In general, I think Colts fans overrate New England way too much cause of the Manning years and cause of how they've been able to handily whoops us in the toothless Luck years. But we're past that. I can see this team beating anyone.

lmao i used to think we’d beat the pats those times too and what’s our record vs them since manning left? we can always See our team winning vs them but it hasn’t happened that being said we have to beat them in order to actually make this a rivalry again haha

The Colts certainly give up chunk plays underneath when running the soft zone.  That leads to long drives where opposing teams are forced to sustain drives without committing penalties or turnovers; it forces them to convert on 3rd down.

Press man makes you vulnerable to the 1 or 2-play drive where a 75-yard TD goes over the top of your defense.  A long run can also hit if someone fits a gap incorrectly.

i agree it makes you more vulnerable but to say to a degree for example if we had Hooker back there  he’d be shutting down least one half of the field over the top  that’s what he’s here for (even tho he isn’t right now haha ) But it just always seems as if when we play zone it’s never aggressive like some exotic zone blitz it’s basic and everyone’s already backed far off every receiver but whenever we play man we’re in their face the linebackers are at least bluffing if not are blitzing and contesting not allowing free release we do this better than we do in zone is all i’m saying id risk that vs most of the teams left on our schedule until we reach the likes of brady’s offense

You dont show eveything in the first few games. Its a marathon not a race. If we play all our cards early every DC will know how to beat us. Andy Reid was very notorious for along time doing that. He would go hard and would be unbeatable until around week 7 or 8 then teams would figure him out. Hes been able to get away with it the past 2 years because how magical Mahomes is, but its not a good strategy.

i’d agree with this but you can’t say “we can’t show everything” when we were being handled “not showing” this aggressiveness..i honestly think Eberflus was doing doing exactly what most Dcs Do force their playing style and not make your scheme match your talent..we have corners who thrive in Man coverage yet we had them playing zone (along with rookie linebackers) and quite frankly they struggled badly..Raiders game showed how bad zone was when Carr picked apart our defense with nobodies accurately and we allowed free release quite often..we swap to man  press coverage for the most explosive team in the  nfl and shut them down with BACKUPS i don’t think he was hiding anything his scheme is originally Vanilla but maybe he’s finally noticed he can create pressure lining guys up Man vs Man i really don’t think our corners have that read react ability for zone and neither do our linebackers

  4. whole dline would look nice if we played Man Coverage and allowed the pass rush to get there besides that LA game where rock was somehow matched up with K.Allen in man coverage is a huge mismatch he was best route runner last year lol next few teams we play we should definitely be able to press and cover them at the line and allow for the pass rush to get there..i swear if we don’t sack watson when we come back i’m gonna cry

And keep the running backs from roving over the middle which has been killing us for years

honestly they need to keep our linebackers out of coverage haha  at least not zone because boy we get blown off the ball playing zone and thrown on..we def play less physical defensively in Zone than we do Man i get we can’t play it 90% but you have to look at certain teams and know which teams require you to play that way until they throw Crossing routes and bunch formations into play

This approach probably caught the Chiefs off guard.  I don't think the Colts will be able to rely on this man-heavy approach exclusively going forward (Colts don't have the personnel, and it makes the defense more susceptible to the big play), but it was a very nice change of pace that gives future opponents something to mull over.

This more aggressive approach certainly helped the pass rush (and vice versa).

we give up way more playing zone 19 yards off allowing people to run freely uncontested..and we actually HAVE the corners for Man coverage we just refused to use Man because our DC is trying to make this cover 2 stuff work regardless if our players aren’t reading and reacting well..just watch anytime we play man and give up something big it’s either due to pass rush not getting there  or a Tight End running freely down field

Here's the biggest takeaway - how about - play more man coverage? This is the game we've played most man coverage since Reich/Eberflus became coaches for the Colts.

We played OVER 60(SIXTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) % of defensive snaps in man yesterday.

    OVER SIXTY %!

    Let that one sink in...

I know part of it is probably Mahomes getting injured. But even before he got injured we were doing much better than expected.

I know part of it is due to the huge surprise it must have been for the Chiefs that this is how we were playing them and teams in the future might adjust... but STILL... this is SOOOO MUCH BETTER than those soft zones. Just mix it up enough to put the doubt in the opposing QB's head. Don't give him everything presnap. Don't give him the short to intermediate zones wide open on every snap.

I really do hope Eberflus looks at this game and realizes that this is a much better approach not only against this team but against most.

    love this post!

O am wondering if our issues playing more man coverage is due to the lbers and somewhat the dl.... Not our dbs

i hope it’s because they finally realized we have  the talent to play press man coverage and send these speedy linebackers on blitz  idk how to spell his last name but Bobby was Swift on his feet in coverage

  9. if only Jacoby would trust em he’s been open weekly and i hate how he’s used for “One” go route per game when every time we use him deep he gets a damn penalty because no1 can keep up

In the first half, Kelce had the ball stripped twice immediately upon catching it, causing incompletions.  I wasn't watching Quincy specifically, but I'm hoping that was him both times.

kelce played like trash lol but he was open anytime we played zone or if the Dline  didn’t Contain Mahomes and he threw those lovely side arm passes lol

  11. i love how we act as if Rock isn’t flagged just as much this year as wilson both are handsy physical corners.. the biggest issue is they’ve been in zone leaving guys wide open..but when Manned up they are both always contesting (wilson just doesn’t turn sometimes but always in great positions) i love the fact both are willing to TACKLE

  12. i agree on mack dancing too much granted he was easily breaking their tackles when he did...if he just ran full speed through the whole a couple times he would’ve been gone they didn’t want to take on Kelly Ac and Nelson in the trenches

He didn’t get spanked, and he didn’t give up a TD. At this point we take it one step at a time with him, and this one was, at the least, not a negative step.

It could have been worse. It could have been much, much worse.

wilson played well when in Man coverage shadowing  when we go zone all our corners tend to mess up even Rock was being called for being handsy but overall man on man we played physical but i swear every time we went zone someone was wide open down the field haha
