The winners of the leftovers and unwanteds.... yippeeeeee!

Let's wait until any of them make the 53 man roster before getting excited about this.

No disrespect intended here...just a difference in opinion, but I say let's get excited about all of them, until they are cut. It's more fun that way. Let's root for them because they are underdogs and 'feel good' stories.

Sure we can wait to see if they make the 53 man roster, and then wait to see if they play, and then wait till year 3 until we can really judge them -- or we can be fans and root for them now, because they are now Colts.

No one ever tried to help Mays get comfortable in coverage. They just sent him out there to play the Bam-Bam role and then got frustrated when he was taken advantage of in space.

But really, Mays and Green aren't that similar. I'd compare Mays to Jeremy Cash.

    Superman to the the rescue!

Thanks again, but I do find it hard to believe that knowing that Mays' strength was his ability to fly around and use his big body to punish offensive players and his weakness was coverage, that the teams that have worked with him have not tried to address his weakness. I think Mays, like many other very good/great athletes have a hard time adjusting to playing in the NFL. It's much more sophisticated than they may be used to, and that's where the great players are separated from those who are great athletes.

I'm afraid that my fear with TJ Green is that he may be an athletic freak, but might not have the instincts, and knowledge.

Please know, this is just my fear. Things could turn out differently, but taking a guy in the 2nd round without much experience in that position has me worried. It appears that he was drafted on his potential rather than his actual play or game tape.

  3. It's been a tough off-season for Luck. He got along really well with Fleener and Whalen, who are no longer with the Colts. And aside from his Stanford teammates, he got along well with Holmes. I'm sure he has other friends on the team, but this has to be a little heart breaking for him. He'll be fine however.

Although he will now have better protection, he is learning the business side of the NFL.

  4. Honest question: What makes TJ Green different from Taylor Mays? Mays was incredibly fast, and 6'3" and had all of the physical tools that you would look for, he just didn't have the understanding of the game.

    Draft Profile: NFL.com

Mays has an outstanding combination of size, strength and athleticism for the safety position. He possesses excellent speed, quickness and burst for his size, which makes him a versatile player who could fit in several different schemes. He has good instincts to attack the alley as a run defender and can make plays in the passing game as a deep safety. He tends to be too aggressive with the ball in the air, trying to make the big hit instead of making a play on the ball. He can be inconsistent with his angles and technique but relies on his great athleticism to recover and make the play. Mays will be highly coveted in this year's draft if concerns about his overall mental makeup are answered.

Is TJ Green a better prospect? I'm worried because the NFL is littered with guys with size, speed, and incredible athleticism, and all they have to do is learn to play -- which is much easier said than done.

  5. A lot of people are taking the 'let's wait and see' approach, and that's fine. However, ask yourself this:

    1. The Jaguars had a potent offense last year, but they did not have a good defense.. What would it take for them to be a good team this year?

    a) Through Free Agency and the draft, the Jaguars added a ton of talent to their defense. They now appear to be a well-balanced team.

    2. The Titans had a good defense last year, and a decent offense. What would it take to make them better?

    a) The Titans added to their O-line and RB corps. Their receiving corps still appears to be an issue, and they have added to their defense as well. I expect them to be better, but not there yet.

    3. The Texans just needed a franchise QB and a receiver opposite Hopkins. Have they done enough to get better?

    a) The Texans have a good defense. It will get even better if the Texans offense can get better, and allow the defense some time to rest. They have made an attempt to improve the receiving corps through the draft and if Osweiler can become their franchise QB, then the Texans will compete for the division title every years. As it stands, they have won the division 3 of the past 5 years.

  6. With this year's draft, we should be set at O-line for some time. This will free us up to draft pass rush and defense heavily next year.

I give the draft an A. It addressed a major weakness, and it will improve our rushing and passing game. We already had the skill players and now we have our hard-nosed O-linemen.

Okay, nostradamus. I'm sure you have it all figured out. And Billings is gonna be amazing from day 1, right?

    Your expectations are naive.. bro.

Billings just has to be a better player than Green for this pick to be a mistake. I don't think Green sees the field this year aside from special teams, while Billings will most likely be in the D-line rotation.

You don't even lie good. lol

    Here's proof for you:

In 2005, Robert Turbin was a junior at Irvington high School, also my alma mater. Below is the roster for the team, (data from Max Preps). Robert Turbin wore #6, and the other RB, Stephen Lee, (the senior) wore #2.

    http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/irvington-vikings-(fremont,ca)/football-fall-05/roster.htm

As I had mentioned, the other RB was smaller but very fast. He attended the Palo Alto NIKE training camp. He ran a 4.42 40-yard dash. He is listed at 5'7'', but I think he's actually smaller than that. Demarco Murray, the newly acquired Titans Running Back also attended that camp and Stephen Lee actually ran a  faster 40. He was only beat out by Jeremy Ross, a receiver that is now in the NFL.

So, for Robert Turbin as a junior, it was not a big deal to be the second best RB on the team behind a guy that was a senior and had track speed. Overall, everything worked out for Robert -- he's an NFL player.

That's awesome that you had a chance to coach him.  This board has some really great resources in its members.  Thanks for sharing.

On a side note, is the following excerpt accurate?

    This is from Wikipedia:

"Turbin played high school football at Irvington High School in Fremont, California.  He was named first-team all-league running back as well as an all-league defensive back as a senior, and earned the league Defensive Player of the Year award. He rushed 143 times for 1,232 yards and 14 touchdowns and had nine receptions for 103 yards, and defensively, he recorded six interceptions."

I'm not questioning you or calling you out at all, I'm just wondering how he earned the first-team all-league RB accolade despite the fact he wasn't even the best RB on the team.  Looks like he averaged a little less than 9 YPC.

The except is correct. He was a very good player -- someone who could do it all. He could run, catch, block, and play defense lights out.

When he was a junior, he was the fly back, while the other player was the RB. (That is the year where the other player was considered the better RB). That year, Robert player a dual role as a RB and receiver on offense (flyback). Robert's senior year, he played RB and DB and was first-team all-league.

  10. In high school, we ran the Wing-T offense. Robert Turbin was the 'flyback' (mix of RB and receiver) and probably not the best RB on the team. The best RB was only 5'5" and could fly, but he was too small to go onto the next level. Robert gained a huge amount of muscle mass in college. I coached JV when he was on varsity so I got to watch him play quite a bit.

    I seriously wanna know.

Months ago Irsay and Grigson hinted that we would try to get younger and that the main focus will be on the draft. Not only that, but I saw someone post on here that we only had 15-20 million in cap space, which isn't exactly a lot. You can't buy many free agents with that cap space.

I think that you may be looking at the forum's reaction and basing it on this year alone?

Thanks to Grigson and Co. we've have had good cap management and we've had money to spend in previous years. However, Grigson decided to spend the money unwisely in some cases. So although we had plenty of money, we do not necessarily have the added talent to show for it and there are still holes to fill. Last year, Grigson added players like Herremans, Johnson, and Gore through FA --none of which are a part of our future plans. Gore may be done after this season.

So coming into this year, and understanding that we were players in FA in recent years and that we have holes to fill, many of us expected to partake in FA, but not be major players due to cap restrictions. Adding a few pieces through FA (1 or 2 signings - aside from Tolzien) and then through the draft was what we had in mind.

    How is that unreasonable?

  12. My Free Agency grievance is that the Colts did not get better today. (Many more days to come, I know).

    1. We lost our starting TE, (Fleener)

    2. We lost our starting Safety (Lowery).

    3. We stand to lose our starting MLB (Freeman)

    4. We are still relying on aged veterans to fill our pass rush need, (Mathis, Cole)

    5. Frank Gore is not getting younger and haven't added anyone.

    6. Haven't added anyone to help an already poor O-line.

    7. We stand to lose our starting CB (Toler) without a replacement.

I wasn't expecting to address all of these issues through FA, but some at least. So, how have we gotten better today?
