  1. Yeah I suppose that there will be some great player that is deemed to be as good as Luck is projected but oh wait, that would probably require the first pick in the draft, which is funny, cause that is what we have now. The storm doesn't get anymore perfect than this right now but once every how many years? 1997 was the last year it happened for us.

rodgers, brady, big ben, brees all have superbowl rings and were not the #1 overal QB. In fact, besides Peyton i'm blanking on the last one to win an superbowl in the past 6 years or more other than eli. I guess you don't need a #1 pick.

    thanks frog

  2. let's face it, we're not as attractive to free agents as when peyton was here. Sure, the potential of luck may get some notice, but I think several things have hurt us recently.

    1. The way the "Peyton thing" went down and removing him from team. (the "circus" atmosphere)

    2. Actually not having him on team anymore.

    3. new coaching, Gm, etc. (this will hurt with veterans trying to get a ring)

    4. The "trailer sale" of Addai, Clark, etc.

    5. The 2-14 season

I could see us having inside track on perhaps ravens defensive guys or maybe Eagles guys but our front office will have to do some "selling".

I saw yesterday on NFL Network that players will want to go play with RG3. Kinda like how players wanted to play with Vick in philly. I haven't heard that about Luck. The are different type of players and I understand the difference but that made me think of the other "issues".

I think we'll survive but i don't expect us to land the "big fish" free agents unless we pay a boat-load.

We'll get no "discount" contracts because they wanna come play here, for a while at least.

yeah, people on here will say "we have money, they will come"

but as soon has that type of player, the one who is all about money, gets his money; then they usually never play like they did in a contract year and you end up overpaying

  3. Spent a good part of last evening reading all the comments on this thread... So much back and forth name calling, Manning bashing, Luck bashing, etc.....

fans turning on and lashing out at each other. Peyton was one of the best things to ever happen to the Colts organization, and the city of Indianapolis. There is no question about that. Facts are facts. There shouldn't even be a debate about that. As for Andrew Luck, he very well could be the Next Best Thing. I hope he is. Time will Tell. So much pressure put on this young man, huge shoes to fill, and very high expectations, but if he is the athlete we all see him to be, he will rise to the occasion and makes us all proud again. Does there really have to be so much hate flying out there right now..??

You are right, he does have HUGE shoes to fill, and he will have high expecations on him. I know I have high expectations for him. He's called the next best thing since Elway, hes a 99/100 on all draft boards, he's replacing PM, and he's replacing him early in the minds of many. All of these things add up to high expectations. The good part is for Luck, if he can make it through all this, it will only make him stronger as a person and player and of course fans will love him as much as they do Peyton!

  4. If the Colts were to do the trade for a bounty, it would have to be better than what the skins got, perhaps 3-#1"s and a few #2"s + something. It is not an unreasonable question, in fact it sparks good debate. I would however feel that if they were going to go the trade route and then pick up a Matt Flynn, they would have just held onto PM and traded the pick for a boatload of picks. Getting a prospect like Luck is so much more rare than a possiblility like a MAtt Flynn. Every year there seems to be a Matt Flynn pop up on the radar and then gets 100 million dollars to fail. Look at Cassell for an example. If Matt Flynn would have a little more tape to look over and was as successful as he was in that ONE game, perhaps you do that. I really can't see any way the team would select Matt Flynn over Luck for the future as both have flop potential but Luck will be cheaper and have a longer career. I just can't realistically see it happen but if it did, I would trust the team has thoroughly researched the pros and cons of all 3 scenarios.

It's quite possible that a QB in 2013 and 2014 will have a better career than luck. If we got what the Rams have, we could still have drafted a 1 st round qb in the next year or so and still have had peyton for 3-4 more years and add on top of that a few more high draft picks. Thats not a bad scenerio at all.

  5. He took responsibility, and making sweeping changes because of it. He could not do that while Peyton was healthy, and the Colts were winning. When it fell apart, he immediately took charge. Don't know what else you want?? Except to vent.. warranted or not.

If this was the Packers, the CEO would be fired. I just want resposibility for failures to all involved. No free passes

  6. I keep looking/thinking about what the roster will be like in 2012. They're going to bring in Luck. They need him to be able to have some semblance of success so that this isn't a disaster--that's if he's going to start anyways.

There is no way that Irsay would set this kid up for failure in his rookie season by sending him out to face NFL defenses with Donald Brown, Austin Collie, and Jacob Tamme at his disposal.

I keep saying to myself that something big is in store, it has to be. There has to be a plan that we don't know that is going to be executed to get this kid some big time weapons and a chance at success. Has to be.

Here is what I think.... I think they'll make a play to pick up some WR in the 2nd round with that 34th overall pick or they'll pick up Luck's TE Coby Fleener from Stanford AND sign a big time FA WR like Wallace or someone out there that we're not thinking of who can be a #1. Maybe Manningham.

You add Fleener, Manningham to what we already have and another rookie from a deep WR draft and we've got something. As it is though, there's just no way that they send Luck into this situation with the bare bones crew that is in place now. I'm telling you, something that we don't know yet is going to happen and they're going to bring in someone here somehow in the way of a big time weapon.

hopefully it's some good drafting from round 2 and up and we'll just try again in 2013

  7. I didn't say those positions needed to be at the top of their game they just have to be productive by the time they reach the title game to break it down for you both the ravens and tampa bay didn't have the best qb's but they played really good in the superbowl both teams had productive receivers, protection on the line and I don't think I need to talk about what those defense's did in there respective superbowl's. Look at the Pat's from this year's SB they lacked the secondary to stop the pass and lost the game they had the other 4 but the last 1 cost them the game.

we are on the same page

  8. Agreed. You would think so, but I among many others have been called out by other forum members for having some weird 'love affair' for Manning. I just see it as support for him.

Not agreeing or being positive about the Colts situation = being labeled pessamist, dumb, and usually results in the biggest one:

"If you were making business decisions for the Colts....." or "I'd like to see you make a business decision"

  9. Oh Jules. You know you are one of my favorite posters.

Here is the truth. Till Peyton picks a new team, it might be a good idea to let the vent or feelings subside and not get caught up in the middle. History will tell us all how things play out for Irsay's decision, Peyton's legacy, and to an extent even Polian's legacy with the Colts.

This offseason will have no shortage of drama. If I were Luck, I would just look at how Rodgers handled his business, purely on the field, and came out ahead in the eyes of fans and media. Luck, fair or not, has a bulls eye on his back with expectations. He just needs to not shy away from it and seize the bull by the horns.

Rodgers had it quite a bit easier:

    A better roster

    Better coaches

and peyton didn't play games when he was leaving as mr. favre did, big time games.

  10. You will not convince rabid Manning fans / Irsay haters and Luck doubters about ANY of the common sense and business factors required last week. Never. They are blind to the NFL structure, the philosophy of the draft and the salary cap, and the need to build in cycles. Greatness is hard to give up for some, and they are willing to turn a blind eye to all we say.

Let them bathe in their sorrow, it is fruitless trying to convince them otherwise.

and it is unconceivable how some people fall to sleep staring at their Jim Irsay Fatheads. when he was CEO during the imcomplete failure of those common sense and business factors you mentioned that have put us in a bad situation.

He was CEO during that time and was completely unaware of building in cycles until Peyton got hurt.

I can't believe you didn't tell him prior to 2011!

  11. He's not the CEO he's the owner and no matter how much people might not like what he did he's not getting fired. He fired the guy who was the CEO of the Colts. If we are going to compare this to a work place Irsay is the board of directors or a small business owner (which is closer to what Irsay realy is) who makes the call to fire the CEO or Preisdent (which is why some NFL GMs are called Preisdent of Football Operations). At some point someone is in charge and it doesn't matter how bad of a job they do they aren't going to get fired.

With that said Irsay has not done a bad job since he took over being the guy in charge you tried that arguement yesterday and had it quickly pointed out to you that since he's been the owner of the team the Colts have been in the playoffs 13 of those 17 years and that included going to the playoffs two of the three years he owned the team without Peyton Manning. He's done a very good job as the owner of the team. He wants to win and has spent a lot of money to win. He's not running the team just to turn a profit and not caring about winning and other than really big calls like firing the Polians, Tobin, the head coach, or Peyton he's stayed out of the football side of things and let his GM's run the show. That's what you want the owner to do.

The only way you can pant Irsay as a bad owner is if you only look at the bad things that have happened (which happen to everyone at some point I don't care how good you are at something) and ignore the good things which is what you tried to do yesterday when you said "well outside of the Manning years how has he done as a owner?". Then it became trying to look at him as the GM of the team and not his owner days. That's why he stopped being the GM when he took over as owner he knew he wasn't good at it but his dad stuck with him because he was his son and he didn't the final call on things like he does as owner. Irsay is horriable GM but he's proven to be a very good owner.

Part of being a good owner of something is knowing when you have to make the hard call on something and it's time to move on. That window that people have been saying has been closing for about five to six years finally closed. Irsay saw that and realized it was time to move on no matter how much it hurts to do so. Like I heard Clayton say on the radio last week. This was coming in a couple of years even if the Colts did try to make another run with Peyton and the gang (which the cap wouldn't have alloud but that's besides the point right now) these guys were getting older and in a couple of years were going to be well past their prime and you we were going to have to rebuild then regardless. Players don't play forever. At least doing it now we have what is supposed to be a very good peace to do it around in Andrew Luck and pretty sold core on defense. Who knows if we waited a few years what we would have had to build around.

It hurts I don't like it but it's a smart business decision to do what Irsay did. Like I said I've now seen the Colts give away my favorite player four times. I've learned there is always another one. That's life as a sports fan of a team. Players change. It's a fact of life and when it happens no one likes it. That's the ugly business side of things NO ONE likes which is why it's called the ugly business side because it makes you do things you don't want to do.

the website you are currently on has always listed him as CEO

  12. So something I've seen quite a few times posted is that no free agents are willing to come here for (insert x reason) using revolving around some complaint about loyalty or because the team isn't going to be good ect.

Ok, that's emotion talking. All 32 teams in the league have at some point or another cut, not re-signed, or traded players on their team. It's part of professional football. Yes, even fan favorites and long time players. It happens.

You know what will prevent players from signing here? Not having any money to pay them. Which until we made all the cuts we made last friday was precisely the situation we were in.

Do you like free agency? I personally hope they don't spend a lot of money on free agents. It's easy to get into an overpriced situation.

Example, Jacksonville signed Session and Polznoucy? at LB. You could argue that those players are overpiced or sidney rice in seattle.

Hopefully we have a plan to build with draft and just add some FA to fill small gaps.
