  1. I think you play the regulars. If guys are hurt maybe you don't push it and play them like you would if you are in the playoff mix.

I know JMV has suggested playing Chad Kelly but I probably wouldn't. I see him as the back-up at best over Brian Hoyer going forward. Maybe you want to play him to evaluate that possibility but the Colts likely have a good idea on this already.

Whether it's Jacoby or Chad Kelly I don't think either one will change how the Colts move forward at the quarterback position.

I believe Jacoby is due a signing bonus before free agency begins that will essentially lock him onto the roster for 2020. I expect the Colts to pick that up. Jacoby will be the starter again in 2020. The Colts will try and improve the receiver group and hope to be healthier next year.

They probably want to upgrade that position if the right player is available in the draft and if he is they take him and he is the backup next year to Jacoby.

There really isn't a lot of young guys not playing already. With so many injuries, especially on offense, they have to play who is healthy and don't have much of a choice who to play in some cases.

  2. I'll point to 5 things that anyone can argue has played a role in the struggles for the Colts this season.

    1. Chris Ballard

    2. Coaches

    3. Current Players

    4. Injuries

    5. Andrew Luck retiring

The Pareto principle applies here. (for any event 80% of effect is from 20% of the cause)

Andrew Luck retiring represents 20% of the "cause" but it has impacted 80% of the season.

Yes, there are some thing that Ballard could have done better. Same for the coaches. Same for the current players. But Luck retiring changed the entire season for this team and I think most people understand that.

Personally, I consider Ballard one of the reasons to feel optimistic about the team going forward.

  3. I don't think either of these guys should prevent the Colts from signing a veteran wide receiver and drafting one fairly early next spring. These guys can give the team some decent snaps but neither are guys a team is going deep into the playoffs with if they are playing a high number of snaps.

I do wonder if Ballard reaches and takes Love with their mid 1st round pick, or if he gauges the market for him, and makes the sly draft move by getting a stud in round 1 at DT or WR, and then still landing Love in round 2. I guess we'll see how much Ballard covets Love come draft day unless his interest in him is all a show.

Ballard will be the face of whatever decision is made but I don't think that we should forget about Jim Irsay in this process.

It will likely be Jim Irsay deciding if the Colts take a QB in round 1.

Watch the video below around 1:50. This is when Irsay was announcing the firing of Bill Polian. Irsay stated that he has final say in major decisions and specifically mentions first round picks. I know this is from 2012 but I suspect this hasn't changed since.

I didn't take this to mean that Jim is deciding on who the first round pick is every year but I do think that deciding to use a first round pick on a QB is one of those major franchise decisions that Jim will be the one to make.

I'm speculating here but the more time goes by this season, and we see more of the same from Jacoby and this offense, I start to think more that the Colts will be making a draft choice early for QB. I don't think Jim will be passive with this.

This is an extremely useful site:

2020 NFL Free Agents Tracker | Spotrac
    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents

I know it's going to trigger the "you don't know Chris Ballard" responses, but Amari Cooper is still on track to be a free agent, and Dallas still hasn't completed a deal for Dak. Yes he's gonna cost at least $22m a year, but going for bargains at receiver has hurt the passing game.

I think Andrew Luck retiring and injuries have hurt the passing game.

Devin Funchess was one of the highest paid free agent wide receivers last spring. He has played in one game this year. He was supposed to be their number two wide receiver.

There was hope, at least I did, that one of Daurice Fountain or Deion Cain would be a steady contributor at receiver this year. One is injured the entire year and the other was cut.

Another important player to the receivers, 2rd round pick Paris Campbell, has missed almost half the season.

The #1 receiver, TY Hilton, has missed 4 games.

Also, we shouldn't forget about Jacoby's injury and the brace he is playing with. Most of us would hate walking around the block with the brace he played with on Thursday let alone play a football game.

Every team in the league is going to have a rough time with their passing game if the above happened to them.

I think the Colts need to sign a veteran receiver (or bring Funchess back) but not necessarily the top receiver. I also think it would be good to draft one but around round 3 and not round 1.

That is a big problem with most of this forum.

We had elite play from Manning and Luck and when that don't happen it's hate on Brissett time.

The thing is how many super bowls did that elite play of Manning and Luck bring? One in 20 years.

And the thing with the Manning/Luck teams is they lacked in areas too. When Peyton was here the team often had poor run defense. When Luck was here there wasn't much of a run game or defense most of the time.

Every team, even the Super Bowl winners, have holes. Seattle when they won had a great running game and defense but their passing game was not so good. The Broncos when they won had an elite defense, running game that was good enough, but their passing game was not good.

This Colts team is pretty well rounded but Andrew Luck is really the guy that would have enabled them to be elite. When he retired they became what we have seen all year...an average team.

It's fair to want more from the team. The Colts actions suggest they don't view Jacoby as the long-term answer at QB. But that doesn't mean Jacoby should be replaced at all cost. I think there should be more appreciation for Jacoby than what he is often given.

In the current state of the Colts, Love in my opinion would be one of the better QB options in this upcoming draft. Particularly because he could be had with our second 2nd rounder, has some of the best traits, and would benefit most from sitting behind Brissett for a year.

This should allow Ballard to address DT and WR, and then get Love with their 3rd pick unless they do some draft maneuvering.

I wouldn't be sure the Colts can get him with their second pick in round 2.

In 2018 there were 5 QBs drafted in round 1. I think 2020 will be similar to that. If if you look at the situation for each team there are lots of teams that will be looking to address QB early.

Bengals, Dolphins, Chargers, Titans, and Colts are all likely to take a QB early. I think the Panthers might too. Plus, there are some wild cards. Is Jon Gruden content with Derek Carr? Will the Bucs stick with Winston? What about the Saints and Pats?

If the Colts see a QB as the guy (whether it's Love or someone else) then they might have to take him in round 1 otherwise you risk losing him. And if you don't mind the risk of losing him then do you really like him/believe in him?

    Isaiah Simmons SS/LB Clemson

I've had a chance to catch a couple Clemon games this year. Simmons is really fun to watch.

Simmons is one of the better prospects at linebacker but his athletic ability and versatility makes him really unique compared to other linebackers.

I don't think that he plays a position that is an obvious need for the Colts to address (like defensive line is) but he is so unique (not to mention good) that I would be thrilled if the Colts were able to get him.

I think adding Simmons to the Colts would give them the potential to have a truly dynamic linebacking group. I would love to see what Simmons and Darius Leonard could do together. Plus, Bobby Okereke has the potential to be a pretty good linebacker in his own right.

Even if Campbell  becomes good we need another wr. Hilton getting  old.

Agreed. Even if the Colts had a strong passing game I think WR is a position that you have to look to address within the first 3 rounds again. I love TY but as a receiver enters their 30s you can't count on them as your #1 receiver for many years. (especially not at 5'9 180 lbs)

Defensive line and offensive tackle are other areas I think the Colts will look to bolster.

  10. Disappointing game.

Plenty of blame to go around specifically on offense. I don't think this was the best play calling Reich has done, TY dropped a couple balls that should have been caught, and this game (particularly the second half) was a chance for Jacoby to step up and lead this team on some key drives and he didn't get it done.

While all of the Colts games this year (except last week vs Jacksonville) have been close I think the Colts continue to show they are an average team. I was hoping they would come out and take care of business tonight but it was more of what they have been all year.

Obviously the Colts are still very much in the mix for the playoffs despite the loss tonight but they don't appear trending upward much from where they were earlier this season and that's disappointing.

Because he absolutely screwed this team by retiring at 29.....2 weeks before the start of the season.

Because he's mentally tired. Are you * kidding me? Tony Romo played in his mid thirties with broken ribs and colar bones. * him. He's a *

Lots of people are saying the anger is from the timing of this and thats a lie. The truth is people would be just as upset if this happened in March as they were last night...because either way the end result is Andrew Luck is no longer playing and takes much of the Super Bowl hopes with him. I can just here the whiners now if this happened in March...”He should have taken more time to think about it,  has plenty of years left, blah blah”

Plus, Irsay said it himself last night that he advised Andrew to hold off as long as possible making a decision like this because that’s what you should do with big decisions. So you can bet the Colts we’re trying to talk him out of it and pushed this to the end in hopes that he keeps playing. Given that Andrew is one of 6-7 people on the planet with his skill set any organization would have done the same thing.

All we see is the game on Sunday. If anyone has ever had surgery and went through rehab you know it absolutely blows. And yes it blows mentally too. Anyone who can’t comprehend what it takes to mentally come back from an injury should zip it. Football is a rough sport and I highly doubt there are many players not rehabbing something at any given time. So maybe Luck comes back from the ankle but what’s he dealing with in 2 months? After the season? It’s always likely to be something. The money isn’t going to make it worth it for all and that’s okay.

Players have a life beyond football. Luck and his wife are expecting and it’s not so hard to believe that maybe he would rather walk away now, before more wear and tear on his body, and be able to play with his kid. Even without a child it’s understandable why a player walks away with seemingly good years remaining.

Just because some players want to keep going, like Romo, doesn’t mean every player has to. At the end of the day it’s their life and their career. Andrew owes the fans nothing. He owes the team nothing. He is doing what he feels is right for him and that’s exactly what he should do. If people can’t handle a player calling the shots on their own career they should go find some hobby that allows them to be a control freak.

Anyone who decided to boo Luck last night needs to grow up.

The fact is the Colts we’re very fortunate to have Luck as their QB even if it was for “only” 6 years. He was great in the community too. Maybe some don’t realize or they do but don’t care because they are too busy acting like a 3 year old who doesn’t get their way.

That is going to haunt this fanbase.

And I blame Schefter.  He couldn't wait until after the game to leak his precious inside info?  He had to know how that was going to turn out.

I've never had anything against Adam Schefter before, but I will never forgive him for what he did to Andrew Luck tonight.  That was shameful.

I'm not sure it's going to haunt the fanbase. Sports can bring out the worst in some people and it doesn't matter what city, sport, or league. They are not the first fans to do something undesirable. That said those who did boo are clowns.

I think Schefter was simply doing his job.

The person to blame is whoever leaked the info to Schefter. (I'm doubting that was Luck and his camp)

He owes it to his teammate and his fanbase to not screw the team and the fans a couple of weeks before the season.  This was not a snap decision made by him.  Quitting has been on his mind and he should have quit when it first crept into his mind.

He doesn't owe it to teammates or fanbase. Players are free to retire whenever they want. Just like teams can cut and trade players whenever they want. Go ask Peyton Manning how he felt when the Colts got rid of him and if the Colts owed him anything.

Circumstances are not always ideal if life including sports...you just have to deal with it. It's not ideal timing, it would have been better if this happend in the spring but it didn't. Life goes on.

If he physically can't play then that's one thing.  If he physically can play then he at least owed the fans this season.

Luck doesn't owe the fans anything. No athlete does.

He should do what's best for him and his family and live the life he wants.

And if he isn't all in on football I would rather get this over with and move on as a Colts fan.

  15. I'm anxious for training camp to start and interested to see how Fountain performs.

He is very easy to write off after last year but it was known that he was pretty raw when drafted. He mentioned on his Twitter account a couple months back something along the lines of learning the hard way that nothing is guaranteed you have to work every day.

If I had to bet money on someone to surprise people with his performance this camp I think Fountain is as good of a candidate as anyone.

I’m not a big fan of trading for Conley. His injury history worries me. I do think PG is the position we must up grade this off season.

One would think New Orleans will  want to move Jrue. He’s 29 yrs old and doesn’t fit with the youth movement going on down there. I’d love to bring him to Indy to play next to Vic.

Theres a rumor that the Spurs want to trade DeRozan for Bogy McDermott and the 18th pick.  I am a big Bogy fan but that’s a deal we’d have to take a long look at.

I thought about New Orleans potentially trading Jrue but read over the weekend they want to keep him. They think that with him and their young talent they now have (and more after the draft) they can be competitive.

The Pacers would need to sign and trade Bogy which can't be done until free agency starts. (if I understand the rules correctly) I also don't think the Pacers would need to give up a pick. I don't think the Spurs have the cap space to sign Bogy without a sign and trade. Plus, DeRozan isn't THAT much better than Bogy.

Thanks for the heads up. I called this a long time ago. The Lakers traded them Ball, Ingram, Hart, and the #4 pick. The fact they were able to keep Kuzma is amazing. To me Kuzma is their best young player. Now the Lakers have LeBron, AD, and Kuzma + a ton of cap space to get another good to great player.

The Pelicans also got two additional future first round picks.

Even without Kuzma I think that's a pretty nice get. Adding those guys with Zion gives them some nice young players to move forward with.

You may have seen the rumor that San Antonio trades us DeMar DeRozen for Bogan Bogdonavic and Doug McDermott.

Bogdonavic goes on a sign-and-trade to match salaries.

DeRozen has 2 years left on his deal at $27 mil..he averaged 21 a game for the Spurs....For his career..he averages 19 a game

DeRozen and Bogdonavic are virtually the same age.

DeRozen would play the win..guard-small forward with Vic

Holiday would move into the starting lineup.

    better defense..in DeRozen..but he's a mid-range shooter..not a 3-shooter

    What do you think?

I like DeRozen and I think he would certainly be better than losing Bogan for nothing. I don't think he makes the Pacers any better or worse in the grand scheme of things though.

the reports are the nets are expected to be interested in Durant Harris and Butler plus are pretty much a lock to sign Kyrie. that should give the Pacers a really good shot at Dlo cause the nets wouldnt be able to match our offer. hopefully the jazz and celtics fight over Conley and we can steal Russell lol

Russell would be a huge signing for the Pacers. I'd be in favor of that. I think the Pacers need to find a way to improve the top of the roster if they want to have a shot at being a serious contender in the East. Russell is probably their best bet to do that.

I'm pretty sure Herb Simon has been against going after restricted free agents though. Things can always change but I'm pretty sure he hasn't allowed the team to do that in the past.

  20. It's very difficult to have two edge rushers as good as Freeney/Mathis were and Miller/Chubb are. It's not a requirement to win. It's certainly a nice bonus but not really something you can expect to always have.

It's important to remember how Bill Polian viewed the Colts defense when Freeney/Mathis were here. He viewed the defense primarily as a great compliment to their offense. With Dungy's defense you could win with:

+ Smaller/More athletic players (easier to find later in the draft)

+ Younger players (simple defense, easier for young guys to step in right away)

= A defense that was cheaper, small, played a ton of zone, and was easy to run over.

Remember, other teams used a similar defense as the Colts (Bucs, Bears) but those teams used more resources to building/maintaining their defenses because they didn't have the offense the Colts did.

I don't think this is an either/or situation. The goal should be finding and maintaining the right balance. You want to maximize your strengths but you can't be too weak in one area otherwise you will get exposed in the playoffs.

  21. I thought the Patriots had a good draft. They got a big target for TB to throw to, another talented CB, Winovich seems like the perfect defensive end for them, and another RB and offensive linemen to help their run game even more. (which is important when your QB is 40+)

The Saints didn't have many draft picks but I thought they did well to come out of the draft with what should be a good starting center and one of the better safety prospects in CGJ.

I thought the Falcons did well in round 1 to really improve their offensive line.
