I've always liked CFN (formerly www.CollegeFootballNews.com) previews of each team, from year to year. Detailed but also not too difficult to understand for the average fan.
e.g. http://cfn.scout.com/2/1084517.html
If the Colts had their preview...here's what I can see.
10 best players -----
1. Andrew Luck
2. Vontae Davis (Robert Mathis out for season)
3. TY Hilton
4. Dwayne Allen
5. Reggie Wayne
6. Hakeem Nicks
7. Arthur Jones
8. Jerrell Freeman
9. Ahmad Bradshaw
10. Gosder Cherilis
Offense -----
Star of the offense: Andrew Luck
Playwer who has to step up and become a star: Trent Richardson
Unsung star on the rise: TY Hilton
3 pro-bowl candidates: Andrew Luck, TY Hilton, Reggie Wayne
Strengths: QB, WRs, TEs
Weaknesses: Offensive Line
Defense-----
Star of the defense: Vontae Davis (Robert Mathis before injury)
Playwer who has to step up and become a star: Bjoern Werner
Unsung star on the rise: Arthur Jones
3 pro-bowl candidates: Vontae Davis, Arthur Jones, Jerrell Freeman
Strengths: Defensive line, ILBs
Weaknesses: Pass rush, safety
I think I mostly agree, though I'd replace Jones with Redding on the best players list, and Jones with Chapman for unsung stars on the rise. Not hating on Jones, he's a known quality vet. But Redding is a team leader and occasional brings badly needed pressures on the qb. Chapman is definitely unsung and could anchor the run defense this year.

I hear nothing but doubt since Mathis injury. Blaming on Trich, offensive line, running game, fullback, defense...i mean seriously? Its only week 1 and the players did a very good job getting back into the game and shutting down the best QB in the league in the second half. Week 1 is never the best game to judge a team.
But the note Mathis left sounds like he know about the injury for a while, especially for only being suspended for 4 games. He did tweet out that he has full confidence in Werner as a starter. Definitely sounded like he knew...
You cant depend on one player for the defense to reach its full potential. Lets say he did lead us to the Super Bowl and the team finds a way to stop Mathis so the rest of the defense panics because they dont know what to do without him?
With no new moves since his IR announcement, im sure Grigson has a plan and the best thing the organization needs is support from their Colts fans whether they are 12-4 or 2-14 (like in 2011).
So don't panic for the littlest things and let's celebrate Andrew Lucks birthday with a win on Monday! Sorry for the rant but just wanna see more support for the team.
Same thing happened when we lost to Miami last year. Everyone was sooooo sure we would be lucky to go 8-8. Then we promptly went out and beat the 9ers, Seahawks, and Broncos.
Not saying the road to the AFC South title is a done deal, but people should show a bit more intestinal fortitude given this teams recent history.

What a terrible man...kissing his son like that. Somebody should report him.
I suppose at some point Jeffrey Dahmer kissed his mother. That must make him a swell guy.

The play at full speed definitely puts the play in better perspective ... it is a failed play either route ... although I still think he gets back to the line of scrimmage (maybe a yard) if he immediately goes outside instead of the split second pause to consider the middle. I admit it definitely is not one of his "head scratcher" decisions it appeared to be at first.
Cool. I don't doubt or deny that he picks the wrong hole sometimes. It just didn't seem clear that this was one of those times.
-
The outside may have resulted in a similar result, but Trent had a much better chance of succeeding going outside ... going outside he benefits from making the LB take an angle (that may be a bad one) which is more likely to result in a missed or broken tackle, Hugh Thornton locked with his man creates a barrier that will prevent an immediate tackle if he runs to the outside, There is also a chance Allen will get chance to block the LB depending on how Trents angle stretches the play.
Taking the inside is almost guaranteed to fail, it gives the LB a perfect straight on tackle.
A smart running back would have went outside on that play. Trent makes horrible choices like this frequently.
Just curious, but at what angle does Trent receive the hand off. It looks as though he needs to approach the line of scrimmage to receive the ball. Another reason why two frames of a play are not convincing.
-
Look at the play? Look @ Trent's position when getting the handoff and look where the Lb is. Now look at his body once taking the handoff. As soon as he got the handoff, a competent back would see all that room on the right. Trent basically freezes and waits for the LB. His vision and instincts are horrible. And he lacks the quickness to make up for it.
Its a reason The Browns traded a top 5 pick 1 yr into his career. We got fleeced
pfft. Seriously? What a perfect catch 22- Trent breaks outside, unblocked linebacker still makes the tackle (remember, he's a living breathing nfl linebacker not a slot car predetermined to assume a position) and you guys circle the hole the linebacker vacated to make the tackle.
-
Are you sure the play was designed to leave an unblocked linebacker in the hole while Allen goes to the sideline for a pepsi?
-
That's amazing. If he hasn't broken all them tackles he would have had a -2.9 ypc. I take it all back the guys a beast.
You're close to an epiphany here. By your own (made up, shaky, gibberish) math he would be met 2.9 yards deep in his own backfield on average before breaking a tackle. So (using your fake numbers) Trent produced+5.8 yards of offense per carry last year. Awesome!

I don't understand how Miami has 5 new offensive linemen and put 190+ rushing yards on NE. They sure didn't need time to "gel". That's with satele at C who everyone here threw under the bus and destroyed. It's looking more like coaching and scheme to me.
I think Satele was "just a guy", let down by being surrounded by terrible play at guard for most of his time here.

And exactly what pro-bowl OLB is walking said streets and is available?
I hear Cato June is still available.
-
Lol. I expect we'll reach consensus on this topic sometime before trich retires.

You know what, I hope that if finally does outperform those guys. But, when you use a first round pick on a RB in this league, which is rare these days he better be a difference maker. The NFL has changed and there are very few difference makers at RB in the NFL now. So, guys that produce even better than what Richardson has are easy to find. He better start showing he's worth it and soon.
Better production on other teams, sure. I'm not sure anyone short of Shady or Barry Sanders in his prime could've been consistently productive behind this line last year. Hoping we see some growth in the interior line this year when Mewhort, Holmes, and Thornton all play together. But not betting on it.
-
You lose the pick, but it isn't like he is making a ton of cash because he is still under his rookie contract. If things don't work out you chalk it up to a learning experience. I still don't think it was a bad move, and Trent knows he needs to prove his worth... So next we I look to see him run with reckless abandon with Bradshaw as the receiving back. Provided we don't have to play from behind then you get what we saw Sunday.
And it's not like we gave up the third overall pick for him. We "drafted" him slightly higher then Addai and Brown. He still has every opportunity to outperform them both.
-
Not a bad article, but making a bunch of weak excuses for why the defense was successful in the second half is no better then making excuses for being eviscerated in the first half.
-
Huh. Kinda ignored this thread figured it was a gag.
Huh.

I would argue that Richardson is also one of the better blocking and receiving Backs in the NFL alongside Bradshaw. If Hamilton was being creative, He should have a 3 WR set with Luck in the Shotgun with Richardson and Bradshaw on either side to him, gives Hamilton the option to handoff to either back and have the other one block.
I agree about Richardson but it still makes sense, at least this early in the season, to go with the most proven player for the situation.
Both Bradshaw and Richardson in the same backfield sounds like a terrific idea, much better then the traditional fullbacks they've been trying. I'd love to see that.
-
sorry i meant snaps overall, Bradshaw saw more plays than T-Rich.
I think that's what we should expect all season when we're in throw first mode. Bradshaw is unrivaled in pass protection and he's a pretty good receiver too.
Bradshaw played the 2 minute drill vs the Saints in preseason game 3 as well.
-
Wow just wow.
If we find out Goodell saw that and still only gave him two games Goodell needs to be forced out. I know he's saying they didn't see it but I am not sure I buy that. If he can Goodell needs to reopen this and give him a proper suspension.
I feel the same about the legal system but this isn't the forum for that.
Yeah. Kinda gave Goodell a pass, figured he wouldn't have the clout to get it past the NFLPA. But how/why would they have defended Rice given that level of brutality? Truly shocking.

The running game was pretty irrelevant in the Broncos game. That said, they both did an excellent job picking up the blitz. No surprise from Bradshaw, who is consistently one of the best in the league, but Trich seems to have improved in this area as well. He always had the build for it, but last night he was in the right position as well.
I found myself wishing we'd run the ball more last night, especially in short yardage situations. Never thought I'd be saying that about a Pep Hamilton offense.
-
He always play well against Tom Brady.
-
The corners played fine against the best passing attack in the league. Our ILBs got exploited in terrible matchups against Thomas. The safeties were exposed a bit. But the defense was pretty terrific in the second half. The offense had ample opportunities to mount a comeback.
-
Good game. Nice job fighting back.

I think our defense is already looking better then any Manning had. We're a pass rusher or two away from being legit, 3 years removed from a total rebuild.
I love that we have Luck, he's clutch and has brought this team back many times, but he's still very streaky. He's a big reason why we win games, but he's not carrying this team the way Manning did.
