  1. DB has impressed me. And to the people saying he's only running well because he's running out of spread sets, that's a lie. The last 2 weeks, he's been featured more and has had good runs out of the same power formations Richardson runs into linemen behind

I also think DB has done very well this year. But I will like to point out that against the Broncos, when running more out of the power formations, he averaged 2.1 YPC. So I think your post is a little misleading on the comparison of the two backs.

I don’t point this out to slam DB, but rather to give the people who dislike Richardson something to think about.

  2. Andrew Luck's father, Oliver Luck, played in NFL Europe. Also called the World League Of American Football. WLAF existed from 1991-2007.  There were six teams in the league: five based in Germany and one in the Netherlands. Andrew Luck himself grew up in Germany. Clearly, the USA is not the only one who plays this fantastic game VF4. The NFL officially cut all ties with the WLAF on June 29, 2007.

Obviously there is an execption to every rule. Oliver Luck was a back up quarter back, Andrew looks to be great, but he also played highschool ball in America.

There is an American football league in Norway, and the winner of that league has played in a competition with the best teams from other European leagues. So there are probably several leagues, but they are small and probably not that good.

  3. As I told someone else in this thread earlier.  Welcome to free agency.  99 times out of 100 guys don't take home town discounts to go to a new team.  It's why Polian avoided it so much because he knew to get free agents you were most likely going to end up over paying to get them to pick you.

Also worth saying just because a guy signs for more than what we deem their market value should be does not mean we over paid them.  We have no idea what those players real market value is to the rest of the league.  Grigson is in a far better position than us to know that.  For example the Titans seemed to think Hasselbeck was still worth 5.5 million because that's what they were trying to get him down too.  We got him for about a 1.5 less than that.  It's not unreasonable to think that other teams weren't offering what we were offering for him.

Again, and again Nobody if this doesn't apply to you then it doesn't apply to you, I've been here since 2003 and just about every off-season I would listen to fans complain about how we needed a real back up QB to Manning in case Manning got hurt and how we didn't have one.  I then watched fans scream for Polian's head in 2011 for that reason and got his head.  Grigson is doing exactly what fans have been saying we should do for years.  Make sure we have a proven back up QB just in case we need him.

Also Kravitz reported tonight that the Colts are still in play for the mystery WR after we signed Hasselbeck so I wouldn't give up on him just yet.

I will start by saying I really like what the Colts have done in FA this year, I think they have gotten better and gotten better at the right positions. I also like signing several cheaper mid-level guys and not a few pricy big name guys.

But I think they have overpaid several of the new players, and if you look at this year’s FA it’s not like it normally is where everybody overpays everybody. There are several players who have been overpaid (Miami and Cleveland comes to mind), but there are also several players who have gotten more reasonable contracts. In my mind the Colts have overpaid most of their guys, and since most of them were not the top available guys at their position I would have thought they could have been obtained a little cheaper.

Of course I don’t have all the info the FO has, and I’m not saying they went crazy, but I still think they could have saved some cap to use on other players or the future. The new players might earn their deals, but you should not pay for what they might be, you should pay for what they are worth now.

It’s not that big of a deal, but I’m not thrilled about all of the contract sizes. JMO.

  4. Super Bowl Champions is the preferred title. Does anyone really use world champions when referring to the nfl....besides the marketing guys at the nfl/networks?

I don’t know how widely it is used, but I have heard it a lot from players, coaches, commentators and alike after a Super Bowl win.

  5. Where does the term world champions come from when we talk about the NFL?

I always think it is funny to hear people around the NFL call the Super Bowl champions for world champions, when all the teams and probably more than 99 percent of the players are from the US.

I have no doubt that the best team in the NFL is the best in the world, since it is a game as far as I know (I’m not sure of this) that is only played on a professional level in the US and Canada. But it is kind of silly to call themselves world champions when they haven’t even played anybody from another country, not even the best team from the CFL (a game they of course would have won).

I don’t mean to offend anybody, but I come from a small country where all the best athletes compete internationally, and most of the national championships are not regarded that high. So I was just curious when and why they started using the term world champions.

  6. I'm not going to guarantee that whoever came up with that 25 mil.$ number was correct, but I do think we must be back loading the contracts. If we add Francois today and maybe another guard at some point, then I'm going to be ecstatic with our offseason. It also won't surprise me to see some guy's released once get through all these signings and the draft. That could potentially free up more money later.

I would also like a DE and another G, the only other signings I could see was a veteran WR (not Jennings) or a backup OT. No matter what more happens I feel they have really set the team up nice before the draft with plugging a lot of holes. Now they can go BPA in the draft and use it to get better overall talent

  7. I seen a report somewhere yesterday that said we had around 25 mil. left before we added Landry. I get the feeling that most of the contracts we've added are heavily back loaded and much of what really matters is guaranteed money, which will be spread out over the yrs. of the contract. The advantage of being back loaded is, we could release any of those guys in a couple of yrs. and not take a huge cap hit. We very easily could still have 20 mil left. Now we need to add in 5-6 mil for draft picks and leave some in the tank for in season moves that will need to be made. I can see us easily having 10-12 left to spend  and depending on how they structure any new contracts we may add, that could be spread on a couple more guy's without any problem.

Ok, I did not see that. The only number I have seen on cap hits from the new signings are Cherilus, who apparently is counting 7.5 mill against the cap in 2013.

  8. We still have like $20 million left over right??? That's a lot of money to bring in a few more people I believe

Yep something like that. If we sign Ricky Jean Francois today I think that number goes down to around 13-15 million.

That's still a lot of money!!! Which brings me back to my original point... why do people think we overpaid? Lol

$13 million (if used right) could bring in another 2-3 players

I think a lot of people think there is more cap space left than it is.

The reports before Free Agency were of free cap space around 45 mill, and on Tuesday before Free Agency opened NFL Network showed the Colts with around 37 mill.

37 mill is probably taking into account the tag and tenders; Pat McAfee (tag), Josh Gordy (EFA tender), Jeff Linkenbach (RFA tender), Cassius Vaughn (RFA tender), Joe Reitz (EFA tender), Martin Tevaseu (EFA tender), you also have Fili Moalas 1 year extention. All this singings account for something about 7-8 mill.

In Free Agency the Colts have signed players for about 26-27 mill in yearly contracts. There is no way of knowing the exact cap hit before we get some more info on contract structure, but it can be used as a rough estimate.

The Colts also resigned Butler (have not seen any numbers on this contract yet).

When you take into consideration that the team needs 3-4 mill for the draft, there is only about 5-10 mill left for more Free Agency signings and backup for the season (trades, injury replacements, +++).

I am no expert, but at least there is not 20 mill left for Free Agency signings. If someone have more or better info or I have missed or misunderstood something feel free to set me straight.

  9. this is crazy. i don't believe there is that much difference in punters to justify this much money. i would never do this.

We may yet replace Vinatari this year and certainly next year with a kicker who takes over the kickoff responsibilities, making McAfee less valuable.

Pat does a nice job on punts, but I don`t see him being that much better than a Minimum wager.

MUCH Rather spend the $2-2.5 M on a position player.

I definitely think it’s smart of the Colts to keep Mac. He has good value, especially if you take everything into consideration.

    • He’s one of the better punters
    • He’s a great guy to have in the locker room
    • He takes/can take kickoffs and can be a decent backup kicker if the starter goes down
    • He’s a good tackler, one of the better on the Colts special team and probably the best of the punters in the NFL
    • He’s young and can be with the team for many years
    • Punter is the cheapest position to have a top 5-10 guy in the NFL and a more important position than most fans think
  10. Ok well I just checked my math and I'm still coming up with the same figures so I'll just write it out and maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

    TOTALS

I think the number for Luck is way off. He got a 22 mill contract for 4 years, how can that be 1, 4 mill cap hit for 2013 (I think that's just his base salary without his signing bonus part of the cap hit). From what I have seen it's more like 5 mill. It might be more wrong numbers, but mostly the others looked to at least be in the ballpark.

So it’s probably their numbers that are off and not your math.

  11. I think Hughes could be a decent starter if he gets a full season and I would be ok with that. But I can also see the merit of upgrading the position by bringing in a better new guy. It all depends on who the Colts could get and at what price.

What I don’t understand is why some here want to cut him. In my opinion he is a good contributor even if he’s not a starter. He is definitely good enough to be a rotational/backup guy. It doesn’t have to be either starter or cut. I am pretty sure most if not all NFL teams would find him good enough to be one of 53 players on their roster, and the Colts is not the team with the most (deepest) talent in the NFL.

    JMHO

  12. Here are my thoughts on the Colts needs:

These thoughts are with the starting point that the Colts would at least resign: Pat McAfee, Fili Moala, Joe Reitz, Darius Butler, Winston Justice, A.Q. Shipley and potentially Jerraud Powers.

There are a few more guys I would like the team to resign but, they are not that important to this discussion and not big resignings.

    Offensive Guard

At the guard position the Colts need two new starters. It might be a possibility to only get one and hope some of the young guys (Ijalana, Anderson) could handle it or use Reitz  as a stop gap. But it would be best to get two new guys, where at least one definitely need to be ready to start right away.

    Offensive Tackle

I think Castonzo should stay at the left side and I think he will develop into a good starter. On the right side I feel Justice is ok but an upgrade would be good. No matter if you get a young guy to learn behind Justice for a few years or a guy who go right in as a starter, the Colts defiantly need another tackle. The options behind Castonzo and Justice are not good enough. The only player in the organization who could potentially solve this problem is Ijalana, but he is a question mark because of his injuries and he might be better suited as a guard.

    Cornerback

To me Davis looks like a good #1 and I think Butler and/or Powers can handle the #3, but there is a need for a new #2.

3-4 Outside Linebacker (to replace Freeney)

I feel the outside line backing core is thin with Freeney probably leaving (witch I think would be best for both parties because of the system). To me Hughes would probably do ok as a starter, but with the need for a new OLB anyway I think the position could be upgraded. Since Mathis isn’t young either it would be a good move for the future also.

    Safety (SS)

There is defiantly a need for a new strong safety. In my opinion Zibikowski is a good rotational/backup player and Lefeged is backup and special teamer, but neither of them are a starter. With a deep safety draft I feel that would be the best way to go.

    Defensive End

DE is a position where the Colts could manage with what is on the roster, but it is a thin position and with Moalas injury it is even thinner. So I think the Colts should get a new not to old guy to strengthen the position, and maybe be an upgrade over Moala and/or a future replacement for Redding.

There is also some talk of needs at WR and NT, but I feel the Colts should give the young WRs a chance to see what they got and rather draft Reggie’s replacement in one of the next couple of drafts. I also have high hopes for Chapman and with McKinney (who I don’t think is going to be more than a rotational/backup player) also coming back I think the team should give them a chance first.

Of course there might be a guy that is not a big need that falls to the Colts in the draft that would be too good to not take or the organization could have fixed most of the holes in free agency and have the opportunity to use one or two draft picks as luxury picks.

  13. I’m from just outside Oslo, Norway.

Only followed the NFL and the Colts for little over a year, but it has been a really good year!

Andrew Luck brought me to the horseshoe because he is born the exact same date and year as me.

Looking forward to this offseason and can’t wait for the new season to start!

  14. Does this count as a pro bowl for Luck even if he only got in as an alternate?

What I mean is when people talk about players a normal credential is how many pro bowls they have been selected to (Player X is a Y times pro bowler etc.).

  15. I think the guy that we should keep an eye on is Andrew Luck's long time center  Sam Schwartzstein. He is a little undersized at 290 pounds, but he was a good run blocker and good solid potential. Could be a good Day 3 pick (Rounds 4-7). Nobody is paying any attention to him, despite him playing pretty well overall.

If Schwartzstein is a little undersized do you think he has the frame to put on some weight, and will his game be affected if he is 10 pounds (or more) heavier?

    About Stanford players....

    Offensive in the Draft:

    -- Two tight ends...  Ertz/Toilolo

    -- One Center....      Schwartzstein

    -- Two Wide Receivers...    Terrell/Patterson

    -- One running back...      Taylor

Ertz and the Notre Dame kid are the top two tight ends.   Toilolo is 6'8" and 265, but still raw and unpolished.   He knows he needs another year but is coming out so as not to risk getting hurt his last year in college.   He already has one knee injury and one broken foot in two different years at Stanford.   Taylor, IMO, is a quality NFL back-up.  Not a starter.  Likely to be taken in the 4-6 rounds depending on how he tests.   The other kids are Free Agent types, even Schwartzstein and Terrell.

I remember I really liked Toilolo from the Stanford games I watched to see Luck. Where do you think he will go in the draft, and can he overcome his injury problems?

What is your take on Schwartzstein?

  16. I thought it would be a good idea to have a place where we could direct questions about, Pep Hamilton, the Stanford offense (scheme and other things) and Stanford players who could be targeted by the Colts, to people with better knowledge of these things.

One of my questions would be which Stanford players the Colts could go after in the draft and UDFA this year and what type of players they are?

  17. I live in Pennsylvania and grew up watching the Eagles (Fathers a Eagles fan) and let me tell you that I DO NOT want DRC. I think Philly keeps him and releases Nnami.. Who also once got paid turned into a flop.

I could deal with this scenario, but yeah... no DRC... I think we can get a quality guy at corner Chris Houston or Greg Toler, Brent Grimes, Keenan Lewis, Kyle Arrington, Chris Owens  ect.... anybody but DRC... already (these guys with the DRC :sigh: )

If not DRC does anybody have a suggestion on a corner with some size the Colts could go after?

I would really like a player who can take on some of today’s bigger receivers

  18. Here is my preliminary offseason wish list (with a little realism):

Letting Freeney, Avrey, Collie (potentially resign vet min), Olsen and Moore walk

Resigning: McAfee, Moala, Powers (if not too expensive), Justice, Butler and most of the other guys

    FA:

    • OG Louis Vasquez (Andy Levitre)
    • OT Andre Smith (Phil Loadholt)
    • CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (there are other options here but I would like someone with a little height)
    • OLB Paul Kruger (Connor Barwin)
    • DE Armond Armstead

    Draft:

With these FA’s already singed I would like the Colts to go BPA in the draft, with Defense as a focus. Getting more talent on that side of the ball and only going specifically after a few positions.

    • SS (several options here and there is also several good FA’s if there is enough cap left for it)
    • OG Barrett Jones, Jonathan Cooper, Larry Warford (Warmack is probably gone)

The only other players on the offensive side than OG or a must have player I would consider is a tall and big WR or a young C (if Barrett isn't drafted) to grow with Luck.

Is this a possible scenario, and what are your thoughts about it?

  19. Here is a website with all active NFL player contracts and what they make.

This should help you gauge what a player might ask in free agency by comparing that free agent to comparable players that are under contract...keeping in mind of course that supply and demand come into the equation....

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/

It’s a great site, but the problem for me is that I don’t know which players I should compare the different players to. I don’t have enough knowledge of the reputation and quality of the players on the other teams than the Colts. And most of the younger FAs are still on their rookie contracts, so I can’t use their current contract as a guideline either.

  20. I’m from Norway and have only followed the Colts and the NFL for about a year, so I’m not that familiar with all the players on other teams, what kind of contracts that are normal and what size of contract different players would demand.

To me it looks like a great player would demand a contract of around 10 mill a year (of course a little more for players like Peyton), a good but not great player would demand around 4-6 mill a year and a decent player would demand 1-2 mill a year.

Are these numbers at least in the ballpark or am I way off?

I would like the Colts to go after guys in the middle category (no matter if my numbers are off), not the big money guys, but still good players.

I would also like to know what you guys think some of the more talked about FA’s would want per year:

    DRC

    Louis Vasquez

    Andre Smith

    Paul Kruger

    William Moore

    Connor Barwin

    Andy Levitre

    Jairus Byrd

    Phil Loadholt

    Anthony Spencer

    Mike Jenkins

    Dashon Goldson

    Jake Long

    Will Beatty

I know these numbers aren’t written in stone but I would just like an estimate when trying to figure out who I would like the Colts to really go after.

    Thanks for any help!
