  1. This team far exceeded everyone's expectations. This team has had so many injuries that it's ridiculous. I don't think any other team could have overcome that many injuries. 2 best running backs, best tight end, best wide receiver, starting O-lineman, not to mention all the injuries we had to deal with in the secondary. Bottom line is this team improved from last year and with all the circumstances, that's pretty amazing. Pep Hamilton struggled, but made some adjustments with the offense and it was very effective. And enough of calling out luck... We have such high expectations for him, and that's not really fair. I think we forget that he's only a second year qb. This team has nowhere to go but up. We beat the nfl's best this season without a lot of our best players, and THAT should scare people.

    oh the complacency...

  2. 2013 was a good year in the history of the Indianapolis Colts. Some would even say great- but the truth is this, a group of youngsters that overcame adversity and overachieved despite the administrators of the team hindering them at every turn. The Indianapolis Colts began the 2013 season by acquiring a handful and a half of free agent players. Some were obvious fits for the scheme, such as LaRon Landry and Ahmad Bradshaw however, the former Executive of the Year seemed to whiff on some of the intermediate talent that he had acquired. Questions were raised about the acquisitions of Lawrence Sidbury and the insane contract given to Erik Walden. Most Colts fans and personnel were spoiled by the 2012 season, one where every Draft Pick and acquisition seemed to work for the Indianapolis Colts, however in 2013, that would be a different story all-together.

The downhill trend began with the 24th pick of the 2013 NFL Draft Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano thought it best to draft Bjoern Werner, a Defensive End from Florida State and convert him to an outside linebacker- with names like Kiko Alonso and Alec Ogletree (Both ILBs, but true linebackers) still on the draft board. The Colts then went on to draft two linemen on the offensive side, one on the defensive, a safety, a runningback and a tight end through the last six rounds of the draft. Of the six drafted players- zero started the season. One lineman (Hugh Thornton) earned a starting position due to injury, Werner was a rotational OLB, Khaled Holmes was (for some reason) AWOL the entire season. Boyett- the safety had off-the-field issues which led to him being released from the team. The defensive lineman, Montori Hughes ended the season with the Colts, albeit on injured reserve and the running back, Kerwynn Williams ended up bouncing on and off of the practice squad before the San Diego Chargers signed him.

While the free agent additions of LaRon Landry, Ahmad Bradshaw and Gosder Cherilus ended up ok, the absolute horrendous acquisitions of Erik Walden, Lawrence Sidbury, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Kelvin Sheppard drained cap money that could have been used elsewhere and on more productive players.

    Then the season began-

Three weeks into the NFL season, Vick Ballard, Ahmad Bradshaw, Donald Thomas, and Dwayne Allen's seasons all ended. Ryan Grigson decided to counteract these injuries by swapping out his 1st round pick for Trent Richardson- a Running back selected two spots behind Andrew Luck in the 2012 NFL Draft, and the apparent savior to the Indianapolis Colts. His impact was not felt, and he was relegated to a #2 RB spot.

Here's looking to 2014, a season that will most likely begin with Samson Satele still in the offensive line works, two consecutive wasted 1st Round Picks, and another disappointing draft for the Indianapolis Colts. Don't worry though, Grigson's gotta get something right sometime? He WAS Executive of the Year last year.

I said all this 8 months ago and got hammered.  The coaches and execs are terrible.  The Colts have won over the years despite bad coaches but it has caught up with them against elite leadership time and time again.

  3. lol, you may want to go and read his other topics also before you jump to conclusions!

yes in one them I said Manning wasn't a good playoff quarterback and I was glad to have the new blood Luck on board and I got blasted mercilessly.  I'm pure evil!  In the long run the Colts will be better off with Luck and this draft wasn't that good.  No big deal it just wasn't.  Grigson made a number of puzzling moves between free agency and the draft and many can see that pretty clearly.

  4. Must be when it came time for the Colts to select a player , there was not a CB that Grigson had rated as highly as you did. Must also be that throughout the draft , Grigson did not see a CB that he thought was worth traded up or down to get . That meaning matching the value of the pick to the value of the player.

    Hense no CB selected...

Plus they selected Vontae Davis in the 2nd round.  Not bad.

  5. So what team do you exactly root for? Cause it is apparent, It isn't the colts! After their first pick you gave them a F- now you are looking for any artical that gives it a bad grade, why not show the other grades that gave us B's even a few gave us A. Do us all a favor and hit the road already... You are nothing but a Troll

Been a troll since 1984! Problem is I hate to see weird decisions by management mess up a good thing.  I've honestly seen maybe 1 out of every 10 grades better than a B-.  It really wasn't a very good draft at least not initially but could turn out ok in a few years.  I do doubt it though.  Frustrating and puzzling to say the least.

  6. Wanted to quote you so you knew where this thread had been moved to. Any new draft specific threads should be started in the draft forum. Thank you for your help.

Thanks and sorry about that.  This draft has the feel of one where the players are so unflashy it turns out great. It's up to the coaches to make the unflashy flashy.  Pats have been doing it for over a decade.

  7. Overview: Keep in mind Colts GM Ryan Grigson also surrendered a 2014 fourth-round pick in the trade up for Hughes early in round five. I'm surprised Grigson mortgaged part of his future for a small-schooler with a checkered character background. Not only is Werner an odd fit for Chuck Pagano's 3-4 defense, but his tendency to give up on plays after initially being blocked was disconcerting on game film. Contrary to popular belief – which may be racially driven -- the player's motor is an issue. I liked the Thornton pick, but not Holmes. I didn't love many of Grigson's free-agency moves or his draft as a whole, and this grade will be low. But the 2012 NFL Executive of the Year has earned every ounce of the benefit of the doubt. The Colts have a top-15 roster a year after going 2-14, thanks in large part to Grigson's scouting. He knows more than me.

    Grade: C-

  8. Enjoyed it more than last years. We really addressed our needs.

I'm sorry but just drafting players that play the position you need doesn't necessarily mean you addressed your needs.  Not to mention running back wasn't addressed and that was a huge need.

    C-

  9. Nope, but you never answered my question, are you an Expert in the NFL? No? Then stop acting like you know more then they do!!!!!

I'm absolutely not an "expert".  Some things you don't need to be an expert for though and this is one of them.

  10. It doesn't take a genius to know that with the 24th pick in the 1st round with impact players still out there at need positions you don't take a "motor" guy that runs like a truck for your pass rush hole.

    Griswold does it again.

  11. I was wondering are you an Expert in the NFL? Every expert that has talked about this pick  they love it, but you seem to know more then any of them...

I'm pretty sure many experts don't love that pick from what I've read.  Are you reading the Grigson Times.

  12. I still can't get over the fact that people never heard of him but him and Rhodes played for the same team.

Grigs will never be able to please this fanbase. Everyone cried about signing walden and how BADLY we needed a pass rusher. I guess that all went out the window when they saw Rhodes was still available.

I don't anyone disagrees with the fact that we need a pass rusher.  It's the bummy quality of pass rushers that we're bringing in that's annoying people.  You need a car so you get the Griswold famly truckster and say I took care of one of our needs?  Grigson is Griswold.

  13. If there was a grade of F- the Colts would get it.  You need a pass rusher yes but you also need a WR and a RB which had much better players available so you grab a mediocre player that doesn't fit into your scheme?  Grigson is green and it showed big time.  He probably ruined the team between free agency and that colossal dud.

  14. Perhaps...but wouldn't commonsense first call for an adequate stable of OLlinemen that can create running lanes for such a RB?

yes absolutely I really mean later in the draft where these Ridleys and Vereens seem to be lurking for the Pats but no other team for some reason.

  15. Absolutely no need to say sorry. I thought it was pretty clear that you and Gav were wrestling over the quality of the signings, and I was using that as a cheap shot at our nepotistic ex GM who I believe ruined the reputation of our franchise and the legacy of PM.

Not many people realize it but for all that "glory" over the past 14 years the Colts underachieved pretty drastically thanks to Tony Dungy and his lack of killer instinct.  Manning struggled in the playoffs too but without his great regular season play they don't make the playoff so he gets a pass.
