Because RB is not a important position.  The colts are much more desperate for defensive playmakers.

Not an important position??? Please look at our rbs and reevaluate that comment. We're about to play the Broncos. But running back is not an important position...I wouldn't be surprised if they don't pass the ball at all. Look what Gurley did as a rookie on a team where he's their entire offense...and no one can stop him. Now picture Cook, Chubb or Fournette in our offense....

I don't think there is any question that this team needs playmakers on defense. I for one think that in this draft Indy should come out with at least 2 quality OLBs and CBs. Also a young talented RB would help dramatically.

Where do you see the Colts picking and who are some players you want them to target? I know this is a very early analysis of things but just give an educated guess on who might be available.

As of now I personally want OLB Charles Harris round 1. Then round 2 go after the best CB available.

I see us drafting in the top 10. This draft needs to be on the defensive side of the ball...period. We do need a back though and the draft is deep at running back. Fournette, Cook and Chubb are round 1 material. We need to get one of them. If that's the first round, so be it. IMO

Hey everyone. I know this is looking so far ahead, but it is how I always am looking at things. The Colts have committed to building through the draft, which I like. As disastrous as the 2013 draft was, we finally have some key pieces who look like they are going to develop, especially from last years, and I like this years so far in the preseason. The DL looks deep, and I believe the OL will be good, but it will take time to grow. I can name several teams who finally went all in and drafted high for several seasons for the OL, but it takes time to develop. We are impatient, I am the worst. OL from college spread to Pro is the biggest adjustment now. Teaching is not there in College, since the blocking is so different, so give it time.

OK, so the point of this is the Cap next year. If you count the carry over from this year, we are going to have over 65M in cap space next year. We have 19M right now for the season left, and 49M for 2017, if my calculations are right (numbers are from OTC). On the other hand, we have no FA's I can argue we have to bring back, although I would like Walden, Kerr, Doyle, and possibly Moore back at the right prices. Mathis, I believe this will be his last year. Adams is up there in age, and I think Green and Geathers will be taking the place of our two starters there. So the FA's we have if we decide to sign are not going to be big money contracts. We have Andrew signed, and still have huge capspace. The only other contract which pops into my head is to extend Montcrief, which I will assume he will be our one priority.

So we are going to have a lot of cap space. We know pass rusher, LB, and CB are our areas of need. I am going to assume the OL line grows over the year, and we have a lot of depth for each of the positions. So what do we do with all the cap space?

I am not at this point going to look at the FA's who might be available next year. I just want to see what everyone thinks. Will we alter the draft only approach? I think we have to, but I don't want to spend on middling players. I would be more willing to do what the Giants did this year, to make the Defensive unit more nasty if we can get a true impact player or two. CB needs to be address also, since they take awhile to develop. So this is more of a primer. What are your thoughts on the Cap and how we handle it. It has to be looked at differently next year. 2011 (Polian) and 2013 were such bad drafts, it has left us with few FA's to resign. Love what we have done since though. So where do the dollars go. Do we spend some? I believe yes, but what strategy and where? Looking more at the where and the strategy instead of the players since we don't know who will be available, but if you have some ideas, please jump in. All answers and thoughts are welcome!

If we can spend, but spend wisely in free agency on stud defensive players specifically pass rushers and have a hell of a draft (SPECIFICALLY DEFENSE-ALL POSITIONS), we will be a force next season! I do like Dalvin Cook a lot though. We need a running back. Every other pick needs to be on the defensive side of the ball. We committed to the offensive side this past draft and it may pan out...we'll see. But our defense is atrocious and needs rebuilding/depth.

Too much pressure on the defense?  They stunk from the second they took the field.

True, but if your defense is on the field more than your offense is...that's pressure, that's pitiful. Just ridiculous. Defense (players) wins games, not Pagano. If the entire season looks like this, I don't see Pagano or Grigson staying. I'm not being negative, just stating my opinion.

the part I asked you to expand on was this:

Irving is an inside linebacker.  They don't typically get that many pass rushing opportunities so judging an ILB on how many sacks he gets per year is just stupid.  As for how many tackles, well I guess this would be a better stat to look at than sacks, but still, tackles can be a very misleading stat.  Just because an ILB gets tackles doesn't mean he's doing his job well.  He could be getting those tackles by chasing down a runner after missing his gap.  It's near impossible to accurately judge an ILB's abilities just by using a statline.

Last year, the biggest problem with the defense was a completely inept offense that couldn't sustain a drive longer than 3 plays.  Overall though, the defense definitely hasn't sucked the entire time that Pagano has been here.  There have  been many times that the defense helped get the team out of a big hole that the offense put the team in.  They  haven't been great...I'm not saying that by any means, but to say they've sucked is wrong also.  But to know that, you have to actually watch games and not look at stat lines.

Nice.  You do understand that they try to keep this a family friendly site, right?

There's definitely work to do, but that was a given.  Of course there's going to be work to do after the first preseason game.  That's the case for all 32 teams.

Look, we can agree to disagree. The defense couldn't stop a cold last year, the year before that or the year before that. The offense stumbled last year when Luck got hurt but ole faithful stepped in and played tremendous. I don't claim to know everything but I do know defense wins championships. Pagano is built from that cloth (Ravens). I'm glad he is being allowed to control things a bit more. I like Green and Morrison a lot and I see the vision Pagano sees. Especially in them. Toughness, smarts and grit. Playing soft gets you nothing. I'm tired of seeing every team we play run all over us and not really have to pass. We can't stop water from running.

  6. Pardon the negativity but Irving is trash, Moore is trash as well. Neither has proven anything really. With injuries to the two trashy injury prone linebackers, why not just go with the rookies. It really doesn't look as if we can coach up a defense/players anyway. I'm about fed up with this sorry defense we put out on the field every season. Just * poor.

Again, pardon my negativity. Had to get that off my chest.

    Go Colts

  7. Depth at the running back position is questionable. In next yesrs draft we should really target Samaje Perine. Fournette will be gone, plus he's anot her weapon for Luck with an aging Gore. Well be ok this year. But in my opinion Perine is the answer.

  8. Offensive line in the draft is a smoke screen. IMO, I think we will address the position in free agency. The thought of winning free agency is crazy. We dont have to win it. Just get quality veteran players that solidify our line. The draft will be used for building that monster D and getting younger. I do think we will draft Elliott or Billings. Either pick I will be happy with.

  9. As a first time head coach that dealt with more adversity than some of us, I commend Chuck Pagano. He's taken the high road this season. Is he partly the blame? Yes, because he's the coach, but if you (Grigson) dont allow him to be the head coach, what did you expect from him really?...To be the spokesman for the team, to say all the right things. The facts have to be made clear. We all as fans have been fed a number of stories that just don't add up, or makes perfect sense. I for one dont want to see Chuck leave/fired. He's a players coach, respected coach, liked coach, winning coach and more importantly a coach that deserves the true opportunity to do what he was hired to do. Irsay....do the right thing.
