In a vacuum, yes.  But they have Bosa, a premier player in a position that's actually premier.  The other three can generally be replaced/churned fairly often.

The world we live in today, everyone in every industry is expendable. So I get your point. That said, there are certainly advantages to retaining top end talent through their prime.

At the end of the day, Buck will likely end up going down as one of my favorite Colts. I just really like the guy. I enjoy having players who I like on the squad. It enhances the whole experience of being a fan.

The older I get, the more I find myself caring less and less about the “advanced metrics” of life. Sometimes we forget that it all exists for our own enjoyment. Could we turn and churn entire rosters to keep the average age down and play moneyball every year, sure. For me, though, I like rooting for the individuals who we invest our emotions in just as much as the team as a whole.

I appreciate efficiency and I appreciate effectiveness, whether it’s a company I work for or a team I cheer for. But I refuse to lose sight of what really matters. To me, that is enjoying life and stopping to appreciate the things that make it so great.

Buckner is still under contract through this season, that takes him through his prime. So, we have him in 2024 anyway. He turns 30 this week.  If he has a good season this year, Ballard may bring him back for 2 more seasons or so is my guess?

I agree with you. Personally, he is a player I am fine riding with until the wheels fall off or he hangs it up. My point was more or less, now that the dust has settled, we definitely “won” that trade.

We still have Buck playing at a high level. San Fran now has no Buckners, no Armsteads, and no Kinlaws.

Starting to think with those AAV numbers for Fuller that this extension might be tough to work out?

Probably trying to get him in at $15m or so, and he's like tag is this much.

    Maybe like a 4yr $64m deal? $17m AAV?

That sounds reasonable to me, but I am the furthest thing from a cap guru there is. I just wait for Superman and others like yourself to break this all down lol. Thank you for your service!

Thanks. Just to follow up on your post,..

I disagree with your forgone conclusion that everyone knows Sam not an NLF QB.

As a matter of fact, Sam is indeed an NFL QB. And probably will be for some time forward.

I would like to be stoked too. But am having a bit of trouble with that, seeing as our FO is once again re-signing all the same players we've had for the past few years, and It's hard for me to see us improving, without making any changes to fill the holes.

I know it is still early, but up to this point, it's looking like another repeat of 2023... (or maybe worse?) While watching all three of our division rivals improve their rosters significantly.

However, I do believe we still have a bit of cap space? and perhaps another signing or two should be coming down the pike?

And of course the draft is super important for this teams success in 2024. Just hoping the FO can make the most of these opportunities.

What I like about this forum is the freedom to talk, whether positive or negative, about all aspects of the Colts franchise.

But as for the joyful vibe... My vibe is always dictated by the teams performance, and the FO making the right moves and decisions.

And you are right... We do deserve it.,

Your passion is infectious in the best kind of way! I love seeing spirited debate on this forum.

That said, I simply can’t engage with a substantial portion of your response. I respect your opinion, and you absolutely have a right to it! I just don’t share it. Cheers to the draft though. I absolutely agree this will be a great opportunity to see how this team takes shape.

I actually like the direction we are starting to head. Call me a homer, but I’m actually pretty optimistic. Of course, I could be wrong. But I am just enjoying feeling pretty good about our team. I would love to share a little bit of this feeling with you, bro. Maybe I’m just naïve, but I enjoy feeling this way about the upcoming season. Even if they let me down next year, I appreciate feeling pretty good about the team AND the depth at the moment.

We have plenty of needs that need to be addressed. So does every other team… To me, personally, this is what makes the NFL so fun. The salary cap ensures parity to a certain extent. Roster size plays a role. You can’t be successful allocating 90% of an annual budget to 3 players like the NBA. Sometimes the depth contracts get signed first (not sexy contracts, I agree), and then the impact players sign later (much more exciting, I agree). Other seasons, the inverse is true.

I suppose my biggest ask of you, just for posterity and culture on the forum purposes, is can we not treat every new media bit as a reason to cause division? Most of us just want to hear other people’s thoughts on the latest signings or losses, but without someone needing to win. We just want to talk. We are all passionate, we all have different emotions linked to our varying levels of Colt’s fandom. I’m just asking that we wait for the season to start to make it a debate instead of a conversation.

My final statement is that I hear you. I believe many of us here, hear you. Your thoughts and feelings are 100% valid. None of us have a crystal ball, none of us know if AR will eclipse Mahomes or never finish a season. That’s why it’s a forum. It’s all speculation. None of us are omniscient… But please, let this be a place of fun, recreation, decompression, and conversation. Let’s just talk. I promise I’m here to listen.

We can all slide over a seat and get on the same side of the table. We are all in this together, regardless of our opinions. Much love and respect…

I don't think this is going to happen. I think it's all smoke and mirrors, somebody trying to drive up the Chiefs price, and maybe Sneed's price as well, by using the Colts as the team waiting in the wings to swoop in and make the the deal happen. That's not like Ballard, or the Colts. They move in silence, and stuff like this usually doesn't come out until it's crossing the finish line. It's also not like Ballard to spend big money on a corner, particularly with Gus Bradley running the defense.

But if -- IF -- Ballard pulls this off, or something similar, I'll soften some of my criticism from the last couple days. I will still question the decision to spend money on run stoppers in the defensive front, and I think it's hard to cover the middle of the field with Franklin playing 1,000 snaps, but I will appreciate the decision to attack the secondary aggressively. If they also come away with an upgrade at safety, I'll be even more appreciative.

This is the most logical take. If we were really in the final stages of negotiations with either of the free agents, I can’t imagine our players would interfere with that on social media for the sake of both parties. To me, it means 1 of 2 things. Either a deal is already done, or it ain’t getting done…

It takes a lot of effort and focus to be that eloquent. I don't blame him for reserving his energy.

You are even more astute than I realized. Life is all about energy transfer. We ride the highs as long as we can, and we weather the lows until we rip the next wave! Energy is our most overlooked commodity. I have to reserve a lot of it on the forum because I use it all up on game day lol.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say rather we agree or not post more!

I try, I really do. In fairness, I’m running around all day with a very irregular sales schedule. So I have the chance to catch up on threads for minutes at a glance throughout the day.

By the time I get home from an appointment, I usually just try to catch up on all the threads. That isn’t a short task on here lmao  When I’m all caught up, I’m usually just too exhausted to actually say anything. Besides, there are some very intelligent and experienced minds on this forum. Oftentimes, I find that any contribution I would have made was already said by someone else.

So naturally, I fulfill my civic forum duty, and I react to the post. Plus, I’m adhd and forget lol.

Well. I was just saying, I would have liked for Sam to have gotten a chance. And if he stunk, then go with the rookie QB, or vice versa. The Flacco signing is the same thing again. Like Minshew was.

Kind sir, I am a loooooooonnngggg time lurker, rare poster. The “always here, but nobody knows it” type.

Reading your posts, I ran through a range of thoughts on how to proceed. To be clear, this entire post is genuine and not sarcastic.

I am electing not to engage with the specific content of your posts, as we have diverse view points that I don’t anticipate finding a ton of middle ground on. Initially, I had some strongly opinionated responses. I ran through scenarios of how I thought they would be received by you and the forum in my head. Then I had an epiphany. I sat back and thought to myself, “Golly, this is a very passionate Colts fan! He maintains the energy to post very consistently to advocate for his view point. I can’t even muster the energy for that myself most of the time.” And for that I salute you. I respect your passion tremendously.

Without risking a debate, I just want to acknowledge that many here do not believe Sam Ehlinger to be an NFL caliber QB. I’m asking you to just consider something. We all love the guy. He’s a nice guy with a good story out of Texas. Perhaps every GM in the NFL knows that he’s not an NFL quarterback. But he’s a good camp body who brings consistency with the playbook and familiarity with the system. I sort of think of him like I do Scott Tolzien, who I actually had a safety on in HS when he played for Fremd. I rooted for him when he played for the Colts, and I supported him when he played for other teams as a back up, but everybody knew he wasn’t an NFL quarterback… He didn’t need more playtime to confirm what most already knew. Sam Ehlinger is of the same ilk.

To present a counterpoint, Sam has been afforded a generous luxury of being on an NFL roster for more time than he probably should have. For context, he will make $1,055,000 in 2024 to go through the motions. He has severe limitations in his chosen profession, but his hard work and grit will earn him a salary that exceeds what 99.99% of us on this forum will make this year. Congrats to Sam. That is his superbowl, and he won!

But with all due respect, can we move past arguing over backup/ third string QB’s and moves that are already done, and start to enjoy the excitement of this actually being a year that our FO seems to be embracing as a contender season? This free agency period is starting to build some excitement for the first time in a little while! Can we create some type of vibe on the forum this off season that allows us all to enjoy ourselves for once? We deserve it lol.

I am stoked for what is to come. Regardless of how this season plays out, I am freaking excited to have the opportunity to be excited for the Colts in mid March for the first time in a long time! And I LOVE having the opportunity to look forward to a season again!

  9. I have been thinking about this question for a while now. On paper, yes, I do think this puts Mahomes in front of Peyton.

That said, I think historical context plays a huge role. In a nut shell, Peyton changed the game, Mahomes evolved it. Peyton forever altered the way the QB position was played. He showed how much more of a coach/playcaller the QB position could be. Mahomes took it to the next level by showing that you don’t necessarily need to compromise between an athletic QB and a passing QB.

There are levels to this game, as there are in anything else in life. As the game, and specifically the position evolves, and as rules continue to evolve to favor offense in general, the league is primed to see breakout performers at every offensive position early in their careers over the next couple decades. Records eventually topple.

But at the end of the day, until the end of time, Peyton belongs in every conversation involving football and the evolution of the game, forever. He is an architect of the game. I accept that he isn’t the best to ever do it, but my god, did I love watching him work. It no longer matters where he ultimately ends up on the all time rankings.
