I have to watch Adonai Mitchell...

    Zierlein's write up on Mitchell:

    Overview
Ascending prospect with size, speed and ball skills to become a very good NFL receiver, but he’s still in the process of bridging those traits. Mitchell can beat press and has the speed to take the battle to the third level but he’s still learning the art of bullying the catch space in tight quarters and jump-ball battles. He’s not always a natural hands-catcher, but his ability to snare balls outside his frame is top-notch. His route running currently lacks focus and consistency, but agility and burst out of breaks will not be an issue. Mitchell is rugged after the catch and has the ability to become a winner on all three levels. The difference between becoming a WR2 or WR1 could rest on his urgency and willingness to go to work on the unpolished areas of his craft.

    Strengths
Flashes foot quickness needed to beat NFL press.
Speed shifter inside the route with sudden change of direction.
Stands ground and keeps landing area to boundary open on deep sideline throws.
Ridiculous catch web, bringing in off-frame throws from all directions.
Already using the NFL two-foot drop near boundaries.
Patient long-ball tracker and noted jump-ball winner.
Able to break tackles and fall forward for positive YAC.

    Weaknesses
Intensity can fluctuate from game to game.
Allows smaller players into his space to contest catches.
Cradle-catcher who fights football when catching with hands.
Needs to keep routes on time with better efficiency and finish.
Doesn’t play with aggression or sustain when asked to run block.

Mark my words players are going to refuse to do physical testing.  It's coming.  These guys are making a lot of money coming out of college.  They will tell the teams I'm not risking injury doing your dumb tests.  Look at my tape.  That should be good enough.

I agree.  They'll do it more and more.

UNTIL -- a top prospect drops out of the the first round simply because they refused to do any of the testing, any of the measurables.  They'll stop when it finally affects someone's income.  Until then, it'll only get worse.

  3. Well, folks.  I'm home.  The parking cluster @#$% downtown was unbearable.  I was having issues bringing up my QR code on my One Pass app.  Crowds of milling people.  And finally I was like, I can watch this from the comfort of my own couch.  Never mind.

Plus, also knowing that none of the top QB's nor top WR's were going to be part of it kinda poured ice water on my enthusiasm.

    Will just watch on TV.

For what it’s worth, Bob Irsay saved the colts in the long run.

    True.

I guess my point was that Bob Irsay was a jerk.  And if character purity is the entrance fee for admittance to the ring of honor (as it seems to be for Luck), then Bob Irsay, Eric Dickerson, even Jim Harbaugh all fall afoul of that measuring stick.

I think I’m at something like:

    1. Byron Murphy or Jared Verse/Chop Robinson

    2. Roman Wilson

    3. Marshawn Kneeland/Mo Kamara or Mehki Wingo

    Maybe:

    1. Chop Robinson

    2. Braden Fiske

    3. Ricky Pearsall

    Here are a few ideas:

    1. Laiatu Latu, DE, UCLA

    2. Roman Wilson, WR, Michigan

    3. Cole Bishop, S, Utah

    1. Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo

    2. Braden Fiske, DT, Florida St

    3. Zak Zinter, IOL, Michigan

    1. Brian Thomas, WR, LSU

    2. Tyler Nubin, S, Minnesota

    3. Marshawn Kneeland, DE, Western Michigan

    1. Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia

    2. T'Vondre Sweat, DT, Texas

    3. Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame

First Marv 2.0 skips all his scheduled interviews yesterday, now Caleb Williams, through his dad who is his agent, is doing some crazy stuff:

so far, Williams is demanding, not asking, for the following:

    1. NOT to have to sign the standard rookie contract (not allowed under the CBA and Draft rules)

    2. A percentage of ownership stakes for whatever team drafts him(not allowed under league rules and the CBA)

    3. A fully guaranteed contract (not allowed under the CBA for rookies)

and then he skips his medical examine AND refuses to turn over any medical records, something also against the CBA AND the first time ever a combine invitee has done such actions.

I don’t know if all this works itself out and he still goes 1 overall but I’m seeing some very serious character and ego issues. I said last October I thought the kid was egotistical and would shut out. That was just based on some comments he was making, but man his actions now fully support the egotistical view.

The red flags are beginning to pile up on Caleb Williams.  If I were a GM, I'd go looking elsewhere for my QB.  If he's gonna behave like this right now, just wait for what he'll be like when he's on your team.

  7. I missed the part with the Safeties yesterday.  Did anyone say why Tyler Nubin wasn't doing drills or anything?  My personal theory is that he, like Bryce Young last year, didn't want his shortcoming highlighted in comparison to the other players.  He may be the top pure Safety in the draft, but his speed is questionable.

I've had a bull's eye on him for a long time, but I'm beginning to question.

He did suck badly I’m afraid.  He ranked 80/84 for tackles.  That’s very bad.  Raiman ranked 7/84.  That’s very good.  So Freeland did suck badly unfortunately.  Yeah he was a rookie and he needs some strength and conditioning.  But he has a long way to go to get to average.  He shouldn’t be handed the swing tackle position.  Hopefully we bring in some competition or a veteran we can count on to do a better job.

I agree, his PFF score was poor.  However, I didn't grind my teeth to powder with every snap like I did when we had Eric Fisher, Matt Pryor, and Julien Davenport.  He wasn't supposed to start.  He was drafted to be a backup right tackle.  At yet, by mid-training camp, he had already vaulted to the primary swing for both tackle positions.  And when he was forced to start, he held his own.  Barely, to be sure!  But he wasn't a traffic cone like Pryor was.  I expect him to advance beyond his rookie performance level.  No, I'm not expecting him to be All World or anything.  Serviceable/Reliable is probably his ceiling.  But that's pretty good for a 4th round pick!

Need to take another look at Jaylx Hunt.  Really impressive performances today.

The Draft Network says that he's incredibly raw.  Started out as a Safety before moving to Edge rusher.  He's got some incredible measurables, but low experience at the position.  Sounds like a swift special teams player while he gets trained up.  Can he play at this level?  Gonna find out!

  10. Since Braden Fiske is in the spotlight, here is his quick analysis from NFL Draft Buzz:

    SCOUTING REPORT: STRENGTHS
Quick off the snap in the pass rush, Fiske has violent hands and a good feel for working inside counter moves.
Fiske has heavy hands and uses them aggressively, rocking offensive linemen back. He shows the ability to disengage and out-grapple blockers in a phone booth.
He has an excellent feel for working off blockers and knowing how and when to counter as the play goes on.
Combines strength and footwork to fill holes inside, as well. Recovers from cut blocks or falling on his way to make a tackle.
Flashes quick hands to slap away blocks, but too oft~n gets caught in the hand-fighting at the line rather than quickly disengaging.
A high-motor pass rusher with good quickness, Fiske has a compact but wide frame and long arms.

    SCOUTING REPORT: WEAKNESSES
Plays upright and struggles with leverage. Too often stonewalled at the line and doesn't show the hand strength or technique to shed or redirect blockers.
Misses tackles, even when Fiske gets his hands on the ballcarrier. Needs to improve hand placement and technique.
Fiske is a bit underpowered, often playing too high and struggling to hold the point of attack against double teams.

  11. I'm gonna be watching particularly the 2nd level WR's (Brian Thomas, Tony Franklin, Adonai Mitchell, Xavier Worthy), the DE's (Laiatu Latu, Jared Verse, Dallas Turner) and the top defensive backs (Terrion Arnold, Nate Wiggins, Kool-Aid McKinstry).  Particular focus on Safety Tyler Nubin and DB Cooper DeJean.  And, obviously, TE Brock Bowers.  Would like to see if T'Vondre Sweat will allow himself to be weighed at the combine.

Given the complexities of the modern defense vs multiple-receiver sets, linebackers are now more like "big safeties".  You either line up in the 4-2-5 "big" or the 4-1-6 "light", depending on whether or not the offense has a TE in the mix.

If it were me, I would draft big Free Safeties and have them play linebacker.  More of the open field traits you need, while still having bulk to play LB when appropriate.

By the way, @NewColtsFan, this Safety playing other positions isn't a new thing.  In 2003, Bill Polian drafted Cato June in the 6th round, who played Safety at Michigan, and turned him into the primary off-ball Linebacker for the Tampa-2 defense.   He did it again in 2005, drafting Marlin Jackson, who also played Safety at Michigan, and made him a Tampa-2 Corner.  In 2000, the Bears drafted Brian Urlacher, who played Safety at New Mexico, and made him into an eight-time pro bowl Linebacker.

Sometimes the Safety/Linebacker hybrid doesn't work out (see: Jabril Peppers), but when it does, it's golden.
