    As many Colts fans are aware of, Robert Mathis just concluded his final year of his current contract with our beloved team. There has been support via Twitter, Facebook and message boards from fans wanting the Colts Organization to re-sign Mathis and give him a new, worthy contract. Let me break this down for you, our team NEEDS Robert Mathis. Our fans WANT Robert Mathis back. Robert Mathis more than deserves to stay in Indianapolis.
    Mathis was selected 138th overall in the NFL Draft, and the 18th overall Defensive End. Of those 17 DE’s taken ahead of Mathis, how does he measure up? We’ll just break down some numbers and find out.
    The highest Defensive End taken in the 2003 NFL Draft was Kevin Williams. He was selected 9th overall by the Minnesota Vikings and has remained with the Vikings since. Of his 9 years in the league, his career statistics per season are as follows: 44.88 tackles, 6.05 sacks, .78 forced fumbles. Let’s just add those numbers up and give him a rating of 51.71. Not too shabby. Next was Ty Warren, selected by the New England Patriots. He stayed with the Patriots until 2009 and then went to Denver in 2011. He did not have a team in 2010 and did not start a single game in 2011. So his overall stats would be: 53.29 tackles, 2.93 sacks, .57 forced fumbles with a rating of 56.79. Other defensive ends drafted this year are as follows with their career stats:
    3rd: Michael Haynes 20.33 tackles, 1.83 sacks, .67 forced fumbles = 22.83
    4th: Jerome McDougle 9.25 tackles, .75 sacks, .50 forced fumbles = 10.50
    5th: Calvin Pace 48.88 tackles, 4.33 sacks, 1.89 forced fumbles = 55.10
    6th: Tyler Brayton 34.33 tackles, 1.94 sacks, .56 forced fumbles = 36.83
    7th: Chris Kelsay 47.33 tackles, 3.39 sacks, 0.88 forced fumbles = 51.6
    8th: Osi Umenyiora 37.00 tackles, 7.67 sacks, 3.33 forced fumbles = 48.00
    9th: Dewayne White 29.00 tackles, 3.84 sacks, 1.57 forced fumbles = 34.41
    10th: Cory Redding 34.00 tackles, 2.83 sacks, 0.44 forced fumbles = 37.27
    11th: Kenny Peterson 16.71 tackles, 1.14 sacks, .57 forced fumbles = 18.42
    12th: Sam Williams 14.33 tackles, .11 sacks, .11 forced fumbles = 14.55
    13th: Andrew Williams 6 tackles, 1 sack, 0 forced fumbles = 7.00
    14th: Jarret Johnson 42.44 tackles, 2.22 sacks, 1.0 forced fumbles = 45.66
    15th: Bryant McNeal 0 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 forced fumbles = 0.00
    16th: Shurron Pierson 5.0 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 forced fumbles = 5.00
    17th: Jamall Green 0.5 tackles, 0.25 sacks, 0.0 forced fumbles = 0.75
    18th: Robert Mathis 43.89 tackles, 9.28 sacks, 4.33 forced fumbles = 57.50
    Based on these NFL career statistics, Robert Mathis should have been the first defensive end selected in the 2003 draft. His stats are higher than those of Calvin Pace and Osi Umenyiora. And to think that the Colts could possibly trade or release him this year! That would be an utter disaster for our defensive line. So please, Mr. Irsay, Mr. Grigson and the rest of the Colts organization, do not make the mistake of letting Mathis go!

    If I were the Colts GM, obviously I'd start be re-signing Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis. Wayne is still an able-bodied receiver (even though considered "old" by some) and still has the tenacity you see from young players. His ability to run routes, shake defenders, and be a playmaker is amazing. I'd hate to see us lose him like we did Harrison. As for Mathis, well I just don't think you get as great of numbers from Dwight Freeney unless you have Mathis to compliment him. Mathis equalizes the pressure from the other side so that QBs don't have any way out when being flushed out of the pocket. They are a two-man tandem that would be disastrous if split up. And now to our QB situation: I know most everyone wants to see us use the first round pick on Luck for obvious reasons, but maybe therein lies the problem. Its too obvious as a choice. The last QB with this much hype was Jamarcus Russell and look where that got the Raiders. Luck is a very Manning-esque QB; comfortable in the pocket, highly efficient on his throws, not much of a runner, intelligent on top of athletic. So say we draft him, then we get rid of Peyton (probably to the Redskins) and build the team around this young kid. Do we really think we're going to strike gold twice in the matter of 14 years? My thoughts are no. So case in point, why not go after a non-conventional QB that can completely revamp our offensive scheme and playbook? Why not do something that has NEVER been done in Indy, but could benefit the team? I say trade our 1st pick to the VIkings for their 1st, 2nd & 3rd round picks for this year, and their first pick for next year and let them draft Luck and we go after RGIII. He's completely different than what we've ever had, and with Peyton still there, he can work on his passing game. Say Manning is healthy, he plays most of the game, but we can throw RGIII in there for some wildcat style plays. Another thing I would try and revamp is our secondary. Don't get me wrong, Bethea is AMAZING (especially in Sunday's game when he STOOD UP Jones-Drew), but he can't do it by himself. We need some hard hitting, fast, quick thinking DBs & Safeties. Someone with Bob Sanders style, minus the injuries, that can help plug the holes so we can stop the run game. Just some of my thoughts:)

    With the upcoming draft, and the Colts having the #1 overall pick one thing comes to mind...the battle of the QB. The year was 1968, the Colts still in Baltimore and riding high on the shoulders of All-Star, MVP QB Johnny Unitas. This was the man who brought us back in the "Greatest Game Ever Played", our knight in shining armor. Cut to the final preseason game, and Unitas goes down suffering from an injury to his elbow. Not known at the time, Unitas would not ever be the same player again. The Colts use their backup QB, Earl Morrall, to finish up the season and he takes the team on a 13-1 ride, leaving many fans thinking, Johnny who? Morrall ends up being named All-Pro and receiving the MVP Award. Could this be happening? Has someone stepped up and taken over the reigns from Mr. Unitas? Say it ain't so! Unitas would eventually come back and take over the starting position, although without the spark he had before his injury. However, he did lead the Colts to a Super Bowl Victory over the Cowboys in Super Bowl V.
    Flash forward to 2012, Colts are looking at the first overall pick in the NFL Draft and lo and behold, there happens to be a very elite QB coming out of college by the name of Andrew Luck. Its said he is the most-hyped quarterback coming out of the Draft since John Elway. But wait, we have our very own elite QB in Peyton Manning, right? I mean, this guy brought us out of the loss of hope with our struggling Indianapolis team when he turned around a 3-13 season to go 13-3 the very next. The guy who brought us home the Lombardi Trophy! The main reason we have this beautiful new stadium. A possible big reason that the city of Indianapolis is hosting this year's Super Bowl!
    So speculating, what happens now. I want to see Manning in Blue next season. I want to see him sporting those same old horseshoes he's always had. If we draft Luck, where does that leave Manning. Will he stay, will he go. Will we be so lucky as to see another amazing starting QB/backup QB pairing?
    Ugh, its just too much to think about as an avid Colts fan, and I'm not still not on that "Luck Bandwagon." I just think it is too much of a good thing that we could walk into drafting another great QB in so little years. I guess only time will tell, and Peyton's health I would think has the most impact on what decision will be made. All I can hope is the right decision is made (and it doesn't turn into a Jeff George scenario all over again), we get back on our road to success, and blissfulness returns to Indy.
