  1. Peterson is in fact one of the very best CB's in the game.  Here's a short list of others who are in a higher class than Davis.

Sherman, Revis, Brock, Boykin, DeAngello Hall, Rodgers-Cromartie, Walter Thurmond, Browner, Desmond Trufant, Carlos Rogers, Antonio Cromartie, Cortland Finnigan, Talib. Chris Harris, Byron Maxwell.

I can go on.  Verner, Haden, Tim Jennings, Brandon Flowers, Morris Claiborne....

All are an upgrade over Vontae Davis.  I could come up more,  Even some old guys who's only down side compared to Davis is age.

Would that be the same Morris Claiborne who had just lost his starting role for Dallas to Orlando Scandrick (a name missing from your list) prior to his ACL injury yesterday?

  2. If you look at recent years, you have to go back to 2009 to find a team that had back to back lousy seasons to become the worst in the NFL (the Rams had gone 2-14 the year before they got the top pick).  If you are looking for likely candidates, check out teams that have QB play that falls off a cliff due to either age or injury.  The Rams fall into that category although their defence looks decent.  The Texans and Vikings have ageing journeymen under center although the Vikings already have their QB of the future so I'd guess if plan A doesn't work he'll get a chance to prove himself.

  3. Think this might be a tricky question.  If he's not the Reggie we are used to he's likely gone at the end of the season. If he performs at the level we are used to he'll probably go close on the catches and yardage but is likely to get offered another season or two.  The one wild card would be if he performs well and gets a nice shiny ring at the end of the season, he may decide to retire at the top of his game rather than chase the records.

  4. Just the facts, no spin:

Career numbers-Brown= 66 games and 2,377 yds = 36 yds per game @ 4.3 ypc behind poor run blocking O lines (that included, well mainly no one of note) and 83 receptions at 9.2 per reception, also 12 games of 60 or more yds rushing or 18% of games played

Richardson=47 games and 1,513 yds @  = 32 yds per game @ 3.3 ypc behind poor run blocking O line ? (that included Joe Thomas and Alex Mack) and 86 receptions at 7.9 per reception, also 9 games of 60 or more yds rushing or 19%

Richardson has only played 31 games in the NFL, not 47 - http://www.nfl.com/player/trentrichardson/2533032/careerstats

  5. I agree with not over paying in FA.  Overpaying seems to be an inherent part of FA.  The Colts have a draft day problem of not having enough picks though.  Grigson has miscalculated on these trades and put himself in a bind this year.  Grigson can't afford to break the bank this off season because Luck's contract up in 2015.  The Patriot Way is to stock pile picks - I like that approach with sprinkling in a few FAs

Agree about overpaying being an inherent part of free agency.  If the player is talented and the price is right teams will normally find a way of keeping their players.  That leaves players that aren't very good, players that want too much money and the group that should be targeted - those who either didn't fit their previous scheme or were buried on a depth chart and didn't get to see much action.

Every year some team spends big in free agency, they get lauded in the press as offseason champions but normally they end up picking in the top 10 in the draft the next year as the players signed aren't as good as advertised.

  6. I am in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and have been following the colts since the NFL was first shown in the UK (around 1982/83 IIRC).  Picked the colts as was always attracted to the underdog and the Colts at that time were rotten.

Thankfully things have improved since then and the organisation is class.

Another Brit here (about an hour west of London) with a similar perspective to you.  Started watching the game when it was first shown regularly here in the UK, decided after the first season or two I had to pick a team of my own and decided that the 0-8-1 Colts were a team that would obviously improve rather than just jumping on the Cowboys/Redskins/Dolphins/49ers/Raiders bandwagon that most UK fans were on at the time.  They didn't show much of the Colts then so if I wanted to keep up to date with the games I had to listen to the American Armed Forces radio network when the reception was behaving to hear the not quite glorious exploits of Pagel, Dickey & MacMillan.

  7. Ya maybe but I will give him another year Pagano however Pep if this offense still isn't performing at the end of the year then he needs to go.

Changing the OC every year isn't going to help Luck - if you look at the QBs who have had frequent changes of OC you have a list of players who haven't got anywhere near fulfilling the potential they were viewed as having when drafted.

  8. 9 times out of 10, the unknown is more intriguing then the known.

On many teams by far the most popular player with fans is the backup QB (normally until he gets to play in a couple of games).  The coaches see all the training sessions, have more tape than the fans and know what they were trying to achieve on each play - if they think there is improvement by promoting somebody to the first string or benching somebody they know a lot more than the average fan.

  9. Maybe we should be inviting Brandon Lloyd for a tryout?  He's still only 32, has over 200 catches for the last 3 seasons and was All Pro in 2010.  Obviously the main reservation would be why the Patriots didn't look to bring him back given their lack of receiving experience this season but he may be the reliable experienced receiver we need for the rest of the year and wouldn't cost us a draft pick.
