  1. Not every team proves to be the best situation for every player. Who knows he could come to Indy and end up being a Monster impact player. There are ample players who have moved on to other teams and revitalized their careers.

A team is paying him 2 MILLION dollars to NOT be on their team.  If that isn't a statement, I don't know what is.  Monster impact player is not something he will be.

  2. Why not Bring Dockett in for a tryout. i think he still has something in the tank and could be a bright spot on the defensive line with rotation.

Another team thought that, gave him a fair amount of money, and then released him and decided it was better to pay 2 million not to have him on their roster.  That to me suggests that what he had is gone.  I'd honestly prefer they move forward with each of the guys they have, and perhaps bring in a 20-27 year old guy if he fits that could potentially carve a spot on this team for the next 3-5 years.  Dockett at best would be a 1 to 2 year solution.  And I honestly think that is what they are trying to do potentially with Still and some of these other guys.

  3. No problem.  Everyone has an opinion.  My real point is we replace Hughes and Chapman with McGill a UFA and Still....not even as average as Chapman was...JMO.

Very true, there is always the possibility that they will be worse.  But I just figure each of those guys had plenty of time to make their value known.  They just never did.  Could be a coaching problem, or just a lack of ability.  I think we wanted Hughes to be lesser Ngata more or less, but it never happened.  Chapman was supposed to be our Wilfork, but that didn't happen either.  I can't fault the management for trying them as each had traits that were similar to those two comparisons, and I won't fault them for moving on and trying someone else.  I just figure if we have to adjust our scheme and get guys with better motors or whatever the case is, do it.  We can't hang on hoping that the 3rd/4th year is the time it finally clicks for guys who should have solidified starting spots by now.

  4. at least you had a 'known.'

I have a problem with this concept.  A known below average contributor we should have kept over someone who potentially could be average or above average?  I really wanted Chapman to come around, but it seems it never happened.  If we constantly hang onto knowns, we'll never move on and get guys who are better.  Chapman had a LONG time to come around.  He didn't.  It was time to move on.

I kinda wish they had known where Chapman was at and as a result made a legitimate play for Wilfork.  We really need to have that kind of a talent in the middle.  Wilfork, though old, still seems to be better than the majority.

  5. Yeah it dl that needs all while Brandon spikes and Jake long still on free agancy

Yeah... why are we not jumping all over Spikes...

On May 18, 2015, Spikes agreed to a one-year contract to return to the Patriots. On June 8, 2015, Spikes was released due to a police investigation dealing with an abandoned car belonging to Spikes, which was possibly involved in a hit-and-run.[19] Massachusetts State Police cited Brandon Spikes on June 12, 2015 for leaving a scene of an accident with injury, driving negligently and failing to stay within marked lanes.[20]

    SMH.

  6. After re-watching the game, had they not started on the 7 yard line every drive, and had they not incurred 115 yards in penalties, what Luck and Pep were doing probably would have worked. It was pretty much our normal offense, what had worked for us last year. Not much of anything was going to work at 2nd and 20 inside the 10.

There is a lot of truth to this.  Our field position was seldom good.

I do agree that we should stick to the run more.  This team appeared to have Hilton taken out of the deep game.  But I do fail to see why we didn't hit them with Moncrief and Dorsett deep at least once or twice.  If they take away Hilton deep, we still have two guys with very good wheels.

All in all, I don't see all the reason for the hate towards Pep.  The players simply didn't execute.  Guess that makes it his fault.  Meh.

  7. Opening game jitters? then they should not be playing at all. This is not pee wee football. Maybe jitters for the coaching staff not being prepared. Preseason is time to work out things out to be prepared as Pro Players.

I don't really care what you want to call it.  It happened to a NUMBER of teams.  Bonehead plays.  Players not completely sure of what their teammates are going to do.

The preseason is essentially garbage time to play reserves.  There is a reason they are looking at shortening the preseason.  The first game of the season is generally where teams have their 1s on the field for as much of the complete game as possible.  Prior to that, each has only played a few quarters together.

All I can say is, I watched countless games where announcers referred to a team just not jelling week 1.  It happens.  We should be better at it, but we're not.  We have new faces, and some return faces moving into bigger roles (Moncrief).  I have no doubt next week's game is better.  We all wish this game was, but the idea of throwing in the towel after a week one loss is beyond stupid.  And the sad thing is, this thread is suggesting that the one strength of our game on Sunday was what caused it.  I didn't see it that way at all.

  8. offense got us into every hole

I would agree with this and the last comment about their punting.

We made TERRIBLE plays on special teams, fumbling the ball, taking it out and getting stopped short of the 5, and just plain bad field position.  Buffalo killed us there.

Our offense sputtered mostly.  Johnson didn't seem to be a factor.  Hilton was involved often, but was injured and out late in the game.  Moncrief missed several plays.  Dorsett wasn't a factor.  Fleener was not involved.  Allen did alright.

Long story short, this particular thread is a joke.  Our defense kept LESEAN MCCOY under 4 yards per carry.  The worst (IMO) that we did there was completely lose McCoy on those dump off passes.  Beyond that, our defense would have been adequate if we had maintained better field position.

I dunno, I get the idea of getting a spark from Dorsett on the return game, but we'd have been better with Whalen there (hind sight is 20/20 I know).  Dorsett should have been favored over Moncrief after Moncrief's 2nd/3rd mistake.

All in all, I just see it as opening game jitters.  I don't think it continues.  And when the offense figures it out, we ought to do exactly what teams thought we should on offense.  And the defense I think can surprise people once the offense puts it all together.

  9. I am not saying I wouldn't be a ticked off if I was Kam, but he knows most players are going to look at it as a business decision and get the most they can; and that salaries would go up ... He should have gambled on himself and played out his contract if he wanted a big payday ... instead he chose the safer route and let the team absorb some of the risk and his contract reflects that.

That's just it though, if he was looking at their team as though it could be a dynasty that could be retained for years to come, a smaller deal can make sense.  But all that goes out the window the moment they throw everything and the kitchen sink at a QB who not everyone agrees is the biggest piece to that puzzle.  Don't get me wrong, RW is extremely important to that team.  But the defense and the ground game carry a major part of that team.

All that said, he did sign the deal.  But I do feel that at least some part of this ties to the deal handed to RW.  He's getting a 1/4 of what Wilson got.  If that was me, I'd be pretty miffed too.  However, QBs are constantly getting paid in today's NFL.  Seems the only difference is guaranteed money.

  10. I hate when players try to hold out on a brand new contract they just signed.  Although I am perfectly happy for him to sit out the season if it hurts the Seattle.

I could be wrong, but really feel like this hold out stems directly from the amount paid to Russell Wilson.  Kam likely sees it as he took one for the team to allow them to retain more of their guys.  Then, the team goes on to send a major chunk towards their QB whom many see as a guy that simply has to make the plays required to not turn the ball over and occasionally take some chances to give his team a chance to win.  So, 5-6 years and a 100+ million vs his 4 years and 28 million, when many are suggesting that he was a major leader and contributor on that defense.

I normally won't side with a player 1 year into a brand new deal, but if he did happen to 'take one for the team' so they could retain more players, and they turned around and used that money on 1 guy... I'd have a really hard time with it.  It's not much different than Anquan Boldin taking a very team friendly deal, and having the team turn around and throwing 10-15 million a year at Fitzgerald, while Boldin was getting 5-7.

Granted, there are surely differences.  But Boldin at that time was providing roughly 80-90% of the production Fitz was, but he was getting 50% of the pay.

All in all, if they shelled out less for Wilson and perhaps retained other players, I doubt his contract is problem.  But instead, he probably feels backhanded by Wilson's deal.  (I am just speculating of course, but it makes the most sense to me given how far he is taking this hold out.)

  11. With Herron and Ballard injured, I would be on speed dial with Fred Jackson's agent.

    — Tom James (@TribStarTJames)

    September 4, 2015

With Herron and Ballard injured, I would be on speed dial with Fred Jackson's agent.

I'd be willing to be those injuries are just precautionary, at least on Boom.  I'd suspect Vick's best chance is to get IR designated to return, but I question if they want to use that there.  He needs time away from the game to get tip top.

We still have Tipton and Varga, so pannicking and signing a 34 year old backup seems foolish to me.  Granted, it could be a good year for us and a dependable backup may be beneficial, but then that would signal the end for a guy like Varga, who does seems to be one heck of a tough runner.  He'd be a good guy to hang onto I would think.

  12. I can't see facebook or twitter at work.  Is the tone that he WANTS to play earlier?

If the first DR said he could play, why is he seeing another one?

This was the full text in the post:

Source: ‪#‎Colts‬ DT Art Jones is now seeking the opinion of another foot & ankle specialist--namely Dr. Robert Anderson. It's expected Dr. Anderson will review & discuss Jones' scans today. Jones already visited a foot and ankle specialist "referred by the Colts previously. That doctor said he felt (Jones) does not have to go on injured reserve and (Jones) can play in the 2015 season," the source said. I'm told Jones is seeking more specifics and a confirmation to his previous evaluation.

Sounds like an extended outage, but not more than 17 weeks.

  13. "Parry competing for a starting spot" could be nothing more than coach-speak.  Just like at the stat of halftime in the game vs. the Bears...a reporter stopped Pagano to ask him a few questions, one of which was asking him how Parry played.  Pagano said "I thought he played well".  If I thought Pagano actually believed that then I'd join the "Fire Pagano" brigade.

Parry has made a couple of plays, I'll give you that, but it's not been by doing the job he's supposed to be doing.  The NT in this defense needs to be able to take on blockers, preferably 2 of them, to keep the LBs clean.  Chapman does that.  Parry did not.  The only times I saw Parry coming close to "making a play" was when he split defenders, not by taking on blockers and pushing them around.  Parry got pushed around against the Bears FAR more than Chapman did.

Now if the Colts are going to run more 1-gap than 2, then right now Parry would be the better option over Chapman.  I'd still put Kerr in over both though. As an internal pass rusher, Parry would be better than Chapman...but against the run, Chapman is currently far superior to Parry imo.

Bottom line...I don't believe for a second that, RIGHT NOW, Parry is legitimately competing for a starting spot.

I dunno that I'll ever get this logic.  Yes, by definition a NT in a 3-4 is typically supposed to clog up the middle and take up two blockers.  However, if he instead penetrates and makes a play on his own... he's not doing his job?

Sorry, but lets say a guy like Parry consistently splits two linemen and eventually they're forced to keep him from doing that, he's then occupied two blockers.  I can't say that I'd find it 'ideal' that he simply always occupies two blockers by brute force.  If it happens to be due to penetration instead of just force, he's still getting into the backfield and disrupting a play, or forcing a line to adjust.

Best I can remember (it's been a while), at one point Dallas had a fairly successful 3-4 defense with a pretty small NT (6-4 sub 300lbs).  The Ravens also had guys much closer to 300lbs, while having Ngata at the DE position.

All I can say is, if the brute force approach doesn't work with the guy we have (Chapman), it may be worthwhile to try a different approach.  Pigeon holing a NT as a guy who simply takes on two blockers?  If he can instead make plays on his own, why not let him?  It's better than having him occupy two blockers and the RB simply working against teh next hole in the defense.

And I am not speaking to Parry specifically, I am simply saying in general that the concept of a NT being the guy who clogs it all up and the only way to do that being brute force seems like a narrow minded approach.  We could very well perform better as a unit if the NT penetrated forcing the linemen up front to adjust over the course of the game.

  14. Of course he did...but he didn't get ridiculously overpaid..in fact I believe most are considering that it was a rather team-friendly deal.  Luck is going to get paid A LOT...whether it's this year or next year.  he will get the largest contract in the history of the NFL up to that point.  That's just going to happen.

Pretty much this.  I'd think if Luck/his agent aren't pushing, let it pass.  Regardless of when it goes through, the deal will be MASSIVE.  By all accounts he is the next major QB ala Manning/Brady/Rodgers, and he is pretty close to that already.  I suppose if he wins MVP and the SB, it could go a bit higher or simply be more of a unquestionable thing by him/his agent.  But we're likely not going to save much by waiting.

  15. Watch the press conference with Pagano and Grigson after they drafted Dorsett. You can tell Pagano wasn't as excited about the pick as Grigson. And think about it. Not only is Pagano a defensive minded coach, he's also a DB guru.

You're sitting there in the low 20s and Landon Collins is there. He's the top safety, and Pagano coached guys like Ed Reed and Bernard Pollard, who were both physical safeties. I think if it was his call he would have taken Collins. Don't get me wrong, I like the selection of Dorsett and I'm sure Chuck did too in a sense. And Geathers had just as high of a ceiling, but I'm looking at it from Chuck's view. He might have also liked to get Malcolm Brown as well, but given his DB roots, he probably would've been jumping for joy for Collins. Watch the pressed conference and pay attention to Pagano's tone and expression and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I'm just referring to the video immediately following the pick.  He sure seemed happy to me, so I didn't figure he was bent out of shape about it.  He may have different body language in the press conference, but who knows what that is related to.  Certainly could have been the pick, could've been a different discussion.  Who knows.

As for Chuck being a DB guy, meh.  Talent can come in ANY round.  Maybe he wanted Collins, but who knows.  For me, Collins seems too much like a run stuffer and less of a pass defender.  That, to me, doesn't seem like his type of guy.  Reed is a good example of a great ball guy.  Pollard not so much.  And Pollard was more of a freeby given that he got cut elsewhere for simply being a run defender (if I recall correctly).

  16. Only thing I can see tension over is the Dorsett pick. 2 defensive guys on the board in Brown & Collins but we go offense. Maybe the defensive minded Pagano wanted defense, Irsay & Grigson wanted offense.

Other than that, I really don't see how there'd be tension. I think Grigson has made the right moves to give Chuck the defense he wanted and Pep the offense he needed (yes, needed not wanted)

Honestly, sitting back and looking at the draft after complete, I really have to believe that they were planning on getting the NT, DE, and SS that they did get, and where they got them.

So they are setting up their board, and they have each of those guys in mind in the middle rounds.  So come the 1st pick, and a freakish athlete with what they feel are legitimate ball skills falls into their lap... yeah, I have no problems with that pick, and I doubt either of them do or did.

Heck, the terrible Rams were in the top 10 and drafted a Hilton clone in Tavon Austin who thus far has yet to work out.  Most drafts, teams tend to let smaller players fall and take the guys who are prototypical for their positions.  And we used a very late pick in round 1 to nab yet another one, and one who appears to be a potential difference maker.

The video I remember watching during the draft had a bunch of high fives, including Pagano and Grigson.  So when I look at it, I don't think Dorsett being an item of tension.  And when I look at how we failed to move the ball against the Pats because they had a safety over the top on Hilton pretty much every play, you can see exactly where that selection came from.

As for the article... meh.  The deal will get done or it won't.  I like Pagano, and doubt we'll do much better.  But at the same time, Dungy was given a long time.  We did get that SB, but part of me wonders if we had a coach like Pagano with the scheme we have now, if we could have done a bit more on defense during the Manning years and had 1 or 2 more SB wins.  As it was, we only had a few run stuffers on the Dungy D's, and the Polian era would seldom make a few modest DT signings like Grigson has (Redding/Jones/Langford/etc).  And that is not to say that Grigson's guys are great (Redding was), but they certainly were a bit better than we typically had during the Dungy/Polian era.

  17. I have to say, after readying an article this morning, I am finally impressed by Manziel.  Seems like that stint in rehab made something click.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/21/manziel-tiptoes-around-questions-about-starting/

I do think that the article headline is a bit cheesy, because, in my opinion, Manziel answered EVERY question with the type of response you expect to hear from a QB like Rodgers/Brady/Manning/Luck or whomever should they happen to be sitting behind a vet.  Take note RG3, this is what an unproven QB with potential is supposed to act like.  If Manziel can learn, there ought to be hope for RG3...

“I am just happy to be out there and getting a lot of reps,” Manziel said in comments distributed by the team. “That was a good two quarters off football that I got tonight that I am getting a lot better from. I am going to go back and look at the tape and learn from it. The more reps that I am getting, the better for me right now. Would I like to be in there with the ones? Sure, but that is not my call. If that decision does come, I will be ready to hop in there, but for now, I am making the most of the opportunities I am getting.”

  18. Okay, mid to late rounder. He's entirely unproven, played poorly in the preseason game, and is a 24 year old rookie. Everything in his history suggests he'll be less than dependable over the long term, and even if he has a great season or two, it probably won't be prolonged. I'm not writing him off, I just think that's the probability (and every rule has an exception). He's low risk, high reward, for us, at a position where we have depth and options (Whalen, Brown, Bray, all worthy of a 53 man spot based on camp reports). If I could flip that into a conditional pick -- he plays more than 500 snaps and we get Carolina's 5th, he plays more than 700 snaps and we get their 4th -- I'd definitely do it.

I'm pulling for Carter, and not at all eager to push him out the door. Just saying I think I'd take the return in a trade, given the circumstances.

This would be my vote as well. Moncrief is a kid with his head on straight, and we have him for the next three seasons.  He's shown game breaking potential.

Carter sounds to be a good prospect as well, but I'd much prefer a crew of Moncrief, Hilton, and Dorsett over the next 3 years.  Granted, I would think the value on Moncrief has to be super high, meaning we get more in compensation than the third we used to draft him.  Carter would likely bring far less value as he was picked up from Canada, and by most accounts may not have his head on 100% (granted, I think the major knock on him was related to class and such, and not being a bad guy off the field, but nonetheless).

All in all, I see Moncrief as a better fit with us due to his speed.  Carter seems to be a similar prospect to Benjamin. Could be just what they need, and absolutely what Carter needs to show his value in the NFL.  A starting spot with a legit QB throwing him the ball... kinda makes me wonder why he didn't sign with Carolina when he came to the NFL.

  19. I don't see it. Wayne is still a free agent for a reason. I don't think he can contribute nearly as much as what they would want for someone replacing Benjamin's snaps.

Likely the biggest reason Wayne is still a FA is due to age and money.  He probably doesn't want to make peanuts, and most teams want someone with at least some chance to develop as a long term figure on their roster.  A one year stop gap is something only a few teams would look into, and the Panthers could be one as they just lost a big cog in their offense.  That is not to say that Wayne would give them what they would gave gotten from Benjamin, but simply that they'd have a better threat in slot or other position to let the next man up have more open looks.

Granted, unless I am a real contender, I don't think an old receiver is worth a look because he is most certainly done after this season. So all you get is a guy as a one year rental.  I could see Denver or NE taking a look, but if I am Carolina, I want someone that could potentially be on the roster next year, and the year after that.

  20. With Cam's accuracy, the Panthers need another big body with a huge catch radius.  Wayne doesn't fit that at this point in his career.

I think this is over-exaggerating a problem that seldom exists.  Sure,he may make more errant throws than Rodgers, but I don't think Cam got where he is by make completely off the wall terrible throws.

Honestly, they simply need more options.  Losing Benjamin has to hurt, and it is not likely they'll find the perfect successor.  I doubt Wayne will be interested as the Panthers aren't exactly contenders at this point.  If I am the Panthers, I use this as an opportunity to find another young guy to work in and hopefully have a dynamic tandem when Benjamin returns next year.  It sounds as if Funchness is the next man up, but likely a fraction of Benjamin.

I don't see the Panthers having to go after a guy with a 'huge' catch radius.  They simply need someone who can get open and make a few plays.  That could be Wayne, or someone completely different.

  21. You are not serious with your post? There are 31 teams that will not win the SB this year. Most of these are perennial cellar dwellers. Are you telling me that they have drafted well, evaluated their players well and made good decisions? Plezzzz! So you make a bad decision or two, maybe three and draft some bums (as happens all the time) you just stick with them for the duration of their contract to save face and not admit that you made a mistake? Wow, that is some way of doing things.... but apparently happens all the time?. Tell that one to the Browns!

You can think what you want but open your eyes at this .... from Sunday's game .... Tipton 38 Snaps, Robinson 27 Snaps, Toure 12 Snaps and Varga 4 Snaps. That is exactly how things have gone since day one of camp. Obviously nothing has changed. Is this because Charlie and Pep are so good at evaluating talent that they don't even have to put them on the field, game or practice? Just look at history .... ha.ha ha! What kind of positional competition is this? If you tell me that Tipton played better than Varga and Toure despite having 10x as many reps and playing with the 1's, then I guess I am completely blind. With Toure I am not exactly sure what Pep and Charlies problem is but with Varga it can only be one thing and that is his skin color as that kid can flat out play and has all the physical tools to do it. Is this the way to build the best team .... you tell me. Hate to say it but Karma is a *!

OHHHH, I SEE... that WHITE ON WHITE RACISM.  I forgot all about that.  (I haven't gotten to see much of Varga, so I totally did not realize that he was white)

We have a number of UDFA that are white or black.  Whalen is a good example.  He has been signed, released, re-signed, etc. etc. etc.  He had a history with Luck of course, but nonetheless he is a white WR, or should I say, a white skill position player.

As to snap quantity, Tipton was a carry over from last year.  A guy that did a few things against opposing teams bests.  He's not a world beater, but neither is Varga.  And he is more a known quantity than Varga.

All I can say is, getting your panties in a bunch about ANY UDFA is a waste of emotion.  Few and far between are the UDFA that make a 53 man roster.  Teams typically sign 10-15 UDFA college players, and most keep 1 or 2 tops.

And as far as keeping a player for the duration of a contract, no that does not always happen.  Landry, Cherilus are just two examples of players that were cut prior to the end of their deals.  Guys that Grigson brought in and paid big money to.  They're certainly willing to admit their mistakes. But in terms of rookies... draft selections past the 1st round all have 4 year deals with VERY modest salaries.

We had a blowhard on here years ago who swore up and down that Mike Hart was going to be the best back the NFL had seen based on high school and college game tape.  Fact is, Mike Hart is now out of the league.  He was impressive for what he was and where we got him, but he simply didn't stand the test of time.  He had limited reps and was injured.

All I can say is, late round and UDFA players are ALL long shots.  Don't get your hopes up that Varga is going to dominate.  He could make the roster, but at best he'll be a number 4.  And just for perspective, there are 32 teams that passed on him at least 7 times each.  There's a reason he was a UDFA and will be a long shot to make the roster.  If he makes the team, GREAT.  If he doesn't, well I don't think he is a better prospect than Robinson.  Ballard at one time looked to be a REALLY solid back.  If he can rehab from his injuries, he certainly could return.  Varga is a COMPLETE unknown in the NFL.  Giving him 10 or 40 reps in the preseason won't change how much people know about him.

  22. Its not that he cant, He could Im sure. The thing is that's not whats asked of our Backs to keep them fresh. I don't think that will even be asked of Gore

I'll say he could be every down.  However, one major difference between Robinson and MJD is speed.  MJD had oodles of it, Robinson on paper is slow.  He may very well be a great back despite that, but he is simply does not have gamebreaking speed that MJD did.
