Filling the roster with good players is what is needed. I don't care what round a player is taken if he can contribute.

In the past we had quite a few good starters but we had no depth. As soon as the starter went down or needed rotated the talent level went way down. We were forced to use players who were not intended to be starters to be starters. The only way to stop that is with good drafting from round one all the way through.

Ballard is not going to turn this team around defensively overnight. It is going to take time.

    PREACH!

As the title suggests, fans that are going crazy over the fact that Ballard hasn't done anything need to relax. The world isn't over because we didn't get Jeffrey or Zeitler or Bouye or Gilmore or any one of the extremely sought after but also way over-paid free agents. If you are one of the above fans, go to: http://www.nfl.com/freeagency#tab=rankings or any website's basic top 100 free agents. You will notice as you go down the list that there are MANY MANY decent, good football players that can help this defense.

Our defense right now is bottom shelf, and terrible. We need to remember that we just have to build it to average as a starting point to be competitive again. That doesn't have to happen with a few superstars who likely won't live up to their contracts.

It is much easier to sign slightly overpriced deals to twice the number of free agents who are decent than to sign one or two crazy deals that might not work out and then we are at cap issues down the line. It is much easier to unload smaller overpriced contracts than huge ones that are blockbuster and messed up. List of players still available that would be interesting players to discuss as we move forward.

    Defensive lineman:

    Brandon Williams

Poe (might not need to break the bank if he wants a 1 or 2 year prove it deal)

    Hankins

    Bennie Logan

    Sheard

    Linebackers:

Hightower (though probs will have a crazy contract)

    Zach Brown

    Kevin Minter

John Simon (really want us to get this guy, could be like a Walden level signing who actually does become a solid football player for us)

    DeAndre Levy

    Jarvis Jones

CBs (though this is a position where its better to go with the draft cause of the insane top level talent and depth):

    Claiborne

Amukamara (though probs will get a really large contract)

    Safeties:

    TJ McDonald

Byrd (could give him another chance)

Lets discuss some of these guys, what do you guys think? I certainly don't approve of all of them but we can certainly shore up a few starting positions (especially at linebacker) while we work our draft magic for the next two years. All this without breaking the bank (we have like ~30 million remaining after taking into account draft signings and emergency fund).

NIce, go with the A. Rodgers, "Relax". I agree!

All of these 1st Day, WAY overprice signings are not the way to go for depleted roster looking to "Build Within" & raise our floor. I'm on board with CB's philosophy toward team-building. I coach College Rugby and I'm constantly Recruiting as I know it's the best way to build my Team; other tactics have been tried, yielding very unwanted results.

I feel that Cleveland went BIG on FA's and in trades but won't overtake their division any time soon because they draft "5 WRs" and play a numbers game that only works for baseball. I'd rather sit back and watch the early birds jump all over each other to outbid and take FA's that may or may not help their team win and all the while We ruminate over FA additions, discern a proper value to offer them (the price goes down the longer they are unsigned), and come April select future Colts that build Our Team within that We'll develop young to help Us win!

    A couple of things.

    1) Kareem Hunt is probably no longer a 3rd down guy.  He was a guy I liked in the 3rd round, too.  His combine was pretty meh.  Not horrible, but he certainly didn't impress either.  If he can improve on his pro day, maybe.  But I find myself questioning whether he's a day 2 player.

    2) Williams - you're going to have to specify which Williams you are talking about.  There are 3 RBs with the same last name.  But I assume you're talking about Jamaal given your brief description.  I've made my thoughts on him known, but suffice it to say that I wouldn't touch him until the 5th round, but I wouldn't be comfortable drafting him until the 6th round.

    3) Cohen - this guy is literally teh opposite style running back to J Williams.  I wouldn't trust him to take on blocking NFL defensive lineman and linebackers early in his career.  He needs to add some weight, but he really does compare well to Darren Sproles (lofty, to be fair) except that he doesn't have any real experience returning kicks/punts.  He also needs to try to stop scoring by all means necessary on ever play trying to bounce outside or 180.  Learn when to just put your head down and get what you can.

I agree with Cohen and J. Williams points you've made, each player would be a very "special trait"/ 1 tool player. -Williams is a power back with little wiggle & needs to improve his vision if he were to be used on every down. His stock is down after the combine, but I wasn't expecting him to show anything that illustrates his ability to bring the hammer. -Cohen is the "Adam Dunn" of Football; it's a homerun or nothing! He looked like he has a solid build running at the combine (with no other player around to show height disparity) then I saw his film and playing style. IF he can bring some return ability to a team then he'll have a roster spot, IF he can catch the ball out the back field and be like Dante Hall or Tyreek Hill in open field then he'll be on an NFL team, but he's definitely not going through the tackles on 4th and 1, like (J. Williams) a power back would. Cohen is a "Dancer" with electric movement, though he doesn't possess enough bulk or skill to block on third downs, he has something that any team could use as a special weapon and I'd be happy if could bring that to Colts roster; to round-out the team. But he's not a feature back, and that's fine, could help Us win.

For Kareem Hunt the combine wasn't a great "interview" to all 32 teams watching, but that's fine. Like what Bill Polian says, "Go check the Tape!", so the combine isn't a first impression; his tape is. And though his forty and jumps weren't what one expected or hoped for, his game film illustrated his shiftiness on the field and "rocket" effort, which can't be measured in combine drills. If he could illustrate his elusiveness at the combine then his stock would register at Day 2, but I don't care if his stock is down or if other teams grade him lower; if anything that's good cause he may be available in the 4th Round and that's AWESOME if CB drafts a potential 3 down back w/ catching ability that late. Honestly, I don't care where a player is drafted to Us, as long as they get drafted by Us or join Our roster as an UDFA, my main point is: Hunt is a good player that could help Us win and if he's drafted later because the combine then We're more likely to have a well-rounded Draft when We take Day 2 players later then the 3rd Round.

Combine is finally finished. It shook up my mock more than anticipated. The Colts still come out of the draft okay and I think they make some small moves in FA:

    FA:

    Cut Arthur Jones

    Re-Sign:

    Jack Doyle, TE

    Darius Butler, CB

    Sign:

Paul Worrilow, ILB-A cheap option that the Colts have expressed interest in. 2013 UDFA who led the Falcons in tackles in 2013-2015. Only 26

Larry Warford, OG- Might come at a little higher cost range but should be cheaper than TJ Lang. Only 25. Immediate starter at RG while Haeg and Clark battle for RT.

    Draft:

Round 1: Dereck Barnett, OLB Tenn.- S guy who was sick at the combine but had a superb 3 cone that makes you realize he has more bend than originally thought. High character guy as proven by his tenacity at the combine. Will clean up his numbers at pro day. Starting rush OLB

Round 2: Raekwon McMillan, ILB OSU- I've been saying for awhile that he's underrated. His numbers at the combine were good and proved he is plenty athletic. The tape shows he's excellent in coverage on RBs(watch his Penn State Tape) and I've seen him make plays against Jake Butt . Day 1 starter

Round 3: Eddie Jackson, FS Alabama- Didn't see him at the combine but his tape speaks for him enough. Although they don't always light it up at the next level, Nick Saban coached DBs are well coached and usually ready to go immediately. May need some fine tuning but he'll compete with Green since Adams is gone.

Round 4: Wayne Gallman, RB Clemson- The RB class is deep and there's a number of guys you could slot here. But I like Gallman's ability in the pass game and well rounded game. The Colts will be creative with how they use him. Kansas City got away with not having a true franchise back with Charles out by getting creative. Spencer Ware had 900 yards and if used right Galvin can be that type of versatile weapon that Ballard will know from his KC days.

Round 4: Jarron Jones, NT/DE Norte Dame- An often injured player but man is he special. Listen to these measureables. 6,6", 316 pounds, and 35 1/2 inch arms. Tape is hard to find because he's been injured so much but I'll leave the link to his Miami tape where he's mesmerizing. Coaches concerned about his passion for the game but I think it's overstated. I'm not sure if his best position is NT or 5-tech but the guy has major potential.

Round 5: Brandon Langley, CB Lamar- A Georgia transfer I like him as a developmental CB. He got shown up at the Senior Bowl but Mayock said it was because they played him in off coverage when he's much better in man-press. He's 6'0" and ran a fast 4.43 at the combine that shocked me. I hope he last here.

    Round 6:

Austin Rekhow, P Idaho- Some may say we don't need to draft a punter but the chances of a 6th round pick on offense or defense making the team are slim. With Rekhow you get a guy who can handle punting and kickoff duties like Mcafee did. And if Ballard nails the draft like I have outlined here then this is a fine pick. If We don't get Doyle back the. I'll take the TE George Kittle from Iowa instead.

Overall I think I did good enough here. I closed up the whole at ILB and created competition to improve Morrison and Jackson. Barnett gives us a rush LB while we try and find an eventual SAM. CB is still an issue but you can't fix it all in 1 draft and Ballard isn't going to go crazy in FA. Langley could be a solid number 3 by next year but I brought Doyle back. RB is fixed. Depending on the Parry situation we have Jones who could be good early. If not he's a good replacement for Kerr as a rotational guy. I think this would be a good offseason based on the mess that Ballard walked into.

Before the Combine, TE Kittle was my Favorite late-round pick and potential STEAL of the Draft. Then he ran 4.52 and it didn't change my opinion on him, now I just hope that other teams don't draft him, after he opened some eyes. He weighed in little more than RB Fournette, is taller, and ran within a 1/100 of second.

Speed is not his game though.

THE GUY CAN BLOCK!!! And better than that, he's WILLING to Block with all-out effort! I Loved having the Colts from Iowa that we took in Bob "The Hitman" Sanders & Dallas Clark, with their HEART and effort w/ +Speed. Kittle is line to continue this prolific Hawkeyes-to-Colts legacy, but better yet he could be the Future (cause we never want to go back to the past) that leads us to having GREAT COLTS teams because he would help round-out the roster. You never can have too many good players.

I see him being more of a Jack Doyle (with better speed) than a Dallas Clark because of his multi-faceted ability to contribute to BOTH phases of the Offense. I Believe that Luck would make him better as a Receiver and Kittle would make Us better in the Run game, especially because "The BEST ability is AVAILABILITY" and Kittle could jump in Line for Us on Day One, & if one of Our TE can't play if something happened.

  5. With there being so much depth in this EDGE class, and the dire need for us to add an effective Pass Rush, I think it behooves CB to select at least 2 pass rush specialist or more. Not only EDGE Defenders. Here a list of prospects I'd Draft to add to our QB pressures.

Reddick - Would be a Phenomenal Pick at - #15 & can play Inside or Outside Backer.

Tak - Beast of an ATHLETE and can contribute once he's healthy.- #15 would be Awesome

    M. Adams - Has sick agility for a DLineman & gets after the QB, as well stuffs the Run game .- 2nd Round or later if lucky

    J. Jones - Can knife through the OLine and disrupt the Offense in the Run & Pass game. Should be available late due to injury concerns, but is worth a later "project" Pick. 3rd Round is optimistic but can be a STEAL.

Willis - His 3-cone time flashes, as did the measurables w/ the forty-time. -2nd Round or later (unlikely)

Kpassagnon - Has great length and is a good athlete. Looks like he sheds or tosses OLineman and causes disruptions. 3rd Round would be good value.

-OVERALL, I don't really care just who the selections are more than their being able to get Us to more Wins, add pressure to the Offense & keep points off the scoreboard for opposing teams. That's why I hope we select and Pass Rusher and a CB with Our 1st & 2nd Round Picks. There's a lot of prospects that I left off the list but some of them will be gone by #15 and some I feel will be drafted before our 2nd Round selection. The main point with this list to illustrate that we can provide QB pressure with Our DLineman as well as EDGE Defenders. I wouldn't be surprised if CB brings in Poe or drafts a NT that can attack in BOTH phases of the Offense.

  6. Of all those 7 players, I'm keen on Hunt, Douglas, or Williams as a possible piece to add to our "Monster".

RB Hunt - brings multi-faceted tools, agility, and strong burst. 3rd Round or later would be a good value pick.

CB Douglas - Has good size and range, liken him to a man-to-man cover corner, prototype size but needs refinement. 3rd Round or later, as a potential project that could take over for Vontae Davis, someday.

RB Williams - Has an NFL physique & brings the hammer with his carries, tough runner that won't go down easy, & could spell Frank Gore and learn to improve his excellent interior running with Gore's leadership. 4th Round selection is optimistic but feasible in this deep RB class.

I was highest on Hunt & McNichols as our 3rd Round selection, if we don't draft a RB in the 1st, but I watched film on this guy after seeing his combine numbers - http://draftbreakdown.com/players/tarik-cohen/

RB Tarik Cohen - would be a Late Round Steal for us! He wouldn't need our feature back, but I like his effort & low-center of gravity for 3rd Down blocking, but his catching out of the backfield, outrageous elusiveness, flashing speed, and his ability to command Defenses to need more than one defender to tackle him makes him a potential Diamond in the Rough - in this RB Class! Regardless of draftomg a RB early, I'd Draft him for depth.
