  1. ah now i can stretch my legs with all these bandwagons fans leaving

That really wasn't very nice nor helpful. A 27 year fan isn't just getting on the bandwagon. Take it from a 48 year fan. He's frustrated over bad decisions of the past and sees what may be a re-occurance. He'll come to the realization that as fans it's not important to our careers, lifestyles, or happiness. Life goes on with or without the Colts or football for that matter.

Personally, I decided to make that same decision when pre-season gets here. I'll see how I feel then.

Take a little extra stretch and stroll for me while you're at it.

    Thanks for your support!

  2. With a bona fide QB, this team only needs a few keys to win and contend for a Super Bowl. The linebackers were strong. The offensive and defensive line were much improved. The use of the fullback was a help to the running game. Add some experience into the secondary, pick up a true deep threat to run opposite a re-signed Reggie and this team is a threat.

The new coaching staff is a positive. The draft will be a positive. Once this off season drama is behind the excitement and energy of this team will grow as the season approaches. An experienced QB is the major key to this.

The Colts don't have to wait to be a contender. I don't think Irsay or the new staff are planning on waiting.

  3. It seems this thread proves that there are 1001 way to interpret the individual tweets, interviews, and statements. There are as many ways to interpret the intent and/or purpose of the the same.

Many of the statements that so many take as so surely posturing may in fact not be that at all. Each poster is right and entitled to their opinion but there is not one post in this thread that can be considered fact as intended by those that are being second guessed and interpreted.

Every single comment by PM & JI have been after hours of daily conjecture by tens if not hundreds of individuals with platforms of the pen or microphones. It is equally as likely that PM & JI have felt the need to respond to this obsessive ridiculousness.

Then again, they could be in close communitcation and playing with the pundits as the toys they are.

I believe Peyton Manning has always 100% demonstrated himself to be a class and wise individual. Likewise, Jim Irsay has stood out as a class and experienced owner. After all he had a first hand observation of what not to do.

I trust they will make the right decisions at the right time regardless of what you, me, or any tv personality has to think.

I still believe that a strong armed Peyton Manning is the quickest way to become a Super Bowl contender.

This still applies, but in moving forward it seems clear a few things must happen.

    1) Peyton must be able to play at his high level, otherwise he's not an on the field contributor(for anyone).

    2) Based on calculations of many on this forum the Colts can't afford the cap hit of the 28 mil. This means to keep a healthy PM, he has to be released and signed to a new contract. This assumes the current contract cannot be reworked. Only the Colts admin know this answer for sure. It wouldn't be the first time I would be astonished by the manipulations of an attorney.

Regardless, I point again to the fact that Jim and Peyton (and those they employ) know what they're doing. They will work it out to their desires.

  4. Cool, thanks for expanding on that. I wasn't quite sure what the angle was with that comment so I was just trying to find out. It irks me that Robert Irsay was so vilified about moving the Colts when he was really left with no choice. Just wondering if that was part of your comment or not.

No, the moving of the Colts is one of the few things I give great credit to Bob Irsay and Bill Hudnut. Baltimore always seems to overlook the fact that the city was going to invoke "imminant domain" on the Colts ownership when the court opened the next morning. A clerk called the Irsays. Bob called Hudnut informing him they must be out of town before the court opened and Hudnut called Mayflower.

  5. Is that in relation to trading Unitas, or something else?

Not actually referring to any one specific act. In an interview with Hannah Storm Jim chose to expound upon the first firing of Ted Marchibroda. Over time he's discussed many examples. There was a time that I wondered if we(Colts) would ever survive the trade between Rosenbloom's Colts and Irsay's Rams.

This I know. Jim Irsay has earned his ownership through trial by fire. I was skeptical for years. He's convinced me.

He knows how to handle this situation. So, does Peyton. I quote them both, "we are good friends, we are close, we are like family".

Everyone can choose to believe what they will...

  7. It's pretty simple, IF Manning was anywhere close to being remotely near to what he was before he would call the media to whatever facility that he's working out at and he would throw the ball for all the world to see that he is going to be the QB that can lead this team in the next season. That would put all the speculation and "noodle arm" talk to rest and it would put all the pressure on Irsay to live up to his words that a healthy Manning will be a Colt. He obviously is unable to do that at this time so Irsay is only doing what any good owner should do and that is prepare this team for the future. Like it or not, whether it's this season or another 1-2, Manning will eventually be done in Indy. It's not me pushing him out the door, it's me being realistic that every player's career only lasts so long. Why does everybody that claims they are a Colts fan want to put the legacy of one man over the future of this team? Now here comes all the Manning built this team, etc. And while you can say that he brought this team to the forefront of the league, Joe Montana did they same for the 49ers and they didn't continue to pay him when the ROI wasn't worth it. There won't be any riots, there won't be any possible lynchings for Irsay or Grigson. The Manning bandwagon fans will jump off the ship and be replaced by the Luck bandwagoners and the Colts fans will still be here no matter what. Just my .02

It's just as likely that Manning doesn't feel the need to prove to the media the level of his arm strength. He and Irsay are on the same page and that is all that matters. Those two are not trying to pressure each other. They both repeatedly speak of being in communication, having a good relationship, and being like family. So, nothing is "obvious". From their perspective, let the media stew.

Everybody's career does come to an end. But, if Manning's career is not over, he's the surest bet to get a team to a super bowl. That's the primary reason so many don't want to see him in another uniform. It's kind of a selfish attitude. I want the Colts to run at the super bowl next year and if PM is healthy give him a defense and running game and go for it.

  8. As long as we're all postulating and pontificating...

I've seen Prima Donna's and Reggie is not one of them. It's too early for the Colts to be contacting players. Their contracts don't even expire for a month.

I predict the Colts re-sign Reggie to 3 or 4 year 8 mil/yr. Just look at whom he outperformed last year without a significant QB. 75 receptions and just shy of 1000 yards. He's never been a speedster. He's a quintessential route runner. His hands and durability is as good as it gets. He's one of the best of the free agents. The Colts need a speedster opposite him to force double teams. Garcon? Ah'm not sure. There are a lot of good wide out FA's this year. The Colts should capitalize.

  9. Just wondering..... I LOVE Peyton Manning! Just wondering why Irsey is such a heavey in all this? I mean he paid the guy SEVERAL million to NOT play this year. Seems tro me Peyton might consider re- negotiating the bonus given Irsey's honor in paying him for this last year.

No one(unless it's some individual poster) is making Jim Irsay the "heavy" in this. Actually, both Peyton and Irsay have held quite a professional line given the huge rumors floating every day among so many persons. They've both been very clear that they respect and trust each other. They view each other as family. They have a close relationship and communicate often. They both recognize they will be able to work out this situation to the best for all when they sit down and discuss it.

It's only the media persons that speculate that have created all the controversy.

  10. I dont get it. The biggest name in Football comes to you for an exclusive interview, and now you throw him under the best. What is wrong with this dude. Just, talking to Peyton gets his face on ESPN a few times now. I hope everyone in Indy sports shuts their door to this guy. I live in Fort Wayne, so I dont have to read this guys..um.."stuff". If did live around Indy I would be canceling my subscription. He has been nothing but a jerk though all this.

And lets not forget, Peyton was calling him back to answer questions about Eli coming to town in response to a message left by Kravitz. I cancelled my Star subscription last year after taking it for 30 years. They call about once every couple weeks and I remind them not until Kravitz is gone.

  11. PM is one to be counted on the one hand. He has taken extreme measures since day one in the NFL to protect his longevity. Without the recent surgeries, I believe his arm strength would have lasted another five years. With successful nerve regeneration that could still be the case.

But let there be no doubt. This is the best opportunity to prepare for future after Manning.

That being said IF(& please note the IF) the arm strength returns, PM is still the surest quickest path to the super bowl.

To retire a Colt, Peyton must be cut, and a new contract that allows for both him and a #1 pick under the cap.

  12. I'm so proud that Indy did such a good job. I'm glad we had it here. I'm shocked from what I"m hearing about the Capital Improvement board losing $810,000 and still owing the state $4 mil for security which will be able to be paid with the $4mil rebate we get from the NFL.

I'd sure like to see a full accounting published of the city & state revenues and costs. Briefly from the news tonight I learned that the NFL got all the revenue from inside the stadium and were exempt from paying any taxes. There were other costs that the NFL were exempt from paying also.

We pay a huge sum to the NFL to host the event. We supply 8000 volunteers. We contribute 2% of all out eat and drink 365 days a year. Many businesses within the city saw no financial benefit from the event and some lost money. The city and state will have to wait a month to see what bump in tax revenue accrues from the non-NFL payers. News organizations trumpet the real benefit to the community will be in the other events that will come to Indy as a result of a successful super bowl. Maybe. Unless they strike deals to keep all the money too.

Again, I'm so proud of Indy and can't imagine how it could have been better, but I'm not sure we can afford to have another one.

  13. That may be the case. However, if you look at the state of the current situation and the current salary cap they are looking at in 2012.....the current contract, plus a #1 pick at QB, and a #3 QB will equate to about 18% of the total team cap. That's not so bad.

However, if you factor in the possibility that PM is paid his option bonus and retires without playing in 2012....that will be cap suicide....32% of the total team cap taken up by one player who will not play pretty much says it all. The franchise will be set back at least for 2 years.

That is why many people think that the most reasonable way forward is to release PM before the option bonus is due if he is not back at 100%, thereby "only" hitting the cap at $10.4MM. Whether the Colts will then be successful in negotiating another contract with PM is yet to be known.

I'd even go as far to venture that the Colts have to avoid the 28mil payout even if PM is 100%. The one element not planned for by JI & PM was gettin the #1 overall pick. Retaining a 100% PM with a #1 pick or a slew of new talent via trade of the #1 pick only benefits the colts and PM by scrapping the 28 mil. A healthy PM and JI work out the cap puzzle to the benefit of the colts for years to come may actually mean the Colts could have their cake(PM) and eat it too (QB outside PM remaining time). That would be one of the slickest moves pulled off by an owner in history.

Peyton has to be cut to be kept.

  14. Yes, the $10.4MM hit is for 2012 only. And that is the sticking point. If you want to negotiate a deal with PM for lower overall contract value, because of the cap hits, you must do so with this $10.4 already over your head. Keep in mind, every million dollars you give to PM that hits the 2012 cap, is a million dollars that you cannot spend on FAs, in what the owner of the team has already termed a rebuilding year.

Without knowing all the exact figures, I'd assume the Colts need to keep the PM 2012 cap hit at 17mil or lower. I've heard some estimates that signing a 1st overall draft pick(Luck) would probably hit the cap for around 4mil. This seems low to me. Any insight there? In any case 25mil or less in the QB position seems paramount. Another question for ya frog. After a PM release, would there be any strategy to the timing of signing a new 2012 contract for PM as to increasing the value of the #1 draft pick?

  15. I apologize if I'm repeating what's already been said, but I've been working day and night since Tuesday on Super Bowl activities and completely exhausted now that the game is over. I've had several days to digest the past few weeks and recent interviews and info. The Manning situation seems to boil down to the following:

    1) Manning must regenerate enough am strength to be able to throw the ball as he has done in the past. Neck injury is not an issue.

    2) Between 2/7 - 3/8 the Colts must exercise the option to commit PM to the last four years of his contract by paying him 28mil.

    3) If the Colts let the contract expire without exercising the option they must pay PM 28 mil on 3/11 for not exercising the option. The Colts could then place the Franchise tag on PM and receive compensation from any team that signs him as an unrestricted FA. So, option #3 isn't really an option at all!

    4) If the Colts exercise the option with the 28 mil then the next year salary cap hit is 32-35 mil depending on whose number you can believe. With the Colts 2012 cap being estimated at 121mil this isn't feasible for a team that needs to lock in a future QB. Unless, there is some grand plan that can be used in the next few years given that PM would play that long.

    5) The Colts release(cut) PM prior to 3/8. This scraps the 28 mil altogether as well as the next four years of the 5 yr contract. The colts can't use the Franchise tag and PM is free to negotiate with any team and no compensation coming back to the Colts.

    6) PM said yesterday he would accept a performance only contract.

    7) The only way I see PM being a Colt is for him to be released. Negotiate a new contract with Irsay after the new season starts on 3/13 that adds very little to the first couple of years of the salary cap. His cap hit would start the 2012 season around 10mil. and go up with the new contract. The team salary caps greatly expand in the 2014 season. This contract could be delayed for a period of time and possibly made contingent on his achieving the necessary health. This allows the colts to go into the april draft and either lock in Luck(not RG3) or accept a grand offer from some team ready to pay a kings ransom for this years number one pick. That ransom would have to allow an avenue to gain a QB yet in this draft or the next.

    8) Workout the rest of the puzzle with the other FAs' and draft picks to have an adequate defense and running game and the Colts make a run at the 2013 Super Bowl next season.

I leave it to you to predict the future from there.

The worst of all worlds would be for PM to go to another team and play in the Super Bowl next year while the colts languish in mediocrity developing a new team. If anything goes wrong in those 3-5 rebuilding years then it would be start over again. That's what happened to the Colts between 1978 and 1998. It was a long twenty years.

  16. Quoting JWilli69.... Nobody is going to really miss you, your not a team fan, your a fan of the best player that has come along in possibly ever. Just because the team doesn't make the choice you would (with their money) doesn't mean the guy picked next wouldn't become the next icon, bet we would see you jump back on the wagon if that occured, right? yep!! end of quote

JWilli, I whole heartedly understand why you say what you say. Several have flamed me for this attitude. I reply, not to change anyones opinion nor to defend my statement, but simply to make sure I've been interpreted correctly. The one commonality among the flamers has been to present their thoughts as they were mine. This is where they have missed the mark.

The OP was a hypothetical. Everyone assumes that if I quit being a Colts fan it would be to root for Peyton Manning. That is also false. If he wound up playing for another team I wouldn't root for PM cause I wouldn't be a fan of that team. I would quit being a Colt fan because I would regard the decision to let Peyton play for another team to be another in a long line of poor decisions made by the Colts since 1970 when Bob Irsay began writing the book on how to destroy a franchis. I feared the same when Bob turned the reins over to Jim.

So far, Jim has been the quintessential owner. He's always followed sound decision making. The best one was stepping out of the day to day decisions that seemed to always plague his father. He been true to that for 13 years. Recent changes put him at another crossroads. Does he now feel ready to involve himself in the day-to-day such as other owners? I think that could be disastrous for the Colts franchise depending on just how much he has learned.

The fact still remains that the QB position is the most important on a team going to the super bowl. A healthy Peyton Manning with an adequate defense and running game is the quickest path to that end. To let a healthy Peyton Manning take another team to the super bowl would be the last straw of bad decisions.

After seeing the Irsay interview with Hannah Storm, the last element I've been looking for in the Jim Irsay question was answered for me. He demonstrated a deep knowledge of the difference's between himself and his father. He actually acknowledged the faults of his father and his desire to not follow in his footsteps. By relating the story of how his father fired Ted Marchibroda at halftime(a most shocking display at the time) when Jim was 16yo and Jim's speech on the team bus following showed me that Jim was on the right track. As a fan, I fully support what he is doing with the Colts.

I believe Peyton and Jim trust each other enough they will be able to do whatever it takes to make the situation work out in the best way possible. I don't think that puts PM in another teams jersey.
