  1. He has made several attempts to address the weakest part of the team, the O-line. Regardless of the intent, it's the end-product that matters. So far, the product on the field is sub par and has been for a long time. Therefore, an argument can be made that he hasn't addressed this issue, despite his attempts.

You can also question his decisions. Cherilus had been dealing with injuries and inconsistency while with the Lions, as was Herremans who was IR'd by the Eagles in 2014.

"GM Ryan Grigson expressed some concern over his $34.5 million right tackle. "We really like Gos, but we have to see how he comes back," he said. Cherilus has a lengthy history of knee injuries that includes microfracture surgery. Cherilus proved to be a liability while playing hurt last season." -Rotoworld

These were bad decisions, regardless of the 1 good year we received from Cherilus.  Grigson decided to hold out hope that the current bunch would improve, so he stood pat this year. It doesn't seem like it was a good decision so far.

I never said the moves were good, my point is that moves were, at least, made. I would love a GM with a higher hit-rate. Equally, I would hate a GM that does not swing.

As for Cherilus, he was the most consistent lineman for the Lions the year before joining the Colts. My point was that he was not a 'diamond in the rough' as the OP claimed.

I have no problem with people dishing out criticism. My problem is when people dish out complete fallacies to substantiate their criticisms. It is a regular offense on this forum.

  2. I don't see how the highest paid RT of all time can be considered a 'diamond in the rough'. Cherilus had a great year before he joined the Colts.

Grigson has got it wrong with the o-line, with a combination of bad luck (injuries) and poor acquisitions.

However, this narrative that he continually refuses to address the issue is completely unsubstantiated.

  3. There has been plenty of be downtrodden about thus far this season. However, I thought I would make some general observations of how I see things. Nothing in-depth or ground-breaking, just some retaliation to these horrific topics that are infecting this forum on a regular basis.

Up until the end of the 3rd quarter tonight, the Colts looked terrible. The fourth quarter showed us what our offense is capable of, whilst the defense showed up in big moments.

    Here is my take...

    Offense

    - Our offensive line is clearly a mess, and the scheming has a lot to do with that... there is no cohesiveness, there is too much space to exploit. Our linemen are not necessarily getting run over, just run around. Something needs to happen.

    - The holding penalties are outrageous, but I see us fixing this. We used to be actually very disciplined in this regard.

    - Our run blocking was good, specifically out right. Hopefully we can make this a stable for the season.

    - As bad as our passing game was, we saw something completely different when adjustments were made in the fourth quarter. Andrew Luck is made for a hurry up offense. He is made for play action passing (when the running game is on song). When he get the ball out quickly, our offense looks great. I genuinely believe we will see more of this as the season progresses and players learn the offense. We have great short and intermediate pass catchers in Johnson, Allen, Fleener etc. We have the potential to be multiple and dynamic. The potential is there.

    - I was never a massive Hamilton fan, but he was okay last year. He called a brilliant fourth quarter... we need more of this and I think we will see it. The players are there. We can hide the o-line deficiencies with smart play calling.

    - Moncrief is good.

    - Gore is good.

    Defense

    - Our run defense wasn't as good as it has been, but it came up big in big moments. The rookies are ballers.

    - Our secondary will be great when we get Toler and Butler back. Lowry is a huge upgrade over Landry (Captain Obvious).

    - We had no pass rush for the majority of the game. BUT... we were without our two best pass rushers, for the majority of the game. Lets be realistic, we will not get pressure without Mathis and Cole out there. When we find ways to get them both integrated into the defense, especially on third and long, we will get plenty of pressure.

    - Freeman and Jackson made a few nice plays. Still want to see what Irving and Moore can bring to the table.

    Special Teams

    - Pat is a hero.

    Point is...

I am most certainly a realist, and if I thought there is little or no hope, I would say so. But, this talk of firing coaches now and tanking the season, genuinely baffles me. We have problems, we haven't been good. But if there is a time to have problems and not be good, it is now. We have loads of football players, and if we get them all healthy we don't have many weaknesses (bar o-line).

Our coaches go through phases of doing good things. They are smart enough guys to see what works, this team will be more cohesive and more dynamic is the season progresses. Our problems are fixable for the most part.  Maybe they are not the right guys going forward, but they are for now. Changing coaches at this stage does nothing to help our chances this season, we are all in, so we may as well accept that.

Personally, I am still very excited about this season.

  4. Yes it does. Peters has played 2 games. 2. Toler isn't about adding a player, it's about replacing the position for the team you traded from. They get a player in Toler who has mid round value, and a 1st rounder to try again. The goal is to convince KC that Toler can replace Peters and you can have a 1st back to use on another position. I also said you could add Butler, that way they are good in the short term and long term at CB, and it protects them in case they miss on the 1st rounder next year.

It really really really doesn't. And anyone who knows the NFL would agree in a heartbeat.

Two average CB's and a 1st does not equate to a star rookie CB with tons of pedigree. KC hit with their first, they do not undo that.

Lockdown corners are at a premium. You can find capable CB's all around the league, but the ability to make plays, shadow primary receivers or lockdown a side of the field is incredibly valuable. You only have 11 players on the field at a time, 3 of which are corners. Two average ones do not account for a potentially great one, not even when you throw in a first round pick.

This really should not even be an ongoing discussion, it really is that irrational.

  5. Fine, give them Toler and Butler and a 1st. I'm not sure why you brought a post from the beginning of the thread up when Superman got us all to quit arguing about it, you always seem to want to fight with someone.

I didn't read other posts, my browser is playing up.

I do love a good squabble though.

Again, you are missing the point. Adding more average players does not make such a trade viable.

  6. Judging by your recent posts, I think you are the one who doesn't get how it works.

    haha, how so?

I am simply pointing out that there is no way any team, ever, trades a 1st round pick that as an absolute hit thus far, for a future 1st round pick (probably late in the round) and an average starter.

First round draft picks are far from a sure bet. When you hit the jackpot, you don't cash in and try again. The concept is completely counter-productive.

You should know that, it is a basic concept.

  7. You still have offered no ideas or solutions how to improve... The only thing you fall back on is "well it's not that bad". I'd like to remind you that you are on a message board with Colts fans who are a little more passionate than your average couch potato. The purpose of this board is to discuss issues regarding "your team". Not to sit back and make fun of people who seem to know a little bit more about football and care a little bit more than you do. There is nothing wrong with being a ho-hum aww shucks type of fan, but don't call me out for discussing obvious glaring issues. If you want to hear something profound and original a sports forum isn't the place to be hanging around.

While I do not yell at the TV.. I rarely change my posture during games.. But I'm pretty sure you don't even watch them. We need fans that support the Colts no matter what, I get it..

The most important measure you can give a football team is the eye test, and it's clear your "academic view" of Colts has led you to a false sense of hope.

So far all I've got from you was 1.) ZZZZ 2.) Crap about how I'm just like any other fan after I requested that you refute any of my first post 3.) More crap about how I like to yell and throw things at my TV LOL

You sir are a piece of work. If you're not going to respond to any of my questions and instead make veiled personal attacks, do us all a favor and don't respond.

I am well aware of the purpose of this board, I have been coming here and to the previous board for ten years. And I have yet to miss a game in that period, or long before that.

My solutions are time, patience and progress.

We have serious issues with the interior line, but, we also had the second highest average snap-to-QB-release time in the league last year, and that trend has continued. This year, unlike the tail-end of last year, we have more options for the short and intermediate routes, but we have a very complex playbook and getting all of those pieces in place and gelling takes more than training camp. So in the interim, we have tried things on offense that haven't worked, but anyone who believes we are not going to get significantly better in that regard as the season goes on is simply foolish.

We are also giving away an inordinate amount of penalties on offense whilst 2 years ago we were the least penalized team in the league, this is something that will undoubtedly be corrected as it has cost us dearly in our opening two games.

Our run blocking has been very poor, and a lot of that is down to the interior line. Herremans is pathetic in that regard and Louis isn't much better. The coaching staff and GM have continually missed on the interior line, and I have never been a fan of the blocking schemes. However, no team is perfect... they have drafted and signed FA interior linemen and they simply haven't worked out due to injuries and poor play, that happens. It is not a reason to give up on the season.

Our big problems on defense last year were covering TE's (or anyone over the middle), pass rush without blitzing and run-stuffing against the Patriots (and only the Patriots). Grigson and the coaching staff seem to have made efforts the combat these deficiencies and I believe our pass rush will come good as the season progresses. Our run defense has been stout. Defending the middle of the field has been okay.

I don't buy into this rhetoric that the same problems have existed for four years, with the exception of the interior line, but efforts were made, they just did not work out.

We are a better team than we were last year, and to judge this team on the opening to games, in isolation and without perspective, is silly. Football is situational, a fix this week is not the fix next week. If you are going to try and fail, try and fail early in the season, then learn and evolve, a la 2014 Patriots

If we get all of our key players on the field, and on the same page, we will be fine. The coaching staff will make the necessary adjustments because they know they have to.

If changes need to happen, do it at the end of the year, when the season can be evaluated in a more holistic sense.

Until then, appreciate the fact that things can come together and there is still plenty of room for optimism.

Or else continue to wallow in the 'major league' fandom, but don't try to bring the rest of us down with you.

  8. *goes 0-8* C'mon guys! You can do it! Let's go team! We're gonna make the playoffs and win the Super Bowl and no one will get fired!

This is the NFL, not kindergarten tee ball. The team has the same thoughts as the majority of us right now, as shown through their interviews and whatnot. If you don't care about the success of the team, why bother being a fan of them?

When did we go 0-8? More hyperbole...

The issue here is that the vast majority of posters on this forum lack any degree of insight or perspective. We are 0-2, we are talented, we have problems to fix, as do many teams. Super Bowls are not automatic for any team, you need a degree of luck and as good as you may be, not executing on a certain play, or your opponent simply executing better on a certain play, can make all the difference. The margins are thin between winning and losing... we are much better than all of the histrionic posters on here would have you believe. We will get our act together and we will be fine. That is not to say we will win the Super Bowl, but neither will 30 other teams.

And to say I don't care about the success of the team is just silly. I simply find the concept of a pragmatic perspective being 'minor league' - compared to the 'true fans' who call for heads on a weekly basis - to be laughable.

  9. Refute away my man.. :D

There are also plenty of fans like you who seemingly root for mediocrity and are perfectly ok with getting drubbed by good competition on a regular basis just as long as we win our division and make it to the playoffs.

Your attitude is for the minor leagues.

    haha this is brilliant.

Do you measure yourself on your 'major league' attitude toward the sports teams you follow?

I can only apologize of my inability to demand sustained greatness from a group of people I have never, and will never meet. How dare I not panic when they lose games.

The passion you exhibit whilst shouting vigorously at your television screen is clearly testament to the man you are today.

  10. I've been watching our CBs closely for a while now, and it seems like Vontae is the only dependable CB we have (although he is elite). I have come to the conclusion that everyone else is expandable. We have seen this year that our 4 and 5 CBs are decent depth and we may have something in them. However, I do think that we can trade both Toler and Butler together and get a better CB.

So my question is, would you trade them both for a better CB or maybe Toler and a draft pick for a better CB? I was thinking something like Toler and a 2nd for Desmond Trufant from the Falcons, or just bite the bullet and trade Toler and a 1st for Marcus Peters. We could keep Butler in the slot in this scenario. I'm sure there is some way we could use these two and/or draft picks to get an elite no2 CB that is young and can give us a solid secondary for years to come. We can still have Jalil Brown and Djoun Smith and be good to go.

I don't think you understand how the NFL works.

  11. Zzzzz? Because you can't refute anything I said and that's your smart alec response? Waste of a post "Zzzzz" lol

Oh, I can refute plenty. I just tire of 'fans' like yourself who sensationalize and lack any real insight. Your post could have been a copy and paste of any one of the other 10,000 posts on this forum whenever the Colts go through a bad period... it gets old.

Then to top it all off, you want them to lose for a 'wake up call'... ha.

  12. Kirwan is right.  We are a spoiled fan base.  I don't think there's any issue with criticizing the Colts right now, they've played awful the past 2 games.  They were against pretty good teams, but we shot ourselves in the foot too many times.  I am on board with complaints about our lackluster play, but taking it overboard by saying Luck is regressing given his body of work the past 3 years because of 2 bad games is silly.  The Packers fanbase started last year 1-2 before Rodgers' responded to fans that sound not to dissimilar from Colts fans right now with infamous "Relax" quote - they went on to finish 11-2.  So Colts fans should just R-E-L-A-X.

    I loved that quote.

  13. 100%??  I agree people are over reacting, but there is definitely things to worry about if you're a true fan, not just somebody who watches highlights or likes the team just cause they're from Indiana.  This is the highest anticiapated season of the new resigme!!

Not only is Andrew Luck suppose to be the face of the NFL with MVP expectations, he has been one of the biggest reasons for losing against the Bills and the Jets.  I'm not taking ANYTHING away from the opponents because I think extremely high of those organizations, and believe there is a good chance the Pats won't win that division this year, due to the emergence of all MIA BUF and NYJ.  There is absolutely no excuse for the offense to look flat out TERRIBLE for the first 30 mins of each half and only making a ditch effort to put some points on the board to save grace late in the game.  3rd down conversions and turnovers are a huge problem.  Luck with 5 INT's in 2 games?  Plus what 4 other TO's with plenty more close encounters!

That's just the start of it.  What I'm mostly concerned about that we have an incompetent GM who has no clue whatsoever how to build an OL.  He thinks he does because he played OT in college.  He is insane if you have a QB like Andrew Luck and ask him to be superman for 4 straight seasons (dodging bullets) that come in the form of Pro Bowl caliber players, and still have the expectations that the Colts (still are) capable of.  I believe Albert Einstein said it best,  "Doing the same thing over again, and expecting different results"!  That's what Grigson has done, and that's insanity.  You can't put mediocre (at their very best) interior lineman to protect a franchise QB, and have a good run game!  I guess you can get it to work against mediocre teams, and make divisional opponents look bad, but this is the NFL, where the big boys come to play.  Amatures will be exposed!!  Luck has always over compensated for the lack of the OL play.  You can win many football games playing that way, not CHAMPIONSHIPS.  Hence why we don't beat elite teams, and hard nosed defenses!!  BTW don't get me started on the draft pick of Dorsett.  Great guy/player, who will prove to be worthy later, but terrible draft pick with our enormous depth, while letting the SAME problems exist.  I'm not going into ALL of his bad swing and a miss decisions, but because that would make this rant another 15 mins longer, but you get my point.

Furthermore, the tension between Pagano and Grigson is getting worse than it already was starting out 0-2.  If you want to go ahead and buy into their dismissals of the truth go ahead, but there is something wrong there.  Although the media may be blowing it out of proportion, that's not for me to decide however.  I don't think Pagano is blameless, because the team is obviously not prepared to start the season against top tiered defenses out of the gate.  I heard numerous headlines in pre season stating this is the best team put forward in the new era.  I certainly don't see it.

Not sure who is screwing up the protection packages, but I've seen Luck get knocked down, sacked, and hurried way too much, including multiple times a defender comes in untouched to lay the smack down!  Perhaps when he gets injured, Grigson will get his head out of his behind and put some more talent up front, or make coaching changes to coordinators who gameplan better.  Personally I think alot of it is on Luck himself, not reading the blitzes, audible out correctly, and holding onto the football to long (while making other terrible decisions).

The last thing I want to touch on is the injuries.  It is very bothersome to know 4th 5th and 6th string CB's are playing. As if Davis (arguably one of the best CB's in the NFL), getting a concussion wasn't enough, we also have Greg Toler out who has had quite the medical history start the season injured.  Not to mention D'joun Smith, turning out to be underwhelming to say the least, on the IR-Return list.  Plus Art Jones out for the year, TY getting banged up early along with DA.  I don't think the Colt's took their medicine (conditioning, or they have a bad training staff, that can reduce injuries), because they clearly have the sickness of the injury bug yet again.

Now that I've complained a little (or lot) let's look at the brightside.  We play in the weakest division in football (who we play the next 3 weeks), to help us bounce back.  Then we get another primetime game against the Patriots (which at the moment I am regret buying tix for) to hopefully get on track and show everybody it's not as bad as it seems.  There's no doubt in my mind that the Colts don't win the AFC South division, and at least get a wild card, but I have lost hope of the 13-3 or 12-4 with a 1st round bye, that I originally expected during pre season.  Andrew Luck has too much pride to not bounce back.  I believe he will see the offense we expected the next 3 games, but that means very little in the overall picture.  To get confidence back we need to go on AT LEAST a 4 game winning streak, but preferably keeping the train rolling through Denver would restore my original expectations!!

There are other good teams at 0-2, and other teams who suffered huge blows, so I'm not saying were toast yet, but clearly we are not favorites for SB contenders anymore.  Even if we don't win a SB this year I'm okay with that.  Taking a step back, ehh not so much.  What I'm definitely not OK with is repeating past mistakes!  I don't want Grigson to find the best skilled players around and diamonds in the rough/project players in hopes to fix a gaping hole on our OL.  Or having very inconsistent ILB's.  Not knowing who will show up and put on their uniform next Sunday, is also not cool by me.  I'm not saying scrap this or scrap that, fire Grigson and Pagano.  What I am saying is, somebody better take some leadership here and call out players when they don't do their damn job.  If they can't then they need replaced immediately and indefinitely.  Whether that be a coach or player.  This team needs to find a true identity, not just one that plays great against crappy to average teams, but coward away in the spotlight.

I think I speak for most fans here saying we are tired of all the nonsense, it's time for some change!  Peyton's era should've produced at least 2-3 Super Bowls, but we were outcoached and out played by the Patriots, and very disappointed with a loss to New Orleans to boot.  It looks like we are headed in the same direction with the Luck era.  Patriots will soon fade out, and we will be the little brother to Seattle Green Bay and a revamped Cowboys team.  I want to see the put up or shut up mentality.  The tenacity of a Ray Lewis/JJ Watt on the defense, and not just rely on Andrew Luck with (no disrespect to anybody in particular, but the positions in itself) overratted skilled positions, to put on a show and entertain.  Lighting up the scoreboard!  That just sets us fans up for having high expectations and a heartbreak when they fail, because that's not how you win Championships.  Look at the last decade or two of SB winners.  They didn't just get in a shootout and win, but they had a balanced aerial assault with a run game.  Solid secondary, with a good front 7.  That is balance, and THAT IS HOW YOU WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS!!  I know very little about football (take a shot if you want, I don't care), but even I can see if we don't make changes, Andrew Luck will either be injured often, or not live up to his full potential, which is taking a team to be perennial contenters for the Super Bowl, and winning 3-4 like Brady.  That's not going to happen with poor coaching/scheming and unbalanced football...

There you have it folks RANT OVER (probably won't reply much because this could go on for half of the season if I let it get out of control, so please don't take debate 101 with me this season) LOL had to add some comic relief to end it :)

    TL;DR.

Actually, I did read, and it was drivel.

    P.S. Einstein didn't say that.

  14. Yal are 100% incorrect.

We've seen this trend the first few years of Andrew Luck & Chuck Pagano's tenure. We were shut out of the endzone during the first half of the last two games. We've look absolutely pathetic over 10 times in the last 3 years and 2 weeks... That is about 20% of the games we play in, we look embarrassing. Whether it's getting blown out, or being held out of the endzone so long while digging such a vast hole for our offense that we look like a JV squad out there.

If you believe the OP you are in denial about the state of our team. We are way over-rated and I really hope this team finishes 2nd or worse in the AFC south, so that we can get the wake up call we need. Hopefully we can get a group of coaches in here that know what the heck they're doing.

    Zzzzz....

  15. NFL Issued its statement:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2564764-nfl-issues-statement-regarding-headset-issues-in-patriots-steelers-game

"In the first quarter of tonight's game, the Pittsburgh coaches experienced interference in their headsets caused by a stadium power infrastructure issue, which was exacerbated by the inclement weather. The coaches' communications equipment, including the headsets, is provided by the NFL for both clubs use on game day. Once the power issue was addressed, the equipment functioned properly with no additional issues."

I really didn't expect the Patriots to be behind this one, it just didn't make sense.  If you're going to screw the other side's headset up, the last thing you're going to do is let them hear conversations between your own coaches.

Makes perfect sense to me. The Patriots would have to scramble their own if the scrambled the Steelers, but they had time to prepare for that. And the Steelers' ability to hear what Patriots coaches are saying could massively benefit the Patriots, fi the coaches said the 'wrong' things.

Of course, I am speculating. But, then again, so are the Pats fans.
