Listening to Mike Renner who was a guest on the PFF podcast, he reckons corner is looking like possibly the strongest position group next year. Which is good news for the Colts.

I think you will see a good year from our current CBs

I would LOVE to have no major holes going into next years draft (It MIGHT happen)

If we end up drafting top 5, we SHOULD have a new GM

However.......I see us drafting in the 20s

And take BPA, or trade back

  2. On opinion from the peanut gallery

Sam E is going into year 3

If he was practicing well and had command of this offense I don’t think we are spending the cash on a vet to back up AR

Im not sure that he will ever be someone to turn the team over to

IMHO I hope the 2 QBs that we brought in as udfas get a true competition against Sam E

    Exactly this.

Look at this. Lawrence had a full 8 seconds to throw the ball. Better corners are not going to change the outcome of a play like that.

    THIS man "gets it"

    Bravo

If you have little pressure, even with ALL PRO / HOF CBs would be a fail

A great FS, can help on these plays that happen, but PRESSURE is HOW this defense is successful (or not)

If the pass rush continues to develop though, they don't need great corners,

I agree 1000% with this line of your statement

They need "GOOD" corners, but not great to be succesful in this defense

Personally I think even with Flowers and Brents we still have one of the worst CB groups in the league.

    They are both just guys

I dont 100% disagree, and respectfully,

There IS an economy in running a zone defense that the Colts run

Some teams go with man-to-man corners on an island

This allows you to blitz more often, keeping the QB guessing.

Its a BEAUTIFUL thing when you have the right TWO man-to-man CBs. They are harder to find, and are MUCH more expensive than a decent zone CB

THIS defense uses front 4 pressure  (supposedly :) ) to shorten the time for the QB to find an open receiver

We use our money and priority draft picks on DL to support this defense.

THIS is the defense that we play

You can get by with a CB (less expensive) that can zone cover, and can tackle, that wouldn't survive in a man-to-man scheme

A 4.5 40 is fast enough for this scheme, but they DO have to tackle

IMHO, in this defense, you need pressure from the DL and a solid FS, to "erase" the coverage mistakes from CBs

I do have some concerns with our LBs in coverage as we didnt seem to keep up with crossers, RB releases, and TEs

We will see how it plays out, but I truly hope that we take a swing at a FA FS

To the others that quoted me about being able to afford Budda, I agree and am with you.  It makes sense.  I just can’t see Ballard dishing that out, even if he’s worth it.  I hope I’m wrong.

As far as football smarts, Cross looked lost out there at times.  I’m not saying he’s isn’t a bright person, just that I haven’t seen him make the best decisions.   I was really hoping he’d grow into that spot, and he still may.  Reps are important and he should be getting them if they don’t pick someone up.

I think it will be obvious in practice, if he knows where he should be and can keep up with the speedy WRs.  The question is, will they acknowledge that or keep hoping he develops (ala Pryor and Pinter a couple years ago).

An experienced and talented FS is the missing piece to our defense

IMHO that is the single most important piece that we need to fill before the season starts

That person is NOT on our current roster

At this stage this is the top priority

You can play less experienced CBs with a star FS

Bortolini was very good at the Senior Bowl. Technically sound and quick. I would not be surprised at all if either him or Concalves starts right guard this year, and I like Fries, I'm one of the few on here who doesn't think he sucks. We may be so good running the ball this year Richardson won't have to throw much(20-25 times a game?) This offense is going to be fun to watch and we should win a lot of games as long as we aren't playing cb's 10 yards off the line and dropping linebackers 12 yards deep on 3rd and 3. Go Colts!

    Agreed

By mid year, this offense might be special,

I wonder if our defense can at least get to 15, in points allowed

Having an offense that grinds it our, will help the defense stay fresh

I disagree for several reasons. 1.) We have Cross, Thomas, and Simpson at FS. All are young. I want to see a battle between the 3 to see who can start and if any are any good. 2.) We have Blackmon at SS, we don't need two veterans. 3.) We need a veteran at CB that can not only improve our CB play, but that the young CB group can learn from. 4.) I feel Baker can be cut easily if we sign a veteran CB and I'm not sure if Flowers will be 100% right away.

There's just so many more reasons to go after a CB than a FS IMO.

No worries, I am just an old dude clacking away on a PC

I am wrong more times than I am right  (Ask my wife, she keeps a running list  :) )

IMHO, because they clearly love their young CB room,  an experienced FS can "erase" some of the young'uns mistakes in their zone.  You can get away with rookie and young CB mistakes (that will come) by having that experienced guy

    behind them

Or.......  I could be completely wrong   :)

  9. I give it an A+

The draft shouldn't be measured in April, but on the surface, it appears we did great, and filled two glaring holes at DE and WR

BOTH players need to be accounted for by our competition

AD Mitchell can (and will) blow by single coverage

You will HAVE to put him in a zone cover, to account for the speed

THIS step will ensure that the defense cannot do the 8 man box crapollla that we saw most of the time.  JT will have so much more room to run

The other recievers will be open more than they were last year

We finally have a DE (again) that the Offense needs to account for

Someone that can get 4-5 more sacks (than Paye)

    and actually DOUBLE his hurries.

    I am excited.....

I REALLY think that we need to add that vet FS, to complete this offseason

Maybe? I think he just read the board well, and he probably liked 2 WRs there. Corley was the next WR taken after Mitchell and not till the first pick of the 3rd round.(12 picks from Mitchell's spot, 18 picks from #46)

Another receiver wasn't drafted in the 2nd after Mitchell

He read the board right, BUT.......

If another team would have traded into those spots, we would have missed on a player that I think COULD be a Moss type reciever

    A+

Laiatu Latu - The kinda guy I've been clamouring for for a long time now and specifically the guy I hoped we'd get this draft. I'm SUPER excited about this pick. If Latu turns into our Hendrickson/Crossby/Bosa the rest of the players in this draft can bust and it would still be A+ in my opinion. Technician without equal and still athletic. There's just so much to love about this guy. Steal #1.

Adonai Mitchell - Steal #2. Ballard stood tall on the hill defending this guy and reportedly Steichen and Wayne have been pounding the table for this guy for some time... and they got him AFTER a trade back? Bruh! Steal! Super athletic and has beat up on some of the top CBs in this draft.

Matt Goncalves - We've needed to upgrade our OL depth and Goncalves can play all over the line. Solid pick!

Tanor Bortolini - Quite possibly our future OC. Super athletic - broke Jason Kelce's 3-cone record at the combine. Love this pick!

Anthony Gould - This could potentially turn out to be a genius move by Ballard & Co. The new return rules means having a good returner is extra important and Gould is likely one of the best in the draft! We also needed a good backup behind Downs since McKenzie left.

Jaylon Carlies - After last season I felt like we needed to upgrade our coverage ability at the LB position. This is a move to do just that. Love it!

Jaylin Simpson - We needed to at least add competition at the FS spot. With us picking Simpson and last years 5th rounder Daniel Scott returning (who Ballard seems really excited about), we seem to be set with young talent there. Maybe we add a vet? Like this pick.

Micah Abraham - Don't know much about him, but he has the pedigree. Doesn't fit Ballard's typical athletic profile, so they must have seen something on tape they REALLY like.

Jonah Laulu - The Colts brought him in for a top 30 visit and he fits their athletic profile. Project. Solid pick in the 7th.

    RAH brotha RAH !!!

We both kept the faith :)

Yeah, we did a great job. Just need to sign a veteran CB for a year and we're good IMO.

If we have money for a FA, IMHO it should be FS, then CB

The back end is so so important in THIS zone that the Colts play 99% of the time with big (but a touch slower) CBs spec

The FS cleans it all up

Thats why I think we should use any remaining cap money to bring in a decent FS

We could use a stud CB, we have limited cash

Something else to lock away in the brain.

Ballard got 4 players, while trading down and still getting Mitchell.

    2.46 - **traded for #52, #142, #155

    **2.52 - $1,219,297 - Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas

    **5.142 - $883,167 - Anthony Gould, WR, Oregon State

    **5.155 - ****traded for #164, #201

    ****5.164 - $869,254 - Jaylin Simpson, S, Auburn

    ****6.201 -$838,489 - Micah Abraham, CB, Marshall

That trade down, then subsequent trade down again, allowed us to get who we were more than likely going to grab anyway(Mitchell). While also being able to throw 3 more darts, including a second WR, and 2 other guys that I think have a good chance of earning one of this last spots at CB, Safety.

The trade back in round 2 was a bit risky IMHO

    It paid off but, yikes

Much better than French and Pinter IMO.

    He might be

I just watched some senior bowl plays.  He was dominant in the week and in the game

He looked awesome in season highlights as well except one play that J Newton got by him

    this is a great pick

In run blocking he would be similar to Fries in that with a little angle he can do a good job getting push. Fries is over matched trying to drive block because he isn't a bender. This guy isn't a bender but carries maybe 15 more lbs.

Gonc has been very successful as a pass blocker. If he can get some push in short yardage of which we desperately could use improvement at RG, and he proves an upgrade in pass pro over Fries, then yippee. To get that improvement this year in the 3rd round would be a real plus.

According to him his big toe injury was serious. Said he was 85-90% at his pro day and had only started training 3 weeks before. The 19 reps seemed to be a personal best. Yikes!

He had 21 college starts in 39 games. He was crossed trained and played LT, RT, LG, RG. This was from our new oline coach.

A big plus, and he apparently is very quick off the snap.

He is big but not so quick, so I believe he would get humbled playing tackle. I doubt worse than Freeland was last season so...

I'm impressed with his demeanor, and he is consider tough.

I give this pick a B.  Pray for the toe!! :goodluck: :applause: :colts:

    Agreed

Freeland will come back 10-15 lbs stronger (I believe)

I view him as our next man up at Tackle

This kid will grow as well, possibly taking the RG spot in the future

    Great pick up
