  1. Any word yet on how Wayne's contract will hit the cap? Sounds like it's $7.5 million signing bonus over three years, so the prorated bonus should be $2.5 million. Don't know about the base though.

I have no facts, but I would think they did something similar to what they did with Mathis where they had a lower cap hit in the first year. With 10 million over 3 years in base salary (from what I have heard) it will probably be a small number the first year, since they pay him 7.5 million in signing bonus (again only what I have heard) that year anyway. It would make sense both in real money and cap hit.

  2. wonder if we could sign someone like say mario williams and pay him 5 million the first year and defer the additional amount for the following yearts when we have more cap space? That way we could get Nicks. Landry. Grubbs. or others like that

If the team has the space and the player is willing to do it, then the contract could be worked to where he received a guaranteed bonus in year 2(2013).

It should not be that hard to get players to sign contracts with lower cap numbers in 2012 and higher in later years. In real money the players get the signing bonus the first year so they would not need that much salary, but in cap numbers the bonus is spread out over the whole contract. Therefore the players get a lot of guaranteed money early on, but the cap hit comes later.

For the Colts who have a lot of cap space in 2013 and with the cap being significantly larger from 2014 and onwards it would be a possible option.

  3. Here are mine 2012 cap numbers. How much difference is it to the numbers you other guys have?

    Contracted Players: 37

    Cap Hit (contracted): 60 288 429

I used spotrac.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/cap-hit/ (which has been updated the last few days) with some changes: Mathis 2012 cap hit to 5 750 000, put a signing bonus on Bethea with a 2012 cap hit of 1 825 000, removed Jerrell Freeman (he is like a rookie anyway) and put on Seth Olsen (565 000 cap hit), Ricardo Mathews (490 000 cap hit) and Terrence Johnson (450 000 cap hit). Changes came from NO PROMOTIONAL POSTING ON THE SITEsite/content/salary-cap.html except Mathis, who I got from this forum.

    Rookie Players: 16

    Cap Hit (Rookies): 11 550 000

I used Frog’s numbers, only changed number of rookies since I have more contracted players.

    Dead Money Players: 9

    Cap Hit (Dead Money): 37 827 821

I used spotrac.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/cap-hit/ (which has been updated the last few days) with one change: Manning’s number to 10 400 000.

    Colts Cap Hit: 109 666 250

    NFL Cap: 120 600 000

    Colts Cap Rollover: 2 500 000

    Colts Cap Space: 13 433 750

  4. 1) I supplement my main source with this:

    http://www.coltsauth...salary-cap.html

    2) The Kerry Collins dead cap space for 2012 is $1.25MM

    3) All pro-rated bonuses (signing and miscl) accelerate to the cut year if done pre June 1. You don't pay their annual base salary, but the bonus pieces accelerate.

So, for Addai, as an example, you eliminate his base salaries in 2012 and 2013 of $2.9 and $3.07, respectively, and you accelerate his 2013 bonus proration of $1.86 forward into 2012 such that the total dead cap hit in 2012 is $3.72.

    4) Yes, but not for each of them. Allocate $1MM for pcik #34 and $0.5MM for pick #65.

    5) I don't know of any dead cap space for Kelvin Hayden.

I congratulate you on your initiative to get behind the numbers.

    Thanks

  5. If Chap's tweet is accurate, the Colts have now cut Addai, Brackett, Bullitt, Clark and Painter.

So here is my revised team salary cap that takes all the above into account:

    1) 32 contracted players with a 2012 cap hit of $86.01MM

    2) Add Luck: 33 contracted players with a 2012 cap hit of $90.21MM

    3) Add the premium above rookie minimums for picks #34 and #65 of $1.5MM and we have cap at $91.71MM

    4) Add 20 remaining players to bring the roster up to a 53, all at rookie minimum salary and we have a total team cap at $99.51MM

    5) Assuming the 2012 cap will be $119MM, this means we now have about $19.5MM in cap space to spend on FAs.

I’m trying to make my own cap and have some questions:

    • Using your source, I found only 27 players under contract, who are the last five and what are their cap numbers?
    • What is Kerry Collins cap numbers?
    • What are the new cap numbers for each of the five newly cut players? (Does any other bonus than the remaining singing bonus count for dead cap?)
    • Is the 1.5 million for #34 and #65 in addition to the 390,000 for each of them?
    • I read something somewhere about some dead cap after Kelvin Hayden, is that correct?

  6. I would take whatever the highest offer for him is, as long as it’s at least a third rounder.

    • He's approaching the end of his career.
    • He's counting 19 million dollars against the cap.
    • He's a free agent next year.
    • He might not want to change schemes and stand up at OLB.
    • He might not fit in a new scheme.
    • He might not like the direction the team is taking for the short term.

The best thing is to get something for him and get rid of the cap hit, to help the rebuilding.

  7. ...it's about how it's being done.

Irsay needs to be a man of his word and let Peyton finish his career where he started it, and on his terms. RG3 said that it would be an honor to hold the clipboard behind such a legend. That is respect, and that is what Peyton deserves.

Payton must be treated with respect, but that is not the same as saying that the franchise need to do what is best for him before they do what is best for the team. The Colts are more important than one player, even Payton Manning. If after getting all the information they believe that letting Payton play his last years on the team is best for the franchise they should do it, but if they don’t believe that it’s the best solution for the team they should not do it just because it's Payton.

  8. There will always be a good option to draft a good QB.

I don’t think it necessarily would be so easy. There is a reason why so many NFL teams are struggling to find a franchise QB. Sometimes it’s none, and there are seldom more than a few really good Qbs in the draft. They normally go early, which means that the Colts have to have another bad season to get the same chance again.

  9. Since I haven’t followed the Colts for very long I wanted to see some of the previous games. Recently I’ve seen some of the games from 2011/2012 and something I've noticed is that not all the players have the same jersey. I am talking about the blue home jersey. It seems some of the players have a jersey with a lighter blue color tone, and those jerseys also have shorter white stripes on the shoulders.

Just wondering if there is a reason for this?

  10. Yeah that's what I'm sayin'. For only being 6'2 and having probably like 5% body fat, I would think he'd have to look like some Super Street Fighter character or some s*** to weigh 320.

You'd also think a guy who can squat what he can would have some good explosion off the snap. Put him at NT and see what happens......lol.

I have also read that his weight might differ a lot depending on what he is doing (boxing, strongman). From 260 – 340 lb, don’t know what is more normal, but he was heavier as a strongman. He is massive.

  11. haha

Maybe the Colts should try to get Arild “Hulk” Haugen. He is the strongest guy in Norway, is 6 ft 2 in tall and weighs approximately 320 lb. He is capable of squatting 880 lb, a deadlift of 880 lb and a bench press of 550 lb. Haugen has now retired from strongman, to seek a future in boxing. In his first career fight in 2009 he won by knockout 45 seconds into the first round.

  12. If the Colts decide to go for both, I think they should make it clear to Luck that he will get his chances in games now and then. They will have to use more rotation of the QB spot than before. I don’t think Luck would learn so much if he never gets a snap.

    He can get some starts:

    • If Peyton is injured or sick
    • If the team have either made the playoffs or don’t have a chance of making it
    • A few starts a year when the Colts meet bad teams (you always have PM ready to turn it around if it doesn’t go well)
    • In the pre-season

He can get some playing time:

    • If a game is probably won or lost
    • If Payton have a bad day or just hits a ruff spot
    • In a rotation with Payton where PM gets most time, but Luck also gets some
    • Maybe he even get some playing time as a tactic to try to get opponents of their game plan

  13. Coby Fleener

Projected earlier this year as a 2nd rounder (not sure where he stands now or where he will stand after the combine), I see this as an excellent opportunity. As you said, it is likely time to move on from Dallas and perhaps a trade could be cooked up. Fleener provides a scoring threat as well as an increased blocking presence. Add to that the inherent value of providing Luck with some familiarity (regardless of Manning's outcome).

Being that he is a TE, many think he may slip later in the 2nd round, however, I believe parity may strike as many teams are looking for that big receiving TE to have their own "Gronk affect", so a team may move on him ahead of his projected slot. IF we retain Wayne, this seems to me to be the best option for providing immediate receiving help as well as much needed blocking from a pliable position.

    Very good post.

I agree with your analysis 100%, and I would be very happy to take Fleener with the 34th pick if available

  14. In this scenario I would trade the pick for more picks and get a promising QB in one of the two/three first rounds. After that I would hope PM could come back and play/tutor the new QB before he eventually could take over the ropes or the team could find someone who could.

I think that without a top QB prospect it would be more important to get Payton back for a couple of years, but you would still have to start planning for the future without him (which might come sooner rather than later).

As it is now the Colts can move on with a top QB prospect, and then PM might not be needed as much.
