  1. Depth in the Secondary is the biggest hole right now

Middle linebacker. We need a game changer there.

    These two.

Also, let's see how these guys play first before we anoint them all pro-bowlers.  I seem to remember last year, people were excitedly jumping up and down about the acquisitions of Justice, McGlynn, and Satele, declaring our O line fixed.  How did that turn out?  :D

  2. Big Ben 2012 in 13 games.

    284 for 449 63.3% 3265 yards, 26 TD's, 8 Ints

If you expand that out to 16 games based on his yards per game average over 13 games he's at 4018 yards.  Not to mention he would be at 32 TD's and maybe 2 more Int's.

Andrew Luck 2012 in 16 games

    339 of 627 54.1% 4374 yards, 23 TD's, 18 Ints

Big Ben is doing something beyond just relying on the defense.

Oh yeah and Indianapolis ranks 22nd in rush yards per game.  Steelers where 26th. . . so it's not like his offense had a huge running threat to back him up.

I don't think the guy has as much potential as Andrew.  When Andrew hit's his prime I'm sure he'll be a lot better then Big Ben.  But was Andrew better last season?  No I don't think so.

Not to mention Roethisberger was garnering serious consideration for MVP last year, along with Peterson and Manning....

  3. Around here? You do realize there are 2 different NFL.com Articles about this from seperate authors and more than one video on their website. Would be silly not to post it here. If anyone has thin skin it is the writers who have made this a headline more than once. I really don't see how this thread is whiny. It is linked to more than one NFL article and simply quotes those authors. If you dont want to discuss it than don't but don't come in here and call the people who do "whiny".

Well, posting about the poll and Arian's statement is one thing... which, of course, I'm totally fine with.. Assigning an ulterior motive to it (ie "Appears to me he went out of his way to make this argument.") is a completely different thing, and does bespeak of a bit of whininess.

You said it yourself: Bruce was just being honest. What, do you want him to lie about it? I'm pretty sure Luck doesn't want him to.

  4. There is a video as well as an article here are the main excerpt's,

When he was told Luck likely will be ranked ahead of Big Ben he said,

"That surprises me." "Andrew belongs on the list, but he's not at that stage yet. He's got to put a couple rings on his finger and a bunch more wins."

    Full article here:http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000202195/article/bruce-arians-dont-rank-andrew-luck-over-big-ben

Some here still hold a grudge against Arians, for numerous reasons. I am sure this will only fuel that. While I believe he was simply answering honestly, but he is a HC now and could have easily deflected this topic had he chosen. Appears to me he went out of his way to make this argument.

What do you guys think? A couple more rings seems like a stretch to me.

Wow... People are really thin-skinned around here...

First, the whiny "everyone thinks RG3/WIlson is better than Luck" thread, now this one...

Arians is correct. Luck agrees. End of thread.

Not everything is a grudge or personal vendetta, people....

  5. I actually wouldn't be surprised if we ended

I think ten wins is a reasonable estimate; if you want to call that a step back so be it. But our record was probably four games better than it really should have been last year. We got a lot of wins on smoke and mirrors, some good luck, and a lot of emotion. The record doesn't really indicate the talent level of the team.

I expect us to be better, well rounded, more balanced, all that, this season. No question. But I don't think it's going to be evident just by comparing the records.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if we had a better team this year, with a slightly worse record.  We waaay overplayed our talent level last year.

Either way, I like our chances of advancing in the playoffs better with our roster this year, regardless of what the overall record is.

  6. Maybe. I think it just comes down to them liking Thornton and Holmes more, though.

One thing about Patton is that he seems like he's a very hard worker, seriously dedicated to being successful. Running bad routes at your first pro camp isn't really that big of a deal.

Maybe.  I haven't followed Patton that closely.  I just found it interesting that the Colts had a really good look at him, didn't draft him, and then this comes out.  Makes you wonder if they saw something they didn't like.

Then again, I really haven't follow him that closely.

  7. I'm going to buck the trend here by saying that I don't think we drafted BPA very much in this draft.

    And....      I'm OK with that.

I think Werner was an early target...  and a priority.

I think RG was a priority for the 3rd round.    We were looking for a RG we thought could start as a rookie.    As much as I like Thornton -- and I really do -- I don't think he was the highest player on our board at the time our choice came around.

Same with Holmes in the 4th.   Protecting Luck was the clear priority.

I think we targeted Hughes with our trade in the 5th.    He may have been BPA at the time.   I suspect he had a higher grade from the Colts than the spot where we took him.    In other words,  I'd bet he had at least a 4th round grade when we took him at the top of the 5th round.

I suspect Boyett was another target.   Pagano/Grigson talked about pulling him aside at the Combine for a meeting that went less than 5 minutes and how impressed they were.   He was the late round safety we were hoping to get.

I suspect Williams was BPA and that we were thrilled he was there with the 230th pick.   Same with Cunningham.   BPA in this case.

So,  I think it was a mix.   And all in all,  I like our draft.    It maybe one of the least sexy drafts I've ever seen,  but I think it's what we needed for 2013.   Next year will be different.   Much different.

I'll agree with this.  This year's draft sure didn't feel like BPA the entire time.

Werner, I think, was BPA.  I don't think anyone thought he'd be available at 24.

Thornton/Holmes... yeah, I agree.  Probably BPA at a targeted position.

Hughes... maybe BPA, maybe not... potentially a 4th round grade on the Colts board, like you mentioned.  But it sure seemed like they had a specific role for him in mind (ie Haloti Ngata).  I'm guessing targeted also.

Rest of the draft, I'll say BPA.

But yeah... not a sexy draft at all.  But that's not what the Colts needed this year.

Next year, they'll bring sexy back.  :D

  8. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1637700-10-biggest-surprises-from-nfl-rookie-camps/page/8

Analysts viewed Patton as one of the draft's most NFL-ready receivers with many strengths, including his route running. According to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, however, Patton ran poor routes in rookie camp and is "nowhere close to being ready."

This comes as a surprising revelation for Patton, whose body control, hands and quickness give him starter potential.

Maybe this is why the Colt's took a pass?  Didn't they have him in for a private workout?

  9. @JimIrsay: Off/Def Lineman,so many 6-3 to 6-7..320-365 lbs/Big,Physical and Nasty! Speaking of size/strength..GM Grig's just might sign "The Icelander"

    Who is the Icelander?

    @JimIrsay: This 6-9..419 lbs..."The Icelander"...for $200 n Colts T-shirt n Cap...who is this 23 year old Monster Strong Man? 1 guess only by 3pm EST

@JimIrsay: Abby's hatpick for ties....I like him at Nose/3-4 Def...if he can demonstrate enough knee bend at 6-9

    Ooooh, boy.... Here we go.....

  10. But what great competitor wouldn't get a little upset about it? What other top qb would just brush it off? Someimes it seems that Luck reallt doesn't care about being the best qb. But that seems to drive all the greats. To be the best individual player. Be a lil selfish sometimes. Luck seems to have no ego at all.

Wanting to be the best is one thing.  Worrying about what petty opinions other people have about you is something else.

Bottom line: real, grown up men aren't insecure about what other people think.  It's a little something called "confidence".

  11. I agree with Superman that this will become fodder for some funny posts next year at this time.... the thread that somebody recently started that looks back at what we said about last year's draft is very funny to read... I've learned my lesson: 2nd guessing the draft is pointless until some empirical data starts to come in from the field...

I like the draft... I was as surprised as everybody else to hear Thornton, Holmes, and Hughes's names called, but I'm fine with the positions selected and know for a fact that Indy's scouts knew the players better than I did...

I'm of the opinion that so many of the pundits that have been complaining that we didn't draft a corner are overreacting... I've never seen so much discontent over failing to get a guy who would most likely be 4th on the depth chart... I understand that depth was a concern there, but not nearly enough to stray from the BPA strategy and be out of synch with Grigs's draft board... Butler is a better 3rd corner than most teams have in the league...

The only move that would have made me 2nd guess the draft would have been a failure to get a guard, but that was an immediate need for 2013... a fourth corner can be gotten in UDFA much more easily than a starting caliber G (or an OLB who was the best DE in the country by a mile last season, for that matter)...

I do hope that many of my fellow Colts fans vigorously take part in this exercise because It does provide a good snapshot of what we were thinking after the draft and usually provides a perfect example of why football teams don't make personnel decisions by polling the fans...

    A few points:

    1) Even if we did the draft again, a lot of posters still would've picked Thornton and Hughes. Props to the forum!

    2) Last year, I was clamoring for the Colts to pick up Cordy Glenn in the 2nd instead of Fleenor. I'm still going to insist that I was right (unless Coby blows it up this year, which he still might). But I understand why they did it: this year's draft class was just loaded with offensive line talent.

It's probably the same reason why we didn't pick up a WR this year. Next year's draft is probably loaded with elite skills players.

Overall, though, I will say, Grigson will be right a lot more often than me... even though he did bungle the whole center situation (cough... Shipley... cough cough... Satele...). ;-)

  12. The only logical scenario I can see with the Shipley trade is that 1) they're convinced Khaled Holmes will be a lock to start, 2) they absolutely needed to trade either Satele or Shipley for roster space, and 3) no one was offering anything for Satele.

    Point by point:

    1) Maybe... maybe not.  I would've preferred to see Holmes in training camp before making that judgement

    2) This is probably the case, given that we signed and drafted so many offensive linemen in the offseason

    3) This is more likely than not.  I don't see any NFL team offering draft picks for Satele's high-priced contact, given his performance last year.

In any regard, if this was truly the scenario, I would've preferred waiting a bit to see if Holmes was really going to pan out.

  13. It's tough to judge how much a liability the center is when both guards and the right tackle are also liabilities in pass protection.

Not so much the RT.  Justice actually did a fairly good job last year.  The interior protection, however, was just a mess last year.  That's where the vast majority of the defensive penetration came from.

  14. 2 things:

1.We ran mostly a Man blocking scheme last year

2.It was confirmed by one of the players recently that we will be running alot more Zone blocking this year

I think this comes down to 1 thing more then anything else (which is what I said it would come down to from the beginning)

1.We are paying Satele good money (His cap ht is 5,336,667 million dollars this year) which means Colts brass wont eat that and admit they are wrong about him

Yeah, Gavin's got it right... This is purely about the huge financial mistake they made with Satele.

  15. Shipley out played Satele last year in a different system. Last year was all about the deep ball and big plays. This year we are running a west coast offense with more of a power run game. Shipley is a little better pass blocker and suited for a zone blocking system. Satele is a run blocker better suited for a power run game and is better from shotgun. The quick passes of the west coast offense makes Satele's pass blocking liabilities less of an issue. Plus we will probably only have him starting for another year at most. The odds were Shipley was going to get cut so we might as well get something for him. If he is actually as great of a center as everyone is saying, then he should be the starter in Baltimore next year which will improve the value of the pick we get in return. It may not be my favorite trade ever but I understand it.

Seriously, what?  I honestly don't know where you folks are getting this.  :dunno:  Shipley was clearly the better run blocker last year.  Our run game often never got going until they pulled Satele in favor of Shipley.  If anything, Satele might be the better pass blocker, but not by much.

  16. I just can't fathom people on this board. Looking at these reactions you'd think AQ Shipley was Nick Mangold or some pro bowl center. He has never gonna be anything more than average, and we don't settle for average around here anymore. It's obvious that Grigson and the coaches prefer talented guys with size on the o-line, something Shipley doesn't have. Satele and Holmes have that. Shipley played okay last year, but man people have been hyping him way too much.

Last year people questioned the moves made by Grigson, he proved them wrong. This year is the same song. I think he'll prove every naysayer wrong again.

Inb4 everyone mention Saturday as if Shipley was going to be Saturday 2.0

Seriously, James... I don't know where you're getting this.  Shipley is waaay bigger than Satele.

No one thinks Shipley is the next coming of Saturday.  But it boils down to this:  Shipley clearly outplayed Satele on a way cheaper contract.  That's the bottom line.

  17. I agree that our best players should play but it seems they paid Walden because they anticipate him being one of the best players. Freeney was the highest paid player last year but he was not a good OLB. Freeney still started though maybe he should have come off the bench as a pass rushing end.

Maybe... maybe not.  I guess I'm less optimistic about Walden than everyone else.

To me, it seems that they signed Walden as an insurance policy, in case we couldn't get someone else better in the draft.  You never know ahead of time whether someone like Werner will fall to you.  Yes, they probably overpaid Walden... yes, he's getting paid like a starter.  But they had the cap room to overpay a bit, and the way his contract is structured, they can cut him in a year or two without regrets.  That's not a bad way to make sure you have enough bodies at a specific position.
