  1. I totally understood the Nelson pick last night but would have loved Roquan Smith mostly due to the drop off at linebacker from round 1 to round 2 vs the drop off at guard. This draft isn't supposed to be strong at linebacker and the current group of linebackers on the Colts roster is not what you want to go into the season with. However, getting Darius Leonard in round 2 was huge, imo. Some might think that was a reach but he was by far the best linebacker prospect left going into today. I'm not sure he would have lasted until the Colts picked at the end of round 2 or into round 3. He is a perfect fit for their defense. I loved the Colts being able to get him.

Turey has all of the physical tools to be effective so it's up to the coaching staff and him to produce.

I thought Maurice Hurst would be a great fit for the defense too but it appears teams have concerns about his heart condition. If healthy he is a round 1 or 2 prospect. Lewis seems like he might give them something similar to Hurst.

When Chris Ballard was hired he said he believed in building the offensive and defensive lines. Pretty much every GM says that but they don't always follow through with it. Ballard is with this draft. The value wasn't there last year to do it but with the prospects in this draft and all of the extra picks the lines are getting built.

afraid thats his age.  his birthday is right before the season

I don't think that it his really his age. He is also listed at 6'9 which I don't think is accurate.

There was a Darius Leonard who played college basketball at Wake Forest a few years ago. He is 6'9 and probably around 27. I think the internet is somehow getting that Darius Leonard mixed up with the Darius Leonard the Colts drafted.

  3. Kemoko seems like a boom or bust type of player. Time will tell how he works out but he has a lot of talent.

One for sure...Ballard is proving he is serious about building this team around the offensive and defensive lines. Some GMs say it but they don't follow through on it. Ballard is certainly following through with it.

  4. I love picking Darius Leonard. He is a perfect linebacker for the defense and he is one of the few linebackers projected as a possible second round pick.

Smith seems more of a guard than a tackle at least based on most of what i've read. I'll be interested to see where Ballard/Reich view him playing. After taking Nelson in round 1 I would have preferred another defensive player but that's JMO. I hope Smith brings a similar nasty attitude that Nelson is projected to bring.

Double down at guard with Hernandez. The OL is not fixed yet but with Hernandez we would have one of the best Lines in the League

I like Hernandez as a prospect but no way do I want the Colts to take another interior offensive lineman today. They could stand to add a tackle but I don’t think that needs addressed this year. There will be lots of talent available today at positions they need to improve way more than guard.

  6. The Colts really need to add a talented linebacker. I'm not sure there is one that will be available in round 2 that is worth taking. Darius Lenoard maybe?

I think there should be some good DL and WR prospects available in round 2 and the Colts will be able to address those positions. DL like maybe Hurst, Green and WR such as Miller, Sutton.

  7. I'm not sure a pass rusher is as big of a need as some of us think. Or, I am not sure that Chris Ballard views it that way.

We were spoiled for so many years with two elite pass rushers in Freeney and Mathis. I'm not sure that Ballard is aiming to find two great rushers like they were. I think Ballard is looking to build depth.

I looked through the Bears and Colts status during the Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy/Jim Caldwell era for those franchises when they ran the same type of defense as the Colts are moving to now. I noticed something about both teams.

Most seasons Freeney/Mathis got the majority of the sacks for the Colts. Raheem Brock had a couple years where he got 5-6 but outside of that I don't think anyone else got over 5 outside of Freeney and Mathis.

The Bears typically had 4 players with 5-10 sacks. Mark Anderson had 12 one year and Julius Peppers had 11 each of the last two years of Lovie's time in Chicago. Chicago had more balance, in terms of getting sacks, compared to the Colts.

I think Ballard will look to get pass rush with balance/depth. That is not to say that he will turn down an elite rusher I just am not sure he views it as the only way they can have good pass rush.

There are some good prospects the Colts can get in rounds 2, 3, and maybe even 4 that can help with the rush. Not likely to find a Dwight Freeney but I don't think they need to.

  8. We all have our preferences on players/positions but whoever they take shouldn’t cause controversy. Personally, I prefer to get an impactful defensive player over Barkley (unlikely to be there at 6) or Nelson (likely available at 6) but if the Colts end up with one of those two I’ll be thrilled. The Colts need to add talent regardless of position. The 6th pick allows them to add it.

With the way the draft is expected to go I think the Colts are going to have their choice of a couple great prospects...prospects who check all the boxes you want for a top 10 pick. Not everyone is going to agree on who the Colts should select but hopefully we all agree that whoever it is will make an impact from the start.

Fast for his size --- yes.   But it's not clear he's fast enough for what we want to run.

I think the 3-tech that us made for this defense is..   Maurice Hurst of Michigan.   I hope he lasts until our picks in the 2nd round and I hope we take him....

Good call on Hurst. He would be a perfect addition to this defense.

He was sent home early from the combine due to some type of heart condition. Everything I have read says that he has been cleared. This could impact him being taken in the first round.

Loved Minkah at Alabama...... now scared of Minkah heading into the NFL due to the history of Alabama secondary players being busts when they enter the league

Only 2 I can say worked out in recent years are Landon & HaHa

I’d pass on Minkah if I was CB. I'd take Denzel & Josh Jackson before Minkah assuming he’d play corner for us. If he’d play safety I’d take Derwin

I should have specified that i'd put Minkah in that group assuming he would play safety.

I wouldn't complain about Derwin though either. Although I thought he had a big red flag, maybe around medicals, but I could be wrong on that.

I think he's going to find a way to get some extra picks out of this.  Just feels that way.  That trade back is probably going to happen. Just hoping we don't miss out on Edmunds, Smith, Chubb, or Nelson if still on the board.

I agree assuming Cleveland keeps 4 and Denver stays at 5 but doesn't draft a QB. The Colts could be in a great position to trade back again.

I'd put Minkah Fitzpatrick in that group as someone I wouldn't want to miss out on. At the end of the day i'd be thrilled with any of the 4 you listed or Fitzpatrick.

  12. Surprised by this.

Some think it is because of the switch to 4-3 but I don't believe it. Hankins can play in the 4-3. Plus, Ballard is the one who signed him last year. I believe, even though there is no way to prove it, that Ballard has wanted to switch to the 4-3 from the start. I think there is something else to this besides a scheme change.

  13. Colts need talent upgrade all over the roster and this trade gives them the flexibility to do it.

I still really want a difference maker for the front seven. I know you should get focused on position groups but I’m hoping the Colts take Edmunds at 6.

Im also thinking the Colts must not be as high on Chubb of Barkley. One could fall to 6 but if the Colts really wanted them they would stay at 3.

Some people on this board don’t know what a rebuild looks like. Never seen so many delusional people in my life. Even when Ballard does sign a FA they will still complain. Even when this team was losing games last year I saw roster improvements over the previous regime. The roster wasn’t ruined in a single year and if you want it built back right it’s going to take more than a year. I like Amazon and Netflix etc and instant satisfaction as much as the next guy but the NFL isn’t like that. Let’s give Ballard a chance to do his job.

    History is easily forgotten.

People expect a quick turnaround and to be at the top of the AFC South like they were in the 2000s. However, Bill Polian inherited Marshall Faulk, Tarik Glenn, Marvin Harrison, and drafted Peyton Manning in his first year in Indy. Ballard inherited an injured Andrew Luck and TY Hilton. Polian didn't build good teams by signing expensive free agents. He did it by building around great players that the team drafted.

Grigson was agressive in free agency. Some of the players brought in did help but it didn't set the team up for long-term success and his poor drafting left this team with a lot of holes.

We have seen the right way to build a team for long-term success and the wrong way. Ballard is on the right track. We all know the Colts have a lot of cap space, and he almost has to spend some of it, but just because he doesn't sign the most expensive free agents doesn't mean the guys he will sign are bad. The real key is the draft. This team needs to start drafting well so that they have players worth giving second contracts to and not ending up with a bunch of cap space.

  15. From a football standpoint I would actually be optimistic if I was Landry.

John Dorsey has proven to be a good GM. He also brought in Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith both are highly regarded. They have a ton of resources to improve the team.

I don't think the Browns are going to continue being the laughing stock of the league much longer.

Off the field i'm not happy about going from Miami to Cleveland and playing on the franchise tag.

Build for the future...don't overpay for the now!

The Colts are in a position where they can overpay for a free agent or two this year and still have cap flexibility in future years. They don't have many, if any, players that they need to worry about signing to a large extension soon. They can sign a couple good free agents while building for the future and preserving cap flexibility.

If we're going to surround Luck with talent like it's been said, then it makes no sense going defense. Time to go back to the Polian days and stock up on offense. It's what kept us consistently in the playoffs.

Just because the Colts are going back to systems similar to what they ran in the previous era does not mean they don’t need to bring in quality defensive players.

Changing their defensive system will change the traits they look at, it should allow young players to contribute quicker, but it does not diminish the need for talented defensive players.

When it comes to the draft...when you are picking third overall you are almost always looking at players who can play in any system. I have no doubt the Colts will take BPA regardless of almost any position.

This team has areas throughout the roster they need to improve. The systems they run offensively and defensively will not make these areas less of a priority to improve.

He and Bevell would be a really intriguing duo on the offensive side

Yeah I have been thinking the same thing. Reich is my preference for HC among the three candidates. Getting Bevell as OC would make me feel a whole lot better about the situation.

I know the Giants are also rumored to be interested in Bevell but i'm hoping the connection to Ballard and Dodds can get him to Indy.

Hopefully Reich and Ballard can put together a strong staff. That is really the most important thing regardless of the HC. Getting Bevell would be a huge win in this situation.

  19. I feel bad for the assistant coaches and their families. Some actually signed contracts I think?

Now Ballard has to fix this. This is the risk you run when you have to wait on a coach. Time for Ballard to really earn his pay.

I was getting pretty excited for McDaniels. The timing in all of this sucks because it becomes harder to put a staff together. Maybe the Colts get Dave Toub or Frank Reich. I'm still going to be excited.

  20. Here is an article I found from 2013. It is when the Cowboys switched from the 3-4 to 4-3.

    http://www.espn.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4708681/new-scheme-old-hat-for-matt-eberflus

Eberflus has ties to the 4-3 during his time at Missouri (article mentions speaking with Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy during the 2000s) but also has ties to the 3-4. He began in the NFL working under Rob Ryan with the Browns and then Dallas.

Here is an article about Peetz from last year. I think someone posted this in another thread too. .
