  1. This is another winnable game.  Trubitsky is a maroon.  Take away his run game and he's going to need an adult diaper standing in that pocket.

Steelers defense when it's at its best is very nasty.  But whatever we get today just play field position and be patient.  The advantage the Colts have on defense vs Trubitsky should be enough to have the field position edge and points should follow.

Here, the Pats did two things that Bradley doesn't like: 1) pre-snap disguise, and 2) blitz.

Disguising things pre-snap is particularly effective vs QBs who are very dependent on play action, as they turn their back often to the defense and when they look again it is completely different.  This then requires processing time, which for a guy like Trubitsky is like he's using an abacus.

  3. Colts are 21st in pressure percentage per snap in the league at 20.8%.  Not a great place to be.  But when you look at blitz percentage per snap (called blitzes) they are bottom of the barrel, 31st, at 16.1%.

What is interesting with all this is when you consider the actual deviation you get in league defenses, from the best to the worst.

The best defense in pressure percentage per snap is the Chiefs at 28.9%.  The worst defense is at 17.5% (3 teams tied).  That is a deviation of 11.4% in total.

Now with the blitz calls something funny happens, which is you get much more deviation from the most aggressive to the least aggressive defenses.  And for the record this relates very heavily back to personnel.  But still...  The defense with the highest blitz percentage per snap is the Vikings at 47.4%.  The defense with the least is the Colts 16.1%.  This means if you are the QB and you face the Colts you are seeing one third fewer blitzes than you would see vs the most aggressive defenses.

The most obvious conclusion you can draw from this is that the Colts don't trust their players in coverage, and their coordinator is not comfortable bringing the heat.

  4. Never have liked Bradley and didn't like the hire.  Guy has never distinguished himself so it is no surprise to see what his end product is in Indy.  And I have to agree that running 57% Cover 3 in today's league is crazy.

There is something to be said for zigging when everyone else is zagging.  But in Bradley's case it is simply his comfort zone.

Anyway.  Looking ahead the Colts need to be ready to pounce on one of the DCs who get fired from their head coaching positions:

Brandon Staley will be fired by the Chargers, he is a college coach of the Fangio tree who put up a top defense in LA before the Chargers hired him as HC.

Sean McDermott if the Bills let him go would be excellent as well, and may not get another HC gig if he's let go.  He is very plugged in on league trends and when he bounces back to a DC role some team is going to benefit.

Todd Bowles will likely be fired in Tampa, and is another guy who was in over his head as a HC but who has shown an ability to coordinate top defenses in big games.

Mike Vrabel might not be recycled back to the DC ranks when he gets fired, much like McDermott, but if he does end up as a DC he will be a very strong hire.

There are others who I think are lesser coordinators but who are still improvements over Bradley.  Like Dennis Allen for example, who I waffle on a bit but will admit might be underrated.  And coaches let go on the staffs of the coaches who are fired as well of course.  But the Colts need to prioritize nailing one of these guys and upgrading their staff.  Doing that and pairing one of them with an offensive mind they have in the HC role would be a winning combo for sure.

Here’s the thing I’m most worried about, Ballard. While the Titans drafted A J Brown, we felt what we had was good enough then. I’m hoping he realizes he needs to get more help for AR because I see the Jaguars getting Kirk, Ridley, Engram etc., Texans drafting Tank Dell and pretty soon more help for Stroud, and similar things I expect from Titans beyond Hopkins. Ballard has been the consistent stubborn one that I hope changes because he has to, that’s when AR can be very good, and doesn’t think what we have is enough.

But let’s not overreact to 1 or 2 games of a rookie QB though. Stroud has put up more on the table than any other rookie QB so far. The second half of AR against the Rams was stellar, the way Levis’ fourth quarter versus Dolphins was. Thanks to Bradley, Rams won in OT, while Titans punched the Dolphins in the mouth and won. So the W can distract. :)

I'm not overreacting.  Already said prior in this thread I believe that it's gonna take a few years to have an idea of what's what with this class.  But I know quality when I see it.  In that game last night Tua was out there benefitting from talent and top scheme.  Levis meanwhile was overcoming false starts, holding, dropped passes, etc and still got it done.  He could get injured (Levis is a big time injury risk I think in how he runs to contact) but overall that's a QB who is angry when his drives stall.  Angry.

That collision with him and Ramsey gives me hope.  Not that I ever wish for anyone to be injured.  But that over time Levis will be his own worst enemy in terms of being available.

Back to AR the goal in this draft has to be to double down on him by loading explosive threats in this offense.  Not stacking the offense with big targets who can win contested catches.  Explosive play ability.  Field stretchers.  Plural.  I'd draft one WR in the first round, options of which are plentiful, and another mid rounds who has some real juice as a depth field stretcher.  Let 11 leave in FA and spend that money on the defense at a spot of need instead.

I don’t have to root for him to fail, Levis that is. He suffered the same thing Jordan Love suffered, a good junior year followed by key staff and players leaving in the senior year. So Love dropped to No.26 and Levis fell to the 2nd round in an overreaction, IMO.

AR was drafted with a low floor high ceiling expectations for 3 plus years like Lamar Jackson but with less starting experience. Both Stroud and Levis had higher floors, IMO but all their ceilings can’t be measured till their first 3 years in the league are over, IMO.

I am well aware of how it went down chad.  Said over and over that Stroud & Levis were the top two.  But all I am feeling right now is extreme irritation.  This is going to be the gift that keeps on giving to watch those two with division rivals.

So AR absolutely HAS TO be great for us.  He has to.
