61 people voted #3 = a landslide, sorry haters you lose. People with sense know JB is probably not a franchise QB but also know he is above average and doesn't suck.

You are jumping to inaccurate conclusions.  The the options in the poll were worded badly and some options were left out which skewed the results.  It could easily be interpreted as people think JB is average - below average but there aren't many better options so we are stuck with him until we are able to draft his replacement or something unlikely/crazy happens and a good QB actually hits FA.

So lets say the haters get their wish and JB gets ditched and their QB stinks, then what?

Cut him and keep looking.  I would rather be terrible a couple years and be in position to go after top QBs until we find one, than finish 8-8 (give or take a game) and be stuck at mediocre.

I am going to be disappointed at our FO for quitting on JB if another drafted QB (or Kelly) steps in and plays like Painter next year.

See above ... at least we know and can move on and aren't stuck in mediocrity... and if they play that bad than we likely have a shot at Lawrence. I would be fine with a one win season if it meant we got Lawrence in 2021.

You might be right...but who knows. At $15M...he might look appealing to team over bidding on someone like Teddy.

I wonder if there would be a contending team that would want him as a backup. To do that...the Colts would have to keep him long enough to pay his roster bonus...and make his cap hit next year only $6M for the acquiring team. Of course...the Colts would have to eat $15.5M in dead cap to make that work...which I can't see them doing.

I would be all for a bad contract swap of JB for someone...but I don't know how that would work.

It's just hard to see a scenario where JB isn't on the team...unless Ballard just cuts him and saves the $9M that he can. Ballard has shown that he will do this...but with all the smoke they have blown about JB...it just seems like unlikely in this particular case.

I will preface this by saying I do not think it will happen(even though it should).  But, I can imagine a  scenario where JB is cut.  IF we draft a QB high and we truly make it an open competition in camp between JB, Rookie, CK ... I don't think it is far fetched to think JB would be the 3rd best QB. I don't expect them to truly go open competition though, the loyalty & leadership factor won't allow it.

I feel like the more I read and listen to people on the NFL network, Indy Star, Stampede Blue, DAZN (Pat McAfee), the more I believe that Ballard and Reich do really like JB.  I also believe that after listening to them, that this year will almost not count against JB (I know the JB haters will be furious about this) because it has been an unprecedented amount of injuries to the skill positions.  He literally has no weapons.  I know that people say that he should be able to overcome this, but he is throwing to practice squad players and players he doesn't really know.

Because of this, I believe that they will build around JB for another year and maybe draft a QB in the mid to late rounds.  Then next year is JB's make or break year and if he thrives, you resign him, if he fails you move forward with who you have on the roster or who you draft next year.

Let's hope not.  Not only do I feel like this would be bad a bad move for the team.  I also think it might start hurting them in the fan engagement/interest department.  Starting JB with a highly drafted QB is a strategy even non-JB supporters can probably get on board with; going into the season with JB as your unquestioned starter and no back up plan might cost them ticket sales, viewers, merchandise sales, etc.

    Wow, another bash Brissett thread.

    This is getting old.

It's almost like he plays the most important position on the team that the forum was created to discuss ... just crazy.

They are in a rare position with all the draft capital. They can do basically whatever they want this year and next. If they do things right, they could be a very different team in 2021. And I'm not sure I'd bank everything on Tua with their early pick. I'd much rather have Lawrence next year.

Definitely wouldn't be banking on Tua (im not really a Tua fan even without the injury), but if were Miami and he fell far enough (and into my lap) I might be tempted to gamble and take him with the intention of sitting him for a year then makeing him #2 behind Lawrence or using him as trade bait.

That's why I suggested they might pass on QB. They have 3 picks in the 1st, and have a ton of holes. If I were them, I'd upgrade both lines with two of those picks. I'd pass on QB, take an OT with the first, DL with the second or trade back, trade back the third (both trade backs for a 1st next year and 2nd this year), and see if Rosen can do something with an improved OL and supporting cast. If not, go all in on Lawrence next year.

This would be the best option for them.  If they were patient enough to sit through one more year of being bad they could trade back and push their 1st round picks into next year, rebuild most of their team with young players and grab Lawrence or Fields next year. They would be stacked and ready to take over that division when Brady is gone.

Yep. I live here too. You see, Indiana, we a little bit screwy when it comes to things like this. We generally don’t take kindly to being led on & or bait and switched. For example, the Paul George thing a couple years ago, the John Elway thing a couple decades ago and even the McDaniels thing last year.

If Luck had announced his retirement WITHOUT going thru warmups and throwing the balls in front of fans just half an hr before, then I think it’d gone over a lot smoother than it did. He, whether intentional or not, toyed with the fans in that regard. If he hadn’t gone and done that, and assuming the leak still happens the way it did, I know I’d at least given him more of a forgiving tone.  I’d still been disappointed but I wouldn’t feel toyed with. Granted my feelings and opinions are irrelevant in the grand scheme, I just know I’m not the only one that feels this way.

Will i I eventually stop talking bout it, yeah. Eventually

Yep ... count me in the "he's a quitter" group.

The only way I ever see Luck as anything but a quitter would be something along the lines of him announcing he was coming back and saying something along the lines of "I just needed a year to get right, now I'm ready ...etc .. etc ..."

Well, what I expected to see, has so far shown itself. The third option is what I expected the majority to pick.

You can do both 3 & 6 and 3 & 4... some of the choices aren't mutually exclusive.

I tried to word this in a way to give all fans a correct answer for themselves.

Think you are missing some or should be 2 questions.

My choice would be JB not the guy, let CK finish season, and draft a QB early, if CK shows anything let him and JB (and rookie if good enough) fight it out in camp to see who starts season and who is #2.

    There, fixed it for you.

A very small minority period.  The majority of people I talk to outside this message board and outside my group of friends (people at sports bars during games, random people who strike up a conversation when I'm wearing Colts shirt/hat, etc...) , are not excited at the prospect of JB possibly being the starter next year.

There is no guarantee next year would have the same outcome as this year. There was a lot of things that went wrong in this season and Jacoby isn’t the only reason. Chances are even if we draft the future Jacoby will be the starter next year. A lot of strange things have happened this year that has  lead up to our record. Just look at the turning point. We were 5-2 going into the Steelers game. What happened Jacoby got injured and our WR stated dropping like flies. You can’t underestimate the importance of Ty. Pascal has done great but he isn’t what you would call a playmaker. The things TY can do to fake out defenders ect makes him a great player.  We are missing actual playmakers in the 4th quarter of games. No matter what they do at QB I am excited if Jacoby starts next season and to see what he can do with heathy and upgraded weapons. Plus not having all the drama with Luck two weeks before the season.  Yes he has had some issues but to me I give him a incomplete with everything that has happened.

I think you are part of a VERY small minority.

Absolutely serious, really.  So instead we keep drafting WR's,  although might look great playing college ball, but are unproven in the big's, and think the oline, and defense we currently have are going to last forever?

A 3rd and a 4th for a 32 yo WR, when we weren't even sure what we had at QB (and what we might need to spend to get one) ... sounds like a good way to lose your job if you are a GM to me.

  13. RT w/ future left tackle upside - would hopefully give us a pro bowl RG + great depth at both guard and tackle... Glowinski is a low end starter but would be a top end back up, and Smith would be able to slide back to RT if needed.

Terrell Basham, Quincy Wilson, Paris Campbell, Rock Ya Sin, Tyquon Lewis. Ballard has whiffed on many high draft picks, which is to be expected. He should have signed a few FA's for insurance.

Campbell, Ya Sin, and Lewis are still undetermined.

I would trade back 3-5 spots to get another decent pick..... Love should still be on the board

I don't think you take a chance and try to play that game if you have identified a QB that you truly like. If anything you you move up a few spots to make sure you get your guy if there is any chance someone could jump you and steal them.

Got to admit the scouting report from 2016, is exactly what we are seeing this season.  We have a good defense, great oline, decent receivers, although currently depleted by injuries, suspect special teams, but soon to improve dramatically.  My fear is we spend another season evaluating JB, or draft a wonder boy who doesn't work out, and waste another season with the team we already have.

My hope is we sign a PROVEN, NFL QB, which it seems several will be available in the offseason, and take a shot at the ring.  This fanbase needs it.

This again? I don't get where this idea comes from. Who is this "proven NFL QB" that's available(or will be)?

I am definitely in the replace JB camp, but I just don't see any proven NFL QBs that are available. There maybe someone unsuspected come free, but IMO none of the QBs who are generally considered available or likely to be this off season are worth going after.  Bridgewater, Dalton. Foles, Newton ... A couple are slightly better than JB, but not enough of an improvement to make it worth the investment. Might as well just keep JB for the last year of his deal while you roll the dice on a rookie if those are the "proven NFL QB" choices.

maybe r. wilson if they dont win the sb or maybe rivers

What world do you live in? R Wilson isn't for sale Seattle isn't trading one of the best QBs in the NFL... Maybe would should ask about Mahomes too. :sarcasm:

Rivers has looked terrible this year... If the Chargers are getting rid of him why do we want him. The Chargers team is pretty good so it's not like they would be letting Rivers go because they are ready to blow it up and rebuild. The Colts team is younger than the Chargers so if they are willing to goto the draft for a QB that should give you second thoughts about taking the QB they are willing to let go.

Any other "proven above average QBs" you think we should make a play for? Those type guys rarely hit the market. Kirk Cousins is the only recent one I can think of off the top of my head, and I don't see any out there for this coming off season. The exception is old or big injury risk: which we don't want.

That scarcity is why teams overpay in the draft for QBs every year even knowing the odds for him underperforming or busting is high.

I think people here should acknowledge that Ballard may ultimately decide Love is not the guy.

    Or...

That Love is the guy, but maybe some other team values him more and picks him before Ballard does, no matter the round.

    Or....

Love decides to stay in school.

There are all sorts of reasons or scenarios that may indeed happen between now and next April.

I have considered this option as well ....

Love is Ballard's fall back/2nd choice and he's not tipping his hand as to who is his first choice.

  19. 5 minutes ago, 2006Coltsbestever said:

I don't have a problem with that because I see many wanting Love or someone else. This draft by Ballard will have everyone watching.

Yep, I think he already knows all eyes will be on him even more so than usual; and even with his past accomplishments I think this off season will be the one that defines him, whatever he chooses to do.
