  1. With saquon and nelson being the top 2 choices as the best players in this draft per these votes, its seems like more people would on board to choose either of them with our pick, regardless of which position they play. I know guard is not typically a highly coveted position, but quenton nelsons and saquon Barkleys dont come around every year either. If you have an elite talent available, i think you should choose him.

Very explosive for sure, but i worry about guys that catch with their body. I was going through highlights of some of the recievers from the article on nfl.com, and my favorite so far is daurice fountain of UNI who is apparently killing senior bowl practices. Same school as David Johnson. His coaches put him in the same category as Johnson in terms of his level of skill. He catches with his hands and goes up to get it really well. I don't know how to embed highlight videos, but check him out on youtube.

Apparently I do know how to embed a video.

  5. I agree that it is definitely a position that should at least be looked at. I came across a good one for the draft while watching the Notre Dame O-line.

    Durham Smythe.

He is a pretty solid run blocker. He's kind of under used in their offense, as a receiver, due to their commitment to the run and Equinimious St. Brown seeing a lot of the targets. But when he gets targeted, it's a catch. He catches EVERYTHING, and might have better hands than St. Brown. Check him out.

  6. Agreed. When I watch him, he reminds me of Barry Sanders in the way he evades defenders by setting them up, making them think he doesn't see them. That and his ability to make insane lateral cuts. I just wish he was a little bigger, but can definitely play. Wouldnt be upset if we wait on a running back early on and pick this guy up. I love saquon Barkley, but I think we should use the early pick on someone like Bradley Chubb, quenton Nelson, or minkah Fitzpatrick  and get a running back later.

I think the most important part is that you have to EXPECT that the opposition will make changes. You still attempt to execute your game plan but good coaching will try to take something away or exploit something that is working. So I think you discuss and gameplan what you think will continue to work well but also if they take something away what might that open up so you can counter. How many times do you see a good team like NE after say running the ball all first half come out in a 2 minute offense in the 3rd quarter or start throwing the ball on first down etc...or bring their backers or change up and start dropping them. Basically changing it up even if something was working well. Granted they can basically execute anything because of their qb but I would like to think we have some contingency plans for our team coming out of the locker room. Some teams if they just execute because of their talent they are going to win....we don't have that so we have to make up for the lack of talent by staying a step ahead...something I'm afraid this staff isn't great at (adjustments).

Very good point, I agree. And that's why a team like the rams who were awful last year with a very similar cast can go on to be one of the better teams in the league this year, going from an old school coach like Jeff Fisher who just wants to pound it down your throat all game even if the personnel doesn't allow for that kind of domination, to a brilliant young mind like mcvay who plays to his personnel's strength and can scheme guys open even if they aren't world beating talents. Wish we could interview that guy and then go find someone who would bring a nearly identical coaching style to the coltrs next year. That would be the best thing for this team

  8. I love Barkley as much as the next man, but our o-line is--to use a common term from the threads--a dumpster fire. Quenton Nelson is an animal and would be an enormous step forward to bringing this line to respectability. And besides that, there are many talented running backs set to be available later in the draft. To name a few:

    Derrius Guice

    Rashaad Penny

Mark Walton (looks like Barry sanders)

    Kalen Ballage

    John Kelly

    Bo Scarborough

And one  of my favorites, Kerryon Johnson. I just recently watched film on this guy and he immediately triggered a David Johnson comp for me.

Anyway, I probably forgot a couple other good backs too, so there is no shortage of talented back in this draft and I think our high picks would be best used on o-linemen.

Lately the coaches have done well (I’ll duck now).  You don’t adjust at the half when what you did was working.  You do have to react to adjustments, and that’s an issue when you don’t have the talent.

It’s not news to anyone that the game is matchups, right?  I give the coaches credit in the last few games for hanging with more talented teams that long.

What i need to look at on this game is what happened to holding the edge.  They did so well until the 4th.  IMHO, this game wasn’t on the coaches.

I agree if something is working you don't go away from it, but you do have to be creative in finding ways to do the same thing. It seems like we have no more than about 5 different running plays that we use and if we have the lead, teams know were going to run it (right up the gut)  every first down, for example. But instead you could use some misdirection to make the other team think your going to do something else and make it a little easier to sustain the style you want to play. Like maybe send Hilton across like your going fly sweep with him then hand it off up the gut, or have multiple actions going on behind the line of scrimmage to create a mesh. This idea was working perfect in KC on their 6 win streak. Not sure what happened to them since then, but that's another thread. Eagles are another team that excels at being unpredictable. Same with the Rams. But, my point is if you have a predictable game plan, at least have an unpredictable set of plays to run.

PS nothing against your opinion Smonroe, and this game definitely is not a game where coaching was the biggest issue, since the coaches didn't fumble on the goal line, couldn't block, and couldn't hold the edge for the better part of a quarter. But your response was a good platform for mine.

  10. I actually think we have a decent shot at winning any of our remaining matchups, even the jaguars. We have hung tough with every team since the seahawks and even gave them a run for a half. It doesn't mean much since we have lost the majority of those games, but it is encouraging that we have at least been in position to win a lot of our previous games. That's more than a team like, say... the browns can claim. #sorrynotsorry

It gives me hope for next year.

  11. It's bad when it only week 8 and you're ready for the offseason... oh well.

This mock was done on fanspeak using their bigboard.

    1. Minkah Fitzpatrick CB/S - no trades allowed, but think it would be a good move for us to trade down and get this guy along with an extra pick(if we end up picking 4th, like this site projects). Could be a #1 corner as well as a fill in safety if a starter is injured.

    2. Billy Price C - under the condition he or ryan kelly can transition to guard. Reinforce the line.

    3. Alan Lazard WR - Big playmaker for the offense. Recently watched film and liked what I saw.

4.Cameron Smith LB - both LB spots are a mess. Here's the first upgrade. Not the fastest, but is instinctual and a right-place-Right-time kind of guy.

    5. Teagray Scales LB - second LB upgrade, but more of an athletic type to give the defense flexibility. Very intruiging film.

    6. Tony Adams OL - I would use every pick on the o-line if we didn't have so many other needs. Here is a body to protect 12.

7 Rashaad Penny RB- Not sure how I managed to get this guy in the 7th. I absolutely love his film and wouldn't be surprised to see him go 2nd or 3rd round. Either way, here is a battering runner with a good all around game, good vision, and excellent balance to complement Mack's style.

If we trade down in the first and select Minkah Fitzpatrick, maybe we can also get an OT or another WR With whatever pick we could get in addition to the lower first rounder. something to that effect.

    Feedback welcome.

  12. Here is another:

    1: Harold Landry Edge

    2: Quenton Nelson OG

    3: Shaun Dion Hamilton LB

    4: Dante Pettis WR

    5: Kalen Ballage RB

    6: Rashaan Evans LB

    7: David Bright OT

I'm not fimiliar with Shaun Dion Hamilton or David Bright but I tried to fill needs. We Filled big needs with fantastic players in first 2 rounds and get some value in rounds 4, 5, and 6. Not sure why some of the players are rated so low by them, but I'll take it.

  13. 4-Round Mock:

    1: Saquon Barkley

    2: Quenton Nelson

    3: Azeem Victor

    4: Josey Jewell

Done on Fan Speak so take with a grain of salt. A lot of names on the board that I didn't expect in the later rounds. They have us choosing 8th overall.

Transcedent talent at top of round one, to go along with, in my opinion, an all-pro guard in round 2.

I believe WR is a legitimate need for us and really wanted one in this mock, but value wasn't there. Both ILB spots need upgraded though so...

    other names I like:

    James Washington WR

    Arden Key Edge

    Denzel Ward CB

    Travaris McFadden CB

    Mark Walton RB

    Derrius Guice RB

    Royce Freeman RB

    Nick Chubb RB

    Kallen Ballage RB

    E. St. Brown WR

    Conner Williams OT

    Mike McGlinchey OT

    Late Round Sleeper:

Richie James WR (slot guy with good hands and slippery route running/RAC ability)

    Feedback?

  14. Long time reader, first time poster, all the way from Oregon! I have to say that I have been praying for this announcement since about 5 minutes into the Rams game...it was very hard to watch! Not that I'm expecting him to light it up, but I think he gives us a chance to win or at the very least make it interesting to watch.
