  1. Norv Turner & Ken Whisenhunt are great OC's. Pep needs creativity badly. The Stanford way has made him very simplistic. Run run run. There's no creative ways

He flashes every once in awhile like the TD pass to Castonzo or the DHB reverse TD catch against the Broncos the first time

Needs to be more consistent with all these weapons he's about to have come August. When Hilton gets doubled, he needs to find ways to get him the ball

    "Run run run" ???

Adjusted for gameflow, the Colts were the pass heaviest teams in the NFL (click the link, read Andrew Luck paragraph). Even off basic stats, Andrew Luck had the third most pass attempts in the leage.

I have no idea where you get the idea that we were a "Run run run" team last year.

  2. I agree that having Jones is obviously a huge plus to our defensive front... but did anyone watch him on CJ Anderson's 22 yard run? Left a bad taste in my mouth with how bad he got manhandled, opening up the huge cutback lane.

  3. For a long time there was a "Trust in Polian" sentiment in Colts fandom, especially around draft time...

and as the years went along his draft scheme seemed to almost purposefully become more and more unorthodox, seemingly on purpose...

I held a grudge on Polian for a long time after the New York game. Was glad he was the Colts GM during the Peyton era, but think he was kept on the job 3-4 years too long...

I don't want to derail this thread at all, but I think a lot of the drafting woes in Polian's final years here were more to do with his son, Chris Polian, than him. That's just my opinion.

  4. But IIRC, they put Werner through their own private workout before they drafted him. I think at least in the case of 1st round picks you want to have met them at least once. Even with 2nd and 3rd round guys, you want to know what you're getting. You don't just want to watch tape on a guy and then draft him months later with no type of interaction.

I think the 50/50 thing is because boards never fall they way people expect so you end up with someone who you didn't expect to get, or the guy you wanted is taken before you can select him.

    Totally agree.

It's all about keeping the cards close to the chest.  There's lots of head faking and misinformation given and received between scouts, gms, you name it.  No team really knows who another team really likes.  Heck, no one within a partiuclar organization knows what a team will do except for about 3 or 4 guys (I'm guessing VP of football ops, GM, and HC, maybe the head director of scouting).

I know that if I were running an organization, I would want my OC and DC in on who we were targeting in the draft as well. They are the guys who will dictate scheme and will have to utilize the players.

  5. On the bright side, Hugh Thornton can only get better, there is no way he can get worse.

I don't know why there is this misconception out there that Thornton was bad. He was inconsistent, definitely, but overall I'd say he played pretty well given his circumstances. He was a 3rd round draft pick who wasn't expected to start right away but was thrust into the starting lineup week two. He showed flashes of being a pretty good lineman for us. I'm very content going into the season with Thomas and Thornton as our starting guards. I think that minimizes the importance of going out and getting a big name center as well, which is why I think the Colts are fine with starting Holmes or Costa there.

If you were referring to drafting a guard for depth though, I'm OK with that. Can never have enough OL depth and competition.

  6. On top of what you mentioned, the Colts had a punt blocked and attempted a fake punt that was unsuccessful. I thought we had also blocked a punt, but according to Colts.com, we didn't.

I thought our ST was a marked improvement this year compared to the Polian years. Only improvement I really hope for is from our kick return game. Too many times we took it out from 9 yards deep and got dropped before the 20 yard line (David Reed comes to mind). I think some of our returners after Reed were better at not doing this.

  7. Holmes was hurt??  I don't think I ever saw him on the injury report...

Thornton I'm not convinced on yet but since he's young and going into his 2nd year there is a good chance of improvement.

Honestly I want to see a top 16 offensive line.  If our O-line is average or slightly above I'll be happy.

Both Holmes and Thorton missed most of training camp, if I remember right.

  8. Doesn't sound like we'll be bringing in Brian de la Puente or Chris Clemons. I'm not super happy about that, but I trust Grigs and the coaches to be able to evaluate the talent we have on our roster right now.

    Here's to hoping Holmes/Costa and Howell/Brown won't suck.

  9. I don't think they will take a way a draft pick. That would be unprecedented, like bavanlan explained above. IF they will punish the team at all, I could see them perhaps doing a salary cap penalty. But that is also highly unlikely.

I'm expecting anywhere from 1-6 months suspension, $250k-$1M fine for Mr. Irsay, and a 30-60-day mandatory rehab program. I don't see how Mr. Goodell would justify doing much more than that.

  10. The fact that drugs and alcohol create dependency issues is no secret. Every 6th grader in America can tell you that. If you choose to develop an addiction, than the addiction is your choice. Grow up. Be an adult. Be a big boy and put your big boy pants on. Stop bleeding from your heart with pity for people who made bad choices.

Personal responsibility. Own it. Don't point the finger elsewhere. I was addicted to Vicodin for 2 years when I was younger. I made the choice to use because they made me feel good. I knew it was wrong. I knew they were bad for me, but I did it anyway because I wanted a buzz.

I made the choice to stop after some time. I didn't have a disease. I had weak will and poor self discipline.

I'm glad he didn't kill or injure anyone. Irsay shouldn't be demonized for what he did. He's only human. But don't pretend it's not 100% on him.

Ruksak, thank you for the post. This is a very sensitive subject, and we each have our own thoughts and opinions on the causes and results of such an incident.

Respectfully though, we, as readers, can either choose to accept your opinion for fact, or we can read and believe the numerous research studies done that confirm addiction is a disease. A quick Google search will bring up many articles published on varying levels of credible sources about addiction being a disease, including one on a government website. Further digging could be done to find links to a number of academic & scholarly sources proving that addiction, according to research, is a brain disease, but I'm not going to do that right now.

Like the rest of you, my thoughts and prayers are with Jim. I hope he seeks the help he needs.

  11. Bill's expertise wasn't FA so of course people will roll their eyes whenever Bill comes out with his opinion on FA.

Bill was good at getting weapons for Peyton, and getting fast guys on defense, through the draft. The only time I remember him getting FAs were all busts, ala Corey Simon, Anthony McFarland, etc.

He excelled in undrafted FAs and late rounders in the draft.

Anthony McFarland was not a bust.
