Teams missed it with Puca too, unless you think his success is all because of McVay and Stafford.  IDK, seems like a stretch to me.

I think we can give Stafford a little bit of credit. He's a fantastic QB. I think the QB-WR relationship is far more complex than many give credit. They both need each other to do the job well in order for the other to succeed.

Johnson, Kupp, Nacua. All 1,000 yard receivers. All played with Stafford. He knows how to get his star receivers the ball and put them into a position to succeed (YAC). It's why I was really wanting him to come to Indy years ago.

Do you mean meddling?  Sure, I mean its reported that Arthur Blank screwed his GM by wanting Penix.  Tough break for the new GM, and it makes it harder for Blanc to evaluate him I'd think.  I hope the new guy doesn't get blamed for stuff that was out of his control.

I have to say, I do agree that a lot of GMs are on a similar level as far as skill and talent. That's how they got to where they are.

Some will be more inexperienced than others, some are more aggressive while others are passive. I think there are a lot of varying philosophies on running an NFL team compared to running a normal business.

I don't think everyone's board is the same. I'm sure there are some overlap especially at the top. But in the middle I would imagine it's far more varied. There's only so many scouts, so many days and hours, and thousands of players to evaluate. They aren't going to catch them all.

But, I will say there is always going to be some luck and chance probability involved when it comes to the draft. That's just a truth in life itself.

No.  But once they have the years of experience and system training to reach that level, I think they are more interchangeable with each other than what most folks think.  Certainly their success or failure is based more on random things out of their control than what they get praised or blamed for.  JMO.

Would you go as far to say that ownership can be the main wildcard for teams deviating from expectations?

I don't understand this, so please explain.

This is how I see it based upon what we know.

By accounts, Purdy has played better than Jimmy G.  If you believe the training camp stories where the players were telling media and the coaches that Purdy was the real deal when he got a chance to play in TC, Purdy was good right away and need little actual development by NFL coaches.   If Lynch knew this would happen, why did he wait until the very last pick of the drat to select Purdy?  To say it wasn't luck, but rather skill and knowledge, you'd have to believe that...going into the draft... Lynch knew Purdy would be good (or else why pick him), and also knew that not one other team thought he would be good, so he knew he could just wait until pick 250..

He knew the other GMs thought Purdy would not even be even good right away, but not even a good enough prospect to take a flyer on him and snipe him at pick 249?  Sure, he benefits from Shanahan's system, but my goodness, his success is not THAT system dependent that some team would not have selected him in round 4, 5, 6, 7. with all of the comp picks added on as merely a prospect.  They all ignored Purdy.

How do folks hold the GM player evaluation process in such high regard when we all know that GMs miss.  Both with picking busts and missing good players.  Why is pointing that out a negative?  We all know it.  And why does Ballard deserve to be shielded from it?

Am I understanding you correctly that you feel all GMs are not really that valuable?

That essentially anyone can do the job?

I thought it was a good interview but kind of odd regarding his response to AD. He said he got lucky with the AD pick but yet he traded back and he was still sitting there for them to pick at 52. He must have felt comfortable that he was still going to be there at 52  if he was  indeed their  pick in the 2nd. Makes one wonder  how come teams passed on this guy and if the Colts wouldn't have pulled the trigger how far would he have fallen? Love the pick with all that being said. I see this guy measurables and the game tape and he could be elite. I would contend that if his production would have matched his skill  set, you would have been talking about his guy in the same conversation with Nabors and Harrison. The tape is outstanding and he is an impressive athlete.  His post draft interviews were interesting in terms of his personality.

His route running tape is eye opening for sure.

On paper it sure seems like they hit a home run on this draft.

I thought for sure they were going to take a CB, so I'm stoked they got the (what many are saying) was the best/most complete pass rusher in the draft. Lord knows Colts need a pass rush.

CB is still a need, so here's hoping they get a vet presence. Or at least a vet safety.

Latu with that relentless motor will eventually wear down a QB. Even if they don't get home every time, just the presence alone from this front 4 should be something.

  7. What an awesome behind the scenes look. I just love Charlie Partridge, so happy he's on our staff. He's going to be such an influence for Latu, I'm telling you guys.

And Mitchell is going to do well working and learning from Reggie and Michael Pittman. Those two know how to bring the attitude to the field and turn it into fuel and efficiency.

A little sad to not see Jim there. I know it must be killing him to not be with his beloved team. The daughters seem very genuine and eager to step into leadership though.

Yeah, quite the opposite. In this case, Ballard went out of his way to defend AD publicly. I have little doubt that the off field concerns played a part in AD being the 10th WR to be drafted, when he's probably the 4th or 5th most talented prospect in the class (IMO). But it does the Colts no good for Ballard to acknowledge that in the presser.

Instead, you call out everyone who wondered about AD's character, and you talk about how lucky you are that he was still available when you were on the clock (even though you traded back instead of drafting him yourself). To me, it's clearly coachspeak.

That's what I was saying. Ballard wasn't going to say anything other than defending his choices and defending his new players. To me, coachspeak and GM speak is pretty similar.

Take a look at the Falcons GM's pressers.

So the 'we got lucky' thing kind of misses me. If Cooper DeJean or Jackson Powers-Johnson lasted until the Colts pick, they probably would have said 'we got lucky,' just like they did about AD. It's just the way the draft works. You can't get everybody you like. If they had stayed at #46 and taken AD, I might take the 'we got lucky' comment more seriously.

In reality all GMs do this. It's just how it is when working with the press. The last thing they want to do is paint their shiny new prospect in the negative. So it's easy to sit there on the mic and say "we really like this guy, we're really lucky he fell to us". And psychologically? It usually works.

I know you're probably kidding, but the complaints would go away very quickly if we signed a veteran. In this case, it's somewhat likely Ballard will do something about it and appease the fanbase.

The one part that I disagree with is appeasing the fanbase. I don't think he honestly cares about our opinions. Specifically on this website which represents a tiny fraction minority of the fans. If he thinks the corner room is fine (which it seems like he does) then we may find that who we have is who we get.

Which is why I think this will be a common complaint throughout the season.

Zack Wilson was a bust in NY because he can't grasp even the basic fundamentals of the QB position. Denver is stuck in reverse.

He had one good season and a pro-day throwing session and punked the Jets into thinking he was a 1st round level QB. Can't even make basic NFL reads.

I don’t know why, but for some reason every year this post is always entertaining. What number will each player wear? I personally hope that Mitchell wears 17 my favorite number. I have a blank jersey with 17 on it. I would love to put Mitchell on the back of it.

Oh the notion is absolutely absurd, but that's the offseason for you.

  13. Broncos are reaching badly. This might be, as of right now, the worst QB room in the league:

    Jarrett Stidham is QB1...

    Wilson is QB2...

    Bo Nix is QB3...

    DiNucci is QB4...

Broncos might be walking into next season with another top 10 pick. Call me a hater, but I don't think Sean Payton is as much of a genius as he thinks he is.

So many NFL GMs just aren’t good and there’s others that keep getting lucky cough Eagles lol.

The Eagles and Chiefs are probably lucky because of those bad GMs and franchises who are so desperate. Looking at the Browns who basically footed the bill to rebuilt the Texans all so they could watch backup QBs outperform the guy they gave up so much for…

1000 percent!    Richardson is the key.  I’ve said repeatedly that, at quarterback, there’s no shortcut for experience.  That AR has to okay and be allowed to make his mistakes.

There will be games where the Colts trail by 4 with time winding down.  The Colts must get a touchdown.  AR will make a throw into the end zone that will get picked off.  ALL QBs do this.  And certainly a QB with as little experience as Richardson has.

And no doubt fans here who have no patience will pronounce they’ve seen enough to know that Richardson is not the guy.  He’s never going to make it.  You can easily predict today who will say that 5-8 months from now.   This fan base has to be patient with AR.

    Absolutely.

There will a few games where he does something absolutely jaw dropping that leads to a win, and then there will be several games where he will be responsible for a loss. Just how it goes. What will matter most is improvement game after game.

Watching most the draft call videos you can really see a good connection between Shane and Ballard. I think Shane is changing how Ballard looks at certain type of players and he truly seems excited about the picks

I think Shane is more of a football junkie compared to what Ballard has had in the past. Shane eats and breathes football.
