You can hire McDaniels and still run whatever defense you want.  Who knows, McDaniels himself might prefer the Seattle defense moving forward.  The idea that McDaniels will come here and run a carbon copy of every single thing Belichick has done in New England for the past 18 years...

    Well, that's unlikely to happen.

    We can dream.  :P

More seriously, enough Belichick tree coaches have gone to other areas and failed spectacularly that it's clear that there's something that man can do that nobody else really can copy.  I think he's got an intuitive ability to look at a player and quickly figure out the best situations to use them.  It's the sort of instinct that can not be taught.

  2. We could use a good checkdown/3rd down/passing back and don't really have one.  Kind of hoping that Rex Burkhead doesn't sign a team friendly deal in New England and hits the market due to the crowded stable in New England.  Burkhead isn't a great player but he's a solid professional who can do a bit of everything and expands the playbook with his presence.

  3. The offense can score enough points, especially with Luck, that a good defense can hold them in the game.  We are going to have to find value in the lower rounds if we want to compete and we can not plug all our holes out of the first three rounds so it comes down to whold the BPA is and where you're least willing to risk being disappointed.

Rather spend the top pick on defense, and look for value for the online in the mid rounds.  That's where I see our bggest need.  We can see improvement in this online without going he'll for leather at the very top of our draft stock.  If we can get a top RB, pass rusher or receiver we really need to do that and build out from there

Barkley's a big time stud, and if next year was our year to go all in for a ring I'd agree.

But I'm in the camp that would rather have an OT (ie Williams, McGlinchey) or a pass rusher (ie Chubb, Key) who plays a position that CAN'T be done by committee.  If there aren't players at those positions that grade out for a #3 pick come April, I'd be fine with trading down, as its much easier to find running backs later in the draft than pass rushers or OTs.  And running backs careers don't typically last as long.

Pass rusher yes, OTs of reasonable quality can be found lower in the draft queue.  With our other needs I think it would be a waste to spend a pick of that caliber on an offensive lineman when there's plenty of third round OL who can get the job done.

Personally I'd be looking to take that pick and trade it down, try to get 2 firsts or a mid teens first and a high second.  I'd also focus on using the draft mostly to build up the defense.

If our D hadn't gassed out in the 4th quarter we'd have had at least 4 more wins this year  This offense can work if the defense is strong, and they showed a few flashes.   This is also why I want a DC as our HC.  Build us up to a premium defensive team, and the offense will stand on its own.

Why does a guy who,has little experience deserve a shot?  He may turn out to be great, but his coaching resume is pretty flimsy at this point.

Loved him on Hard Knocks though.

I can think of a coach who was very poor for one team, then quit outright on another, and not only that, cost his third team a first round pick to acquire.

    He turned out all right.

The 'rest of Harrison's career' started yesterday and ends when the Patriots season ends.  He is in a good position to end that career hoisting a Lombardi and a middle finger to those he feels did him wrong.  He will leave it on the field every game until they carry him off.  Perfect late season pickup for the Pats.

I am looking forward to the highlight reel.

I wouldn't be quite so sure as you seem to be that Harrison is done at the end of the year. The contract he originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers ran through next year. I'm not saying it's definite but it don't rule out Harrison coming back in 2018. Especially if he looks good in the playoffs.

I apologize for the inconvenience.  so we can serve you better, please make your preferences clear. How much do you think we should be talking about NFL topics on an NFL forum? Since you clearly have a problem with the current quantity please be sure to provide a valid quantity in your reply. I breathlessly await your input on this subject

It was coaching. It was injury. We all agree on that

What coach is coming in who will do better than 3 playoff berths in 6 years and a winning record without a starting QB 1/3 of the time?

    That's the question

Well there was a team that lost their QB for one third of the season and nearly won out when he got back... but we don't like to think about them.

Personally I'd love to see the Colts pick up Matt Patricia but I don't see it happening.  McDaniels has name brand players on offense, especially the QB.  Patricia is stringing together a bunch of nobodies and learning at the feet of a guy who was a heck of a DC and is probably the greatest coach in the game today.

Guy comes into Foxboro and gets two sacks (one being a stripsack) on his first game.

    Guess Belichick's Hogwarts spell worked.

James Harrison is hardly the worst player Belichick has found a use for in his defense this year.  Not surprised Harrison put up some good results out of the box for a guy who knows how to literally throw together a defense at the last minute.

  10. If I was raiding the Patriots for coaching personnel right now, the guy I want is Patricia, not necessarily McDaniels.  I respect McDaniels' performance with a high powered offense, but we won't have that next year unless we hit a home run in the draft and get a clean bill of health from Luck, both things that can definitely wind up not happening for us.

Patricia meanwhile is somehow turning that defense, which has a strong secondary but is very VERY weak on the line, into something that can win football games.  Belichick is the master of bend not break defensive schemes and Patricia has had years to learn from the best.  His style fits what we need FAR more than McDaniels' does.

The trick is to get NFL football fan (because you're not trying to beat the NFL, just take their audience into the spring) and attract the WWE crowd, which is extremely loyal..

.....something like allowing viewers to vote on instant replay would be interesting

You are trying way too hard.

Just survive the first few years and carve out a niche where CFL players, UDFAs, former college stars and NFL has beens can show off their stuff.  The NFL will balk at first but eventually will start sending scouts to find talent to cheaply fill out the end of their rosters.

In the meantime the quality of the product needs to be somewhere around the level of the top NCAA leagues with maybe a mix of NFL CFL and NCAA rules.  It can be a testing ground for new equipment, tactics, coaches and playstiles in a clearly football centric setting.

Get there and the NFL may even adopt it as an unofficial development league and send talent to play there

  12. Again though if the guy isn't playing and isn't happy with not playing do the decent thing and release him.  The Steelers were in the odd position of trying to not have their cake and not eat it too, I can't fault Harrison for forcing them to either crap or get off the pot.

The Steelers were doing him some serious damage for next year with the game they were playing with him.  He's got maybe time left in his career for one more contract.

By plaing games and not letting nhim on Tuesday field the Steelers were preventing him from a shot at one last FA  paycheck.  If you're not gonna let him get a chance to earn it here, and he's not ready to just ride the pine and take his money, let him showcase what he has left for some other team

  13. The only difference I see in that picture is the guy on the right has maybe 10 more pounds of spare fat from not playing. That's not a bad thing either, a little extra padding can even prevent injury if you don't overdo it.

Bulking up can be dangerous during recovery from certain surgeries and I hope he's attending to strengthening his joints as well as the big muscles, that's the mistake that can cause your own body to tear itself apart.

That's not as dramatic as it looks.  It's like those before and after programs for fitness clinics.  Anything looks bigger with a tighter shirt, and everything looks bigger when superimposed on a dark background rather than a bright one.  It's one of the oldest tricks in advertising, color scheme has a massive effect on human perception and these 2 pictures are almost a case study of that.

I mean it's obvious that he's a little bigger, but the difference is nowhere near as dramatic as the color scheme makes you think.

It's simple. He was getting paid to be at those meeting and practices. He was throwing tantrums because he lost his starting job. It was not the Steelers fault he skipped out on the chances to regain his starting position. Instead of him doing the things that would have gave him a better chance or regaining his position he was too busy being a distraction.

The team repeatedly lied to him about getting him playing time.  Again, this isn't about starting, this is about getting any playing time at all and if they aren't going to do that they need to release the guy.  it reached the point where the only recourse he had in order to play was to engineer a situation that forced them to release him, so he did.  I can't fault JH too much for that, not if he still thought he had something to contribute and was getting strung along.

I mean if you're going to do that to a guy at least have the decency to tell him to his face that you don't plan to play him.  Gutless move by the Steelers organization to string the guy along like that.

Brady also got credit for the Falcons' playcalling (not running the clock out and kicking a FG, for example), you know.

He's also credited with holding the high-powered Rams offense to 17 points and a pick 6 on them in Super Bowl 36, while he torched the Rams for 130 yards and 10 points and got MVP because of it.

1: Brady got credit for, after the high powered Rams offense finally got in gear and tied the game up, leading a last second drive down the field for a game winning field goal.  It was an incredible performance made all the more impressive by the fact that he's at roughly the age and experience level that Jacoby Brissett is at right now.

2: Re: Falcons.  Brady got credit for being nearly flawless for the last quarter and a half and leading an offense that looked dead into the water to tie up the game and then win in overtime.  Some mistakes were required by the Falcons yes, but at the same time there is no denying that what Brady did in the last 25 minutes of that football game was legendary.  No one in the history of the NFL has ever done it before, and it may be a very, very long time before we ever see anyone do it again.

I think you are over blowing this up. The fan base are not the ones going out on the field.

Tomlin will have his team ready regardless of Harrison.

Here's why I disagree:  The Steelers coaches, players and ownership have all directly responded to this drama in ways that indicate that they are heavily upset.  That is incredibly stupid.  A good coach calms and detaches himself from the drama, a good coach never, EVER EVER feeds the drama.

The upshot is the Pittsburgh Steelers are not 100% focused on the game ahead of them, because we've already observed that some portion of their attention is focused on the New England Patriots and James Harrison instead.  We don't know to exactly what extent they're distracted and what the outcome of the distraction will be, but distraction itself is virtually confirmed at this point, and in the playoffs where every last detail matters, that distraction won't fail to have some kind of impact on the game.

One thing I've always admired about the Patriots is their ability to avoid the media drama, stay on message and focus on the battle they need to win next.  Mike Tomlin is not even trying to do this, and I bet my last dollar it'll affect their performance in the divisional round, if not directly against the Pats in the CCG.

  18. The Patriots just threw the Steelers an their fanbase into a frenzy.  Now instead of preparing for the playoffs, they're hurling invective at the Patriots and their new defensive end.

I don't think this will prove decisive, but as in most things, you accomplish what you focus on.  The Steelers are focused on burning James Harrison.  The Patriots are focused on winning playoff games.

  19. Keep him. One less problem to think about.  He's still good, even if maybe not great anymore.  Save our ammunition for dealing with the many far more pressing problems on this roster.

I think you read too much into what Buddy was saying.    He just said that he doesn't feel like Brissett inpires the team.  I would agree.

What I have seen in a season Brissett is that he is a good backup QB or a below average starter.

i think the Colts need to keep him as the backup for next season.

I think Brissett has done a lot of good on this roster.  As far as i'm concerned the team played a little over their heads at several points this year.  It wasn't enough to crack the win column more often than they did, but when a guy takes a nothing roster and puts up average numbers and it takes 4th quarter collapses to take him out in several games, I think it's possible to say that he had a positive intangible effect on that roster.

  21. 54 minutes ago, Buddy Lee said:

I actually like Jacoby but he has a propensity to never bring us Colts back.He seems to hold his head down. I like the guy but as far as inspiring his team... I just don't see it.

I don't honestly know what you're expecting?  Because he can't spin straw into gold he sucks?  He doesn't have the weapons, and no, he's not the kind of gunslinger who can win without them.  Frankly if he was, we wouldn't have been able to get him for Phillip Dorsett.

I think it's really *ic to meaure a quarterback solely based on the win column.  Quarterbacks can lose through no fault of their own, and the worse the roster around them is the more likely that is to happen.

The roster is a factor that you can't deny when assessing a quarterback, to fail to consider what he has to work with is simply asinine.  You can't give a chef a pile of crap and expect a chocolate cake.  Even the best need materials to work with,

You won't hear Brissett offering excuses, but the fact of the matter is that he was set up to fail for the most part.  Team was in tank mode, and I honestly think half the time the coaching staff was holding back at the end of games.  The fact that he nearly pulled off upsets in some of those games despite being set up to fail is moderately impressive.  I'm sorry he's not good enough to literally carry 10 other people, and a coach who may have had orders to lose, on his back on every single play, but if that's not good enough for you, hey, you know where the door is.

  22. 3 hours ago, Buddy Lee said:

is it fair to say if you wannt to lose by a small amount this is your guy? i don't really think that but he has to prove me wrong.

if your team's best feature is its average starterback, and literally every other facet of the team is below average, losing by a small amount isn't much to be ashamed of.

The Colts are on the bottom third of the league in nearly every category, and Brissett had been in the middle third of quarterbacks. Brissett's documented mediocricy actually represents one of the better faces of the team right now.  He is literally the least of our problems.

The injury to Luck has been a godsend if it means it wakes some fans up about the actual state of the roster.  We no longer have a magic fix-anything quarterback to hide our probolems and we now have to take the unheard-of, revolutionary step of actually fixing them.  Starting probably with the offensive line and the pass rush, both of which are incredibly dismal right now.

  23. On 12/24/2017 at 8:07 PM, oldunclemark said:

It doesn't matter how good Jacoby is because Andrew Luck is our starting QB.

    That's realistic..

Jacoby Brissett will never be the starting QB of the Indianapolis Colts

He really said that folks.  This year no less.  He said that this year.  He said that in a year when Andrew Luck had 0 starts and Brissett has had 14.

Until we have a better idea what we're getting out of Luck going forward, Jacoby Brissett is the starting quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts.  I don't think you can count on Luck until he's already back and producing.

after all we've thought he was coming back for months and months and he still isn't back.  When an injury leave keeps getting extended like this the news never winds up being great.  Even if it doesn't turn out that way we need to be braced for the idea of never seeing Andrew Luck on a football field again.  Greater careers have been ended over less than an injury that just won't heal right.
