  1. Colts want Freeney......... They've repeated this throughout the off-season. I have serious doubts about fielding a successfull 3-4 defense this year. But Pagano and his staff don't. What if Freeney/Mathis combine for 30 sacks and 10 forced fumbles?..and the defense is actually pretty good? A year from now we'll all be talking about how to resign Dwight Freeney........ Rather than dump a great player now, I want to see Pagano prove to us all that he knows what he is doing.

  2. Grigson recently answered a question about the TE position and the upcoming draft......said that the draft is thin at the position, and that you either have blocking types or receving types....very rare to get one that can do both....didn't mention any names, I just got the impression he won't be drafting Fleener.....

  3. Balance.

After the WC playoffs in the NFL this year:

Winners. 164.5 yards rushing, 304 yards passing

Losers. 82.0 yards rushing, 281 yards passing

The Saints held the Lions in the WC loss to 32 rushing yards.

.....those numbers don't say it all...and are misleading....the leaders of the games run to burn clock and preserve leads. The teams that are behind abandon the run and pass TO CATCH UP before time runs out.....we've all seen it hundreds of times (well, I have)...
  4. Yes...the priority should be to build a BALANCED team. I don't want avg players at every position but I don't need 3 pro bowl receivers and TE either. Mostly...I want an offensive line and defensive line that DOMINATE the line of scrimmage. Wether that means we can run on other teams with just a solid back, gives our franchise qb time to throw the ball, puts pressure on opposing qbs and shuts down run games. If you win at the point of attack...you are on your way to winning the game. Give me pro bowlers up front on both sides and an elite qb that will manage the game but has the ability to carry a team if they have to and that is what I want.

We should have the qb with Luck. I hope to give him the best offensive line in football. Counter with a great d-line, solid lbs and an opportunistic saftey and I think you can win that way. I don't need all pro receivers on both sides or pro bowl back. I would be very happy running the ball 30 times a game...as long as my qb can wing it when we have to and can bring us back then I am happy. If we are balanced that means we run on teams we have an advantage on and we throw the same way. If he can move us down the field on a 2min drill then thats all I care. I would much rather have the Patriots of 6 years ago (before they went pass happy) then the new ones or the Saints now. I'm sorry. Give me that balance..its much harder to game plan for and much easier to make in game adjustments.

.....who is saying you don't need balance?....This post began with the notion that you don't need a DOMINATE running attack to win it all....I agree with that....of COURSE you still need a good O-line and a good D line...who is saying you don't?...not me....you seem to be interpreting what I'm saying is "all you need is a QB and some receivers"....I'm not...of course you need a complete team..what's wrong with say, an Addai and a Rhodes?....nothing.
  5. Actually, in the Super Bowl, both the Pats and Giants were averaging over 4 yards per carry. And without their strong running game going all throughout the playoffs, the Giants wouldn't have won. I think you need to be able to pass well more than you need to be able to run well, but you shouldn't sacrifice one for the other. Offenses work best when they can rely on both. A good running game forces the defense to stack the box and bite on play action; a good passing game will spread the defense out and make them drop back into coverage

..............nobody is saying "sacrifice one for the other"....nobody is saying you don't need to run the ball.....of course you do!....but when builing a team, or even maintaining a good team, every GM, every coach must make choices in regards to priorities.....
  6. Several comments:

    1. Taking players who have behavioral red flags (drugs, legal problems, abuse, etc.) places your team at significant additional risk of losing their services for extended periods of time through suspensions that can disrupt the function of the team during the season. I don't believe their potential is worth the risk. See impact of Pacman Jones for example.

    2. Bill Polian did not lose his ability to identify talent - he turned the job over to his son Chris who never had the ability to begin with. Chris was responsibile for the Ugoh trade as one of his first significant actions.

.....thanks for saying it for me.........and not everyone smokes pot, or whatever....those who do illegal things while pursuing a promising NFL career lack self discipline.......and yes, Bill Polian (unfortunately) grew old....
  7. Dwight Freeney has always been a team player.....how do any of us know that he was even offered an extention?...Because someone who knows someone who knows someone said?......what was the amount?...What were the terms?....not saying he wasn't...but do we even really know that?....even if he was, there could be legitimate reasons why he turned it down........

  8. Im pretty sure this is the 2nd time you've said this(Just that I know of) so why do you keep saying this?

    Cory Redding

    Tom Zibikowski

    Samson Satele

    Mike McGlynn

    Brandon McKinney

    Donnie Avery

    Traded for Winston Justice

Sure, they may not be the biggest names, but saying they done nothing in FA is not accurate. Much more than Polian done in yrs..

................you can add Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis to the list....
  9. I think it's really hard to predict because we just don't know alot of answers right now. I think the AFC south is weak. I think Luck will be pretty good his first year. In my opinion the biggest factors in determining a losing or winning season will be the offensive line and the defensive secondary. O-line is a huge question mark with the new players signed and first year players from last year. Secondary must improve greatly over last year if there's to be any hope of a winning season.

  10. So glad I'm not the only one who doesn't think Freeney is a washed up specialist. The problem last year in pass defense was the lack of talent in the secondary. QB's got rid of passes quickly to open receivers. And in regards to run defense....if Freeney sucks at it why didn't offenses run at him all the time?....if you pick any random game last year you'll see offenses ran right as much as they ran left. Many DE's of Freeney's calber played at a high level well into their upper 30's. ......like Doleman, Smith, White, and others......

  11. just don't see it.....I'm with Bill Polian and dgambill on Freeney....and this: Mathis and Freeney need to be rushing at the same time. ....will be hard to do with one less player in coverage.....I hope Pagano proves me wrong, but I don't see an effective 3-4 defense with our current roster...can't just scheme your way to success...got to have the players....the Colts don't have 3-4 players right now. They just don't.

  12. About two months ago I went through all 32 teams rosters and counted how many players each team had over the age of 30 (this included free agents who have since left or are still unsigned).....Colts had something like 12, which was pretty average.....Chargers had the most with 19....Texans the fewest with 3 (I think)......anyway, by the "over 30/ under 30" standard, the Colts will begin the season as one of the youngest teams with (probably) only 4 offensive and defensive players being over 30 (and even these not by much) : Wayne- 33, Freeney- 32, Mathis- 31, Redding- 31. This of course excludes Snow who may not be on the roster, and Vinitieri who, (cough) should not be on the roster.
