  1. I think one of the riskiest things that can happen is if we draft Chubb at 3 (wasting any chance of extra picks) AND stick with a 3-4 defense (Flus has worked with/under both 4-3 and 3-4 and he might wanna keep things the same?). That is likely taking Chubb and putting him in a situation that severely limits his ceiling and abilities.

Chubb in a 4-3 is >>> Chubb in a 3-4. Important distinction there that we might wanna think about. A 4-3 defense isn't guaranteed!

    Wait,

So Holder went down to NE to do an article on McDaniels, and never talked to McDaniels directly.

Don't know if you are joking or not. But you do realize that the chances of getting McDaniels to talk about his future when they are in the middle of a potential Super Bowl run is next to nothing? Not to mention, he is a PATRIOT under BB which makes it even more likely. The article mentioned how it was hard to get players to talk about it, let alone McDaniels....

  3. Doyle is probably not top 5 TE material, AND THAT IS OK, but he is for sure top 10 TE in the league and we have him at a pretty cheap price compared to the others. To sign Graham, it would take 10+ mill/yr easy and I am just not willing to do that when we already have a TE1 on the team! He is very dependable and that is going to be perfect in a short/intermediate passing game with quick strikes. And not to mention Swoope (assuming he comes back healthy and plays) is waiting in the wings. He will provide McDaniels to dial up a lot of different things.

We are fine where we are right now. Let's use the 10 mill on an ILB, both Melvin + Desir, or on a top tier guard.

I rate him highly.    Certainly higher than ESPN has him which is 6th out of the top 9 CB's who are in the top-50.

That's based the following...     2 of the 5 ahead of him,  Breeland and Fuller I believe are zone corners.    And Colvin is a nickle slot guy and we have Hairston.      That leaves Johnson, who is first overall,  and has not performed as well under the tag the last two years and will want a fortune.    The other corner ahead of him is NE's Mitchell Butler,  who I like, but he's sub-6'.    He's 5'10 or 5'11 and I'm personally partial to taller corners, which fits Melvin.

So I value him highly....    I think he's our best corner.     Now,  I don't expect him to remain our top corner.   I think Quincy Wilson will pass him a in a year or so.     I think Wilson is really good.    But I like having two top corners,  not one.   And if both are tall -- so much the better!     I'd love to have a pair of Wilson and Melvin,  with Desir the back-up and Hairston in the slot.   When it comes to corners,  I'm greedy.     So, if Ballard can find another sleeper in either FA or the draft,  that's always fine with me.

I agree. I think keeping Melvin will go a long ways to shore up our improving defense next year. Man can be a staple CB1 for a couple of years at this rate. He is very motivated to prove everyone wrong. Let's pay the man ~8 for three years and let him play. He is going to be cheaper than any other corner out there that is better than him or even close to his skill level. He is more likely to give us a hometown discount, however small it might be.

I’m glad you’re not negotiating the deal. Guaranteed 16 million? No thanks.

Brah you are delusion to think that 16 mill is too high for an above average corner coming out of a top 10 CB performance while playing on a cheap contract and still somewhat young. Man is going to command up to 10 mill/year regardless. The only way to grab him and keep him in Indy is if we add a little guaranteed so he doesn't worry about job security and we get an above-average corner (at worst) for decent money but the upside of a top 5 guy for the next couple of years. That man is motivated, I'm serious.

It's not high too high a price at all if another team wants to move up too.

Who else you thinking about moving up to the 3?

Cleveland is going up for Barkley and NOT one of the QBs (probably Allen) which other teams like DEN and NJ need and are desperate for. We would take that deal before one with Cleveland. We drop a little more down (get Nelson a mauler, or Minkah a versatile guy) AND grab a haul with a future 1st and a 2nd atleast from this draft. That would set up nicely this draft and next AND we still get a above-average starter (or All-Pro in Nelson's case).

Quality might be greater than Quantity in most cases, but in this case we need Quantity to shore up the entire team talent level, we need more picks for that.

With this I’m taking too account the rumored coaching changes and us switching to a 4-3.

    FA

    Sign: Justin Pugh, OG

    Sign: Corey Lattimore, WR

    Sign: Trumaine Johnson, CB

    Draft:

*Indy trades number 3 overall pick to the Cleveland for their number 4 and number 35 that they got from Houston. Cleveland takes Barkley *

    R1: Bradley Chubb, DE

    R2: Will Hernandez, OG

    R2: Leighton Vander Esch, ILB

    R3: Jerome Baker, ILB

    R4: Royce Freeman, RB

    R5: Adam Breneman, TE

    R6: Zachary Crabtree, OT

    R7: Quenton Meeks, CB

The Colts are able to fix the OL by adding two quality guards. RT will figure itself out, but better playcalling should help.

They key of switching to the 4-3 will be the draft. We get Chubb and now with Basham you have future bookends at DE and depth behind Sheard and Simon. And our ILBs have no speed or athleticism. Leighton is the starter at MLB as he is athletic and has amazing instincts. Baker is super athletic and can play the Will OLB role. He’s a moveable piece. Freeman is the type of back that McDaniels can get creative with. He can run inside, out, and catch. Breneman will give MD a TE to pair with Doyle to create mismatches with. The rest of the players are depth.

Isn't the 35 a little high of price for moving up one spot, also why would they move up one spot to get Barkley? I would think we get a 3rd and a 5th or a 3rd and a 4th.

  8. Offer the man a 4 year, 32 million contract but make the first two years guaranteed and the rest essentially a team-option. That way, man gets paid and there is a potential for him to stick around for 4 years and the team gets flexibility after a couple of years.

Anything more would be too much.

It's possible Hitchens(from the Cowboys) could come here. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple NE or NE-like players came here. I think the Colts might target a big TE like Gronk. There's one in the draft(forgot his name) that would fit perfectly, or maybe Jimmy Graham, if the Colts don't want to draft one.

I think getting a TE in the FA like Jimmy Graham would be a waste of resources at a position where we don't need the upgrade as much as others. That money (which would be pretty significant considering Jimmy Graham has been balling out this season) would be better used on another valuable position hard to get a starter in the draft where we don't have as much depth. Like ILB or Guard or WR. We have Doyle, a top 5 TE and sure-handed guy who will excel with McDaniels dink-and-dunk-till-the-D-gets-tired offense. Not to mention Swoope coming back healthy will be a pretty high-upside player.

  10. Keep in mind that Ballard will still retain (as far as we know this hasn't and won't change) the final say and control in deciding who to target, how much to offer, etc. Obviously Ballard is all about collaboration and will probably consult with McDaniels a good amount but I don't see this being an all out attack for ex-Patriots even though some do appear to be a good fit.

    Tentative offensive free agency list:

Oline: 1, even 2 premier, definite starter level guys and maybe one or two depth guys

RB to complement Mack: Lewis, Crowell (I think Crowell would do good behind an improved offensive line), etc

WR: We need like 2. A slot guy that would fit what McDaniels wants and a big guy to pair up with TY. One is going to be expensive and the other one should be a bargain buy. (if we plan on drafting a WR, ideally we go for the big guy in the draft and sign an experienced slot receiver as its a harder role being a possession receiver)

    Tentative defensive free agency list:

LB, LB, LB: We are probably going to switch to a 4-3 and nobody knows how Mingo, Simon, and our current stable of terrible LBs will fit. I say we go out and grab atleast one legit MLB, ILB type guy that can cover, hit, and rush the passer. Sign an outside 4-3 LB to push Simon for starting role cause I don't trust Simon as a strong-side 4-3 LB yet. We can also draft a good LB in the 2nd or 3rd

DL: we are probably good on this end considering a switch to 4-3 would involve Hankins as a starter, Sheard as a DE, and Henry Anderson as a DT or DE depending on the down. If we grab Chubb, that would be the other DE and we are set. Though we should probably sign a young upside depth guy or two to push Woods and Hunt (neither of which are guaranteed good in a 4-3).

CB: Sign a decent CB plus Resign Melvin or Desir . If Melvin can be had for less than 8 a year, get him a nice 3 year, 8m/yr contract. Otherwise let him go. Bring back Desir cheap as a back-up option in case Melvin falls through (which it probably will). Quincy Wilson, Desir, Hairston is a solid CB corp. We should shore up depth though through the draft and grab some high upside developmental guys.

Safety: WE GOOD HERE FELLAS - Fairley, Geathers, Hooker. Let Butler go and we can probs sign a depth guy in the FA or the draft.

  11. Doyel has really started to * me off this past year and his most recent article about McDaniels is just another great reason to hate him. While he does have a role as the "devils-advocate" or the "other side" type personality, he definitely takes it WAY too far at times, including this most recent work.

The thing that I believe is LOGIC. McDaniels had a terrible time at Denver, no doubt about it. We know it, the league knows it, the players in our locker room have heard it, and HE KNOWS IT. He knows that in all likelihood, this could be his last head coach gig. Whether that goes for 4 years and he ends up being fired or that he has a 10+ year career in Indy with multiple Super Bowl rings, is sorta up to him and how he approaches the job. He knows that if he doesn't clean up some of the negative points from his last gig (arrogance, punk-like attitude, power-hungry, etc), he won't survive here long with Ballard. It is in his best self-interest to change and he seems like he knows it considering how he has talked about his Denver experiences PUBLICLY. And on top of everything, he doesn't have to be a GM as well. He only has to worry about coaching.

Also one last thing, I believe completely in Ballard. I don't think Ballard can be easily fooled by a Josh McDaniels "faking" his change in attitude/approach to coaching.

I think the chance of McDaniels being an above-average coach (to potentially a great hire) is much higher than him being a bust as Doyel seems to think. Just my two cents.

Doyel  obviously doesn’t buy it according to his article yesterday. He’s in the once a punk, always a punk school. He’s probably right about McDaniels but if being beloved was important, then Pagano would be a Hall of Fame coach — and guys like Lombardi, Belichick and Noll would have been failures.

  13. Just my opinion but I think the chances of Frank Gore coming back (while already not likely) took a hit with McDaniels coming on. I can see him trying to find another dynamic young or youngish RB to pair up with Mack (a FA guy like Deion Lewis, Isaiah Crowell, or a high upside 2n,3rd, or 4th rd bruiser RB from the draft). I think we see a 2 RB "committee" next year as McDaniels offenses are known to attack in multiple ways from the running back position (see white, blount, lewis, bulkhead).

That being said, my personal feelings are that I just don't see much dynamic play with Frank Gore anymore. When he is in the game, he is essentially guaranteed to only be doing two things: pass-protect or running it inside. I prefer a more young guy that McDaniels can mold and pair up perfectly with Mack (could even start playing the "hot hand" type approach).

I doubt she was "hacked" and it was added. The comments and (her replies too?) seemed like it was a done deal and many people seemed confident in their congratulations.

She probably didn't realize it would blow up like this lol. Probably just a mistake (one that her husband will probably have to answer to from Cowboys, Colts, and/or McDaniels lolol).

  15. Also, keep in mind this guys: If in a week or two, McDaniels does "pull out" and back down from what appears to be a handshake agreement, then he would be committing career-suicide basically and would never be trusted again in the NFL.

This is VERY different than a Frank Gore - Eagles situation. Players on the open market are a completely different story. In that situation, one is right to assume that they don't have anything done till the pen hits the paper and there is ink.

A small look at the opportunity with NYJ given McDaniels as HC, and Richard as DC

    Possible trade 3 for 6, 37 and 49 or 103:

    6: Bradley Chubb DE

    36: Kolton Miller OT

    37: Rashaan Evans ILB

    *49: Nick Chubb RB

    67: Will Hernandez OG

    100: JC Jackson CB

    *103: Bo Scarbrough RB

    Chubb/Anderson/Hankins/Sheard on the 4-3 DL

    Evans/Bostic/FA (Whitehead?) as 4-3 OLBs

    FA(Gaines?)/Melivn/Wilson/Jackson/Desir

    Hooker/Gaethers/Farley as DBs

    Costonzo/FA(Norwell?)/Kelly/Hernandez/Miller on the OL

Hilton/FA(Robinson?)/Moncrief or another FA/Rogers as WR core

Luck with FA(Lewis?)/Mack/Scarbrough/Micheal in the backfield

Not bad. I like this option, especially if Saqoun is off the board....

Our Defensive Coordinator is most likely to be Matt Eberflus, and not Kris Richard. Though you are right about it likely being a 4-3 next year.

  17. MAN OH MAN I AM EXCITED.......

Now with the emotions out of the way (emotions built up after 5+ years of Pagano...), lets get down to my thoughts on the serious stuff:

    Offense (LIT):

Offensive Coordinator: Jake Peetz - great young up and comer who has worked with a bunch of good coaches from an early age (Saban, Gruden, Chow <- one of the best QB coaches of all time). Won't get poached away anytime soon and McDaniels can mold him in any way he pleases as he won't have the main play-calling duties anyways. Excited to see how he can work closely with Luck as well. He worked with Carr.

Play-caller: McDaniels, offensive % is about to be lit in Indy starting next year assuming Luck comes back healthy. Expect short passing, screens, "taking what the defense gives you," "hit them deep with TY once the defense gets tired of giving up 5-10 yards every play." Should help cover up our OLine's deficiencies and help Luck stay upright and healthy and maybe even prolong his career.

    Defense (We'll have to see):

Defensive Coordinator: "Coach Flus" from Dallas - considered one of the up and coming coaching talents on the defensive side of the ball. Enough to be considered one of the most priority "free-agents" for dallas considering his contract expires after the Super Bowl. If, as expected, we land him, then expect a good defensive coach who has lots of experience working with linebackers (think Sean Lee). You can bet your butt that there is going to be a complete overhaul of our linebacker corp this offseason. No more of the 2 down thumpers, I think we'll see movement in free agency for a veteran plus one top guy in the draft to mold. Likely switch to 4-3 defense means less middle linebackers to worry about. Sheard fits in well at one of the defensive end spots and Simon is athletic enough to play WLB in a 4-3. Draft Chubb and you got a natural 4-3 DE at the other end. Hankins is already a good fit for the 4-3 and Woods is probably good enough to fit in as well. Build from the trenches and develop our young secondary.

Future is optimistic fellas. Last thing on the menu? Getting luck back healthy. Hopefully in 10 years we can look back and see this as one of the most pivotal off-seasons in our franchise's history. #InBallardWeTrust #BDB #TrustTheBinder #BuildTheRealMonster.

  18. I think we can all agree to one thing on this forum at this point: Nothing would be better than the Steelers (for some reason I don't hate them as much as most people on this forum) coming back to beat the Jags and then rolling into NE and beating the Patriots next week so that we can hire a coach and get all these "rumors" "its been reported" shenanigans done with.

That being said, McDaniels at HC/OC (his OC will essentially be a placeholder considering McDanny will be calling plays) and Coach Flus at DC sounds hella appealing of a coaching staff at this stage. Imagine that plus 1 more year of a Ballard offseason. Regardless of how you feel about McDaniels, it is hard to deny that this is our best scenario at this point and we should all be rooting for this.

  19. Also keep in mind, I heard this somewhere somewhat official, is that Nagy would have been one of the few candidates where their current DC could be kept and wouldn't have been changed. Also, Nagy makes much more sense for Trubisky considering all the college Run/Pass option plays he called with Alex Smith in KC when compared to Josh McDaniels who has a whole veteran NFL QB Patriots offensive system in place with Tom Brady for many years which would not be as easy or even right for Trubisky.

What is the most likely scenario is that Nagy was clearly the first pick (and potentially only decent one) for the Bears and they had basically made the decision to offer it to him before he even stepped in for the interview. Keep in mind that the current GM's lifeline is basically Trubisky after what happened last year with Glennon and the draft. If Trubisky succeeds, then so does the GM. Nagy just makes that more possible all while not having to change defensive coordinators or a system that has been set up for a few years now.

  20. The thing that I am interested in for this upcoming offseason is how Ballard works with ~90 million in cap space. Is he gonna go out there hunting for one or two top-end free agents (hopefully in the OLine department or WR department) or is he gonna spread the wealth around moneyball-style as he did this past offseason? Simon and Sheard were fantastic signings and the rest were good for depth and increasing our overall talent and upside. I hope he devotes like ~30 million to big signings (1-2 offensive lineman PLEASE) and the rest money-ball.

And yea, the man can draft and evaluate talent. IN BALLARD WE TRUST

  21. 25 minutes ago, Turftoe said:

I agree with the subject of this thread.  My question is: who will select the coordinators and position coaches?  Will a new coach have full control, will it be a cooperative thing with Ballard, or (heaven forbid) will Ballard be the one to hire them?

I highly doubt it would be a situation where Ballard hires them by himself. He hasn't shown any of that yet in player-personel decisions, etc. He has constantly talked about working closely with the HC to make sure there is something that they agree on and work on moving forward. That being said, I also don't think its completely hands off. It probably will be something like: HC hires coordinators but Ballard makes his points and advice.

  22. Guys, I think we are seriously overthinking a very important detail:

With a franchise QB, a HC's job becomes 2X easier and in the end is more likely to look good and have favorable opinions regardless of his actual job.

Look at Pagano! Even with his terrible game-management, lack of in-game adjustments, and other terrible HC qualities, he still somehow managed to win A LOT of games with Luck. The mistake that we need to make sure that we DON'T make is to hire a full-on risk like we did with Pagano. There were rumors prior to Pagano's hire that he wasn't the best candidate for HC at the time and obviously now we know about the Pagano/Grigson dynamic.

My take on all this HC stuff: As long as we hire somebody that can be an effective game-manager, make in-game adjustments, and can assemble a quality staff, we should be fine as long as we have Luck coming back healthy (which I know isn't even guaranteed). I'd rather take a safer option than go all out on a risky move that could back-fire just as easily as it did with Pagano. I think that is partially the reason why Irsay keeps on insisting that we get a former-head coach because chances are, if those former-head coaches had a franchise QB at this disposal, they would still probably be decent-to-good head coaches.

My picks for HC: Jim Schwartz or Toub (would be kinda like John Harbaugh and be sorta hands-off and let his coordinators take care of a lot of in-game responsibilities while he takes care of managing stuff).

I DONT want McDaniels because I think he is a risky hire (more so than Toub). There have been reports that players didn't like playing for him, that he butted heads a lot, etc. Toub on the other hand is a highly-respectable person who has led a top unit for the past decade almost.

  23. Is it just me or does Geathers always seem to be around the tackle?? I am liking what I am seeing so far from him in his attempt to get back to form. Certainly doesn't appear afraid of hard hitting, which is good considering it's his speciality. Looking forward to Geathers-Hooker combo next year (and hopefully many more years to come!!).

Also, Wilson ain't looking bad either!! Him and Hairston definitely appear to have a future with the team. Imagine if we can either draft the other CB or keep Melvin/Desir and get some depth than we are set with a young and high upside secondary!!
