The Jags are not showing anyone they are as good as most folks predicted. The Titans have a questionable QB. The Colts should improved weekly as AR slides more in to the groove and JT performs. The Texans are showing their schemes are working and they have a bunch of talent. To me they will be a real threat in our division.

Tannehill is not really questionable. His front line has always been the problem. Hopefully for us Titans fans that continues to improve.

  2. Hello fellow AFC-South fans.

Here's to another year of hopefully good football. This is a game that could really go either way, but I'm interested in the fact that the Colts are +2.5 home dogs this weekend. So how are the Titans this year?

Well, we're an up and down team. And the biggest problem with the Titans aren't the defense, Tannehill, wide outs, tight ends or the King. The obvious problem is the offensive line. We've had to largely completely rebuild it and its been pretty awful until the most recent game against the Bengals. Run blocking and pass blocking were both equally bad, especially in the Browns game. Now we were facing an elite defense and a defensive coordinator (Jim Schwartz) who is one of the best in the game. Worse, he has a long relationship working for the Titans including the last two years under Mike Vrabel. So he knew every weakness and had the talent to exploit it (and we were just awful). Hopefully we won't be in the same boat too often. But any team that wants to play the Titans needs to review the film on the Browns game.

When we could actually block someone last week, the King returned to form and Tannehill found his targets. So it's pretty simple. If the O-line can execute, it's likely we have a good day. If not, its going to be a very long day. Fortunately we may get back one of two starters this week, but things are still very up in the air.

What are we doing better? Play calling is far better. The Titans are no longer as predictable as we have been in previous seasons. Although I'm still laughing at how teams are still falling for Derrick Henry doing a pass play from the wild cat on the goal line. The play called the "King Cat" has been cash money over and over again. For a running back, Henry's passing stats are 7 of 8 completions and 4 (!!) touchdowns.

Historically, we have a bad habit of making rookie QBs (and some backups) look like they are bound for Canton. Our defensive line is nasty and when they are on, they are hard to stop. Jeffrey Simmons is easily top 2 or 3 in the league for the interior line. So bottling up Richardson's athleticism will be key for us. And last week was easier with a gimpy Joe Burrow. And of course, Denico Autry needs no introduction to your guys and is always motivated to play his former team.

But no doubt Richardson is very talented. How fast he continues to improve is an open question. But I'm sure he's been fun to watch for you guys.

Titans are looking like they’re gonna be the number 1 seed after today too..bad day all around for Colts fans.

Let's not count our chickens here in Nashville just yet. The Titans have a horrible habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory when it comes to playoff seeding. Hell, it happened earlier this season when we were #1 and then lost to.....<checks schedule> Houston!

Depends if the colts put him on IR. Teams don't normally carry two kickers

The Titans are carrying two kickers right now since Ryan Succop hasn't been the same since coming back from IR earlier this season from a knee injury.  When he first came back, he was spraying it all over the yard.  Accuracy is better now but distance is crap, so we brought in a kicker for kickoffs and long distance field goals.  You guys saw him last week but he didn't kick any field goals.

I see Doyle having a good game. Not sure he'll have 100 though.

How do you feel about your DBs?

Cameron Wake went to IR after last game....not good and he's been productive, even at an advanced age for an NFL player.  But the rookie Jeffery Simmons is back there now and he began the season injured still working on his ACL repair from this past January.  He's been pretty productive so far and hasn't faced the Colts yet.  Part of our problem the last time was the inability of getting Brissett on the ground, even when he was in the grasp of someone.  Simmons is a proverbial beast....should be an interesting challenge for both men.

If they put the same person on Hilton they usually do TY could have a big day.  He has done well against the titans secondary. So important to keep Brissett clean so he can get those shots. They also have a guy in the secondary that hates to tackle.

TY Hilton always scares us.  I've yet to see us have a true answer for that guy.  He always plays us well.  But Logan Ryan and Malcolm Butler are very experienced corners with Kevin Byard behind them.  It's probably the best defense we've ever had against that guy.

The Titans' punter isn't just "very good".  I wouldn't have anyone else in the league except for Brett Kern.  He's that good.  Last week's safety was set up because Kern sent a 70 yard bomb straight into the "coffin corner".  And he does this all the time.

My keys for winning this game include...

    1) Having Doyle help chip on the right side helping out Braden Smith against Cameron Wake when he or Harold Landry lines up against him in obvious passing downs. Costanzo and Nelson can lock down the left side.

    2) Stop Derrick Henry in the running game.

    3) Eliminate screen plays.

    4) Establish the run as a threat, so that Brissett doesn't have to completely carry the offense.

    5) Take care of the ball, and make Mariota uncomfortable.

    6) Don't hurt yourself with penalties or giving away points on special teams.

Cameron Wake may be old but he certainly isn't showing it.  He was AFC defensive player of the week with 2.5 sacks (one for a safety) and two tackles for loss.  Last year, Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan, two long time Titans linebackers (now retired) didn't have that many combined all season.  Landry is young and learning.  One of these days he'll have his break-out game.  It'll be important since the last time we faced the Colts, Luck could have had a poker game going in the pocket with the amount of time he got.

You may stop Henry in the first quarter or two,  But the plan is to keep him punishing the line and eventually they just won't want to tackle him anymore.  Nearly all of his good games have played out this way.  Of course this only works if the defense keeps the Colts out of the end zone because if the game gets out of hand, any coordinator is going to get pass happy.

It's funny about screen plays....everyone saw the play to Henry last week 75 yards for a TD via a screen.  But the Titans have historically been a lousy screen team.  Jeff Fisher barely ran them.  Hopefully this is changing.  The Titans ran the exact same play to AJ Brown earlier in the game and he dropped the pass.

Both teams have to keep the run under control.  Not sure "stopping" is entirely an option.

Yes, the playbook is always to make Mariota uncomfortable.  But after four years in the league you'd hope that this is less effective a strategy.

The Cleveland game was a ridiculous amount of penalties....most by a Cleveland team since 1951(!).  That's unlikely to happen again but the Titans were the least penalized team in the league last year.  Don't expect them to be sloppy.

Sunday the titans are honoring Steve McNair and Eddie George. Half the playoff teams from last year lost week one last week. Four division leaders lost week one.

This week is extremely important for the Titans franchise.  Yes, McNair's and George's numbers will be retired at halftime.  I saw George at a non-profit event this week and he's trying to soak in everything since his departure from the club wasn't what anyone would have hoped (shipped off to Dallas for a wasted year).

But its not too much to say how the season will play out depends on this game.  When the Titans were in training camp, everyone circled this game since the Colts kept the Titans out of the playoffs on the last game of last season.  And we expected to go up again Luck, like Don Quiote against a proverbial windmill.  Now Luck is retired and this team has beaten Brissett before.  But then our O-line is shuffled like a shoe in Vegas with Lewan on suspension, Pamphile injured and Dennis Kelly, who normally subs on RT is now having play LT.

If the Titans win, that puts them firmly in command of the division with some winnable games into the interior of the season.  Lose, and its anyone's ball game again.  What fans are worried about is repeat of last year where we beat some teams no one expected on the schedule (Patriots and Eagles) and turned around and inexplicably lost to Buffalo and had that weird season opener at Miami where Mariota and Delanie Walker both went down with serious injuries.

Stopping the run is easier said that done this week.  That being said, both teams have the exact same problem trying to corral elite backs.

Jurrell casey isn't a scheme fit

Derrick Henry is wayyyy too overated( Dude had only a few good games last year)

Taylor lewan we don't need another lineman at the price he would cost

Jeffery Simmons is an off the field concern

Kevin Byard is getting old and we already have players at his position

Dion Lewis isn't that great to begin with

    I would want AJ Brown

As of this writing, Mariota is healthy.  We'll see if he stays that way.

Derrick Henry was overrated until the last 5 games of last year.  The Titans nearly traded him.  As has been widely reported, Titans legend Eddie George gave him a "talking to".  Now the man is...well, The Man.

Taylor Lewan is arguably the best LT playing....too bad you won't see him right now due to him being stupid with supplements.

Jeffrey Simmons had an off-the-field assault early in his college career.  He knows that the organization won't tolerate another one.  But that is a guy to watch out for when he comes off of IR later this year.

Kevin Byard would be coveted by just about every team in this league which is why the Titans locked him up with a long term contract before this season (his third).  He's a ball hawk....do not throw in his direction.  He co-led the league in INTs his rookie year.  He already had the 1st INT of the season last week.

Dion Lewis is small and shifty but not that kind of a talent.

AJ Brown made his debut with a 3 catch/100 yd performance, much of that yardage after the catch.  Watch out for him.

  11. Pamphile is very unlikely for the Titans this Sunday.  That being said, they crushed the Browns without him last week.  Here in Nashville we were very concerned about the makeup of the O-line with Pamphile injured and Taylor Lewan on suspension.  And while everything wasn't completely clean, they did give Mariota enough room to work with, limiting to three sacks but one of those sacks was a "give-up" sack in garbage time to burn the clock.

The Texans have the best QB in the division but the Titans are more desperate. Mariota and Vrabel jobs are on the line this year. I think the Titans win the division this year at 10-6. Texans finish the season 9-7. Jags 6-10 and the Colts 5-11.

Vrabel isn't going anywhere, short of an epic collapse and losing season due to bad coaching, which is unlikely.  As for Mariota, it's a contract year.  Lead the Titans to the playoffs and get through the season with good stats and no significant injuries and he'll likely be back.  Win another playoff game and his future is assured.

  13. I've been reading all of these reactions and yeah, we fans in other cities feel you you guys as a fanbase.  But some of this reaction is way over the top.

The Indianapolis Colts have been in a truly enviable position regarding QBs with both Luck and Manning before him.  You had a "suck for Luck" year between them and then you got Luck.  Most teams would have killed for that kind of talent over than period of time (20 years!).  The only truly unfortunate thing was that it happened during the Tom Brady era, or else you might would have had more than one ring.

Meanwhile in Nashville, we haven't had a sure thing since McNair was traded to the Ravens.  We had a similar situation four years ago with Jake Locker.  After four seasons hobbled by injuries, he said "screw this" and walked away from the game.  Some thought he might come back once he truly healed and for a couple of years teams tried to get him to come back in a #2 role, but no, he said he was done and to stop calling him.

Few of us have played at a high level like this, much less had to play through pain and injuries and spend so much time in rehab (I've had two achilles ruptures that I had to do surgery and rehab).  Most just do it.  But everyone has their limits.  And Luck found his.  And I cannot imagine it was an easy decision.  I'm sure that a few months back he was looking forward to the season playing healthy.  But once injury happened again, he thought long and hard about it.  The team, franchise and the fans vs his well being and his family.  And then there's his legacy.  Luck was well on his way to Canton and leaving early likely ends that quest.

Many of you cannot imagine walking away from the game at all, much less the timing.  The fame, the glory and especially the money.  But he already has a lot of money.  And there were apparently more important things in life than playing football.

  14. Back after Nov 23rd I came back here and said that I hoped that the last game of the season would be for something special.  And now here we are.

The Titans are now guaranteed to have 3 years of consecutive winning seasons, the first since the Oilers became the Titans.  But it's not like any of those years have been the top in the league or even the conference.  We've been up and down due to injuries, poor play against certain opponents, and other X-factors.

Which brings me to our big X-factor in this game, Andrew Luck.  No one is under any illusions about playing Luck, a guy we have never beaten.  This was similar to us playing Peyton Manning back in the day.  And the Nov 23 game was one of the most lopsided losses all season with the possible exception of the Ravens game.

If the Titans are going to win, we have to get to Luck and that didn't happen last game.  No sacks and very few pressures.  Now not having out defensive coordinator to call the game was a big problem there....Vrabel was calling that game himself from the sidelines.  But even then we weren't doing anything to get beyond the offensive line and if that happens again, Luck will pick us apart like the first time.

Then we've had two key injuries on the defensive side.....starting safety Logan Ryan two weeks ago (broken fibula) and Jurell Casey (badly sprained MCL).  Casey's loss is huge...he's arguably our best player on either side of the ball.  He was already selected to the Pro Bowl and his loss is going to be a problem in the quest to get to Luck.  Logan Ryan was a big leader in the secondary and despite having no INTs this year, his presence was felt everywhere and was a key in stopping the run.  Leshawn Sims will replace him and has been playing ok in relief but he's no Logan Ryan.

On the bright side for us, Malcolm Butler has been playing up to his reputation since the Bye week....before that he was getting torched on a regular basis.  Safety Kevin Byard is again leading the team in INTs and is playing at a Pro Bowl level again.  Adoree Jackson is the fastest corner on the team, but his lack of experience has been why TY Hilton torched him all the last game.  How he does in this game will be a big question mark.  He's had a pretty good year up until now but he needs to be able to shutdown the elite WRs in this game.

The offense this year has been a big problem.  We've consistently been at the back at the pack in stats all year against other clubs.  The reason we're 9-6 now is because the defense has been the 2nd best scoring defense in the league so they've kept us in most game (Nov 23 not withstanding).  Some of that has been the receiving core.  Losing TE Delanie Walker at the beginning of the season was a huge blow since he was easily Mariota's favorite target.  And Rishard Matthews quit the team after the first few games, eventually landing at the Jets.  That left 1st round WR pick Corey Davis and a bunch of players unknown outside of Nashville.  The good news is that the entire crew has been getting better as the weeks have gone on but only Corey Davis scares people.

The big news for the Titans offense of late has been the emergence of Derrick Henry.  Now in his 3rd year, most around Nashville was wondering when this guy was going to rise to the Alabama-star, Heisman-winner we knew he was.  And I think he was wondering that too.  He was being played behind former Patriot Dion Lewis (who was running well early on).  But then in one mid-season game, Vrabel actually put in the 3rd string RB (David Fluellen) ahead of Henry in a game.  That guy went down with a non-contact knee injury after a few reps but it shook Henry enough to reach out to Titans legend Eddie George for help.  After that conversation, Henry has been a changed man and has been running with renewed authority.  If he makes 1000 rushing yards this season (now at 966), it'll be largely because of the final four games of the season.  Stop Henry...if you can.

The O-line was better last year...this year has been very up and down.  Spain has not played up to his potential.  Taylor Lewan is playing Pro Bowl level ball but he's been nicked up for most of the season.  And Jack Conklin who went on IR two weeks ago had not been playing well at all which is surprising since that guy was an all-Pro his rookie season.  He went down with an ACL tear at the end of last season and didn't play until the first few games of this season.  He didn't have a training camp and he's never been 100%.  When he tweaked the knee again (not as bad this time), the team decided to IR him and wait till next  season.  In the meantime we've had Dennis Kelly filling in for him and Kelly has been the best steal of a trade we've had in over 10 years.  The backup was an upgrade for the starter this year and he'll be fine at right tackle.

So that brings us to Mariota.  There is an intense debate on gotitans.com about whether Mariota should even be the starting QB this week, whether he can play or not.  Personally I think the commentary is getting a bit ridiculous but it's apparent that Mariota does seem to end up leaving games more often then anyone would like.  Interestingly enough, he's only missed 4 or 5 starts in four seasons but we watched his predecessor Jake Locker miss a lot of games due to injury.  And then there's the ghost of Steve McNair who always seemed to get out of a hospital bed and lead his team to victory every week.  It's an unfair comparison really, but football fandom doesn't have to be logical.

The good news is that he doesn't turn the ball over like he used to (INTs are only 8 this year) but his number of TD passes is 11, which is less than a 3rd of what Luck has this year.  This has been a big problem in Titans scoring this year.  Mariota has had to deal with 3 different offensive systems in four years which doesn't help.  But it doesn't help with the fans with guys like Mahomes slinging it around the yard every game...or of course Luck or Watson in our own division.  But it could be worse...we could have gotten Jameis Winston.

  15. "Well that went poorly!".  -- Mr. Incredible, Incredibles 2

Talk about a day where everything went badly, from the offense reverting to the beginning of the season, no protection of Mariota which led to a re-aggravation of his elbow (hopefully not serious), the defense completely no-showing and not getting to Luck at all (yes they were out there all day but even in the 1st quarter they were bad).  Even the special teams gave up a big play and was a penalty away from a TD.

See you guys at the end of the season, maybe for rights to a wild card.

The more I think about it the more I am worried about this game.  We scored a couple of touchdowns last week that were a result of blown coverages.  I don't think we will see that from the Titans.  I think we have to get the running game to win this one.  A performance like last week won't be enough.  Fairly even teams.  Let's see who has the better coaching staff to get the win.

Well Malcolm Butler has been the king of blown coverages for us.  The Pats game was the first time all season he hadn’t gotten burned for a long TD.  Hopefully he’s figured out what he needs to do but I expect Luck to test him.

Welcome to the Colts forum.  It used to be we would get 3-8 fans from the opposing team every week to post on here and maybe that will start up again now that the Colts are becoming a football team again.

The Pats was a good win for the Titans but against the Chargers Vrabels decision didn't cost the Titans the win, it cost the Titans a tie and a chance for a win.  Big difference.

Anyway the Titans are a good team, and like the Colts, are trending upwards.  The Colts D is not as bad as they have looked the last couple of weeks because they will be getting some bodies back that help the D to click, I think this will be a good game and it very well could be the team that has the ball last will win it.

Thanks for the hospitality.  I joined this board a few years back and usually lurk and occasionally comment before a Colts - Titans game.

The end of the Chargers game was not the coaching decision you’re thinking.  Yes, we could have kicked the PAT and taken our chances in OT, which wasn’t a bad move considering we’d just changed the momentum at the end.  But what I was referring to was that the 2 pt conversion actually had two plays.  The first play was a pass that ended in a pass interference, placing the ball on the 1.  At this point Vrabel dials up another slant pass play.  When you have Dion Lewis, Derrick Henry and Mariota in your backfield and don’t use any of them to get one yard, that’s not a good call.  And neither of the backs were on the field to even keep the defense honest if you really felt the pass was the best move.  This was the conversation in Nashville after the game.

  18. Greetings from Nashville.

First, not one is saying here that the Titans are Super Bowl contenders but they did knock off both Super Bowl teams (Eagles, Pats) this year for whatever that's worth.

The Titans have been a strange team to follow.  It began with Mariota getting injured (again)  Week 1 on his throwing hand which led to a strange game in Week 2 versus the Jags where we won 9-6 where Blaine Gabbert played and we threw every piece of trickery at the Jags to win that one.  When Mariota did come back, his throwing hand wasn't the same and despite him seeming like he was ok in the Eagles victory, the true story was that he was just having trouble holding onto the football which led to problems with the Buffalo game (Loss) and the Ravens debacle (shutout).

Things got better in London for the Chargers game where we were a bad decision by Coach Vrabel kept us from winning that one.  Since then the Titans have apparently found a good groove, beating the Cowboys at Jerry World and stomping on the Pats at home.

During all of this the defense has gone from ok to really good.  They aren't the best in the league (#6 right now) but they are the best scoring defense in the league and the best in the red zone.  And that was with a few key injuries.  This week we should be back to full strength or close to it.  While the offense struggled early on, the defense kept us in every game except the Ravens game and they still only gave up 21 points.

Everyone on the team spent the first half of the season getting used to the new coaching staff and  vice versa.  It looks a lot better now than in the first few weeks with better decision making.  Matt LaFleur looks like he has Mariota figured out and is using him to the best of his abilities meaning to keep him in the pocket and his eyes downfield but a few designed runs in the bag of tricks at the right time.  And Dean Pees' defense isn't really afraid of anyone right now, especially after the dismantling of Brady's offense.

That being said, everyone here is talking about the streak.....Luck is 9-0 against the Titans and Luck looks like he's the Luck of old.  In past years, TY Hilton and a combination of TEs have always downed the Titans chances.  Meanwhile Mariota who has relied on TEs for years, specifically Delanie Walker can't since Walker dislocated his ankle in week 1 and our #1 receiver quit the team.  So for the first time, Mariota's first option is to the remaining wideouts and they have been stepping up in recent weeks, especially first round pick from last year Cory Davis.  If Mariota is dealing successfully to Davis, it'll be a long day for the Colts defense.

  19. A healthy Luck can field a bunch of scrubs and make them contenders.  But not only is his health in question, but keeping him healthy with that O-line is a big problem for you guys.

  20. We had no business winning that game with three T/Os.  But the defense stepped up and stopped two redzone drives, one on the goal line, the other an INT in the end zone.  Mariota didn't have a stellar game but got us into field goal range on the final drive with no time outs.  And Succop had the kick of his life in a place he knew very well having been the old KC place kicker years ago.

Everything is pointing to the final game against Houston on Jan 1st for all the marbles.  Houston is trying to make a go of it with a backup QB who had success today.  But he'll be playing in Nashville.  The big problem is next week against JAX which is looking like the classic trap game with a fired head coach and OC.  Will the Jaguars fold or will they play to make a statement?
