as a real player, I think they still draft an OLB in one of the first two rounds as it usually takes time to adjust.

  18. im not so sure we take a cb in 1st round because pagano is great getting the best out of the secondary. hypothetically if we did draft amerson most likely a pass rusher would be taken in the 2nd round because freeney won't be back.

Why does everybody say Freeney wont be back. He said a month or so ago that he plans on retiring a colt. He said he feels sports stars should stay with the franchises that draft them. He even called out Lebron for leaving Clevland. Freeney will finish his career as a colt. The question is how big his contract will be and that will be determined by how well he plays OLB this year. He also said he repects how Wayne took less money to stay.

  19. I wouldn't say we are taking a CB in the first just yet. With the cap room next year, a top tier cb could be a great pick up. There will be a couple coming up for free agency. If we sign one, it would be the best for immediate improvement because cb is a position that takes a couple years to get used to. This situation woould free up the pick for maybe the OLB from Georgia, the ILB from Notre Dame, the NT's from Utah or Ohio State or the guard/tackle from Alababma.
