A question for all those who want the Colts to draft Nelson, a guard with a top-5 pick......

When, where and how are we getting an upgrade at tackle?

As of today,  there's no FA tackle that would be an upgrade on Costonzo.      Not even sure there's a FA tackle that would slot in on the right side.....

With all the needs that we have on both sides of the line,  do you really want to draft a guard FIRST and a tackle SECOND?!?       That's not only backwards to what would be traditionally done,   but it slows the building of the defense back another year....    and it's not clear of the caliber of tackle you will get in the 2nd round....

I think you bring up some good points. Personally, I have mixed feelings on Nelson. Being a guard and so many holes throughout this roster it is hard to get on board taking a guard within the top 10. (assuming that is where the Colts end up picking)

Some might view this like the Ryan Kelly debate a couple years ago but I don't. Although I was all about taking Kelly then I feel there is a big difference in taking a top interior lineman at 18 than within the top 10.

Free agency is something else worth considering in all of this too. The Colts are going to have a lot of cap space. I think they are actually projected to have the MOST cap space. There are not a lot of great free agents this offseason but two that I hope the Colts make a run at are both guards. Andrew Norwell of the Panthers and Justin Pugh of the Giants. I think Pugh is actually playing right tackle at the moment but believe he is more of a guard. The Colts can sign one or both of those guys. This would allow them to take a tackle or a defensive player in round 1 while still addressing the interior offensive line.

If Josh gets a QB that's not Tebow you will all feel dumb for acting like he's terrible

I don't think people should doubt the Xs and Os part of McDaniels. One of the players (DJ Williams I think) even said that he has never been more prepared for a game than he was when McDaniels was the coach.

The downfall of McDaniels was everything outside of the Xs and Os. He didn't want to deal with it. (from what I read) I also don't think he gained a great reputation by the way he treated others.

I find McDaniels intriguing as a possible head coach. I would not have any concerns about the football stuff. His handling of things outside of football would need vetted. That is a legit concern, imo.

  3. I didn't want to start a new thread for this but consider.....

A lot of speculation around Harbaugh returning to the NFL but there is another current Big Ten coach that is worth watching. He also coached in the NFL for many years including the Super Bowl. He has ties to Chris Ballard and Jim Irsay.

    Lovie Smith.

    - Successful NFL head coach.

    - Coached the Bears to a Super Bowl.

    - Chris Ballard worked for the Bears for all or most of the time Lovie was the head coach.

    - Lovie worked with Tony Dungy in Tampa. I think Jim is likely to ask Tony what he thinks of possible head coaches. Tony vouching for Lovie would mean something.

    A couple other thoughts...

    - No way to know how Ballard views Lovie. Just because they worked together in Chicago does not mean that Ballard thinks highly of Lovie.

    - Obviously I have no way to know for certain but I believe Jim Irsay has a desire to hire a head coach who is proven over a current coordinator.

    - I don't know if Lovie has a desire to leave Illinois but I would be surprised if he turned down a chance to return to the NFL.

My point is that Lovie is a name to watch out for. All of the speculation is around Jon Gruden and Jim Harbaugh but I think there is just a good of a chance that Lovie is hired by the Colts as there is of Gruden or Harbaugh. It could also be none of them...time will tell.

For more thoughts after talking to GMs regarding Jimmy G trade - Pats will deal this pick by 4pm, most likely for a DL...

That would make a lot more sense for the Pats.

They already gave up like a 1st and a 3rd for Cooks. Giving up another high draft pick for a receiver does not seem like something Belichick is likely to do.

So. Does that change our record in 2017? Does our official record for 2017 have an asterisk beside it?

Luck playing last year doesn't put an asterisk next to the record. Luck not playing this season does mean we should consider that when making a performance analysis. He is the most important player on the team in terms of the number of wins this team gets.

How can you not make the connection between Luck playing/not playing and the number of wins this team has?

The top of this roster has been bad for awhile and that takes time to improve. He made some good moves in his first offseason as GM so let's see what he can do going forward. Have a little patience before putting the guy on the hot seat.

What about bring back Bruce Arians if he is done in Arizona

    I would say no.

I like Bruce but not his offense. He wants long passes similar to what Chud likes to do. (not saying they run the exact same system) I'd like to see the Colts next head coach install an offense that emphasizes more quick passing.

Interesting name and probably on a potential list.  But I still think Jim is going to want to hire a former HC and not go down that 1st. time HC path again.

I agree. I have felt that Jim will want to get someone who is proven as a head coach.

I suspect that if Jim could have gotten a big name coach then Pagano would have been gone at some point over the last year or two. Unlike previous years I can't imagine Pagano coming back after this season. So you get rid of Pagano but what if the big names don't want to come? Harbaugh might stay at Michigan and Gruden might stay in broadcasting. There might be an unexpected firing (McCarthy?) but the Colts could have to consider a first time head coach.

I think it was Stephen Holder who said this week that Ballard is running the show. Jim is listening to him. If Ballard feels strongly about Nagy, Toub, or some other coach he knows then I think there is a real possibility that the Colts get a first time head coach in January.

I think only Luck and Kelly are untouchable.  The luster for TY has dimmed for me.

I feel the same. I'm at the point where i'm I actually hope the Colts do trade TY. I would rather get a decent draft pick and be free to use the salary elsewhere. (though i'm not sure what the cap implications would be for trading him) If Hilton were to get traded I think it would come after the season is over, though.

I am hoping the Colts let Vontae Davis and Donte Moncrief walk after this season. So if they could get something for either one in a trade I would be in favor of that. Maybe a team that feels they can contend would give up a late pick for them if they are down at CB or WR.

I also agree with others who feel the Colts should trade Gore. I feel awful for him. He chose to come here thinking this team would contend for a Superbowl and things have been crap. He can still produce and is the type of player you want on your team.

With all that said I don't think any moves are likely to happen.

  9. It's clear Chuck has no answers. I'm not sure what other answers he can give to these questions short of saying himself that he deserves to be fired. If he had answers then this team would not have been shutout today.

I was fine with Chuck coming back this year based on who seemed available to replace him. After the game today I feel like they need to let him go now. It's hard to keep around someone, especially your head coach, who simply has no answers.

  10. I'd be excited as heck if the Colts were able to hire Jon Gruden, Jim Harbaugh, or Sean Payton.

None of us truly know what interest, if any, Gruden or Harbaugh would have. They very well might not have any interest. I'm throwing Sean Payton out there too because I think there is a chance the Saints could part ways with him after this season though it is not likely.

Dave Toub is an interesting candidate. I think the notion that you need to be an offensive or defensive coordinator before a head coach is overblown. It's not like special team coaches don't know football. There are more important traits to look for, imo. How would they manage? Organize?

With that said I obviously have no idea of Toub has the desired traits for a head coach. I also would be a bit surprised to see Jim hire someone with no head coaching experience. He might not have much of a choice if he can't land Harbaugh or Gruden.

It will be interesting to see how January plays out. Jim better get the next head coaching hire right.

  11. Sucks to hear about the injury to GR3.

I'm still excited for the season to start. I'm looking forward to watching the Pacers this season. I'm honestly mostly relieved Paul is no longer here. That isn't meant to be a knock on him I just didn't believe there was a good chance he would sign a new contract with the Pacers so i'd rather move forward sooner without him.

Still wish the Pacers had drafted Swanigan over Leaf.

I'm looking forward to watching the NBA in general. All this player movement will make things a lot more interesting. I still think Golden State and Cleveland are the best teams but OKC and Boston can give them a legit series.

I'm looking forward to October 17.

  12. I'd love to see Harbaugh become the Colts head coach after this season. While I think he will come back to the NFL at some point i'm not sure it will be for next season. I haven't read anything to make me believe that Harbaugh will look to leave Michigan after this season. Michigan certainly isn't going to look to fire him either.

I do think Jim Irsay will want a head coach with a proven track record. I still think Jon Gruden or Sean Payton (he might get fired after this season) are more likely than Jim Harbaugh.

  13. I would pass on Rex Ryan. While he is a better DC than TM I think the Colts biggest issue is lack of difference makers on defense.

I also prefer the Colts change their defensive philosophy. You can't consistently have a great offense and defense. Teams have to be intentional with how they build their rosters and the type of players they bring in.

Assuming Luck comes back to normal at some point I think you can count on one of the most productive offenses in the league. You can win with a defense that is average if that is the case.

I think it would be easier to build an average defense if the Colts moved to more of a Seattle/Atlanta type of defense. Seattle's defense is loaded and they have several key veterans but (generally speaking) I think that type of defense is easier for young players to be productive than it is the 3-4/hybrid scheme the Colts run.

  14. I think the roster is more talented especially on the defensive side. Drafting Hooker, Wilson, Bashman and signing Hankins, Sheard, Simon are some talent upgrades. The offensive side didn't need nearly as much attention except on the offensive line. I feel like the Colts were betting on the young guys on the line improving and based on what we have seen so far that is a bet that doesn't look like it will pay off.

  15. I don't expect Dorsett to play up to the level you hope from a first round pick but I do believe he has a lot more to give than what he showed with the Colts. I think New England is likely to do a better job of utilizing him. Even with Edelman injured i'm not sure where Dorsett fits on their depth chart as they have other receivers that will get their share of reps.

I don't know much about Brissett except he played well know to win a game or so as a rookie. Hopefully he is a clear upgrade over Tolzein and Morris. The Colts don't make this trade if they don't feel that way.

I think Dorsett is a free agent next spring. The chances of the Colts resigning him were not likely good. This trade (hopefully) gives them a capable backup quarterback for a few years.

  16. Here are a couple of names that I think are worth watching.

Jim Bob Cooter - Has done a nice job as the Lions OC. He is young but I can easily see him getting some serious consideration.

Mike Vrabel - This will be his first year as the Texans DC. They should do well. He has a great reputation. I think he will quickly rises to the top of head coach candidate lists next winter.

I think people are underestimating how great Edleman is. Yeah BB can plug in John Doe or whoever and make it work TO AN EXTENT but I think this is a bad loss for the Pats. I think he is more valuable than Gronk actually with the Roster they have. The Pats can get away with winning without Gronk because a lot of what Tom does he is quick hitters to Edleman and speed guys, Edleman had sure hands too, better than Welker IMO.

I agree. I'm sure Pats have guys who will step up and be productive but Edelman is a darn good receiver and not as easy to replace as some might think.

  18. When I think of tanking I think of a team acquiring picks and young players with the intention of having a top pick in the upcoming draft. Being content with a bad present for a great future.

I don't think that is what the Colts did.  They would not have signed Hankins, Sheard, and Simon.

I still say that Pagano was only kept because the Colts couldn't get a proven upgrade. Irsay does not want to roll the dice on a rookie head coach. He wants a Harbaugh, Peyton, Gruden, etc. That is just how I read that situation. I could be wrong.

A lot of NFL contracts are 1-2 year deals. Depends on how they are structured but the type of deals the Colts gave free agents are pretty common. They have been doing that in the past. It's smart regardless if you are in the process of building a good team or already a contender.

Talent can come early in the draft but the important thing is for the team to identify and stay committed to how the team will be built/play. From there you find guys who can be difference makers in your system. I'm not saying that drafting early doesn't help that and there are not benefits to it but I don't think it is nearly as important in the NFL as it is say in the NBA.

  19. There are three things I would say are important to have in a coach. I think you will find these things in each type of (successful) coach regardless if they are like Carroll, Dungy, or Belichick.

    - Be authentic

    - Clear vision

    - Focus on the small

People have to be who they are. They can't fake it for long because the mask eventually comes off. Pete couldn't win if he tried to act like Belichick and vice versa.

I also think the great coaches have a clear vision and focus on the small stuff.

Saban = the process, Belichick = do your job, Dungy = do what we do, Carroll = always compete, etc.

Also, their message is delivered consistency. I think they all focus on doing the little things each day but deliver the message in an authentic way.
