So you think this team is ready to make a run at the Super Bowl? Yeah, I definitely don't agree with that.

So what will it take and how long?  Buckner is on the last year of his deal.  What do you do with him next year?  If they add missing pieces in key areas, the division title is a very realistic goal.  Once you get in and get a home game, a lot can happen.  Look at the Lions.  They missed the playoffs by one game just like we did and they were some bad coaching decisions away from being in the Super Bowl.  It doesn't take 5 years to build a team anymore.  Take advantage of AR's rookie deal and go for it.  Now please know I'm not saying they WILL be that successful, but the mindset should not be to keep looking years down the road.  Bring in some difference makers to get a different outcome 😊

  2. Go out and get Khalil Mack.  Word is chargers are looking to move him.  He would immediately be the best pass rusher on the team.  Fill secondary with some veteran free agents.  Draft Thomas from LSU, a CB and safety Calen Bullock from USC with the 1st 3 picks. I'd also look to see what we could get for Kwity.  I'd move him for a 2, maybe even a 3.  Too inconsistent.  Extend Buckner and cut MAC to create more cap space.

I just looked at over the cap.

They had the Colts with less than $12m.

Can you please double check?   I will as well.

EDIT:    I just double checked.   I see the Colts with $11.578m.    And I don’t see a single team with $28.7 avail.   So I’m not sure what you’re looking at.

Have you done the math and thus is your calculation?   Perhaps you’re right?   I just don’t know how you got there.

I don’t think they have the Ryan cut factored in yet

you can come up with a long term qb at 4 so no lol

Agreed.  Next years 1st could be way too valuable. We can suck next year and have a top 3 pick that we could hold for ransom with the QBs slated to come out next year.  Or be in a position to take Marvin Jr.  if it’s a future 1st I’d make it 2025 or only 2024 if the pick is top 10 protected

  5. I’m totally against trading next years 1st rounder but if they have to, maybe they can put some protection on it like NBA trades are structured.  So if the pick is in the top 5 than the trade piece moves to 2025 and then it’s top 10 protected.  So forth and so on.  Too much talent in the 24 draft and we could struggle (hopefully not) next year.

  6. Ran this by a couple Bear fan friends of mine and they were on board.

Bears swap with Texans and pick up pick 12.  Bears trade 2 to Colts for 4, 35, next years 2 and Buckner.  So Bears end up with 4, 12, 35, Buckner and next years Colts 2.  Bears grab Anderson at 4 and a WR/OT at 12 plus Buckner.  Texans get their QB, we get our QB and keep next years 1st

Seems it won’t be live streamed like they usually are. Are they going to edit and sanitize it?

Wow where did you see that it won’t be live streamed?  Ballard has been a coward this entire season.  He used to speak multiple times per year and the year where it all goes to hell he’s nowhere to be found.

I feel the same way.  One thing I have noticed is the older fans show more patience as they have been through the real rough days. What we have been through the last 5 years don't touch what was going on pryor to Harbaugh then Manning.

    Couldn’t have said it better!

  9. Grew up in Hammond (Bears country) but have loved the Colts since the Baltimore days.  Received every Colts item from the Sears Christmas catalog every year.  Bert Jones was my idol growing up.  When they moved to Indy I was ecstatic that my team was only 2.5 hours away from me.  Got season tickets in 1988 and have had them ever since.  Got picked to represent the Colts at the 2018 draft in Dallas.  I bleed blue until I die.

Like in previous years my first mock is a bit more aggressive than my final one would be. This is more along the lines of what I would do, rather than what I expect Ballard to do, but I still try to take into account Ballard's statements about what he wants in his roster, what schemes he prefers, what players he thinks are important for his team, etc.

I'm using Overthecap's Colts page for salary numbers. I'm using this article for Colts' own free agents.

I will be using spotrac's free agency tracker to find other teams' free agents and if there is market value figure listed, I will try to be close to it, unless I deem it unreasonable for one reason or another.

For the draft I will be using The Draft Network's mock draft machine. I will run it with their predictive board, but I will try to take players based on how I feel about the players without trying to cheat the system(for example if a player I have ranked no. 8 is there on the board at 13 and is BPA, but is ranked 44 on their board I will NOT pass on him because I know I can draft him in later rounds, I would consider this cheating the system because I have information that in the real world GMs don't really have).

    Starting Team Cap Space: $91,846,470

    Own Free Agents:

    Unrestricted FAs

Josh Andrews OC 1 year 2M, reliable backup, secure him as our backup C for next year

Anthony Castonzo OT 3 year 50M ... So... hear me out. I usually wouldn't want to give this long of a term deal to a player that is already talking about retiring but... I would structure this one with lower starting salary and non-guaranteed increasing money going forward. Meaning - you get the money if you want to play and you get more in the future than now. Nothing given in advance except for the 1st year - 15.5M guaranteed (year 2 - 17M, becomes guaranteed after game 1 2021, year 3 - 17.5M becomes guaranteed after game 1 of 2022) (cap hit for 2020 15.5M)

Devin Funchess, WR 1 year 5M... Ballard left me with the impression that they are actually happy with the way Funchess handled himself in his recovery behind the scenes. Give him one more year to prove himself.

Joe Haeg OT/OG 2 years 7M (4.5M guaranteed, 3.5M cap hit for 2020) He's our most universal OLineman and has done good job filling holes throughout the whole line. Deserves to be paid

Jabaal Sheard DE - 2 years 12M (7M guaranteed, 6M caphit), solid lineman. Ballard stated he regretted not retaining some more vets to help the young guys. IMO it's possible Sheard becomes one of his learned lessons and he gives him a solid contract to stay and mentor the youth

Jonathan Williams, RB 1 year 1M

    Le'Raven Clark OT

    Eric Ebron, TE

    Clayton Geathers S

    Adam Vinatieri K

    Dontrelle Inman WR

    Chester Rodgers WR

    Restricted FAs

Briean Boddy-Calhoun, CB Original Round Tender(2,144,000)

Marcus Johnson, WR Second Round Tender (3,278,000)

    Trevon Coley DT

    Exclusive Rights FAs

    Daurice Fountain, WR $525,000

    Rolan Milligan, S/CB $495,000

    Cuts:

    Bryan Hoyer (3M cap savings)

    Margus Hunt(4M cap savings)

---Total Spent on Own FAs: 30.298M ||| Remaining Cap Space: $61,548,470

    Other Teams' FAs:

Daryl Williams, OT - 2 year 8M(5M guaranteed, 4M guaranteed/caphit first year) - This is a tough one. Williams used to be viewed as a player on the rise but then suffered a torn MCL and broken kneecap in 2018 and missed the whole season and then had a bad year in his return in 2019. The OT options this year are not great and I wanted to get a player with some upside(he's still 28). Is he shot after the injury? Or can being one more year away from his injury see him return to his previous form? This is the bet I'm making. I want to beef up the line with players that can play in case of injuries/retirement

Javon Hargrave, DT 4 years 62M(38M guaranteed, 16M guaranteed 1st year) - this is our big time FA signing. One of the best interior pass-rushers in the league and he's young(27). He played in an uneven front and still managed to record the highest pressure rate from all interior players in the NFL last year. This is something we desperately need and something I feel like Ballard might actually splurge on. He's an explosive athlete who beats opponents with quickness and leverage thanks to low center of gravity. Ballard emphasized again in the exit interview/press-conference that the 3T is extremely important for our scheme... well... lets see what we can do with a player who IMO might be even more successful in our system than in the one he was playing thus far in PIT.

Shaq Lawson, DE 4 years 34M(20M guaranteed, 9M guaranteed year 1) a pass-rusher on the rise, just had his best season. IMO he fits the profile of a left DE that Ballard likes(stout, good against the run, technically sound with some explosive traits, but not blazing fast... a player you can move inside on passing downs) - this is the Basham, Lewis, Sheard mold. It doesn't look like Ballard succeeded with the ones he drafted so here it goes. He gets himself a player that has shown he can actually play in the league and as an ex-first rounder he has the pedigree and athleticism to take another step forward in his development.

Sean Davis, FS 1 year 2M - reclamation project/depth at safety. A safety with great athleticism and ability to hit, but very inconsistent

Hunter Henry, TE, 4 years 34M (20M guaranteed, 9M guaranteed year 1) - Frank loves himself multiple TE sets. This class of free agent TE is not bad. Ultimately I narrowed it down to Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper. I think we need a pass-catching weapon from the TE position and both of those fulfill that role. IMO both are better overall players than Ebron who we lost and will allow Frank to run some of his favorite sets with the new QB we draft(a little foreshadowing for the draft from me here :woah: )

Pharoh Cooper, WR, 1 year 2.5M - depth at receiver

---Total Spent on Other Teams' FAs: $42.5M ||| Remaining Cap Space: $18,958,470

    And here comes the draft...

    Draft

Round 1. Pick 13 Jordan Love, QB, Utah State - my love for Love is not a secret around here, so I'm not sure I have to write much of a justification for this pick. IMO Love has the highest upside of all the QBs in this year's draft. He has high level QB traits and attributes. He already has some of the things I most value in a QB - pocket presence(one of the best in the class) and ability to make plays out of structure and on the move. He has one of the strongest arms in the draft and he has pretty much all the throws in his arsenal - he can throw bullets, he can throw with touch over defenders, he can throw the deep out, he can throw the seam, he can sidearm it to create different angle, he can throw with anticipation and timing. With that said, I expect him to need a year because his decision making needs to improve and makes some very weird mistakes with his reads + he needs to learn to run a pro offense without constantly looking to the sideline for instructions. This is as much a bet on him as a prospect as it is on Frank Reich and the rest of the coaching staff to develop him. So here we go... Indy, meet your franchise QB of the future - Jordan Love.

Round 2. Pick 34 Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame This is my TE1 in the draft and I really really like Kmet. He looks very impressive with at 6'6" 255 frame with his effortless movement and pass-catching ability. He has a chance to be high end TE in the Kelce/Kittle mold. He seems to have great hands and is versatile enough to be an asset even in the run game.

Round 2. Pick 44 Jalen Reagor, WR, TCU - impressive athlete who combines his explosiveness with crafty route running. He's a threat both as a YAC receiver on short and intermediate passes and as a deep threat. Not very physical, but he has game breaker ability. I couldn't pass on him here. Whoever starts for us at QB will have some expansive weaponry.

Round 3, pick 73 Jordan Elliot, DT, Missouri - here's an explosive gap penetrating athlete who I expect to start jumping up draft boards and mock drafts soon. Get him in our rotation and develop him next to or behind Hargrave depending on how ready he is year 1.

Round 4, pick 112 Trey Adams, OT, Washington - Here's one more shot at a potential future LT for the Colts. Our OLine coach Chris Strausser gets reunited with Adams after he coached him in Washington the previous several years. Trey Adams used to be thought of as a potential 1st round tackle but then series of injuries hampered his college career. We take a shot at trying to keep him healthy and develop him as the successor to AC

Round 5, pick 142 Thomas Graham Jr, CB, Oregon - a CB with the exact make up that Ballard likes for his corners - very physical and willing tackler, very competitive. Good in zone coverage.

Round 6, pick 173 Antonio Gibson, WR/RB/KR - he's an electric athlete both with speed and with shiftiness. He's taken snaps at both RB and WR this year and he is very fun to watch with ball in his hands(his averages are... 19 yards per reception and 11 yards per carry, yep... this is not an error - 19 and 11!!!!). He won't be one or the other for us, he'd be a universal weapon you can unleash both from the backfield and as a deep threat and in various gimmick plays...

Round 6, pick 190 AJ Dillon, RB, Boston College - our attempt at a powerful fast RB a la Derrick Henry. Well, maybe the discount version. He doesn't play as strong and as powerful as Henry, but he will still add a bit of a different dimension to our running game with his size.

Round 7, pick 204 Gage Cervenka, OG/OC Clemson - developmental guard/depth at the interior of our line, possible future replacement for Glowinski

    Final thoughts:

    - It looks like the secondary can use some more work, but I will leave it as is for now. It's just the first version, and I expect it to not be amazing.

    - I'm wondering if I'm not overkilling the TE position, but... I kind of feel like we need weapons and at some point we will have to start phasing out Doyle and feel like Kmet can be a great successor for him. Here's a question - if you had to choose either Henry or Kmet? Who would you choose? And what would you do with the respective asset(the money or the pick) you decide to spare?

    - I'm loving the look of that DLine. We are 2 deep at all positions. Ideally Grover will play few snaps(just run snaps) and we will have all 4 linemen able to disrupt the passer. This would be a great line to rotate and keep fresh.

    - With all that speed and playmaking from the pass-catchers.... I kind of cannot wait to put Love in there. :woah:

Any thoughts and critique are welcome. Cheers everybody

(Disclaimer: I used the blueprint from my last year's mock so it's possible there are some mistakes/leftovers from it. Please don't hesitate to point out any glaring errors or things you think are overly unrealistic.)

Great thoughtful post.  Appreciate the time you spent putting this together.  Only question I have is drafting a TE at 34 if we sign Henry.

Parris Campbell.    Hurt most of this season.    Drafted bottom if the second round this year.    I think pick 59.

I’d expect more “skill players” this draft.

Ah crap yep.  My fault.  Forgot about Parris.  Carry on fellow Colts fans lol

The D is horrendous.  We need 2 starting DT's.  Is the secondary going to improve or so we need to draft a corner? Are we going to need a new LT? We could also use a DE.  This D was bad the last half of the season.  I thought if anything the D would get better as the year progressed as they were young.   They didn't. It was almost epic bad they were.

The defense has holes no doubt but we’ve got Turay coming back who was outstanding before he got hurt.  Rock really should be better, maybe Ballard spends big on a young D-line player (he’s on record saying it’s a position that needs an upgrade) and remember that a good offense that moves the ball more consistently will help the defense by keeping them off the field.  This tends to get overlooked.  Got to get that QB situation fixed and that will indirectly improve the D.

  13. Yeah not sure either but he’s 31 so he’s got several years left in a window of opportunity for us to win.  If Ballard loves a guy in the draft than that works too.   Obviously it all comes down to what Ballard and his team considers a good fit.  As long as the position is addressed this offseason I’m good.  It’s January 8th and a long way away from roster moves happening.  I need something to talk about lol.

  14. No intel here but on the chance the Lions are looking QB at 4. Thoughts on trading for Stafford assuming he’s fully healthy?  He’s only 31 and this would allow the Colts to draft other positions of need (DT/WR) with their earlier picks.  I don’t think he’s cost us pick 13.   Sucks we’re in this position.  QB purgatory is not fun at all folks.
