  1. There is no better platform in which to measure QB's performance than the playoffs. Given the fact that Manning has had a high number of playoff games I thought this was a prudent measuring stick to utilize. Add to that the playoffs bring an all-out environment, as you know, the players leave nothing on the field. Narrowing the scope to omit regular season games wasn't a tricky maneuver on my part. I did this not to bolster my point through omission, rather, I did so to eliminate the x-factors involved in regular season games. i.e. late season games with players sitting and other dynamics which could taint the overall perception of the stats.

Yes, I stated these facts as proof. I suppose I could have stated falsehoods as proof, or conversely, stated facts as non-truths, but that would have been disingenuous, wouldn't it?

    Also....L0L what?

Your argument is that Mannign has problems w/ 3-4 defenses. I offered an argument to the contrary (for reasons you failed to reply to). Manning has beaten the Jets. Manning has beaten the Ravens. Manning has beaten the Patriots. The Chargers are the only team w/ a 3-4 defense that he hasn't beaten, but he's put up very impressive numbers, hence he doesn't have difficulty scoring on 3-4 defenses. It's a comparison of Manning early in his career versus later in his career.

And way to cherry pick one phrase (not even a complete thought) from one sentence of my post. My entire point was that you can't represent these limited statistics and state that Manning overall has issues w/ a certain defensive scheme when there is evidence to the contrary. Manning can't figure out one 3-4 defense in the regular season and then be completely baffled by another 3-4 defense in the playoffs (and then have you chalk it up to the defensive theory and not the players/coaching/individual defensive coordinator).

But hey, keep on cherry picking.

  2. Peyton Manning went to Tennessee.. If Manning had gone to Wake Forest they would have had a winning record even with Caldwell as the head coach.

He's along for the ride, he isn't driving the team. So toot his horn if you wish but there are plenty of NFL coaches that could take a Manning team to the playoffs. Calling him Radio is pointless, but acting like he is the reason we have won anything is also pointless. His timeouts were mind-numbing. This isn't a team that needs an On-the-job-training type of coach. This team needs a coach that can actually add to what has been built, not hold it back.

People said the same thing about Dungy. People can say the same thing for a lot of great coaches that have had great players play for them. Fact is you're not there in the locker room. The only thing we can go on is that he serves in a role that every head coach in the NFL serves in, for better or for worse.

You're not there during all of the practices, which means that you have no insight to prove that he's just some body filling a vacant role while Manning orchestrates the entire team. He's made bad choices but every single coach in the history of the NFL has made bad choices.

Never once did I say he's the reason we won anything but hey keep on putting words in my mouth.

I'm not a Caldwell cheerleader but I'm not going to blindly bash the guy when he's delivered (especially last year when we had the amount of injuries to our team).

  3. one great stoic coach has won the super bowl since tom landry. tony dungy, in my opinion the colts just need an agressive coach to change this

national preception of being a soft team that has under achieved in the playoffs. i hope he proves allot of us wrong. time will tell. go colts!

Glad you're offering this as your opinion, I'd hate to take what you said as having some sort of logical basis.

  4. my bad,i stand corrected it is a whopping 26 and 63, lol just a tick behind lee corso. has anyone heard of

a possible rift between caldwell and moore as the reason for moores departure? one of the guys on the nfl network implied

moore wanted to be in indy but was'nt retained. any truth to this or just speculation?

Right because no coach who has ever had a losing record at any establishment has ever gone on to accomplish great things. Like Bill Belichick. Not like he had a losing record in the NFL no less. Geez. No team should ever give a coach who has a losing record a chance... oh wait.

I hope you realize the whole Wake Forest argument is as stupid and pointless as calling him Radio (and mentally challenged individual) while attempting to convey a meaningful post. I know not everyone has called him that, but to varying degrees people have mocked him for having a stoic expression. Those individuals must want a raving lunatic on the field. Throwing tantrums and beating his fists on the ground when a flag isn't thrown (I'm aware I'm going to the opposite extreme, but I am affording JC the same level of respect for his detractors as his have for him).

"Talk low, talk slow and don't talk too much".

  5. Here is a comprehensive look at what has caused this "myth" to perpetuate;

    This information was compiled in 09. It is Peyton Manning's career statistics against the 3-4 and 4-3 respectively. I have added the pertinent numbers from last seasons NYJ playoff;

    http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/1178/manning-s-playoff-record-vs-3-4-defenses-not-good

^^Exactly as I have been stating and, for whatever reason, being told I am wrong. Often more passing yards, yet more INTS to TDS. Last years playoff game vs the NYJ saw him tally a very modest stat column, however zero INTS. So this was a bit of a change from his overall career against 3-4 defense in post-season.

    Career Stats against 3-4 in Playoffs;

    W-L:

    6-3 against 4-3

    1-5 against 3-4

    TD-INT:

    15-9 @ (4-3)

    7-8 @ (3-4)

    Sacked:

    6 @ (4-3)

    13 @ (3-4)

I really cannot argue any further. I have presented a strong case as to why the "myth" that Peyton has troubles against the 3-4 is actually based on statistical fact. The numbers indicate he throws less TDS while throwing more INTS. These numbers aren't dramatic and eye popping, however they show a disparity that cannot be ignored, nor titled as a myth.

The thing is, that facts can absolutely be misrepresented. You've presented a selection of games of the Colts against teams in the playoffs. That right there limits the pool of selection. Now within that list, you state these facts as proof when they more or less represent a narrowed view. Of about the dozen teams using the 3-4 defenses, Manning early on in his career had problems w/ New England (3-4), Pittsburgh (3-4) and San Diego (3-4). The problem is that more recently in his career Manning has had little to no problem scoring points against these teams.

Since the link you posted doesn't offer a breakdown, I'm going to go w/ the above explaination that while overall his numbers aren't great, Manning has recently had very little trouble w/ the 3-4 (not to mention he's easily handled all the other teams w/ the 3-4 in the league including the Baltimore Ravens who have been considered one of the better defenses in league history).

As another poster stated before, it has more to do w/ better teams employing the 3-4 than the theory of the 3-4 being the bane of Manning's existance.

As for the original topic of the thread; lot of people are worried about Houston. What makes you think Manning hasn't been preparing for this? He has a tv and probably a computer. Do you honestly think he hasn't heard or seen what Houston has been doing? Odds are he's got better access than the media to what other teams are doing. While he's been sitting around when other teams are "getting better", Manning undboubtedly has been watching, studying, studying and studying. Going over gameplan after gameplan after gameplan. It is the single greatest mistake any one person can make about Manning when people assume teams now days can throw something at him he hasn't seen before or hasn't prepared for.

  6. I think it'd be pretty awesome if Chad started to act like Barry Sanders after he scored a TD and just calmly handed the ball to the ref and ran back to the sideline. I like to think of Bill Belichik as some kind of evil overlord with dark powers, and Chad being humble in the endzone would cement that for me.

Honestly, if I were an egocentric individual like Ocho (as I am) I think it would be the funniest and the best way to get some headlines to do just that.

  7. You seem angry?

This community has always welcomed NFL fans of all colors to join in. Their opinions are just as valid as ours. We even have a Pats fan for a community moderator (See JJ above).

What you stated above was essentially that Pats fans should shut up and stop bragging about their incredibly successful off-season. As far as I know, none of the pats fans demanded praise for their franchises acquisitions. I believe they were just expecting people to be realistic. If we (Colts) had acquired #85, I bet there would be some excitement on this board. Funny how that works, ain't it?

Your powers of perception are astounding. Able to perceive precise emotion through text. Nevermind simple concepts such as sarcasm, you sir, can see the unseen.

(Psst, this is also sarcasm. I have neither the time nor the energy to waste anger on a message board).

Again, I never said Pats fans can't express their opinions. I have occasionally (very rarely) enjoyed the remarks posted by some Pats fans (JJ included). My comment (to elaborate twice now) was that Pats fans should not expect universal praise of a trade on a rival's website. To expect otherwise would be great for humanity (socially speaking) but make the rivalry much less interesting. I nowhere near stated what you claimed that Pats fans [or other franchise fans for that matter] should shutup when it comes to acquisitions or other bits of news.

I believe that Colts fans are being realistic. 85, while a very talented player, does have his drawbacks which are perfectly open to criticism.

  8. There's nothing stopping you from seeing that this is a big plus for NE, nothing save for your own bias. This is a solid move by the Pats and it will pay off. Many of y'all said the same negative jealous nonsense when they acquired Moss, and how'd that work out?

Chad will flourish in that system, I have no doubt about it. I'm not saying Chad's gonna get that Gold jacket, but he will do well for them.

Oh I'm sorry. I must have missed where I said it wasn't a good move? Please by all means tell me where I said anything negative about the acquisition?

    I didn't? Huh, fancy that.

What I replied to was the fact that a Pats fan, commenting on a Colts website why people aren't lavishing praise on the trade and why some are seeing it as a negative. My comment was directed at the irrational expectations that fans from a rival team would be unanimously praising of a trade involving a rival team.

  9. I said the MAJORITY of players, not all. Yes, I watched the road to both Super Bowls. I know that some young players were instrumental, but they were in no ways the main reasons. Yeah, you seriously can't look at some of Polian's picks over 5 years ago and compare them to ones he's made in the past 5 years. To do so would be crazy. Yes, we have gotten great players in the past 5 years, but no, they have not been as good as they were before.

And who was responsible for keeping those players in Indy? Oh yea Polian and the FO.

  10. After learning the Clint Session left to sign with the Jaguars, it really made me think about how thin the Colts are at LB. Sure Kavell Connor and Pat Angerer played decently last year, but I don't think they're the solution to helping out run defense. Middle linebacker is pretty good with Gary Brackett and Pat Angerer, but on the outside we're really not good at all.

The Colts haven't done anything so far to make the team any better than it was after the draft. And honestly, with Peyton getting older you want proven players NOW. Especially on the defense, they don't have time to waste to see if Kavell Connor is the answer at LB. This is what we need to do.

Sign Justin Durant and Quincy Black - They're both very solid linebackers with good speed and they're solid in coverage. They fit the mold of the Colts "linebacker" speedy and sure tacklers.

Sign a DT - The only one that comes to mind in free agency that hasn't been signed is Mebane and Harris. If the Colts don't sign either, our run defense is going to be just as bad or worse this next year.

Sign a SS - Dawan Landry is still out in free agency. Jeron Johnson and other SS from UDF have already signed with other teams.

While Polian sits on his * all day, most the teams around them are getting better and stronger. Look at the Texans, I know they say this every year, but they might actually beat us out in the division this year. They're a very strong team now. Same with the Jaguars, they've signed some decent free agents and are closing in on a deal with Dawan Landry. The Colts need to step out of their normal setting and go spend some money. This isn't going to cut it and he keeps saying he wants to put talent around Manning to win a Super Bowl, with that means there should be talent around him on the defensive side of the ball too.

And while you sit on your * behind a computer screen, Polian has the resources of a multi-million dollar organization at his disposal. But hey you go ahead and do your Google searches. Perhaps you could lend Polian and the FO some help w/ your genius ideas.

  11. People keep saying "TWO SUPER BOWLS, " yet they don't even think about the fact that the majority of the people that got us to those Super Bowls were drafted over 5 years ago. Lets be honest, Bill has not made the greatest draft picks in the past 5 years. If you look at the players that we got in seasons before that it's ridiculous. I mean sure, we'll get a good player here and there, but not the stuff Polian is known for, and that's just being honest. I don't know if he just got lucky before, or he's lost his touch, but it's not helped the Colts any. The great players are getting old, and the young good players aren't in much supply. Lets just go ahead and face it now. When Peyton is gone, we'll be one of the 3 worst teams for a couple years. We'll get some high picks, maybe Bill will see something he likes and he'll strike gold again. The process will just start itself over again.

And who was responsible for keeping those players from over 5 years ago? Oh right, Polian.

  12. Can I ask a question?

Whats wrong with being 'just another target'? Do we expect him to break records and be a superhero? No...but I love the fact that Brady has another target and another threat.

Are guys like Garcon and Collie and Gonzalez anything special? No...they are just 'another target' for Peyton...but many of you guys run around like they are probowl receivers. This was a good deal for New England...I dont understand why so many are trying to make it sound like its going to fail.

Maybe because it's an INDIANAPOLIS COLTS FANS WEBSITE. So sorry if we don't all unanimously praise the decision. Der.

  13. The Pats, Steelers, Giants, Saints, GB all won the SB from 05-10. (Saints have had 4 PB)

Drafted higher? Does that matter in the 3rd round? Doubtful.

I like Collie, I do, but our 2nd best pick (Bethea 1st IMO) in 5+ years is a slot WR in the 4th round?

Pats won the '04 season, so throw that one out.

And again, the order does count. Unless you have earlier picks, the team w/ the worse record generally picks higher.

  14. Seriously.

Nothing more to contribute to the thread than "The Colts had 2 SB appearances"? No opinions on recent drafts? No opinion on our UDFA list? Just that a core of players from 98-04 led us to the SB.

Let me ask you another question. In 2005 would you say the core of the Colts roster was Peyton/Marv/Freeney/Edge? Now in 2011, would you say the Colts core is Manning/Wayne/Freeney?

What else do you want? You asked if the FO has failed the Colts and he stated it has not. He cited 2 SB appearances in that span w/ one SB win as evidence. Do you want to discount all of that to drafting pre-2005? Sure Polian's drafting more than likely got us the SB win in 06 from pre 05 but the problem is you set a specific timeline to base your criticism on. Did the some catastrophic even occurr in 2005 that re-vamped the entire roster? Are players from 2003, 2004, etc still on the team? Yes? Why is that? Oh the FO signed them while letting go excess baggage. The FO kept these players by not jumping into FA and spending large sums of money said free agents.

Of that "core" you listed, the only players gone are Marv (who retired after the FO asked a declining receiver to take a paycut) and Edge (who released a declining runningback who never had the same success in future endeavors). If anything, the FO saved us from extending bloated contracts to players who would not contribute their worth.

Plus, outside of that "core of players" listed (both recent and previous) you have 50 and 49 respectively other players associated w/ the team. Where did these players come from? FO? Oh, so unless you're trying to say these 3 and 4 players have won 10+ wins all these years then you have to admit that the FO has surrounded these "core" players w/ the talent necessary to win.

  15. The Colts have been widely regarded as one of the best teams in the NFL for nearly 10 years now. While most of the love gets shared amongst Peyton and the Front Office, lets take a look at what the FO has done for us in recent years. 2005-2010

The Colts have had 52 draft picks in that span (although 2010 is still up in the air):

    Pro Bowlers-

    Joesph Addai- 2007

    Antoine Bethea 2007, 2009

    Starters:

    Hayden CB-2005 2nd Rd

Addai RB- 2006 1st Rd* Pro Bowl

Bethea FS- 2006 6th Rd* Pro Bowl

Charlie Johnson OL- 2006 6th rd

    Pollak OL- 2008 2nd RD

    Garcon WR- 2008 6th rd

    Powers DB- 2009 3rd rd

    Collie WR- 2009 4th rd

Colts 1st Rd picks since 05

    05 Marlin Jackson

    06 Addai

    07 Gonzo

    08 None

    09 Brown

    10 Hughes

So, has the new NFL game passed Polian, has it been a success, or has he just had bad luck?

Now I haven't been able to narrow down all of our FA, and UDFA moves yet, so if you have any available, please share, as it will only help in our assessment of the FO.

EDIT: For reference I went thru some other elite teams and pro-bowlers drafted from 2005-2010:

    New England - 6

    Ravens - 3

    Jets - 5

    Cowboys - 5

    Chargers - 4

    GB - 4

    Pitt - 3

    ATL - 2

    NYG - 3

    Phi - 2

Of that list of teams that have put pro bowlers drafted from 05-10, only the Packers, Steelers and Giants have won a SB. All those teams have drafted higher on average than the Colts over the span of time. Plus, Austin Collie would easily have been in the mix for pro bowl. His rookie season alone was very impressive.

  16. We developed Jerry Hughes last year by...... Hiding him or whatever it was we did with him...

    Well, I hope we did....

I don't know about you but I personally don't want to see a whole lot of a rookie playing in place of two rockstars in a position that is crucial to our gameplan. Not to mention DE is notoriously difficult to transition to (NCAA to NFL).

  17. A Colts FA thread, I'm sure this will be filled with Redskins references, o wait.....

Nobody's asking for the Colts to sign the top dog every year, and the posters who continually bring up the Redskins are laughable at best. But this 'building thru the draft' cliche being thrown around is so over used, and over implied. You have a 52 man roster, and roughly 8 draft picks a year, you do the math, now tell me how important it is for proper FA management. To continually give Polian undying gratitude bc he drafted Peyton in 98, Edge in 99 and Freeney 02 is getting out of control. He's clearly botched nearly every draft from 05 till now, and he continues to ride the Manning over Leaf wave. The Indy media is so scared of offending the precious Colts that they don't help in holding the FO accountable, and we as fans are to busy drooling to do it, so now you have an aging team, being pointed aimlessly to the future, being captained by the son of a GM.

    Where to start.

First off, its not just the draft the Colts build through, you also have to factor in UDFA which is a goldmine for someone who knows what they're looking for (Polian). And to state he hasn't done anything since '05 is simply being ignorant of the facts. While some might argue the quality of players, it's not "clearly" obvious as you put it. In fact Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie are prime examples of Polian finding the gems. Throw in Bullitt, Powers, Session and you have a plethora of solid to good players found by the Colts FO.

And you stating that the Colts FO are never criticize or hold the FO accountable? What about the decision to rest? Bob Kravitz, the voice of Indy sports has repeatedly criticized the Colts FO on all kinds of issues.

  18. Here's the thing. Eagles players lost the chance to break up the play. Therefore they had the only option left which was to tackle. You don't tackle by throwing your body against theirs in a full collision. Not only is it a stupid risk to your body (see Bob Sanders) but it risks the ball carrier bouncing off and running in for a 6. Wrap up the ball carrier. Guaranteed to stop the play at contact. Now days players are wanting to "blow up" the play and get known for making the huge hit. Not only is it stupid, it's risking the health of both players. Fundamentals state to wrap up the body and legs to tackle to maximize efficiency and safety.

In this situation, it was illegal, as much as Eagles fans want to cry about it. The rules in play state you can't hit the player in the head w/ the arms, shoulders or helmet. As flawed as those rules are is a different argument. Those are the rules presented and are expected to be adhered to.

I guarantee most of the blow hards that would say players are wimps now have never played against the physical specimens that are present in the NFL today. While the game has taken steps in recent years to prevent injuries (much to the chagrine of said blowhards) it's merely compensating for the larger, faster and stronger players in the league today. If you had a job where you were paid large sums of money but couldn't walk w/ out constant pain or disabling conditions, would you state its better to be tougher?

  19. I'm so tired and frustrated of seeing our DBs give a 7 yard cushion on a 3rd and short. Play calling could be another issue on defense, Coyer's first season was good, but last year was not so great. He will need to have the defense performing well this season or else he should be let go

Or let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt. You said yourself he had a good first year. Then he faced an onslaught of injuries and had to dummy down the defense.

  20. Upgrading the defense? You mean like through the draft? That thing that happens every year?

If we keep decently healthy on both sides of the ball, then yes we win a lot of games. Even have a shot of winning the thing.

As another poster said, if we have a decently healthy team, the Colts are very tough to beat. The defense is built to stop the big play. We put the faith in our HOF QB to score and score often and use the defense to hamper the other teams ability to play keep up. Any time we've been beaten it's been a combination of the offense not scoring and the defense not stopping the other offense. If the offense converts scores on misfires, we win. If the defense stops the other offense, we win. But what most people don't get is that this team is not built to be both. With so much money tied up in the offense one can hardly blame the defense for not havin the firepower to keep up w/ playoff caliber teams every series. And as a GM you wouldn't gameplan that. With a QB like Manning you surround him with as much firepower and every thing he needs to win the game w/ his offense.

  21. Well then, looks like quite the discussion.

Pats taking this chance on Haynesworth is a win win win. Win for the possibility, win for the low risk and win for the "mythos" that is Pats GM/coaching. If he works out, Pats are geniuses, if he fails, Pats risked little and lost little. Smart move overall.

However, seeing tangible results will be interesting to say the least. Let's skip the fact that Haynesworth has a lack of hustle, and assume he's going to do well. How will this impact the rest of the DL for the Pats? They have Wilfork, but aside from the two of them ganging up on the heads of opponents, we don't know how the two will do together nor will we know how Haynesworth will be used. Wait and see.

In terms of the Colts DTs. I'm excited. Granted its my opinion. We've drafted well. I feel we've gone for some great rotational players in different scenarios. But for the sake of caving to the majority of the fanbase commenting on this thread, I'll adjust my opinion:

"POLIAN IS TEH WURST GM EVUR! HE NEEEEEDS DRAFT ALL TEH STARZZZES ND PAID DEM LEEEG VET MINZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!"

Sorry. Polian has drafted incredibly well. The fact that he has only 1 Superbowl win is more an indication to all kinds of factors (not relating to his skill as a drafting GM) that are needed in winning a SB as a team.

Fans are entitled to their opinions, which make forums great, but sometimes you gotta pull a face palm w/ some comments.
