  1. Not sure we will want to go after a free agent pass rusher, not saying it's not a need, it's a huge need, but they command such a high dollar.  Why spend so much of our cap money on one guy, when it is obvious that we have holes at all three levels.

One of the big questions this off season is: where to play Geathers, that has to be settled.  Do you play him at safety or ILB?  You play him at safety resign Butler to play alongside of him, let Green develop, and resign Adams on the cheap for veteran leadership.  I could deal with that on opening day.  You move Geathers to ILB, now I'm not so sure about our safety situation, and we address it with the draft and or free agency.  Geathers is a talent, who I believe will only get better with time, but he needs to focus on one position.  Once they figure him out and where he needs to play, I believe we will see what direction we will go in free agency.

  2. I'm gonna say, we are not that far off.  That being said, if we can crush it in free agency and the draft this year, I believe we can win the division and make a run deep in the playoffs. For instance, two out of the four teams still playing this coming weekend had the 20th or worse ranked defense in the league.  That being the Pack, and the Falcons, and the Falcons are at 27 if I remember correctly.  We could easily move up 8-10 spots defensively ranking wise and contend.  Maybe not be the 85 Bears, but at the end of the day be just good enough to win the Super Bowl, and that is how teams are ultimately judged.

  3. Some good insight from the forum today.  The biggest thing to me, and Superman commented on this, is the below average O-line play, and we run a vertical passing attack.  True, Luck at times holds the ball to long, other times the routes the receivers are running require him to hold the ball longer.  To help the O-line out utilize the short passing game, and use it to set up the deep pass.  At times it seems we have that backwards.

I would find it interesting on how and or when we used those formations/plays at other times during those games.  Plays are ran to setup other plays, you look at defensive tendencies and how they react to certain plays/formations, and even personnel groupings.  Maybe the coaches saw something earlier in the game that led them to call these formations/plays at this point in the game.

Either way thanks Super, and all the quality posters for the time you have spent on stuff like this, it adds just another element to watching games, and being a fan.  GO COLTS!!!

  4. Heck, I'm all for it. I much rather the front office do this, than to sit back and do nothing at all.  That one time you catch lightning in a bottle, makes it all worth it.  So take that chance, and at the end of the day if makes the team better, let him play.  We could always use a stud special teamer!

  5. I would think that there is more to it than, oh it's 2nd and 40, let's be conservative, or chuck it from the cheap seats.  I believe there is a lot more to it than that.  Like: what is the score, are we up, tied, behind? At what point in the game are we: is it early in the first, or late in the second and we get the ball to start the third?  During a game you are gonna more than likely get "x" amount of possessions, the colts decided on that particular possession, at that juncture of the game, and the score being what it was, to be conservative.  A ton of factors can play into one series.  Personally, the defense was playing well, no sense in taking an unnecessary risk at that point in the game.

  6. The D was better across the board today.  And I believe that the chargers had the top rated offense in the league, granted only after two games.  Only giving up 12pts on D today, I'll take that.  Now we can get guys conditioned, continue to get guys healthy, and maybe have a little something for these teams we are playing.  The defensive cord. did say the defense we saw the first two games was nothing like he wanted to play.  Still would like to see more pass rush though.

  7. Can't give up draft picks, especially in the early rounds, and we don't have the people to pull a player for player trade.  So I believe that those options won't work.  Trying to find an option on a practice squad, every team in the NFL is doing that as we speak, so that's a long shot, so I doubt that would happen.  Even if it did, they are on the practice squad for a reason.

An option, but not liked by many, but if it worked would pay huge for us.  Give Mr. Hardy a call and "kick the tires".  Look at it like this, he comes in and we sign him, Mathis and some of the other aged veterans help him out on and off the field.  Hardy is signed to a 3yr. production based contract, with clauses in place that say, you screw up you get nothing.  Next years draft class is supposed to be full of pass rushers, we grab one in an early round, and that would solve a huge hole as far as pass rushes.  Not only for this year possibly, but also for several years to come.  Not condoning Hardy's past, but he alone is the only person minus a huge trade of sorts, that would give us the biggest impact.

  8. I'm holding out hope that some of the problem with Mathis is his toe issue he's having.  If it is the big toe, that can cause all sorts of problems.  Mix that with old age and we have a big problem.  Getting some guys back and healthy will help tremendously, but it's not the cure all.  There is still the glaring problem going forward, no true young pass rushers.

So....  Do we give Mr. Hardy a call?  I say yes and here is why.  Unlike Dallas, I believe we have the right kind of looker room or the right mix of players to help him toe the line.  I would like to believe that he is at a point in life and career that he understands what he has lost, and also what he could get back.  Look at it this way.  He comes in, Mathis and Cole take him under there wings.  He learns from them on and off the field, and gives that one thing we truly need, a pass rush.  I would hope we would sign Hardy to a 3yr.  production based contract.  No hidden nonsense, it says if you mess up, you are done.  No excuses!!  We draft a young pass rusher in Rd. 1 of next years draft.  That would give us some needed help in an area that we are desperate in.  Also, I am in no means saying anything he has done in the past is all right, but people do and need a third, fourth, tenth chance sometimes.  Several people said no to Incognito, but now they wished we would have gotten him.

  9. Getting healthy is important but that is only part of it. We can all agree that we have had several guys miss extensive time due to injuries/suspension.  It is gonna take time to get these guys into game shape, look at Langford for example, he missed what 4wks and been back the last two, and still I haven't heard his name called on Sunday.  Nor has he had an impact on very many if any plays yet.  Right now he's just not the same player.  Can he become what he was last year, I hope so, but being in training room shape is totally different than being in game shape.  Let's say we do get everybody back this week, except for Jones, it might take three weeks for us to see a big difference on the defensive side of the ball.  True we will see some improvement immediately, but down the road I'm hoping for a huge difference!

  10. The kid can catch the ball well out of the backfield for sure, but it's almost like his brain is working faster than what his legs can function.  Almost every time he seems to trip himself up, by what was coming out in colts camp, I paid a little more attention to him.  It's uncanny how many times he seemed to stumble even before contact.  I hope with time maybe he can overcome this, he might turn into a descent third down back for us.

  11. If the Colts can draft a true pass rusher, that would help him more than anything.  Give the other team that one person that they have to double team, and I believe Anderson will excel.  He is very smart, uses his hands wonderfully, and has a good motor, he will figure it out.  Just give him some time to get healthy, I believe he could be the steal of last years draft.

  12. As the game went along, I thought the o line played better and better, both in pass pro, and run blocking.  Also they were all healthy after the game, the offense as a whole finished the game healthy.  This is huge in giving us continuity going forward.

  13. Injuries are very difficult to overcome, add to that Langford just came back from a 4wk injury, then we had rookies and people just signed playing some serious snap counts, and to top it all off, we lose a couple of players to injury.  It could have been a lot worse.  They did get some stops to help us get back in the game, but couldn't get the last stop, and I'm sure they were gassed.

The pass rush was concerning, you can mask a lot of problems with qb pressure, and we had little to none.  There is no easy answer for this.  Do we make the call, and by call I mean Greg Hardy, he is the only person off the street, on a practice squad, who can truly help.  Even then, he will take a few weeks to get into playing shape/learn the playbook.  Yes I know!!  When looking at the debacle in Big D, they did not have the locker room to bring in this type of person, lack of leadership on the field/locker room.  We have a very veteran locker room, guys who I believe you tow the line for.  You sign him to a very incentive laden contract, and put him on a very short leash!!  No I am not condoning his past, but I have also come up short in being the best person I can be.  Thankfully I have been giving multiple chances to prove myself, and have given multiple chances to prove the majority wrong.  Yes, at times I have been burned, and there were stiff consequences for those decisions.

  14. The scariest thing about this whole offseason is this: we let Chuck walk, we keep Grigson, Big Jim needs to make a splash in his coaching search so he goes hard after Payton.  We end up giving draft picks to the Saints for Payton, who is still under contract.  Payton gets here and he wants personnel and coaching control, so Grigson is gone.  This thing could snowball quick..  Welcome to the offseason, COLTS NATION!!

  15. I can go either way with this.  For the right money he would be an upgrade, his age does scare me.  Understand, in 12yrs. he has only been to the playoffs 2 times.  Would he play for less money for a chance at a deep playoff run, or is it all about the money and who pays up.  He lost 3 fumbles this past year, 6 in the past 11yrs.  Is that a sign of things to come, or just a freak thing?  I don't know.

I think there might be some options out there that would be as good if not better.  For one, Marshall if he gets released.

  16. Suh, I'm sure would be an awesome signing.  There are just to many areas that we could upgrade for same amount of money we would pay for one man.  By chance, if he were to underperform or get injured, it would put us in a similar situation we are in now due to Mathis getting hurt.  With Mathis we were so dependent on him as a pass rusher, when he went down, the pass rush suffered.  To the point of being nonexistent.  You give Suh all the money, and the quality around him suffers due to lack of money, we would be so dependent on him, I believe there would be no difference in what we have now as a defense.

Look at signing Dan Williams to upgrade the nose tackle position.  Letting Chapman and or Kerr rotate in and get experience.  I like Jared Odrick as a replacement for Redding(retirement) gets after the passer but stuffs the run.  Then maybe look at the LB position or safety.  Surely we wouldn't strike out on two/three free agents?  We upgraded the defense as a whole, not just one position.

  17. I read a report from cbssports.com, that said Gosder  had his knee scoped, but was also dealing with groin and shoulder injury this season.  The article went on to say that he should be fine, and ready for offseason programs.  If that is the case, bring him back.  There is not a free agent RT that would be such a huge upgrade, or better option imo.  Address the guard spot in free agency, then in the later rounds pick-up a guard/tackle.

  18. Every team does that, some even lose to .500 and under teams. Whats your point?

Is this: who really cares what a team was ranked before, after, during, etc.  as far as stats.  We have beat two very good teams in Cincy, and Baltimore, lost to two really good teams in Denver and Philly.  Stats are so overrated.  People are going to look and say this team is this or this team is that.  We either play good enough to win or we don't.  That's all I'm saying.

  19. No doubt we were the dominant team today.  BUT, and no I'm not that guy, it was a home game.  Personally before I crown them anything I want to see it on the road consistently.  It's one thing for somebody to come to our house and we punch them in the mouth, it's another for us to punch a team in the mouth in their own house.

I'm not sure the Jags count(?)

  20. Right now we are first in pts, ypg, passing, and 17th in rushing.  Yes I would like rushing a little higher, but it is still well over 100 yards a game, enough to keep the defense honest.  The way it is set up now is working, lets not change it, because if it had that much affect on the defense, then seattle, san fran, carolina, would have better offensive numbers than they have right now.

  21. In 2013 the avg. passer rating on rollouts was 96.6, compare that to 86.9 on just straight drop backs.  Also nfl coaches called 986 rollouts/18,127 dropbacks, which equals to 1 rollout for every 18 dropbacks.  The Seahawks called the most with 73 rollouts/370 dropbacks or 1 out of every 5 dropbacks.  Wilson's rollout percentage was 134.4 to 101.3

yards per completion were 11 on rollouts to 11.6 on dropbacks.  Qb's had a 6.8 td percentage on rollouts compared to just 4.3 on dropbacks.  They also had 1.4 int percentage compared to 2.9. That's like 5-1td/int ratio to 3-2 td/int ratio.

Maybe we should use the rollout more...
