  1. What did they do in the 1st half that led you to believe they didnt have their typical slow start?

    1. zero yards and a pick

    2  5 plays 10 yds and a fumble

    3. 8 plays 20 yds punt

    4  5 plays 7 yds and punt

    5  14 plays 80 yds TD*****

6  1 play end of half

    7  3 plays and a punt 9 yds

8  12 plays 90 yds TD roughing the passer, D holding and PI penalties called to keep drive alive   *****

    9  3 plays 6 yds interception

    10  5 plays 17 yds and a punt

    11  4 plays 9 yds and a punt

    12  9 plays 55 yds and a FG***

as a matter of fact     Defend how this offense looked like it ever came out of a slump until the last drive to set up AV???

Hmmmm... Falcons are a top 10 defense in terms of yardage.  We had no run game.  The Falcons are the top run defending team right now.

It's tough to beat a good defensive team.  We did.  I doubt we win that game with Pep.  He telegraphed far too much.  Had it not been for some offensive mistakes (backup QB and all), we likely would have had a much better point differential.

  2. The first pick wasn't Matt's fault. Somebody ran an incorrect route.

How can you be certain that Hasselbeck didn't expect him to run a different route than he was supposed to run?  I'm not saying one is wrong or the other, but I find it hard to believe you would know this unless it was said post game.

  3. Yeah, that and he was not "abused in coverage" either. He wasn't great, but he certainly wasn't abused.

This.  The one guy that got open on him was Julio... yeah, terrible.  Beat by likely the best receiver in the league... he sucks... Geez.

Definitely impressed by Geathers first full game as a starter.

  4. He has dreadful footwork and is often off balance.

Eh, you're probably right.  I just know that most of the time when he gets beat, it's usually a mistep (IE - sloppy footwork) that gives the receiver a head start, but he can't recover once he has been beat (lack of speed).

To me, we let Jeraud Powers go for Toler.  Both were injury prone, but I would probably give the nod to Powers in skills.  He just didn't have the size.  At this point, I would REALLY like to see this team draft one corner early in the draft, and another one later in the draft.  Most of the corners we have are marginal/decent, but nothing we can truly build around.  Hopefully Smith is a good one.  But we still should replace Toler and bring in another youngster so when the injury bug strikes we have more in the cupboard so to speak.

  5. He's much slower than anyone he goes against as well. That's why he is always beat deep and get PI's to prefer TD's.

I would agree with this.  To me, Toler's technique doesn't seem to be THAT bad.  But he lacks recovery speed.  When he gets beat, it's over.  Some corners can run after they get beat and still make a play.  Toler will rely far more often on a poorly thrown deep ball to either slow the receiver down a step or simply an over throw.  But if the QB puts the ball in stride, good night.

Toler could potentially play well for us at the safety position in center field.  But his days as a man to man corner appear to be behind him.  Trouble is, Smith has been injured and I suppose Grigson has enough invested in Toler that he probably gets the start to justify the expense.

  6. Not going to derail the thread but all the stupid crap going on right now. The kid who's crying about white privelage while his dad just made 8.4 million dollars last year. Or now holding a unity meeting but no whites aloud.

You do realize that having a father who makes millions per year doesn't equate to equality.  I am quite sure that what that individual was referring to had less to do with money and more to do with treatment.  It's cute how people think that just because someone comes from wealth they're not dealing with some form of mistreatment.

  7. To me, our opponents do not seem anywhere near as good as what we've faced already.  Falcons and Steelers are likely the best of what we have left, and the Steelers are without Bell and potentially Big Ben.

Add to that the fact that we've since added Bradshaw to compliment Gore, and I think we're in a good place.  Granted, it sucks losing Luck for any period of time, but I have little doubt about Matt being effective.

  8. I almost used that exact phrase.  Yes, Pep needed to go.  I like Chud, he's a great person and it seems like he's a well liked coach.  I just don't know enough about his offensive philosophy yet.

As far as your last sentence, I'm not sure any 'lesser' teams beat us handily during Pep's time.  I agree that he didn't always put us in the best position to win.  I don't think any of us know if that's because of the personnel he's given to work with or because Luck was so out of sorts.

I do know that if the team plays like it did in the last 5+ quarters, we can beat anyone in the league.

There were a few games where we were down by more than a couple of scores.  The Jets and Bills.  Granted, both of those teams have solid defenses, but each of them we should have been in the game through all 4 quarters, and we only wake up in the 4th.  Some of that was Luck.  Most of that was Pep, IMO.  My reasoning to suggest it is mostly Pep is simply that we were far too often putting our offense in predictable situations with bad play calling, and yet we still remain predictable.  At some point, Luck is going to try to force things to his playmakers to get something to happen.  He doesn't do that (as often) when we're not in predictable situations.

And one of the biggest things to me this season for the first 6-7 games was the use of TEs.  We simply didn't.  Well, we have Gore/Johnson/Hilton/Dorsett/Moncrief/etc... why use TEs?  Well, as we saw yesterday, the TEs can take us from predictable third and longs to less predictable third and shorts where we can then use either the run or (play-action) pass to gain 2-3 yards for a first.

The other thing I noticed in Chud was the use of Whalen.  I know many don't think much of him, but he is easily one of our most reliable catchers of the ball.  It's not often that the ball goes his way that it drops to the ground on what most would see as an easy catch.  Whalen was in frequently on third and long and frequently targeted.  I don't care what anyone says to the contrary, Whalen can play.  He's not the fastest, biggest, most dominant player ever.  But the dude can find the soft spot in the zone, or beat his man on a crisp route and make a catch in traffic.  I have seen a few drops from Hilton, some from Moncrief in traffic, a fair amount for Johnson.  But Whalen, from what I have seen, more often than not catches the ball.  He needs to be in on third downs, and he was.  And Luck was extremely comfortable throwing him the ball.

  9. Agree.  We also know that Pep could call a nice conservative game, as he did when MH was starting.

Luck dug us in a lot of holes by himself, which forced more risky play calling.  He was obviously hurting.  A healthy Andrew helps make any OC look good.

To be clear though, I really like Chud.  Time will tell if it was the right move.

The only thing I'll disagree with you on is that time will tell if this was the right move.  To me, Pep needed to go.  Period.  He constantly would telegraph formations.  We line up heavy on 3rd and 1... we're running, and likely getting dominated.  With Chud, it was a pretty good mix.  Some flips to Whalen.  Some runs, etc.

Is it going to be good long term?  That remains to be seen.  But for me, our offense was efficient and effective against one of the league's best defenses.  Before we were getting beat, and in some cases handily, by lesser teams.

  10. Actually Arians did that.

Complete and utter nonsense.  He played a part in season one without a doubt, but to suggest that he had more of a part than Pagano is ignorant.  Arians was not with the team in year 2 or 3, so were we just riding on the wings of what he set us up for?

  11. Crowning Arians is premature.  Heck, Pagano turned this program around from a 2-14 team to an 11-5 team in three straight seasons.  No one should get hailed as a top 5 HC without a SB to his name, IMO.

Belicheck is the only obvious answer here.  Coughlin had some very good years for the NYG.  Carroll hit back to back SB, winning one.  McCarthy is another good one with a very consistent program.  Tomlin went twice, winning one I believe.

  12. He has done a terrible job with the offensive line and its been 4 years and not getting better

Terrible is a stretch.  They're definitely not world beaters, but when you have an OC that prefers to run plays with 7 step drops...

Looking at the line right now, they could be better, but they're not THAT bad.  On most of Luck's INTs, he was at ease in the pocket for a good 4-5 seconds without pressure.  It is simply a matter of no one getting open.

I am not going to say that Grigson did well on the offensive line.  His selection of Dorsett is widely viewed as one that should have been an offensive lineman.  I don't recall if there were any standout prospects available at our spot, but suffice it to say, we'll have no idea how good that pick is until years 2 or 3.  Thus far, he's been underwhelming, but he hasn't had enough time to really be evaluated.  From what I have seen, Mewhort has been a solid pickup and Thornton seems to be coming along.  Reitz is decent, but not a long term solution.  Holmes has been injured far too much.

Terrible?  No.  Below average?  Pretty much.

  13. When the zoomed in you could clearly see his hand at the tip/crown of the ball and the ball touching the ground when the defender tackled him, Even the commentators saw it and mentioned it as well. Am i upset that they didn't make the right call? Absolutely not because they gave the Panthers plenty of breaks. He caught a break.

The commentators can be wrong plenty of times.  Heck, there's times where there is a blatant fall that they totally gloss over.

The only thing that matters is if he has control of the ball when the ball touches the ground.  He did.  It wasn't rolling about freely.  There was not enough visual evidence to overturn the call as called.  Had they called it the other way on the field, they probably couldn't have overturned it that way either.

  14. Greg Doyel gets it right on Grigson in the Indy Star only wish Irsay would get rid of Grigson. This guy is ruining this franchise I don't understand what Irsay see;s in him its so obvious he has no clue

This, to me, is only true if Grigson was dictating coaching staff and personnel to Pagano.

At this point, if any of that was true, it could seem like Irsay is, in a sense, giving Pagano the keys on the coaching side and stripping them from Grigson.  If it plays out, we could retain both through additional seasons.  If not, it would seem a front office refresh is in store.

When I look at what Grigson has done, you have to give him credit for his personnel:

    1. Luck was of course a gimme, though the talking heads were clamoring for RG-ME and he stuck with Luck
    2. Vontae Davis
    3. TY Hilton
    4. Donte Moncrief
    5. Fleener
    6. Allen
    7. Mewhort
    8. D Jackson
    9. Freeman
    10. Langford
    11. Parry
    12. Anderson
    13. Mathis (he could have let him walk... he didn't)
    14. Wayne (he brought him back, possibly at Pagano's insistence)
    15. Gore

Sure, he has had some misses, but he is a guy throwing darts at the board with guys that have solid talent levels.  Some don't pan out for the long haul (Cherilus/Landry).  Some are not as good as we would like (Toler).  But by and large he has brought in talent and not really cap struck this team to the point we can't try new talent.

If you take away any influence he has on the coaching and starters and such (if any of that is true), and leave that aspect to the coaches, he could be a good asset for years to come.  But if he is truly trying to retain power of all aspects, and continues to try to dictate that in the future, he needs to go.  The only time a GM should have full control over the coaching aspects is when he is the head coach himself, ala Bill Bellicheck.  Right now, noone we have is in that caliber, so Pagano's job should be reasonably safe if any of that was true.  Our offense is a shell of what it used to be, but our defense, which is Pagano's background, is middle tier if it wasn't for all those turnovers, and we'd be in good shape to be above middle tier if our offense was worth speaking of.

  15. After watching it in slow motion replay it wasnt a catch his hand slipped and the ball def touched the ground. it was a gift. They needed to make up for that damn no call on the Pass interference on Dwayne Allen which stopped a sure TD.

One hand slipped?  The ball didn't move.  He had two hands on the ball and while the ball did touch the ground it did not move.  There was not enough evidence (IMO) to overturn the call on the field.

  16. He's not bad, but he's no elite WR either. Let's reign in the expectations for him.

We've gone some years without an Aaron Moorehead/Roy Hall/Mike Hart. (Stanley Jean-Baptiese and Tim Fugger tried real hard, but never made that fever pitch so they only get an honorable mention.)

We should strive to keep it that way.

Moorehead - Decent football talent, little in terms of athleticism, good height.

Hall - Good physical talent, little football talent, poor durability

Hart - Good football talent, light in terms of athleticism, poor size characteristics

Baptiste and Fugger don't really fit this conversation, IMO.

For me, Whalen is a fairly good athlete.  I think people see him as undrafted and assume otherwise.  He's a 4.5 guy which is exactly what Wayne was (both recorded times as low as 4.45).  Not much else can be found on Wayne, but Whalen's 3 cone was 6.89, which is respectable (better than Sammie Watkins and Jordan Mathews).

Whalen has a good amount of football skill and as mentioned above, his physical traits are solid.  Thus far he has been durable.  The problem for me is that we're loaded at the top with receivers, and we continued to stack the deck, not leaving any room for him.  Personally, I feel that he should be more consistently placed in the slot role to give Luck that safety valve.  I'd simply like to see them rotate other WR positions to keep those guys fresh (Johnson/Moncrief/Hilton).

I think a lot of people just assume that the only reason Whalen is here is the Stanford connection.  I think he could be a bigger part of the offense, he's just not getting the chances.  When he has gotten chances, he seems to produce.

  17. I don't buy that the playcalling has to revolve around a player for them to consistently make the plays asked of them.  Stokley was a guy who consistently came off the bench into the slot and would generally always make the plays asked of him.  At this point, we're not driving the ball to AJ because the opportunities he has been given have not been consistently good.

I dunno, I could be wrong, but it definitely seems that Moncrief is steadily improving and taking snaps away from AJ because he can be counted on.  AJ just does not seem to make the majority of his chances.

  18. Johnson gets horrible passes but he has dropped some balls he could've caught. Moncrief gets the perfect passes Hilton gets the "meh" passes and Johnson gets the worst especially for his height luck still overthrows him

I think they all get a mix of each.  TY has had some drops, but he's been the focal point for Luck.  Johnson, at least for me, seems to drop at least 50% of what goes his way (aside from the the Texan's game).  Moncrief has done pretty well with what he's been given, but Andre, to me, just isn't the same player he has been over the years.  I don't see him being with the team next year honestly, and I don't say that often about guys that are still under contract.

  19. Johnson has been open underneath a lot this year. To quote Gisele, he can't throw it and catch it

While you're likely right that he has been open, aside from the Texans game he has dropped a LOT of balls.  If I was Luck, I wouldn't be looking his direction either.  I was expecting Johnson to be a good catch in traffic kind of guy, and I honestly think TY is better at that and I don't really see TY as catch in traffic kind of guy.  I dunno, Johnson at this point is very underwhelming when he is given opportunities.

  20. I look at it this way... we're much better off having this problem now than in week 1 of the playoffs.  If they can pull their heads out of an unnamed orifice, we can potentially get hot and make a run.

Better than looking like aces through 17 weeks of a season, winning a playoff game or two, and then getting the snot knocked out of us in the playoffs.  As it is, we were fairly competitive against the pats this year.  If we see them in the playoffs, eliminate those bonehead mistakes, we have a shot.

But right now... yeah, pretty depressing.

  21. I honestly wonder how Good is progressing.  If he appears promising, I could see us simply going for depth.  That, or drafting a stud at C to replace Holmes.  It would appear we are set at LT and LG.  I think Reitz could be the guy at least for a season or two more if he continues to play the way he has.  Which leaves C and RG with Holmes and Thornton.  If those two progress, we could simply need added depth.  But if something falls off, I could definitely see going OL in round 1.

Personally, I would like to see us grab a stud corner, MLB, or OLB.  Our defense is getting very little pass rush.  We're getting dominated in most passing games.  Our recent rookie CB could do nicely somewhere, but I feel that Toler's injury history is just not worth putting up with anymore.  We need a durable and solid corner opposite Vontae.  And if we still keep Toler, it'd surely be nice to have two young up and comers around when he'll inevitably go down.

MLB is another area where we're simply good but not great.  If there were a Willis/Bowman type of guy hanging around where we pick, I'd be ecstatic if we went that way.  And our OLB are getting long in the tooth.  They're likely holding Mathis back for the post season, but even then something just seems wrong.  And by next year, he'll be a little more toward the decline.  Who knows, maybe Cole and Mathis play lights out at the end of the season, but thus far our pass rush is weak.

  22. Hopefully, mvbighead is not Greg Manusky because Sergio is with another team (somewhere in northern Florida, I think).

You're late to the party slick.  I already amended what I said.  I had meant Lowery.

In short, Lowery is currently a stop gap solution so I had not committed his name to memory.  I was trying to think of the safety opposite Adams.  My apologies for using the name of a previous safety.

  23. Geathers is faster than Gronk, he also has the size at 6'2 200+ lbs i just dont have much faith in his man coverage abilities just yet.

I don't think anyone really wants him to go one on one.  He should always have help over the top.  If he falters, you almost have to throw a corner at Gronk and hope for the best.  But that corner will still need help.  We don't have a person on our team aside from Vonte that could maybe keep his production limited.  And Vonte does not have the range that Gronk does.

  24. I would go more Nickel/Dime and have a defense that looks sort of like this

                         Lowery                        Adams

    Davis                                                                        Butler                               Toler

                            Sio                Geathers

           Werner/Mathis     Anderson       Parry        Walden/Cole

basically a Strong Dime package bring Geathers in as a dime backer to match up Gronk at all times and Butler in the Slot can easily help geathers double Gronk, and or Chip him. or Bring down Adams to help Geathers and Leave Lowery single high if they go three wide. I like the Front 4, now before everyone comes for my neck i have Werner starting (if he is healthy that is) because of his ability against the run. I think we all know they will come out trying to establish the run so we need our strongest run stoppers in and those 4 guys Werner, Anderson, Parry, Walden are just that. you can bring Mathis, Cole and a Newsome in on obvious passing situations. I think this defense gives us alot of flexibility.

No Jackson?  I dunno, I'd like to see how our group matches up.  Anderson/Parry/Langford seem to be a much better group than we have had.  Jackson will likely be much needed for their run game, as we have been dominated by them in the past with lesser runners.
