First of all, Brissett is by no means mediocre.  He's an above average quarterback.  This conversation will go a lot better if you delete the word "mediocre" from your vocabulary.

If you're arguing that Brissett is only good enough for the team to be mediocre, and wallow around between 7-9 and 9-7, that's something we can't know right now, and frankly would be more of an indictment of the GM than any of the players on the field.

Also, the idea that this is somehow the worst case scneario is something of a bad joke.  We've SEEN the worst case scenario play out on other franchises.  The worst case scenario is not 7-9.  It's Arizona.  Where you don't have that careful plan and go tanking 1 year hoping for a quick roster fix and then wind up scraping the bottom year after year because you can't put a team together.

This is the worst case scenario:

    lol, nice video.

Or we could be the Dolphins. They've got a plan.

It does some what fall on Ballard. The team was built around Luck. Sort of like how Polian built the old team around Manning. Not Ballard's fault the franchise QB decided to retire though.

Extremely defensive about someone stating their opinion. Brissett is by far mediocre in my eyes. Obviously not in yours. Stats are stats & can be bent to argue any opinion. My eyes tell me what I need to know.

You feel that with this team?

We would be 3-1 and on top of the division if Adam could kick the ball in game 1.

I agree with you once you are eliminated from playoff contention.

If this team could win 9 games, they could make the playoffs.  Depending how the season goes, they could make a run.   If the defense gets healthy and gels.   If Brisset shows some improvement.   If the WR's are healthy.   Who knows.   You don't give up at 2-2 though.

I understand what you're getting at, but that's a lot of ifs that could be said the opposite way also. I'm just not optimistic about this team. It was built around Luck & Jacoby isn't Andrew. It's not his fault, but it is what it is. Frank is doing great with what he has to work with. But at the beginning of the year Frank even stated Jacoby is a Top 20 QB. That's like saying he's equivalent to Andy Dalton. Good grief. But I loved Frank's honesty.

Why is it a fear. He will either be the next guy and improve or we will draft and move on. Ballard isn’t going to sit back in mediocrity or years. Nothing to be scared about. Just relax and see how the season goes. You put a great team around him there is no way to tell what his ceiling is until we let it play out.  You know why a lot QB end up mediocre because they have a bad organization and they don’t build the team right.  We won’t really know what we have until the end of the season and letting the WR mature a little..

If we go 8-8 or 9-7 & we're "in the mix" we might pass on a top flight QB in favor of mediocrity. Top tier QB classes only come every so often and next year it's supposed to be one of those. I don't want to be fooled by one good to decent season when we've already got one terrible season by Jacoby. I get a lot of y'all think 2017 was an aberration for him, but I'm not so sure.

Personally I'd rather tank, though I know how blasphemous that is around here.

I've got a saying I try to live by: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

The Worst Case Scenario is he's good enough for us to be mediocre.

This is my fear with Brissett.

I don't understand why anybody would want to be competitive when you know you can't win it all; aka mediocre. We see this year in and year out with the Titans & that's not a place the Colts belong.  Work the system and be terrible to get who you need to get.

I think they can find a better version of Austin Howard -- the experienced vet who won't cost a lot but can play at a reasonably high level. If Howard had made it out of camp looking like a starting caliber RT -- which is how he played last year -- our OL situation would be better than it is right now.

Or maybe Clark, Haeg or Webb locks that spot down this season. That has to be what Ballard is hoping for.

I'm personally hoping Haeg can hold down the fort on the right side. An O-line with Castonzo, Nelson, Kelly, Smith, & Haeg would hold up for some years. Definitely wouldn't be mad if it was Clark, Webb or Good though as long as it gets solved.

But if they can't get it done there's only one aging vet that sticks out to me next year: Bobbie Massie, RT of the Bears. He'll be 30 & shouldn't be more than 10 million with incentives. Just gotta hope the Bears let him walk, which probably won't happen.

I'd bet that more than half of those players don't reach free agency.

For me, the biggest need in free agency will be RT.

Yeah, I bet you'd be right on that. The cream of the crop hardly ever gets the chance to hit FA, but if they do Ballard should be more than ready to sign some younger players. Jacksonville, Dallas, & Minnesota are the main teams I'd expect to have to let some good players walk because of their cap situations.

RT is sadly such a scarcity unless Ballard is willing to sign an aging vet to a decent deal. The only young guys I saw were Jordan Mills, 28, Buffalo's RT (2019); Jawuan James, 27, Dolphins RT (2019); & La'el Collins, 27, Cowboys RT (2020) & they're likely to be signed or tagged back to their teams.

(The ages are how old they'll be in their FA years)

  7. Also, if you look into the potential FA in 2020 there's an abundance of talent at WR.

Here's a list of WRs on expiring contracts that year:

    Michael Thomas, 27            Saints

    Tyreek Hill, 26                     Chiefs

    Amari Cooper, 26                Raiders

    Nelson Agholor, 27              Eagles

    Sterling Sheppard, 26         Giants

    DeVante Parker, 27             Dolphins

    Cameron Meredith, 27       Saints

    AJ Green, 32                         Bengals

    DeMaryius Thomas, 32      Broncos

    DeSean Jackson, 33             Buccs

    Emmanuel Sanders, 33      Broncos

    etc.

    Plus a few stud LBs

    Shaq Thompson, 26            Panthers

    Jaylon Smith, 25                  Cowboys

    Myles Jack, 24                      Jaguars

    Deion Jones, 25                    Falcons

    & a few more.

Ballard obviously must know this. Might be why he's waiting to invest heavily opposite of T.Y. & into the LB core. Most of those teams have either young QBs about to get paid or they have aging QBs that might retire soon & leave the team in a sticky situation.

  8. Guys I'll be watching this year for potential FA next year:

(I'll tier them as I feel is appropriate)

Tier 1: (Highly unlikely to hit FA)

    Anthony Barr, OLB - 27

    David Johnson, RB - 27

    JaDeveon Clowney, OLB/DE - 26

    DeMarcus Lawrence, DE - 27

Tier 2: (Solid players who are gonna get paid, but wont break the bank)

    Tevin Coleman, RB - 26

    Devin Funchess, WR - 25

    David Irving, DT - 26

Dante Fowler Jr., DE - 25

    Shaquil Barrett, OLB - 26

    Tier 3: (Potential Starters)

    Ja'Wuan James, RT - 27

    Jordan Mills, RT - 28

    Datone Jones, DE - 29

    AJ Cann, G - 27

Tier 4: (Fliers who would seem to fit)

    Chris Conley, WR - 26

    Sammy Coates, WR - 26

    Kevin White, WR - 27

    Opinions?

  9. Damontae Kazee is replacing Keanu Neal for the Falcons. He stepped in & played pretty well. Had a solid touchdown-saving open field tackle last night. Falcons dropped a 5th rounder in Kazee last year, so best believe Dan Quinn & company will ride him out to see what they've got. Kazee looked good coming out of San Diego State. He was actualluy on my want/watch list for the 2017 draft.

Very limited production over 4 years? Sounds like a horseshoe guy! Bring him in!

Lol, well he was the RB3 behind Jay Ajayi & Kenyon Drake, both solid players.

He's got an average 3.6 ypc during his career, but he's also caught 85 balls & 6 scores.

He'll be a solid rotational/situational player that can play special teams as well. Sounds like a good team player to me.

  11. Orlando Scandrick is set to become a free agent. I realize he's 31 and isn't going to be a long term answer by any means. That being said though, he obviously fits the Tampa 2 to an extent and has good experience. So he could potentially be a good mentor/teacher for the young guys we have like Wilson, Hairston, Green, etc. He should come on a cheap deal, maybe even the league minimum, so that bodes well for Ballard to sign him.

    Whats the consensus on this?

My bad, it was Harrison who they brought in a s a FA agent from the jets.....to replace Hankins.  Point still stands.

Harrison played with Hankins on the Giants in 2016. Harrison signed a 5 year $46 million contract in march of 2016.

The Giants also only had $7 million in cap space last year to work with. Hankins was priced out of their reach, even with him sitting in FA for over a month. I'm sure the Giants would love to have him back on a cheaper deal.

    That would a terrible move.

#37 would be high imo. But if we could give them the #49 pick, that'd be a lot better.

Irving is already proven in the same system we're trying to implement, so it would seem to make some sense.

  14. 1 minute ago, stitches said:

I'm not certain about this but I would assume it would be our choice about which pick to put on the line.

If that is the case I'd be all for getting Irving. He was one of the most disruptive D-linemen last year when he was able to play. He had 7 sacks in 8 games played. Plus he's got experience with Eberflus.

  15. 2 minutes ago, stitches said:

How would you feel if it's David Irving we are after?

I thought about this last night, but was hesitant to give the #37 pick for him.

Do you know which second round pick it would have to be, or could it be our choice of which to give up?

Man if we trade back with Buffalo we can have 2 first rounders, and 5, I repeat 5 2nd round picks! Imagine that? I have never looked forward to a draft as much as this...It'll be Christmas! We still have tons of money too! Bring in Suh and Mathieu and I will start a Chris Ballard fan club...I admit I was short sighted..Ballard is looking like a mad scientist now...

That'd be awesome, but buffalo would be foolish to do that.

    Our position value is 1600

    Bills value for 1/12, 1/21, 2/53, & 2/56 is 2710.

That's not gonna happen. But maybe both seconds and their #12 pick. That'd equal out to 1910. Alot easier to swallow for them.

Oh & Matthieu is with the Texans apparently.
