  1. I'd be more worried about 'cash over cap'.

    What's to worry about?

if you think RGIII that garcon is a number 1 wr and he deserved to get paid that much money your nuts

I love Garcon's skillset. I know he wasn't the number one receiver on the Colts and I don't necessarily expect him to be a true number one here. If he can break the 1000 yard barrier and benefit from Griffin III's deep ball ability then he'll be more than worth the price we paid.

Edit/note: I'd love to continue to engage you guys in discussion but apparently the board software hates me for not having enough approved posts. :(

  2. Mathis is one of a couple of guards we're looking at. I'd prefer to get a younger guy if at all possible.

How the heck do the Redskins still have cap space after the penalty and all their signings!?

They're probably going to do something stupid and overpay him.

Josh Morgan and Garcon only cost us about $3 mil in cap space this year. We still have plenty to work with.

someone needs to take dan synders checkbook from him

Snyder still signs the checks... but he doesn't make the decisions these days. It's funny to see people incorrectly assume things about how our organization works now based on how it used to work.

It's also funny to me when people go out of their way to call Snyder an *. I don't necessarily disagree... but the things he does make a lot more sense when you realize that he is a fan. How many of your fellow Colts fans would you trust to actually run the franchise? Not very many. There is some upside in that you know he's going to do anything it takes to win, which is why we spend so much money and is why we can do more with less cap (cash creates cap).

Maybe hes got some sort of memory block over the last ten years or something paying these guys to much for poor results, I assume hes under thet thought process more money means good results, but my thought process says leave players with wanting more so they can EARN more

The big problem was less the rampant spending than it was that we didn't budget for depth. Now that we've started to focus on building a complete team under Allen and Shanahan, the spending is only an asset. The only things it hurts is Snyder's wallet and other owners who are unwilling to pay out.

Our lack of respect for the draft under Gibbs II really did a ton of damage, too.

  3. No "Sexy Rexy" pleeeaaaaas!!!!!!!!

Rex would make for a fine backup. You never want to lose your starting QB but at least Rex has the capacity to win games of his own accord (i.e., without having to be completely carried by his team - few backup QBs can do that). You just don't want him in there for the long haul because his propensity for turnovers really takes a toll.

I'd definitely take him over Leinart, who remains one of the most limited QBs I've ever seen.

Perhaps Grossman would seek a starter job first, so I don't think he would say "Yes" to us.

There's no way anyone offers Grossman a starting job.

  4. Is Calvin Johnson really $114,000,000 better than Reggie Wayne? Wow!

Wayne lost a HUGE chunk of his market value by virtue of being 33 years old. If he were 28 he'd probably command more than Vincent Jackson but wouldn't get the kind of megadeal the likes of Megatron and Larry Fitzgerald have received.

  5. Interesting to see the conflicting opinions about Garcon. I like the signing, personally, but I don't expect him to be a true #1 so much as a niche receiver who brings a few qualities to the table we've been lacking. Between him, Josh Morgan, Leonard Hankerson, Niles Paul, and possibly Eddie Royal we have a pretty diverse group of young, not entirely proven talent. It'll be interesting to see how things shake out.

Garcon has just blew a chance to pair with one of the best QB prospects in 20+ years. Who does he think is going to get the ball to him?

One of the other guys who could be labeled one of the best prospects in 20+ years.

How did the Redskins even have enough dough?

They must have cut some guys.

Best of Luck to Pierre. Wish we could have kept him. Another one bites the dust.

No big cuts, just a combination of intelligent cap management and the fact that even with the massive penalty we still had $18 mil in cap space. Garcon's cap hit for this year is only about $2.1 mil if I'm recalling correctly.

What would the Redskins fans and Garcon do if we draft RGIII? :)

Take Luck and enjoy ourselves just as much. :)

    Typical Snyder, overpaying free agents.

Snyder has no say in the players we bring in or the contracts we dish out. He's being a good owner and letting his GM and coach do the work these days.

Nah I understand its a business ... but for the life of me I cant recall in recent NFL history if ever where a team dumped nearly a dozen starters - many of them pro-bowlers all in one season.

Shanahan did it in Washington very recently... but the quality of player was much lower on average than what you guys have given up. The Broncos also had a similar shedding of players (several VERY high quality) when McDaniels showed up and gutted Shanahan's roster. It's actually not uncommon when a team undergoes radical regime change.

  6. Bad news about that 1.6 mil in cap space, guys. Both the Skins and Cowboys have released statements denying that they have received anything in writing from the league office regarding any penalties and will continue to operate as normal. Basically, they're challenging the league to try to impose the penalty because they know that the league has absolutely no basis for it. No rules were actually broken and the only way both franchises could have violated any understood agreement between the owners was if the owners were colluding during the lockout, which they can't admit as it may jeopardize their antitrust exemption.

Smart money is on Goodell backing down by 4 PM tomorrow or the issue will invariably escalate and wind up in arbitration or court.

  7. I liked Oshiomogho (awesome-wa) more than many did in his season here and would recommend him over our other departing safety. He really had a hard time with injuries, though, and was never at 100% when he did play. He'd definitely be worth a flier on the cheap so long as you have a backup plan.

  8. well sounds like Redskins just cant catch a break anywhere, first they had alot of talent and cant win squat and now 36 million dollar hit HOLY ####!

The good news (to use the term very loosely) is that the $36 million can be split up between the next two seasons. With some creative cap accounting the Skins could still find themselves a good $20 million under the cap while absorbing slightly more than half of the blow this year.

It's interesting seeing people dredge up examples of other teams making similar moves to pay big in 2010 without retribution (e.g., the Bears with Julius Peppers) and formulate all manner of conspiracy theory (e.g., only NFCE teams being hit hard when John Mara is the new head of the NFL Management Council), though.

  9. Neither team broke any rules and the league has stated that this penalty is "not a violation" or some ^cowpatties^ like that. Apparently there was some sort of loose agreement between owners that they wouldn't abuse the flexibility offered by a capless year. The messed up part is that the league APPROVED the contract moves made by each team in 2010 without a peep and made no bones about it in 2011. Evidently, though, some owners complained when they saw the Redskins cap figure this year and decided to cry foul.

I can understand the penalty to a degree but the way it has been handled is absolutely rotten. Reeks of Goodell overreaching and the usual small market vs. larget market tiff between owners.

Edit: I should add that the $10 and $36 million penalties come almost entirely from a grand total of three restructured contracts (DeAngelo Hall, Albert Haynesworth, and Miles Austin).

  10. ManningToCollie's pull from About sums up the stereotypical distinction rather nicely. In practice, though, it's entirely dependent on scheme and available personnel first and foremost. If you're going to play a lot of Cover 2, for example, you want both safeties to be good in deep coverage. In a primarily Cover 1 or Cover 3 based defense you might expect a greater disparity along the lines of what's already been said in this thread. In certain schemes there might be no distinguishable difference in role between the two outside of which half of the field they line up over.

no doubt bob and antoine were the best which is why i want landry. landry would attack and bethea would survey the field and play center field. imo no one plays center field better then bethea other then ed reed.

Be very careful what you wish for.

Imagine Bob Sanders. Now imagine him being 4 inches and 20 pounds bigger. Now imagine if, instead of being a surefire wrap-up tackler, he went for a lot of big hits and failed to actually bring the ballcarrier down with stunning frequency. Now imagine that, rather inexplicably considering his speed and extra size, he is particularly bad in coverage against TEs and has been known to lose in footraces with the likes of Jason Witten. Now imagine that his football instincts are somewhat diminished. Now recall just how often he missed games due to lower body injury and realize how that hasn't changed. That's basically Landry in a nutshell, a massive disappointment who just hasn't been able to pull his game together despite having gobs of physical talent. He's great if you love vanity shots, though.

Or you could argue that our defense was so bad that offensive players made it to our last line of defense easily, causing Bethea to make plays. Polamalu is a great SS, but would be a terrible FS because he isn't very good in coverage. When healthy, I haven't seen a better safety tandem than Bethea and Bob.

They were a great pairing, for sure. I'd still probably take a less balanced tandem if given the choice, though. In that 2005-2010 timeframe I'd take Ed Reed and Dawan Landry, Troy Polamalu (who I think is slightly overrated) and Ryan Clark (who I think is very underrated), Michael Griffin and Chris Hope, and perhaps even Brian Dawkins and Michael Lewis slightly over them. For the money, though, I'd go with Sean Taylor and Clark above ALL of them.

It's an admittedly biased perspective but Taylor simply had a skillset that was unparralleled by any player in NFL history. Anyone who would dare to say otherwise never really watched the man play.

  11. Broncos fans don't deserve Manning, many of them would still rather have Tebow. I say if they want to suffer with a crappy Tebow let them. The other cities would appreciate Manning. Although, it would be nice for Manning to singlehandedly crush "Tebowmania."

The Broncos fanbase is pretty deeply divided over their QB situation but the divide really doesn't have a lot to do with Peyton himself. As my homie out in Denver put it, they're split about 50/50 on Tebow and there is a lot of friction there but the majority of the pro-Tebow crowd still wants Peyton to come in because (1) he's clearly worlds better at QB and (2) they hope he can teach Tebow a thing or two about playing the position. All in all you probably have 70% of the fanbase pulling for Manning, which isn't too different from anywhere else.

I'm definitely rooting for the quashing of Tebowmania one way or another.

  12. Let me help you guys out here...

The Redskins are just so stupid. Why trade your future and this years draft for one player. I would have a tough time doing that for Andrew Luck if I'm another GM. The Redskins are desperate and now becaues of Snyder, they have no real prospects coming in.

It's an admittedly high-risk move but it's one that the Skins were going to have to make sooner than later. It's not very often that a QB prospect with Griffin's skillset comes along, so as long as you think his head's in the right place and you're in position to make that move then overpaying for that talent is understandable. Hopefully it pays off... but the draft is always a bit of a crapshoot.

It is fallacious to place this one on Snyder, though. Snyder voluntarily abandoned control of the direction of the franchise when he hired Shanahan and Bruce Allen. These days he's more of a fan and check-signer than he is a Jerry Jones level meddler. I'm sure he's a fan of the move, of course, but the #2 pick is in DC because Shanahan loves RGIII (and probably Luck as well).

Dont the redskins have a TON of cap room? I see them going FA heavy now that they will have hardly any good picks in upcoming drafts

We have about $40 million in cap space after re-signing most of our key free agents.

But Fletcher, and Landry are free agents and will ask for the big bucks. Plus they have a ton of needs and must sign RG3 now, who even with the new CBA will get a good amount of money.

Landry is not coming back. He has completely botched his injury situation by refusing to get his achilles fixed under the knife and is unlikely to be healthy anytime soon. It could be several years before he's 100% IF he ever gets to 100% with the way he's handled himself. To boot, outside of the 9 games where he played lights out in 2010 he's been a serious underachiever with some deep flaws in his game. There were even reports that he attempted to hide a hand surgery from the team. No thanks.

Fletcher will not likely stay in DC if he comes with a huge pricetag. Everyone here loves him but he's 37 years old and can't be counted upon in the long term. Hopefully he'll stay and accept a reasonable contract that reflects his immense value to the team but also takes into account that the end is near.

We're rebuilding and so are they. No rebuilding team gets rid of 3 first rounders and a 2nd round pick for a QB.

The situations are not the same. The Colts have only just begun their rebuild and were fortunate enough to be so bad without Peyton that they were in position to draft his replacement in year one. The Skins, however, are in year three of their rebuild and have never finished poorly enough to get a worthy QB prospect. Their roster has already been completely gutted and stocked with young talent at key positions. It's by no means a finished product... but neither were the Lions when they took Stafford or you guys back in 1998.

Its going to be an uphill battle for RG3, the skins offense is a joke and now they wont be able to draft anyone to help him out. Unless shanahan has another lucky draft like in 06, this team wont allow rg3 to succeed.

The Skins offense was decimated by injury and plagued by Rex Grossman last season so it's unfortunately tough to tell what they've really got. We do know that they've got some talented RBs and TEs, though. The offensive line has shown flashes of being pretty good (Jammal Brown aside) when guys aren't being carted off the field and they've stocked up on young WRs the past few years, so if one or two of them develops into something then things aren't all that bad.

...and the Washington tradition of overpaying for hype continues unabated.

    No arguing that. lol.gif

Hopefully RGIII proves not to be all hype.
