Frank is too nice to be the guy running the show.  He's an OC and I think one of the better ones, because he has a strong tendency to balance his attack.

Too nice? Nah, heard that with Dungy, Caldwell, Lovie, etc. It simply isn't factual.

I defended Frank Reich to the very end, and still believe he is a good coach so I might be biased ever so slightly but this league is ultimately about talent and innovation....mainly talent though. How's McVay looked devoid of a functional QB? How bout the greatest coach of all time? How's he looking?

The issues Reich faces now are being overly simplified and we've addressed many over time on these pages. Ultimately this is a results business so he's going to face the music sooner rather than later but it's got nothing to do with niceness or toughness or any of those emo-platitudes. When he had quality in Indy, his teams were better than they should have been.

Would you offer him a big raise right away to try to buy another season out of him? Would it even matter?

This is why I definitely prefer an offensive HC, but regardless, teams should have a deep stable of offensive assistants, and a succession plan.

Stability doesn't hurt but honestly if Stroud's as good as I think he is, he is going to be one of those guys who MAKES coaches rather than the other way round. I think he's that good. Slow should ride this wave as long as he can and cash out nicely

You know, the AFC South teams gets a bad rap but if you look at the history, even during the Manning years there were some times where the Jags and Titans were tough teams:

'98 Jaguars were division leaders (we weren't in that division yet but still)

'99 Jags go 14-2 and the TItans go 13-3 (we still weren't in the division but those two teams were the top of the AFC)

    '00 Titans dominate at 13-3.

'01 Titans and Jags fall off.

'02 New division and the Titans go 11-5 to be the first AFC South champs.

'03 Titans share a record of 12-4 with us, we win the head to head so we get the division championship.

'04 We go 12-4, the rest fall off.

'05 We have one of the best years ever at 14-2, but the Jags also went 12-4.

'06 Super Bowl year for us, Titans and Jags each go 8-8.

'07 We go 13-3, Jaguars again nip at the heels with an 11-5 record.

'08 The Titans pass us and win the division at 13-3, while we go 12-4.

'09 Near perfect season going 14-2 Super Bowl loss, Texans begin to rise and go a respectable 9-7.

'10 Entire AFC South falls a bit, we go 10-6.

So during all of those Manning years, our divisional opponents were playing some damn good football too. You don't just win 12-14 games without being a good team. Not as weak as some claim!

    Good perspective

Hopefully they give the interim head coach Antonio Pierce a greater shot than they did Rich Bisaccia. I thought I recognized the name Antonio Pierce. He played here, with the Giants. He was a leader when he was with the Giants. Do you think he can be a leader of men as head coach.

Yeah he was a fiery player, leader then so I can see it now. He's been coaching toon unlike a certain center. Oops

Yeah I'm a homer at heart and was like ...uggh man, he could be decent, sucks for my team. He seems to be competent.

Hoping he's (Levis) a dud obviously...

If the AFCS ends up 4/4 with young QBs, I'm going to be a happy man, this division has been the laughing stock too long.

Obviously AR will be the best of the bunch :)

  6. He needs to get truly healthy, then get his instincts back. Without that, he's certainly worse than the guys currently starting. Worse than Bobby O who joined the Giants. He's not worth the contract given.

With all that said, I'd argue that as long as he's healthy, the only way the instincts come back is by playing.

It stinks for him but this is football, it doesn't stop for anyone. Not Luck, not Peyton, and certainly not Shaq.

Many here we're ecstatic when they heard that McD would be hired as head coach. I thought it was a bad move. I'm not really sure why so many fans were enamored with him.

The guy is supposed to be the next level of offensive coaching. Unfortunately it doesnt matter what you know if you can't lead MEN. His biggest issue was always the soft stuff not what he knew. Either way hopefully other folks get a shot at HC jobs and this guy doesnt keep getting these chances.

Of course it looks bad…in retrospect.  At the time he was the OC of the most successful offense in NFL history.  I don’t think anyone “has major egg on his face.”

It was a major debate though. There was a heavy PR splash selling stories of how Josh had grown up.

NcF, I hear your points but it wasn't just the rivalry. It was the risk of hiring that guy who clearly had maturity/leadership issues from that team, a combination of factors that told a story of a GM who wasn't reading the room or seeing things clearly. Combine that with his refusal to build teams a certain way (which he said he had to change last offseason)...well....as you say he gives his detractors ammo.

For me, that move is my Ballard legacy at the moment. If AR hits as I think and hope he does, then sure Ballard vaults up to Polian levels. QB changes everything.

  9. Chris Ballard doesn't get enough heat for hiring the Snake.

Terrible decision making, and everything else since then has been....watch and see.

If AR hits then that's Ballard's saving grace otherwise he's going down as less successful than the prior GM, likability be damned

I hope you realize that in a 17 game season it’s only 57 yards per game. 1,000 in a season is not what it used to be

Nah, that math's wrong. It's around 59 yards a game now where it was 62 yards a game before. It aint what it used to be but that's a difference of 3 yards a game.

    3 yards.

It’s both. It’s not having the personnel at DE to create consistent pressure. It’s the DBs and lack of talent they possess. And it’s also the DC who keeps employing this soft zone scheme which allows guys wide open in the middle.

It's what the GM wants isnt it? The last guy was same. The cries/complaints go back to the Dungy days.

I'm generalizing of course but the systemic issues seem to come from higher than the DC/HC.

My hot take…Bradley gets fired at the bye week

He likely makes it to the end of year but this Colts defense historically touches its toes against QBs like this. It's a known problem. Gus is a good coach but it does feel a bit like he's spent a long time trying to recreate the legion of boom and that drive hampers his acceptance of reality

This is almost brain breaking for me. Two reasons.

First, why was Richardson facing "perfect coverage" so often? Is it about the opposition, was it a play calling thing, were we tipping something before the snap? That's a weird stat, and the fact that Minshew's split is less stands out to me; however, it's still higher than average, so it makes me think it's systemic. It's encouraging that Richardson was managing such a high EPA vs that kind of coverage, with so little experience, and a below average completion percentage.

Second, what the heck are the Niners doing over there? Shanahan is playing a different game than everyone else. Purdy deserves some credit, he makes some really nice throws to the second level. But look how easy they're making it for him... Wow.

Yeah, I've been looking at where Purdy is for the last 15mins trying to figure out exactly what/how that's even possible.
