  1. Weren't some scouts thrown under the bus for saying RG3 had character issues, namely being a "me" kinda guy ?

Some scouts were thrown under the his for saying the same thing about Newton, and they turned out to be true, he has moved past it no apparently but last season he was a train wreck with his behavior.

Newton's character issues were a little more well documented and certainly manifested themselves more clearly last season than Griffin's character flaws ever have.  Right now it's apparent that Griffin is not handling the situation he's in right now overly well but most of the talk about his character right now is conjecture.  The media gaffes have been problematic but as someone who has always had a proclivity for speaking relatively freely behind a mic it's hard to tell whether Griff's attitude needs a genuine adjustment or he just needs to apply a filter until he has more time to consider his words.

We'll see where his character ultimately registers over the next season or two.  Ego is not a bad thing for a QB to have, it's really just about keeping things in perspective.  Also losing never helps anything.

  2. Shh.... Don't tell anyone. But there are a lot of us who think Redskins would be in better playoff position if their backup had been playing this year.

I lack the confidence in Cousins that some people have.  He's had his moments and I think he's a quality young backup QB but we're talking about a guy who has thrown 5 interceptions in the only 4 games he's ever played.  I'm not entirely convinced he's got an NFL arm and he's shown a proclivity to be just as shaky when pressured as Griffin has this season.

We may actually not be much WORSE with Cousins starting but I have a hard time believing we'd be any better.

  3. Gruden was actually excellent in Oakland

Those were good teams, no doubt... but in terms of the big picture nothing about his tenure in Tampa was terribly impressive.  Gannon was lightning in a bottle and Johnson was a proven commodity with very little gas left in the tank, beyond those guys he really struggled at cultivating talent on the offensive side of the ball.  He always struck me as a diminishing returns kind of coach and those are guys you usually want to avoid.

  4. ATL updated their write up with a predictable denial from Shanahan:

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000286339/article/rgiii-asked-redskins-not-to-show-his-bad-plays

Silver's been around a long time I'd assume in part because he doesn't make things up out of thin air. But there's such a feeding frenzy in DC right now I'm sure there's all sorts of stories flying around. They reaaaaally need a win on MNF or this wave of negativity will just continue. Getting to 4-7 isn't much but it would make the national media tap the brakes for a week... That 7 game win streak last year is looking like a massive fluke.

Absolutely.  Being in the DC media market right now is awful.  Tons of vitriol and rumors flying back and forth all over the place, it's really best to just tune it all out because there's no verifying most of this stuff.  People just seem to want more reasons to justify their blaming of X (X being your choice of: Mike Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan, or Robert Griffin with a side of Jim Haslett and Keith Burns).  You guys have been pretty stable during the social media era, so I'm not quite sure if you can properly imagine how mind numbingly stupid the ongoing conversations are every day.  We're quite an unreasonable bunch of fans and, as someone who generally tries to be patient, you can sometimes find yourself wondering if the fans really deserve a successful team with how they act.

Washington Post has had mostly pathetic team coverage for years.  They've had a mini-feud with Snyder and have tended to hire guys inclined to create controversy and capitalize hard on negative press.  John Keim of ESPN is one of the few beat guys who I'd characterize as rather intelligent, measured, and reasonable and he was the one who pointed out that Shanahan went WELL out of his way to talk to the media on a day he normally wouldn't to deny this.  Implication being that he'd only do that if he found the report completely and utterly ridiculous.

None of these guys are who I was talking about, though.

  5. Just an FYI... while our legitimate insider sources (i.e., not the media... guys with actual inside lines to the team) have been indicating that there have been some conflicts within the organization for much of the season (cause for concern to those of us who listen and care, for sure), this latest report is said to be 100% bunk.  So it'd probably be wise not to jump on the hate bandwagon over something that isn't true, although I know some of you are firmly affixed to it already. :)

  6. Tarkenton is seriously underrated in discussions of the all-time greats.  I definitely shy away from calling him the best but, hell, if I achieved that level of success at the pinnacle of my sport I'd probably tend to have the same self-evaluation.  Best of all time is an opinion, not a fact, and he's stated his quite clearly.

He's not even the best of his era. I would take Staubach, Stabler, Bradshaw, Hart and Anderson over him in a minute. He was not well liked by his teammates. In the modern era with its bigger press presence and increased pressure to win big games, his legacy would be very different.

Hart and Bradshaw weren't even close to those other guys.  Bradhsaw absolutely got the job done when it counted but he really wasn't a fantastic passer by any stretch of the imagination.

  7. In five years when Brees, Brady, Peyton have retired, and Rodgers is on the decline, this league will belong to Luck and Wilson.  RG3 will be lucky to even be playing.

As someone with a track record of being mostly very generous towards Luck, Pagano, and the Colts franchise I often find it hilarious how bitter a select few of you guys come across about the 2012 honors and attention Griffin received.  There's no rivalry between the teams, so it's just straight up insecurity as far as I can tell.

I hope both Griffin and Luck have good, long careers and maybe one day there will be a legitimate cause for a rivalry.  Until then this sentiment is just silly, especially when directed at someone who goes out of his way not to mention Griffin at all unless it's already actually relevant to the discussion in a thread (hint: it was not in this one).

  8. Well I see we have another owner that tweets also.   :hmm:         I personally think it's tacky to tweet this instead of having a meeting with the coach.  Nothing like seeing on Twitter that you are loosing your job.  :slaphead:     I think a lot of things that owners tweet is tacky but that is my opinion.

Granato is a radio guy.  If the information is actually good (who knows) then it was leaked by someone privy to the meeting.

  9. Wilson was better last year and Wilson is still better this year.  He has more support, for sure, but he's the quickest thinking, quickest moving, and quickest to get the ball out with great touch on his throws of any of the 2012 QBs.

Luck still has a good deal more long-term upside but he needs to continue to improve on the accuracy.

  10. He's just like Kapernick (who's also been disappointing).  Defenses figured out the read option and now neither one of them are scary anymore.

The read option is the only play that made these guys scary.

Any RG3 or Kapernick highlight reel from last year has maybe a few good throws and about 20 different videos of them going a long way because of the read option.

No read option and neither one of them are scary anymore.  They are average at best.

Kapernick would have the same record as the Skins if he couldn't count on his offensive line dominating and Frank Gore putting up 100 yards a game.

There's a little merit to this although I'd say it's more true for Kaep than Griffin from what I've seen of both.  RG made some mind boggling throws last year even outside of the option and was superb on his ball placement in general.  This year he is just off much of the time, missing some throws he hit 100% of the time last season, and you can't help but feel that there's a substantial mental block of some sort.  Could be the knee, could be something else.

I'd hazard to guess that the hits (in the pocket, mind you) are definitely affecting him as of late and making him even more hesitant as a passer... but many of the hits he takes are strictly a result of how long he's holding the ball trying to locate a target.  Kind of a vicious cycle.

Oh... and Kaep's team is doing better because they have a quality defense.  Our rushing game is probably the best in the league and Morris has been substantially outperforming Gore.

I think he's been down/way down every game, and his stats get a bailout from prevent defense. I don't understand how you're qb can suck so bad with Morris beasting and feasting though

I doubt you've watched all four quarters of every game, then.  He's been running hot and cold, at times looking like he did last year and at times looking putrid.  Prevent defense didn't lead to the solid quality of QB play against the Lions, Bears, Chargers, and Vikings.

The Redskins have played in a lot of different time slots than the Colts , so I have seen a lot of RG3's games this year. My take would be to agree with what you have above. I think I saw all of the Philly game other than the two Washington TD drives. My take was he was terrible other than that last drive from the 5. He was very good there , just made a desperation throw he maybe didn't have to make. I only mention that game as Philly has been pretty bad vs the pass this and year and RG should have eaten them up considering how good the running game was.

I only mention the Philly game as I thought he was moving the needle up a bit before that game. But I guess a young QB can go up and down. Going forward , I'm like you ... who knows. IMO , I don't think Shanahan helped him at all. All that stupid SB talk probably added to the already too much pressure on RG3 to perform. He needs to evolve into a more traditional type NFL QB and I wonder if Shanahan has stunted that growth ?

The first 3 quarters of the Philly game were undoubtedly the worst he's looked this season.  None of the other games even come close.

I think Shanahan approached it the right way with him, honestly.  We have a traditional offense on top of the two read, read option type stuff and Griffin's had plenty of exposure to it.  The extent to which our offense is reduced to a simplified 2-read system in casual conversation is often overstated.  Griffin's level of execution has just been lacking in those areas.  Most of us Skins clearly overestimated his development during season one.  He needed that full offseason and then some to really work out his fluidity going through progressions and reading defenses.

Nonetheless, he should still be performing much better than he is.  As I've said before, he looks and plays like a QB who constantly feels hurried.  His lack of comfort is a stark contrast to his constant composure last season even against HEAVY pressure.

I am so-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o glad we picked Luck over RGIII. It is not only this year but the future seasons the Skins get to look forward to. RG is already throwing darts at the head coach. Good luck Washington.

We said something similar last season.  Things change year-to-year... don't count your NFL chickens before they hatch.

  11. Griffin is playing terribly.

At times.  He's been way up and way down between games and within a lot of individual games.  As I said before, though, he's also not getting a lot of help in some instances.

  12. The Redskins' record and the problems with our passing game in particular are part of a far more complex issue than just Griffin.  Griffin has not looked entirely himself for much of this season and neither has our interior offensive line or receiving corps.  Whether this is a matter of them overachieving last year, underachieving this year, or there being some deeper issue related to the coaching staff or locker room atmosphere is pretty much indeterminable at present.  Early next season will say a lot.

I will say that the stats are both unfair to and overly generous towards Griffin depending on how you break them down and what games you look at in particular.  Again, it's a complex issue and not something that is easily broken down even on film.

  13. He's still developing...He's not nearly as finished a product as Luck or Wilson..

......Griffin and Kap have used their athletic gifts as their main advantage..

Wilson and Luck have athletic gifts but they are secondary to their accuracy and footwork and other skill.

Griffin and Kap may catch up eventually

This is how I see things through 25 games of these guys...

Luck's ability to manage himself as a more traditional pocket passer is by FAR the best out of all of those guys.  He's probably got the best field vision and anticipation of the group.  His accuracy is not special, though.  I still actually consider it a weakness of his overall game.  If he was more consistent with his placement he'd look like a world beater but he's just not there (yet).

Wilson's best asset is his improvisational skills and ability to sense pressure around him.  The guy makes instinctive plays quickly both as a runner and a passer, manages not to take a lot of hits, and probably has the best touch on his intermediate passes.  He's easily the best looking overall of the group right now but he also probably has the best full complement of weapons on offense (they may not have any special receivers but they've got a bunch of guys who suit Russell well).

Griffin's overall arm talent is still head and shoulders above the rest.  He's got the best mix of pure arm strength and accuracy of the group.  Unfortunately, he's held back significantly by his inability to fluidly run through progressions and has strangely regressed in his ball distribution.  Last season he spread the ball around to everyone, this season he's seemingly locked on to Garcon and Reed to a fault.  Then again, there have been games this season where the offense has struggled to get receivers open and those are the two players we have who can be trusted to make contested catches.  Simply calling him a one read QB doesn't really describe the big problem at hand with his development as a pocket passer.  He can run through reads fine but is particularly bad at coming back to routes he's already checked.  If a route is open he throws it, if he anticipates it becoming open he stays on it instead of looking off until the time comes, and if he moves off of a read he almost never looks back to that receiver until things have completely broken down even if a window does present itself later (i.e., there are apparent limits to his anticipatory ability).  The most troubling thing if you're a Skins fan, though, is that he hasn't played with any of the fire or excitement he had last season, which is leaving a lot of room for people to speculate on his leadership ability and relationship with the coaching staff.

Kaepernick has just been a wholly unimpressive bit player in the 49ers machine.  It really feels like something about his game was figured out during the offseason and he's not adapted well.  Doesn't seem to respond very well to pressure and seems quite mediocre when a defense maintains discipline (i.e., he won't hurt you if you don't expose yourself to big plays).

  14. 4.  Man someone has to win the East...Cowboys?  Although as crazy as this sounds if the Giants win the rematch game with them I wouldn't completely rule out the Giants which I know is crazy but that division is awful...

There will be an NFC East team in the playoffs... but there will be no winner.

  15. He's better than Brandon Weeden that's for sure, and statistically he's never been that bad as people make him out to be considering all the injuries he's suffered behind careless teams that expected him to come out and be the next Warren Moon out of thin air.

It's the eyeball test that Campbell has consistently struggled with, not the statistics.

  16. Not really when you think about it. How do you intimidate a professional athlete? Not physically. Blackmail of revealing dirt, rather real or fake, would do it though.

If real, then it would suggest Martin suffered from clinical depression, and Incognito found out and was using it as ammo to push Martin around. No telling if its real or not though.

I wouldn't take physical intimidation off the table.  If you can count on someone not to retaliate out of a (perhaps misguided) personal moral/ethical code or personality defect (e.g., deeply ingrained, flawed coping strategies) then the fact that they could probably beat you up if they tried to becomes moot.

  17. Dont know how new you are around here, but Caldwell's name is mud as a HC in the indy fandom for a percieved lack of doing anything. He won a super bowl as OC of the Ravens last year, sure, but as a HC his resume basically consists of "I collected a paycheck while Peyton ran things."

Thats the perception of Caldwell, and now for some, Fox in Denver.

My post was basically a jab at that sentiment (which I am well aware of), although I've commented around here before that I do consider the Ravens' postseason offensive success to mostly be a fluke.

As far as Fox goes, I feel I should point out that the man's a defensive coach first and foremost.  He's actually got a pretty good track record of putting together quality defensive units... so while he might be very conservative in nature, he's not necessarily a bad guy to have paired with the more dynamic and prolific offensive stylings of a Peyton Manning.  He's got kind of a Marty Schottenheimer/Jeff Fischer thing going which is both very good and very bad if you're a Broncos fan.
