  1. Those of us in Tennessee were wondering which one of you to root for, either Indy or Houston.  Houston has the easier schedule but Indy has beaten us twice this year.  Regardless the best scenario is to win out and control our own destiny and that happened today in Nashville.  We didn't play well on offense in the second half....most of us would have said that if we knew that Mariota would go 6-20 for 88 yards passing that this is a loss.  But our defense was playing out of their minds.

KC in Arrowhead will be the ultimate test.  I think the offense will play better but we have to play a complete game in all 3 phases.

Tennessee won't beat the broncos their defense is still top notch and titans pass isn't all that we need houston to keep losing we have the tiebreaker against the titans

The Titans playoff scenario is to win 3 of the next 4 (splitting the Denver and KC game) and beating both JAX and Houston.  After that, we'd still need help (Indy and Houston dropping a key game or two).

This is an interesting post. Seems your thinking is that the Colts will come in with a bad gameplan, which will help the Titans win. Personally, I'm hoping the Colts have a good gameplan, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Always good to have fans of opposing teams, by the way.

Bukafax is a regular contributor on the Titans forum.  He's always a good read.

The Titans aren't a bad team on the road.  Heck the Green Bay game was almost a road game with all the Cheeseheads that descended on Nashville.  But again, this is Lucas Oil Stadium where we've never won.

I agree on the "watch Kevin Byard" comment.  Probably the only real surprise with him is that he doesn't have an INT yet.  He set the school record at MTSU and he's been picking up the NFL safety position really fast, gaining more and more playing time every week.  The coaches really like him and he looks like a solid pick from last year's draft.  As he gets better, so does the secondary.

In 4 games that the Titans lost, Mariota threw a couple of picks or gave up a defensive TD due to a turnover and hopefully that continues.

Mariota's turnovers this year have had a remarkable amount of bad luck.  The number of pick-6's on INTs or scoop and scores on fumbles is ridiculous.  At least two of the loses this year could attributed to that alone.  Thankfully, the trendline on this seems to be improving.

But the Titans fans that were posting on this article were dogging on us(as were other fan bases)  saying the game will be theirs for the taking. I personally find this funny(I know they have improved as a unit offensively) considering they couldn't pull out a W in their house.

I'm not sure whom you are speaking of but it certainly wasn't me.  Are we playing better?  Absolutely.  But we're still a .500 ball club right now facing a team that has historically had our number.  We've never beaten Andrew Luck.  We've never won at Lucas Oil.  10 straight losses.  And back in week 7, the Colts beat the Titans with only Hilton and Doyle to throw to. (yes, I know, saying "only" Hilton doesn't give him his due).

The problems of the last game were an inability of the offense to maintain drives early on, resulting in field goals.  We never led in that game.  For a team that allowed Luck to be a pinata for much of the season, Indy's O-line all of a sudden looked a lot more stout.  We failed to get the the QB and to make adjustments when we weren't succeeding.

Mariota didn't have a terrible game but it wasn't a great one.  He put two footballs on the ground, losing one and we can't have that and win against a team like Indy.  Murray had a good statistical running game but Henry was barely used.

We have to start fast like we've done in recent weeks.  We hung three TD's on Green Bay before they had an answer and then we hung two more before the end of the first half.  We can't afford to turn the ball over.  And the defense has to step up and do better, both on the line (which was a surprise in the last game) and the secondary (which wasn't).

    Worried. I am worried.

Mariota has his limitations but their ground game is legit and they have a good line. I've watched a few games of theirs in the last few weeks and they look like a different team than the one we played a while ago.

Demarco Murray and Derrick Henry could make this a rough night.

Different team?  More like an evolving team.  But we are hanging some pretty interesting offensive numbers on people in recent weeks.  Not sure it lasts but it has put the league on notice.  And while our secondary is still a big problem, keep an eye out for Kevin Byard, our rookie safety.  He's coming along very fast.

What has me worried?  We come out slow, Mariota comes out inaccurate or turns the football over a few times.  Then we'd be screwed.  Also, Luck has a healthier team around him with all of his primary targets expected to play (unlike the last game where he made do with Hilton and Doyle and still beat us).

To me this is the anti-Green Bay game, which should scare the heck out of any Colts fan.  Before the GB game I said the Colts may win it simply because nobody expects it and they seem to play well and surprise when they are under the gun and people are doubting them.  Tennessee?  Quite the opposite.  People will expect it.  they are coming off a great performance in GB.  How will the Colts respond?  Who knows?  But it would not surprise me in the least if they come out slow off the bye and never really get going after reading how great they played in GB.  Not saying Colts won't win, just wouldn't surprise me if they didn't.

I know how the Titans are responding.  Coach Mularkey gave the team Tuesday off as a reward.  Monday is a regular off-day.  The entire team on Monday showed up anyway to work out and review tape.  I suspect the facility is full of people today too.

They'll try to amp up the blitzing.  I've seen commentary from Mularkey speaking on how they'll probably come with an entirely different game plan and tighten up the coverage somehow.  To me that's code word for we want to bring pressure.  I think they feel more confident about it after seeing how many times they got pressure on Aaron Rodgers. I don't think they have the horses in the secondary to carry out the game plan, and I think we have much faster and better receivers than Green Bay.  Not only that but 3 solid tight ends to make use of.

I didn't see enough from the Titans run defense last game to make me feel like we couldn't be successful on the ground if we had to pound it for a while.  Overall I think we have more weapons than the Packers and their D has too many warts.  All we got to do is tighten up on some of the third and longs we let up.  Also do a little bit better job bottling up the run game here or there and I believe we will be fine. Last but not least we need to play a clean football game as far as the penalties and turn overs.

The last game plan resulted in a loss.  So yes, I would expect changes.

I'm not sure if we'll amp up blitzes as much as trying to disguise blitzes better.  But that's still hard to do with a QB like Luck.  But we had decent success against Rodgers last week.

Gore ran for 61 yards last game.  I'm more worried about us defending the pass.

Turnovers is our big key.  We're not built to come back from those kind of mistakes.

Somehow they managed to sack MM 3 times and pressure him mutiple times as well, lol.  They're going to need to do the same again this weekend. . . somehow.

I hope the D continues to play like it did the first 3 quarters of the Packers game but I have a feeling this ones going to be a barn burner.

Our O-line is stout but the Colts game in Nashville was one of their weaker performances.  And Mariota didn't read the pressures as well.  But what was inexcusible was allowing Luck to basically go untouched the whole game when we knew that the Colts O-line had a pretty porous reputation.  Once Luck had lots of time, our secondary was toast.

Thanks for the post. Living in Paducah KY I get most of your games down here and it is clear that your starting to develop an identity on offense. Mariota can go either way. When he is accurate that offense runs very well. The OL definitely keeps things moving downhill. Honestly I see this team trying to mirror the Cowboys. Get that running game going...build that OL and protect Mariota. The defense has a few playmakers rushing the passer but the secondary can be had. It takes time to build a great team but they seem to be taking steps in the right direction. I think we have enough talent that we should win the game but its nice to see you guys leap frog Jacksonville. For all the hype they have gotten for their splashy FA and drafts lately its clear that Tennessee has a better model for building success. I'll be at the game and hope to see two hungry teams duking it out!

As time go on, fewer and fewer people are griping about Mariota's accuracy.  The issue now is turnovers (INTs + fumbles).  It's statistically glaring now (especially fumbles) but it's not unlike many other QBs who became elite including Luck.  And he's only thrown 3 INTs in the last 6 games, two of which came in the San Diego game two Sundays ago.  Mariota is getting better at throwing balls away to live to fight another down, versus forcing things.   Coach Mularky spoke today about one drive down to the red zone where the 1st down pass clearly wasn't there and Mariota threw the ball away.  On third down, he connected for the TD.  But if it weren't for a good decision on first down, the third down pass wouldn't happen.

The Cowboys is an interesting comparison.  Dak Prescott clearly walked into a much better team, much like Osweiller had in Denver last year.  Both the Cowboys and Titans have Pro Bowl running backs and great young QBs.  The Dallas receiving corps are solid but aren't setting the world on fire and Dez Bryant isn't having a Dez Bryant year.  But add up passing and rushing and right now, the Cowboys are #5 in total offense.  Defense is #13 which together wins a lot of games.  The Titans are on fire for offense currently ranked #2(!!!) for total offense but lagging badly on defense (#27).  That's a recipe for a .500 football team.

Maybe the titans will score 3 points after getting 47 this week; law of averages in NFL.

Maybe but that's not the trend.  In 10 games, we've scored 25 points a game or more.  The last three games have been 35 points or more.

The Titans have been a .500 team in the last four games including the Colts loss in Nashville but everyone thinks that the team continues to improve and therefore you guys are probably getting an improved opponent next Sunday.  Green Bay was considered a statement game around here since it was the first time that this team (Mariota era) has beaten an elite QB.  Granted, Green Bay isn't the team of recent years but any team with Aaron Rodgers is extremely dangerous.

It used to be that we had to rely on our defense long enough that we might score enough points to eke out a win.  That's not the case anymore as the offense is doing a really good job of putting points on the board.  Demarco Murray is only behind Dallas' Elliott for rushing for the season.  Delanie Walker is again playing at a Pro Bowl level for a TE.  The receiving corps is showing signs of life.  And our starting O-line is stout, allowing Mariota to deal.  And speaking of Mariota, the man is deadly in the redzone.  He's currently 76% for scoring a TD in the redzone, which leads the NFL.  Even more impressive?  He's never been picked off in the redzone in his short career.

Our weaknesses?  The defensive secondary is still suspect.  They hadn't had a defensive takeaway in like...forever until Green Bay.  But when the offense is moving, their spirits generally rise and they play better than their ability.  Mariota still has bad tendency for turnovers but this past Sunday he was perfect.  Special teams had been a sore subject (and probably lost two games this year) but they did recover a muffed punt catch by Green Bay yesterday that led to points.

So now we face the elite QB that's in our own backyard.  We've not beaten Luck ever and we've never won a game at Lucas Oil Stadium.  But we're in a situation that no one thought we'd be in after 10 games...vying for a playoff spot.  Trust me....no one in Nashville is getting too ahead of ourselves of our chances.  The Colts have always had our number.  And we still have the Broncos and Chiefs in the schedule.  I think even if we end the season 7-9, most fans around here would consider that a successful year heading into the next year of the draft.

I just think you guys are an average to bad team still. Our teams are on the same level so I wasn't trying to be argumentativeo or anything.

Just two ok teams playing each other.

Agreed, but not as bad as last two years.  We need another couple of draft classes.

Thanks for your hospitality on this board.

  13. Ugh, I was afraid a day like this would happen.

Mariota wasn't really comfortable all day.  Credit the Indy defense who got to him three times today including the fumble at the end of the game.  It's not that he was horrible (the last TD drive of the Titans was good but we were helped by Indy penalties), but it wasn't enough to beat a QB like Luck.

The Titans' O-line didn't really help making Mariota comfortable either and allowing the push in the final drive was awful.

The Titans D-line was stymied by the Colts O-line all day.  I said earlier in this thread that we lose if Luck is only sacked twice or less and that pretty much happened.  Brian Orakpo's name was barely called all day. With Luck upright, he could carve our secondary up and speaking of which...

None of our secondary could defend TY Hilton.  And former Titan Doyle got the best of us too, especially in the last Colts TD drive.

Special teams again killed us (something else i mentioned).  A botched extra point loomed large at game's end.  And Indy's surprise onside kick was muffed by our guys which resulted in three points.  So the tally for points given up by the special teams for the last three weeks: 10, 3 and 4.

Poor execution in all three phases of the game.  Hopefully our fans won't completely give up on the team after getting our hopes up.  We play JAX on Thursday so we can't dwell on the loss.

    See you guys in Indy.

  14. interesting that this thread isn't that optimistic tells everything about the current state of the Colts.  Could the Titans lose this game?  Absolutely.  Get a late game situation where you guys set up a field goal to win is pretty easy money on the bank.  I do think we have a pretty good chance this week.  We're figured out how to score (this was a big problem in the first three weeks).  We're excellent in the red zone.

But we're incapable of blowing teams out...we're not built for that.  It'll be close and that scares everyone around here.  Heck if the Browns don't make a boneheaded decision and go-for-2 when they did, they could have had a much better situation at the end of the last game to force overtime.

We have to get to Luck at least 3 times.  If we do 5 or more, we win.  We also have to limit turnovers.  2 or more, we lose.  If Murray runs for 120+ yards, we win.  60 or less, we lose.

    23-20 Titans.

Fair enough.  I'm glad you joined the forums.  What are your thoughts on Mularkey?  When he was head coach of the Jags, he was pretty awful.  Do you think he and Mariota can be great together?

The jury is still out on Mularkey.  There were a lot of people in Nashville that weren't happy with the decision for keeping him.  His record in JAX really stank.  But he managed to impress two key constituencies:

    His players

    Controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk

So far we're 3-3 in six games.  That's at the high point of expectations around here considering we only won 3 games last year and 5 games in two years.  This is a better team for sure.  I think it's still too early to say that we're a good team.  Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com and a popular Nashville radio talk show co-host said that right now it looks like the Titans will likely beat lousy teams and lose to good teams....in other words, an 8-8 (or something thereabouts) team.  Right now, that looks like the correct analysis.  That would be a victory around here and make Mularkey's coaching seat ice cold for awhile.

As for Mariota, he's doing pretty well considering he's on his third OC.  The big issue with him has been ball control (fumbles) and doing too much by forcing the ball and winding up with an INT.  The last two games he's doing a lot better in that regard (only one turnover), both games ending up in victories.  In Nashville, the mood is that this game is an opportunity to beat an Indy team for the first time in 10 games.  Our team is largely healthy...we may have everyone available this Sunday on game 7 of a 16 game schedule.  The Colts are pretty beat up.  Our offensive line is actually good....really good.  Our young left and right tackles haven't given up a QB sack or hurry ALL YEAR.  Our defensive front line is also pretty good and getting better on the huries and sacks front.  Our problem has been the secondary, which is an opportunity for a great QB like Luck.  I expect that Dick Lebeau will dial up a lot of interesting blitz packages to keep Luck uncomfortable so he can't carve us up down the field.

I like David Cobb coming out of the draft, but he hasn't been able to stick on anywhere in the league.

Those of us in Tennessee had high hopes for David Cobb but he spent most of last season injured.  Then this year we got Murray and Henry which means he was competing for the third running back position and just didn't make this team.  That doesn't mean he's not a good back...just not good enough for a stacked running team.

  17. This one stung, since we should have put you guys away on the 1 yard line.  We only got a field goal and that set the stage for the comeback.

Everybody in Nashville understands that the team that has Andrew Luck can come back at any time, as the 98 yard drive showed.  But we also are pretty confident in our man Mariota for being able to do the same thing.

Enjoy the victory.  See you guys in Indy.

  18. Nobody here in Nashville thinks that we're going to rule the AFC South this year.  It's still way early for our team and rookie QB.  We made last minute changes to the offensive line and we traded Andy Levitre to Atlanta as a part of that move.  The O-line played pretty well, allowing the pocket to collapse for sacks twice. We're still a few defensive pieces away from being solid.  But if Mariota keeps playing like Week 1, that could inspire the defense to play above their ability.

That being said, we're all pretty excited about this guy.  Now he got a chance to go up against a pretty bad team from last year (and the Titans were no great shakes either).  Next week it'll be the Browns in Cleveland featuring Johnny Football so everyone thinks that's a winable game.  After that, we face you guys in Nashville and that will be a real test.  We'll still be the underdog.  But at least the game may be competitive.
