  1. Wake me up March 8th... until then there will be so much junk by the media, who all know they have "the" scoop on Manning. When Manning or Irsay announce something, then we will know for sure- the rest is just talking heads talking (meaningless drivel).

If he is healthy though, I would expect that he will pull on the Colts blue next season, lest Mr Irsay be found a liar "if Peyton is healthy he will be playing for the Colts". Besides, if I was Coach Pagano- knowng that every NFL coach is on a short leash, would I not want a healthy PM playing for me?

  2. It seems these days that RB's are easy to replace- with UDFA and low round picks starting and doing well all over the league.

A really good WR, with an understanding of the offense, reading D's-- that's harder to replace. Wayne would leave a gaping hole in us right now, simply because we don't really have anyone like him on the roster. Garcon is not a bad WR, but just not the same kind of #1 reciever that Wayne is.

  3. Anderson & Brayton-- two bright spots on a dismal year. Liked thier effort and you can't have too much good depth on the DL If I had to choose, Anderson.

Mathis- what D coach would not want to have him? Sure that he will get offers though and not sure we will have the $ to match

Wayne/Garcon- Wayne may be getting a little older, but still think he is one of the best WR's out there- regardless of who is playing QB, we will need to give them some help. Outside of Wayne and Garcon, well there is Collie and not a lot else that could give our O a boost. Will probably have to settle for one or the other though b/c I don't think we have the cap space to pay two top 10 WR salaries- probably Garcon if they have to choose

Tamme- Great team player, one of the few good Special teams players that we have

Wheeler- like Hagler, may keep coming around, but don't feel any special need to have him here

Saturday- if he wants to play, no doubt want him here

  4. Our Off scheme was not a problem. Arians more or less took our system with him to Pitt and put his own stamp on it. think it is good we have someone on staff who is familiar with what we have done to blend in with what Arians will try to implement== that whole continuity thing, even in the midst of a lot of change.

  5. Honestly think that he will bring in someone who is not a veteran DC, but someone he can work with to develop the D in his own style. See him being a HC who is more hands on with the D.

Just a few names to consider outside of those mentioned (would really like to see them pursue Butch Davis- who is talking to the Bucs about their DC spot)

Mark Carrier DL coach Jets (previously coached in Bal)

    Richard Smith LB coach Broncos

    Jim Washburn DL coach Eagles

    Kevin Coyle DB coach Bengals

    Gary Gibbs LB coach Chiefs

For a few names a little further out

Tom Bradley, DC from Penn State

    Pat Narduzzi DC Michigan State

  6. Maybe only 1 losing season, no matter who is at QB- Irsay seems to have smelled blood with those SB years and not sure he is going to take too many losing seasons.

It's not often you fire a coach with 26-22 regular season record (no matter whose coattails you think he is riding) with 2 playoff appearances and one Super Bowl appearance in 3 years. That is a pretty high standard. Pagano may be excited, but he may have a short shelf-life if there is not some real progress in short order. Even if it is Luck at QB, the expectations are higher these days for rookie QB's.

Irsay is accustomed to winning-- don't think the rope will too long

  7. Words of Samari Rolle- DB with Pagano in BAL (from ESPN int http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/tag/_/name/colts-hire-chuck-pagano )

"Some more highlights of my chat with Rolle about Pagano:

On personnel: Expect Pagano to play to the strengths of the people he inherits and to try to gain favorable matchups. The Ravens simplified things more than people think in ways that simply got their best people in the best position.

Rolle rates Pagano as a “great adapter.” He expects Pagano will ultimately want the Colts to field a bigger defense, but will know getting it will be a gradual process."

If he is a great Def coach, why would he want to get rid of Freeney or Mathis for that matter. He should be, and probably is, salavating with ideas on how to more effectively use these guys.

Let's not forget when talking about Freeney's numbers that he has been coached by Larry Coyer the last few years....

  8. Think this will be on of the more interesting parts of new regiem. for years we never really discussed the FA market much because we didn't do much with it, especially on the top end of the market. have no real complaints- we won!

It will be exciting to watch to see if Grigson, who was a part of FA happy Philadelphia will fill some holes with FA's. We have some immediate holes that could use a FA rather than a developing draft pick. I think OG and CB are two places we need immediate help- Grubbs would def be an upgrade over any G we have. Also like Gurode at C if Saturday retires (which to me is looking more and more likely)

  9. Believe that Irsay recognized that Polian was a control freak-- and when things go bad, person in control has to go. If would have let the coaches coach and shared the player presonnel responsibilities, probably would have saved his job. When he had to micro-manage everything, well there is no one left to blame except him. Unfortunately, he did such a sorry job these last few years with his son, a lot of collateral damage came with it.

All that aside, it really was a pretty bland interview. Just reminding us that we just have to wait, and be patient to see what happens with Manning. All this talk from La Confora and others about Peyton cryptically telling everyone he is leaving is junk, only making for good TV theater. Manning is a pretty straight shooter and I think his interview with Kravitz has been way overblown and taken out of context (what else do expect from the media?). Frustrated, sure who wouldn't be. Angered by his friends getting fired, wouldn't we all be. First time going through large scale change, terrifying (if you've ever been through a layoff at work you know what this feels like). Wouldn't expect him to react any other way. Him being healthy, handed $28 million, a new head coach ready to lead us to another SB and he is all go.

BTW, all this talk of Manning and Luck not being able to get along, this is business. No rookie is going to come in here and play QB better than Manning- I don't think he is afraid nor will his ego be hurt.

  10. One of the big complaints about Caldwell was his only meaningful HC experience was at Wake Forest and his record was not that good.

Tressel, if nothing else, is a winner. Unlike some, I don't sweat what he did at Ohio State too much. We are talking *ic NCAA rules- the most conveluted, stupid set of rules ever created for managing a sport. That he tried to help his players, when as college students, they >>>ed up- is not a crime. He is known as a great game planner and game manager- something we have sorely missed these last few years. He is also a players coach, something that we have had around here for a while and I think that plays in his favor with Irsay in particular.

If he is hired, I would not be terribly surprised. It would be interesting to see what kind of staff he could compile. If he is hired, would like to see him get strong OC & DC's who know NFL football rather than college coaches. If he's not hired- won't be surprised if he sticks around here in one capacity or another.

Really just don't want to see them take a flyer on some assistant with no proven leadership ability. One of the reasons I liked Grigson's comment about leadership. You don't have to have a screamer on the sidelines, but you do have to have someone who can be respected and creates a positive atmosphere to win games.

  11. If Grigson is serious about the "leadership" quality...

    Zimmer

    Tressel

Fill in the blank of an experienced head coach

Still feel like they will go with someone with HC experience. If Peyton comes back, don't want a rookie head coach trying to figure out game management (sound familiar) and if we have Luck, rookie QB w/ rookie HC would not seem like a great combination for leadership

  12. Of course we may never know how good of a coach he could have been with the way he was manhandled by Polian & Son in strategic decisions as well as being handed a roster this year full of 3rd tier players. Just given the situation, yes probably time for him to go and do respect the person very much.

  13. Really liked the quote on leadership... think that is smart. Your assts can be creative, but HC is leader to give vision and direction

Leadership is one quality that Caldwell seemed to lack, Dungy had it, differently than most do, but he was a leader when you listened to how much his players went all out for him and wanted to succeed. That has not been here the last few years.

  14. Long list, but will say one thing, whether we have Peyton or Luck- would like to see us have an experienced HC. If we have Peyton, don’t want to try to break in a new HC who is new to being a HC as Peyton looks for another SB (believe we made that mistake with Caldwell and cost us a championship). If we have Luck, well, having a rookie QB is hard enough without a rookie HC learning his way as well.

Listed in my futile order of belief that they will be considered (not who I would like to see hired)…

    Current Assts/College Coaches

Marty Mornhinweg (don’t really want him, but real possibility. Maybe a few years with Andy Reid has helped him…????)

Winston Moss, Asst HC Green Bay Packers-

Jim Tressel- (don’t laugh- we didn’t like Caldwell because he didn’t feel like a winner, Tressel brims with confidence and is a good game-day coach… don’t think he will get it, but would be interesting to explore)

    Kirk Ferentz

    Chuck Pagano- Ravens DC

    Chip Kelly- HC Oregon

    Mike Zimmer

    Perry Fewell

    Tom Clements- Packers QB coach

Jim Leavitt (big flyer here, but while we are guessing… SF linebackers coach, was pretty successful as college HC @ South Florida & has connections with Colts through Dungy)

    Pepper Johnson- Patriots Asst

    Bruce Arians- Pitt OC

    Todd Bowles- Miami Asst/Interim HC

    Jim Haslett- DC Wash

    Past Head Coaches

Bill Billick (believe he might get serious consideration if Irsay is looking for exp HC…and really would like to see them at least talk to him)

    John Gruden

Todd Haley (don’t know why, just sounds like the kind of “out of the blue” name)
