That's funny. Since when have the colts coaches excelled at anything in the last 6 or7 years. Irsay should ask for a refund.

    Oh, Dear God….

Here’s why Irsay doesn’t ask for a refund.  Because he’s an involved owner and has signed off on every major decision the team has made.   Irsay doesn’t learn about the Colts from reading the Indy Star or watching/listening to local news.

He was in meetings with Ballard and Reich and agreed with most of the decisions.   As for money back, well Frank got fired and so did a number of assistants.  So they paid a price.

It does look like a bargain for WR1 role for us, though a lot of folks would argue he is WR1.5 or WR2 at best.

Amon-Ra St. Brown and Nico Collins show Pittman is paid just right.

I’ve been among the many here who have thought of Pitt as a WR1.5.

That said with our new and improved WR room, I find myself very curious as to what the next few years may look like for Pitt.   We may see a jump with defenses less able to smother him.

Personally, wouldve waited to pay him.  He had one full good year of production.  But maybe something works out for the team where paying him now benefits them.

but yeah, as said above, that’s the new market.  Wide receivers are among the premium positions in the nfl.

getting Michael Pittman for 3yrs/$70mill ($46 mill guaranteed) seems like a VERY good deal now.

I think the reason to pay him now are these….

Houston believes in their QB and Collins as well.  He got 3/72.75.    So $24.25m per year.

Wait one more year and the contract for Collins might be closer to 4/105-110.   More?    Might as well bite the bullet while you have a more manageable number.

    Just thinking out loud….

Richard….    JVan and I aren’t agreeing on much recently, but on this issue I believe he’s right.   But there’s more….

I believe as the story goes Ballard shared that Morocco Brown and other scouts were confident that Smith could play RT effectively.  Ballard was worried because Smiths arms are very short at 32 1/4 when Ballard wants at least 33 1/2 if not more.  So Brown and the scouts convinced Ballard Smith was athletic enough to do the job.    And they been right.

  5. All of the following is my opinion….

I think 2024 is the last year for Ryan Kelly and then Bortolini takes over in 25.

I think Smiths last year is 2025, and I think the Colts will draft a RT to replace Smith in 25 and the kid will start for the Colts in 26.

I think Goncalves might take over at RG for Fries, but almost no one realize Fries graded in the top 40 percent of all guards, so there will be good competition at the spot.

I think the Colts are using the next few years to rebuild the Colts offensive line for the near future…

The Mahomes quote was from February on the Pat Mcafee show.  Long before the Commencement speech.   They aren't related

I’m well aware of when the Mahomes quote I gave you was from.   And of course they’re related.

Mahomes said the quote back in February and he said it AGAIN when the incident happened.  That’s the point.   Mahomes revealed his feelings about Butker in February and he revealed them again when the incident happened.

The Chiefs didn't change the narrative.   The players and coaches gave their opinion.   Some didn't agree but thought he had the right to his opinion.   His teammates,  coaches and teammates have had his back .  He is allowed to have an unpopular opinion  .  The Chiefs owners  didn't force anything

I don’t know why you’re so determined to prove me wrong.  But when Butker gave his speech the first few comments were not supportive starting with Mahomes.

At some point the chiefs ownership came out and said nothing was going to happen to Butker and he was safe.  This was right around the time the NFL said they disagree with Butker, they support DEI, that it’s good for the NFL, but they too thought nothing should happen to Butker.

If comments suddenly go from negative about Butker to what a great teammate Butker is then almost by definition the narrative got changed.   Which I said was a good thing, not a bad thing and you still have a problem with it.   I don’t think there’s a problem, yet you do.   All because you don’t think a narrative changed.   That’s your opinion.

I saw the Mahomes quote in many places. It was something he said in the past, not after Butker's speech. Whenever I get down time, I will find it and post it.

    Just to clarify….

Mahomes actually did say it right after Butkers speech.   I was completely unaware of it until after Butkers speech.  It was completely off my radar.

Then Butler made the speech.  A day later Mahomes made the comment.  I saw it on ESPN and/or NFL.com.   This is when I first learned of it.

And to be clear, I have no problem with the Chiefs completely changing the narrative to what a good teammate Butker is.  I’m fine with it.  It clearly came from ownership when they publicly declared Butker was safe and nothing would happen.  At that point every Chiefs comment from Reid to Mahomes to Kelcie has been in step with ownership, as it should be.  He’s an important player to them and they now have his back.

    Pierce - the punching bag.

Unfortunately….  Pierce will remain a punching bag for many here.   He may not be as good as we want at this point, but he’s better than his detractors believe.   He’s got value to the team.   For right now he’s a good WR4 and has room to improve.

Here are the average per catch for Pierce…

    2022:   14.5

    2023:   16.1

    career:  15.2

That average per catch is really, really good.  Guys like that aren’t easy to find.  Plus he blocks.  And for a WR4,  that’s a nice place to slit him.  I think our WR room looks much improved.

    1.   Pittman

    2.  Adonai

    3.  Downs

    4.  Pierce

    5.  Gould

    6.  Dulin

Why wouldn't he be safe?  There was no chance he was getting cut by the Chiefs or fined by the league.

Also I can't find that mahomes quote.

The Mahomes quote was about 10 days ago.   I have found a version of it:   New York Post, May 16.   Their Page 6 Column. It refers to a story Mahomes told about Butker to Pat MacAfee around the Super Bowl.   The story I found it either on ESPN or NFL.com.

As for everything else, I was only re-stating a position I have had since the incident happened.   I don’t know who is joining the discussion mid-stream and might not know my position.

A number of my posts in the thread have said I don’t want Butker touched and then I added that both the NFL and the Chiefs owners have said he’s safe and that end that.   I was just repeating my comment.

I hope I’ve answered your questions.

This is from an article at CBSsports that reviewed all the teams defenses to guess if they'd be ranked in the top 10.  The Colts got a "Not Likely", which I think is fair.  Also, I don't think a top ranked defense is that important in todays NFL.  I'd much rather have a top 10 offense and a middle of the road defense.

"The Colts are another one of those defenses that seemingly just has a low ceiling. Unless Laiatu Latu has a Will Anderson Jr.-like impact on the pass rush, the secondary doesn't seem strong enough to get this unit into the top 10. The Colts are counting on players like Julius Brents (who was pretty good as a rookie) and Dallis Flowers as foundational pieces of the defensive backfield, and that seems like a shaky proposition if you want to be an elite defense."

One other important note about the Colts getting a “not likely” rating.   So did about 10-12 other teams.   I think there were more teams in this category than in any other.   Just some needed context.

  12. I’m glad the Butker controversy is blowing over.   I don’t want anything bad to happen to him.  And since both the KC owners and the NFL have said he’s safe then that ends that.   Good.

But let’s not kid ourselves…. While everyone including the KC players and coaches are saying the right things NOW that wasn’t the initial reaction when this first happened.

In his first public reaction to the controversy this is what Mahomes said….  Paraphrasing pretty closely…. “I say hello to Harrison on the first day of the new season, and I say goodbye on the last day.  And I don’t say another word during the entire season.”

That’s not normal.   It’s not normal to happen and it’s not normal to reveal that to the public.

Now everyone is singing a new tune now.  That’s clearly coming from ownership, which is fine.  I’m just saying let’s not pretend what became public at the start didn’t happen.  Because it did, and it was on the record.

  13. As we know, it’s the hardest position in team sports to master.  You not only have to know where your teammates are on the field, you also have to know where all the defenders are.  It’s 3-dimensional chess.

So, in the last week, two similar stories have come on my radar.   In one, the 49ers Brock Purdy is putting on weight.  And in the other, the Ravens Lamar Jackson says he’s taking weight off.   And I’m here to say I want both to succeed.   Purdy feels he needs more armour and Jackson feels he needs more mobility.

Whatever the reason,  I pull for guys who recognize everything revolves around them and are trying to get better for the good of the team.

Once upon a time I wasn’t a big fan of Geno Smith.  Now he’s figured things out and is doing well for the Seahawks.  So I hope he does well.   A long time ago I wasn’t a big fan of Randall Cunningham in Philly.   Then he reinvented himself in Minnesota and I was so happy for him.

Damn, the position is just soooo hard.  So if a guy figures it out, I root for them.  I think in all my years the one guy I didn’t pull for was Jay Cutler.  Miserable guy who always seemed to put himself before the team.  Yuk.

    Thanks for indulging me….

I really do like this strategy.  My only concern is both Diggs and Simmons are in their 30’s.  If we really wanted to nail the position down I would prefer trading for Baker and extending him.  Cross and Scott behind Blackmon and Baker would be a nice backup pair of young talent pushing the veterans.

    You’ve learned nothing about Ballard.

You'd rather trade picks to acquire a safety who will want to become one of the highest paid safeties in football.

    1.   Ballard is not trading high picks for a safety, ANY safety.

    2.   He’s not going to make Baker, or ANY safety one of the highest paid at his position.

As for Simmons and Diggs….   I think one is 30 and the other is 31.   Their PFF grades show they’re still playing at a good level.  Ballard wasn’t afraid to sign Rodney McCloud and he was much older.  If Ballard doesn’t sign Simmons or Diggs it won’t have anything to do with their age

I think our OL was REALLY good last year and would get a bit better if we had a full year out of our RT

I think our DL was middling at best last year but would be a bit better with DL depth and our new DE

Thanks for the response….  I completely agree with your OL viewpoint.

But I regret that I don’t agree with any part of your DL view.  Sorry, wish it wasn’t so.

    I agree with 1st paragraph

Respectfully I DONT agree with your assessment of the OL.   If our RT can stay healthy the whole year our OL should be a bit better above a decent year

I personally think our DL will also be a BIT better with depth behind Grover that we didn’t have as well as our shiny new DE

Am I reading you right?   You're not all that impressed by our OL?!?

You wrote:  if our RT can stay healthy the whole year our OL should be a bit better above decent?!?    Really?   That’s it?  That’s all?   A bit better above decent?   Or am I completely misunderstanding you?

    Raimann.  Nelson.  Kelly.  Fries.  Smith?

You don’t think that’s a top-10 line?   A plus for the Colts offense?

I respect you Mike, so I’m assuming I’ve misunderstood your meaning.

No ... I'm sure this is bad character . Oh my God , why did we ever draft this malcontent ?

The link below exhibits the fact that only 10 of the 22 2nd round picks have signed as we speak. The 5 picks above him and the 9 picks below him have not signed. This is very worrisome .

Hey, no worries.  I’ve made the same mistake plenty of times.

As for our competition for QB3?  I don’t pretend to know which way Steichen is leaning….   Sam or Slovis?   There are good arguments for both.

I think they should, but I'm not holding my breath.

This is what Ballard said after the draft, when he was asked about potentially adding a veteran corner or safety:

"It just depends. You know between now and the start of the season ... there's still some good players out there. I mean there is there's some veterans out there that can still play. You know we'll dig and investigate all of them and then make a decision if we think they're the right fit for us as we go along." (Transcribed by Youtube, 12 minute mark if you want to watch.)

To me, that means they're not in a hurry to do anything. I think they'll shuffle some spots going into camp, they always do. But any noteworthy veteran signings are probably going to be reserved for what they think they need coming out of camp, maybe due to injury or a young player not being ready to make the final roster. That's my interpretation.

Edit: Ballard went even further on McAfee's show. 'We have our eyes on the market, but we want to see how our guys look.'

    I think it’s entirely possible I’m wrong.

Ballard has also said it takes two to make a deal.  So even if the Colts would like to sign someone today, if the player isn’t ready to commit then nothing happens.

There are roughly two and a half weeks left for someone to sign before the summer break.   That’s a lot of time.  So I think something happens.   Then again,  I suppose anything is possible either way.

  20. 17 hours ago, Dark Superman said:

I like the front seven a lot, but the secondary is a huge question mark heading into the season. Players staying healthy is going to be key as always, but for the Colts to have a great season the younger guys will all need to step up and take a step forward since it's not looking like the Colts are signing a veteran Corner or Safety which I think is a huge mistake.

I wouldn’t be so sure the Colts won’t sign a free agent for the secondary.   And perhaps sooner than you think.

Summer break happens around the second week of June.  I think the Colts will sign a veteran corner or safety by then.   Most free agents want to know where they’re going to play by then.   They need to get a home, especially if they have family going to live with them.  They want to get into the playbook and meet with the coaches they’re going to play for.

Players need to get their lives in order soon, so I think we’re going to get the signing we all want.

Steelers have a QB and it's Justin Fields.     I am on record as a NON Wilson fan.   I always thought it was a terrible move by the Donks.

Interesting….   I think Pittsburg getting rid of their 2023 QB room, Pickett and the backup and bringing in Wilson AND Fields for next to nothing is (IMO) the best off-season transformation by any NFL team including the Colts.

Wilson AND Fields for almost nothing?!?   Yes,  please!

FWIW:  Fields is being used in camp as a returner.  Punt for sure and I think kickoffs as well.

Perhaps you’re unaware that the nuns who run the school put out a statement saying they are not happy with what Butker said.  That they expected a speech celebrating these women graduating and going into the world to make it better anyway they want.   So the nuns think you’re wrong.
