  1. Almost everyone on this forum (including myself) is making plans for a new center for next year. We keep bringing up big name FA or draft prospects. Lately I keep hearing mentions of Satele looking more and more like being our starter again next year. Im not sure where these reports are coming from. Can anybody point me towards an actual quote or article that might suggest this is true

  2. People keep referring to "free safety" and "strong safety" positions but thats not really applicable to this secondary. In this system the safeties are interchangeable. Both play in coverage and both play up at the line. Just depends on play call. If Bethea leaves, whoever he  is replaced with will need to be able to do the same unless the system changes. Also, I dont think you can count on Howell as a starter. He played well in San Fran but wasn't so hot after that and was hurt pretty quick too

  3. The never take a running back in the first round thing is over done. Yes, this year nobody did. Remember last year three running backs went in the first. Usually first round talent goes in the first round. If our pick is in the tweneties, we got a steal. 15-20, good value. Earlier, not so good but thats not going to happen hopefullly. If it does, we had a terrible season

  4. Castonzo takes a lot of heat on this board. Reporters who cover this team often refer to him as our best lineman. He is far from a weak link on this team. Yes he does get beat at times. He is playing one of the hardest positions in football. He is playing every snap against the other teams best pass rusher and every little mistake he makes shows up huge with either pressure or a sack. If he was constantly being beat by average defensive ends than I would be worried. If premier pass rushers give him a hard time, that's normal. Give him help. Every other team does the same.

  5. I keep hearing Bey is held back by QB play.  In 2012, he had a QB with stats similar to Luck.  His production was very Avery like (which isn't bad just not great -- Avery had his moments last season).

    2012

    Luck    339/627 4,374 23/18

    Palmer 345/565 4,018  22/14

    Avery 60/125 781 3 TD

    Bey    41/80 606 5 TD

I sincerely hope to eat some crow on this at the end of the season, but I'm expecting a very Avery like season from DHB.

You have to remember that DBH missed a lot of time with that concussion. He just got blown up on that one. If he played a whole season, he would have been well ahead of Avery

  6. I think the best value at 24 is going to be WR or CB. There isn't likeley going to be an OL worth the pick unless Fluker falls and our staff feels he could do well at RG. The best OLB will be gone too. Clearly the front office isn't happy with our WR group. They were great in last years system but maybe not in Pep's new scheme. A great route runner with great hands (Hopkins) or a big physical guy with great hands (Allen) would be solid. Rhodes or Trufant would be great in our D as well. Gotta remember WR and CB are expensive positions in FA. Getting talent in the draft would be great.

  7. I think people may have this kinda backwards with regards to guards. Thomas is a LG. Was Mankins back up in NE and was very good. A buddy of mine is a diehard pats fan and he said Thomas was a great LG but didn't play RG at all. When he was signed, both Chappy and Paul K from ESPN said he would unseat Reitz at LG. Doesn't mean he couldn't play right side I guess but why bring in a LG and move him over when our previous LG isn't very good.

  8. He was very solid for San Fran when Justin Smith went out. Very good vs the run. Ok pass rusher. Would be a great pick up as Moala wont be ready for the start of the year and Redding isn't getting any younger. Would help solidify the DE rotation

  9. What do you mean Trufant doesn't play our scheme. He has played man all of his career. Spent the last two seasons playing on an island and was great. Great senior bowl too. He fits perfectly.

Trufant likely doesn't fit our defensive scheme, and Collins likely doesn't make it out of the 2nd round.

I'd be thrilled if Collins fell to us in the third, though.

  10. DJ Fluker really surprised at the measurements yesterday. Lost weight since senoir bowl and arm length was crazy. If he can show the weight loss has helped is quickness at all, he will be a first round lock. Could be very interesting for colts if he lasts to #24. Could be a long term RT.

  11. A few things I completely disagree with and are illogical to me

1.How is Lacy ahead of Montee Ball after the career Ball had at Wisconsin, heck nevermind the fact that Lacy had the best O Line in the country combined last year

2.How in the heck can Dion Jordan be ahead of Arthur Brown Mingo AND Jarvis Jones?

3.Barrett Jones as the 3rd ranked best Center in the country is nonsense since Eddie Lacy is ranked the number 1 running back in the country

    4.Also Ansah ahead of Montgomery?

I'd like to hear why he rated the way he did

    1. Big Bruising backs from the Big Ten often fizzle out in the NFL. Ron Dane is an example. Lacy is seen as being a better overall back.

    2. Dion Jordan has huge potential. Most are putting him ahead of Brown and Mingo. Not many ahead of Jones though. I think you are putting too much emphasis on production numbers in college. Some of these guys only started one year before entering draft. They might not put up huge career numbers but had a great final season. Remember, these guys are what 19 as freshman?

    3. Barret Jones was great for Bama but might not be a stud at any position at the next level. Should be a solid starer though.

    4. Same as 2. Ansah looks amazing now and has only played for a few years. With experience he will be a star. Not concerned about his numbers 2 seasons ago.

  12. Michael McCrary, Marques Colston, Donald Driver, Shannon Sharpe, Brock Marion, Tom Nalen and Adam Timmerman would all disagree with you, do you really want to pass on the potential for one of those types of players for a kicker?

They are the exception to the rule. Most 7th rounders are lucky to make the teams even as a special teams player. If the the kicker from Florida or Florida state are available, they would be great picks. They were both accurate and had range and they played in pressure games.

  13.      I agree that there isn't really a big 3-4 DE available for us in first round. I have said in the past that some of these guys are going to put on weight as they shift into an NFL strength program. When you shift from being a student who can onlt spend a limited amount of time in the weight room to a professional athlete who spends there life training, bulking up can happen.

That being said, there are a few FA I think woould be interesting. #1 is Ricky Jean-Francois. He was a solid 3-4DE for the niners, he is young, and he wont be expensive. I also like Richard Seymour on a short term deal. I like this for one two reasons. First he was an excellent 3-4 DE  for the Pats and second, Moala's knee injury may keep him out of the line up for the start of the season. Jason Jones from Seattle is a solid option too but he is coming off a knee injury too.
