Yes, but with the situation we have now, not having Dorsett would mean one real wide receiver on the roster.

We all remember the San Diego game years ago. Wayne was the only receiver we had. Everyone else was injured. Aaron Moorehead looked as confused as possible. I really wouldn't want another stretch of games like that, considering we have some defensive starters coming back.

I see ....so you'd rather see a stretch of YEARS of bad defense or your prized QB getting his internal organs lacerated?  sorry...I don't mean to be a jerk ....but just trying to point out the obvious issue here.

I think that if there really was a better defensive option or OL option, Grigson would've drafted that player. Dorsett was the highest rated player on the board, and for good reason. He's a baller. If you preferred a defensive player or O-Lineman, who would you have drafted?

I think fans are upset because at the time, Dorsett was a luxury pick, (receiving corp wasn't a weakness, although with injuries could see a fast drop off in the receiver corps). We need defensive help badly, and still do.

I was on here screaming up an down about the Dorsett pick ....i hated the pick.  ...and while Dorsett looks like a guy with a high ceiling, i still don't like the pick.  ....i had lobbied on these boards for one of two guys with that pick (Eddie Goldman or Malcom Brown).  ....and to this day would still prefer either one of those guys.  ....the bottom line to me is, Dorsett isn't going to transform this team.  ....you said it correctly. ..he was a luxury pick ....but that was the mistake, we couldn't afford a luxury pick when there were far too many other positions of need to address.  ...it wasn't like there wasn't any good talent available at other positions.

I can't stand Men that hit Women. Domestic violence sucks and who knows when a guilty party is clear from committing domestic violence again. Call me crazy, even though I don't think I am, but I would like for the Colts to bring in Ray Rice to compete for a backup RB position. He could produce a good 1-2 punch ( no pun intended ) in the Colts backfield. If anyone has ever paid their dues I think it is him and he said he would donate his salary to charity. If not now, maybe once the regular season has started. What do you think ?  Nothing to lose.

I think the better question is .....why?  Why bring him in?  He wasn't that good in his last year.  .....and running backs are not that difficult to find.  ...plus he's been away from the game for an extended period of time.  .....makes no sense to me.

This is a good year to have five preseason games. New coordinators on both sides of the ball, a bunch of new OL pieces... the extra work should be beneficial.

great point!  ...we were brutally awful last year out of the gate.  If this OL gels nicely, we can start controlling games on offense and not have Luck have to carry the team on his back all the time.  ...not to mention, keep him off his back at the same time.

It is way too premature to judge the talent level of any draft pick at this point. Just like us, all it is your opinion. Every season we see first round picks who bust or underachieve and later round picks play very well. We have a few walk on players who went undrafted make teams. The Colts have a little of all of these scenarios in their history.

Agreed. ...that's exactly my point, I'm simply supporting my opinion ....i'm not presenting my opinion as fact. ...TJ Green may end up having a HOF career.  ....i certainly don't know how good or bad he'll be.  ...but just sharing my opinion.  ....not sure why people are misreading my original post.  I've simply stated why i have concerns about drafting him in RD2.  ,,,it isn't anymore complicated than that.

If you don't think it's a terrible pick, why are you picking it apart?

You could say what you are saying about every single pick outside of the top ten. Most players have a couple bad tapes. It wasn't like he was playing Western Kentucky.

He has some tremendous size and speed, he brings something to the secondary that we lack. I think it was a good pick.

It's simple...I'm picking apart the pick in order to support my lack of confidence in it being a good pick.

Considering the talent still on the board, I don't like the idea of drafting a guy that's essentially a project....not in Rd 2.  A 40 time is a terrible thing to fall in love with.  It's never been a good gauge for finding good football players.

Again, I never said it was a terrible pick.  That would be a bit arrogant on my part considering he hasn't played a single down yet.  ...but to be fair, I do have an opinion about the pick....and if I'm going to give my opinion, I feel it's necessary to support my opinion with some evidence.  I don't feel comfortable saying "I think it's a good pick" based on him having "tremendous size and speed".

You guys are really going to have to stop looking up tape from our draft picks, finding a really bad tape, and then saying its a terrible pick.

This is literally the exact same argument being used against Morrison. "I saw the Alabama tape and he was bad" so he was a bad pick.

I never said he was a terrible pick.  ...just expressing concern from what i saw.  Having a couple of bad games happens. ...but when you look at a player that looks like he's completely lost out there, it doesn't instill much confidence he's going to be a good contributor to this team.  ....great players don't look as consistently bad as he does on tape.

Sure he's a udfa and looks to be a Longshot at making the team right now. ..  but I believe he has what it takes to not only make the team but contribute this year.... he is the Type of back we have needed  for yrs now. I thought he was better than lasco,Smallwood, and Jordan Howard... the boy can flat out  toat the rock

I didn't love him, to be honest. ....he's got ability out of the backfield in the passing game ...which we could use, but i don't see him as a guy that's going to be a factor.  I actually think Todman is going to do a good job for us this year. ..he's got a gear in him that we haven't seen in a while on this team.

  9. So, i watched a couple of games last night with TJ Green.  ...first game i put on was the bama game.  ....oh brother....I'm sure he won't ever watch that tape again.  ...just an awful performance by him.  ...he was getting knocked all around the field, blew coverage twice for TDs ....and looks like he can't tackle ....field awareness was poor as well.  ....He wasn't exactly good in the Louisville game either.  ..he gets a sack where he wasn't even touched going to the QB.

I don't typically like looking at the "Highlight" tapes out there on YouTube... .but i figured maybe i'd see something that impressed me  ....but even the highlight reel didn't do him any favors.  ...i hope i'm wrong, but i'm not liking the TJ Green pick in RD2.  I'm wondering if if the size/speed thing is what got him drafted so high.....which, to me, would be a ridiculous reason to put stock in a guy. ....does the tape show the guy can play football??

Blythe: Watched a few games of Blythe and have to say i was doing cartwheels in my living room.  i think we've got ourselves a player here.  The guy knows how to get good leverage when blocking and has good instincts. ....plays hard as well. ....absolutely love this pick!  ...would love to see him at RG.  ...to be honest, i like him more than the Clark pick.

At the very least, we've made great strides at getting the OL solidified. ...and having depth to go with it.

    CJ Prosise

would love Prosise as well....just don't want to spend a 3rd rounder on him.  ..but i certainly won't kill them for grabbing him in RD3....to me, he's the best value at RB.  ...the thing is, i think there will still be very good defensive players available in RD3  ...would prefer to go defense and then go Collins in 4 or 5.

  11. 3 minutes ago, Jared Cisneros said:

I think that would be the worst pick we could possibly make. I hate this guy as a football player with a passion. He's a much worse Clowney in the fact that he takes plays off and gives effort only when he wants too, but he also has character concerns and there is no upside to taking him at 18. You can get someone like Billings or Conklin who is a better player than him and is squeaky clean at 18, rather than take an unnecessary risk on Nkedmiche who is a 3rd round pick at best.

i know there's risk there ....i don't think we take him anyway ...but i'm still a big fan of his talent.  if it weren't for the off the field stuff, he'd be in the top 10 easily.  ....Conklin is overrated and has looked pretty bad in some games. ...i do like Billings though.....wouldn't mind us picking him at all.

  12. I hope we trade back and get an extra second rounder ....but if we hold the 18th pick, i'd do cartwheels if we got Nkemdiche.  ....i know i'm in the minority here, but he's got the ability and has already demonstrated it ....it's not like he's a "potential" type of guy that hasn't reached it yet. ...he's played very big at times ....just need to get him to do it more consistently ....he's freakish ..i'm willing to take the risk with his off the field stuff as well.

  13. Another thing to add is this:  The top 5 teams last year, based on plays/drive were:

    NO

    Pit

    NE

    Car

    GB

All very good offensive teams, with the exception of Carolina.  It's not like Pit, NE, and GB didn't make long plays either.  How many times did we see Jordy taking a long pass for a TD ...or Antonio Brown getting a big play as well.  ...it's what you do to lead up to those big plays that's important.  They'll take their small chunks and then hit you hard with the big play.

I don't think we do the short stuff  very well currently.  .....that needs to change.  ....gotta keep Luck upright and sustain drives by getting smaller chunks of yards on offense.  There are just too many advantages to doing this to ignore. ....hope Pep and crew reevaluate the current philosophy.  ...it's just too hit or miss.  ...and we don't have a defense that can stay on the field that long.   They need some help as well from the offense.  They're not earth beaters, they can't be on the field for too many plays.

  14. We had the ball for 10 minutes in the 3rd Q before Gore fumbled. It was the only drive that we showed good patience.

Yes...it was refreshing to see that drive.  I'd love for us to more of that.  I meant to bring mention of that particular drive in my original post, but forgot to do so.  Thanks for pointing that out.  Even when the offense is struggling, if we simplify things down and just focus on moving the chains, we'll be able to hit our big plays when we want them.

  15. I've been killing this organization the past two years about how they're building this team.  ...and i've seen a number of people here complaining about TEs not being used in this offense.  There's a very simple reason for this and it's something i've stated after they drafted Dorsett.  ....it's called the "law of diminishing returns".  They've got too many weapons on the field at once.  ...i know that sounds kind of silly being they can't even score 10pts anymore.  ....but the truth is, with TY, AJ, Moncrief, and now the need to give Dorsett some targets, something has to give ......and as of now, the TEs are paying the price.  When they decide to use the TEs more, it will only mean some of the receivers will have to take a back seat.  ...you can't feed everyone at once!

another thing to add to this:  Colts averaged 5.7 plays/drive last year......that was 9th fewest ....who averaged shorter drives? Take a look:

    Oak

    Jax

    TB

    Ten

    Buf

    STL

    Cle

    Was

The only reason these teams had fewer plays/drive is because they were all bad offensively.  We had one of the top offenses last year and still only averaged 5.7 plays/drive.  ....of course, the good news is that the 5.7 reflects our big play offense.  ...but again, less opportunities to get everyone involved with this kind of offensive philosophy.

I'd like to see more sustained drives going forward. ....There are a lot of new faces in this offense and young players having to play bigger roles. ....we need to simplify things and work the shorter routes and focus more on moving the chains and getting this team in to a rhythm offensively.  Then start expanding things over time.  It'll come together eventually.

  16. I thought by drafting Dorsett we were going to pose mismatch problems???  ..right???  ...can't cover Hilton, AJ, the TEs, and Dorsett right???  ....i hope this organization has learned a much needed lesson.  They have no clue how to build a championship caliber team.  We've been overrated for the past couple of years.  .....We've benefited from a bad division and have relied way too much on the QB.  This organization thinks they're making Luck's job easier by giving him all sorts of toys to play with. .....just clueless!!

They were handed a gift when they drafted Luck ....they've now taken that gift, put it in front of the car and have driven over it with their front tire.

The saddest part is, in a few weeks when we're 2-2, they'll think everything's fixed. ...and then the Pats will remind them again where they really are.

  17. wow....i'm a bit surprised with all the initial support for keeping Hilton.  Even without Hilton, i still think we would be better than the majority of the league at the WR position.  ....we would still have AJ, and 2 quality receiving TEs ....not to mention Moncrief...who should take a step up this year as well ....now throw in Dorsett.  ..almost seems like a no-brainer to me to get a stout defensive lineman ....especially since our defense gets destroyed by the Pats every year.    ......we've got AJ for a couple of years....which will allow Moncrief and Dorsett to grow up in this offense. .....we don't need Hilton long term.  ....get what you can for him now.  ....although "Luck12-to-Hilton13" made a fair point about the Jets not really being a good partner for this trade ...since they've already got Marshall and Decker.

I'd hate to see us pay Hilton #1 money though.  ....i guess that's what's also driving this question for me.

  18. After wanting to vomit with the Dorsett pick, i felt like we wouldn't have to resign Hilton.....I like Hilton a lot....we've gotten a lot of value out of him, but i don't view him as a true #1 guy and I'd have no problem swapping him for Wilkerson.  ....not sure if the economics would hinder such a deal from taking place, but if it wouldn't.....would you do the deal?  ....if we're all in on getting to the super bowl this year, i think having Wilkerson would give us a better shot at getting there. ......of course, this is just wishful thinking on my part and there's no reason to believe such a trade is even being conceived.

...before i get killed for the Dorsett and vomit comment, realize i'm not knocking Dorsett one bit. ....i really like him as a player.  ....just thought picking him made zero sense.

  19. First of all, if my response was to you, I would have quoted you....I was talking about the general whiny attitude of fans who don't get what they want...which were all over this thread. Curious, did you only want those who agree with you to post in your thread?.

I am not going to try and discuss each aspect of your response to me. I will just say that I trust nearly every fans opinion here a bout as much as a bent screwdriver when it comes to assessing talent and what choices should be made in a war room. So when a thread that stems from a stance of being incensed about the selection of a player by men to know more about this than anyone here by so far of a margin that is nullifies discussion...and that thread is filled with the moans of woe by many, I give my opinion. My opinion is that it is largely unnecessary fussing. As far as you being rough, I can handle it. No warnings needed.

The player isn't my issue.  The point is...if Dorsett is a very good player, the overall improvement of the team is marginal at best. The Colts get their teeth knocked in every year by the Pats....and it's not because they were missing a second receiver.  The Colts, compared to the rest of the NFL, already stacked up favorably to almost of other NFL team in the WR department.  There was very little to gain by drafting this kid last night....regardless of how good he is.

This isn't about me knowing how to evaluate talent better than our front office people. ....it's a criticism of their philosophy....which i have every right to bash. ...they continue to lose to the same team year in and year out....in embarrassing fashion.  ....it's like they haven't learned one bit from those games.

I'm going to pull like heck for Dorsett.  .....seems like a great kid.  ....but he's not what this team needed.

I sure hope 8 months from now you make me eat my words though!

  20. Thank you so much....I believe I'll join you for some awesome munching  You owned this thread. Absolutely put it right on the head. And as Pony Boy eloquently stated, "I like to think the Pats war room desperately wanted Dorsett and were shocked when he went off the board.  Who knows, maybe we ruined their night." I picture Tommy throwing his water bottle when yet again, the pats fail to get him a high round pick to throw to.

As a 40 year fan, I have perspective as an old guy that most of these youngsters have not yet faced. I am talking about a period of 5 to ten years or more of losing football. They complain because for many, they have only been a fan since Peyton was drafted and all they know is winning. All there is left for them is SB titles. But for those of us who have hung in there through teams that were just simply not good for a long time, this sustained excellence that will soon span 2 decades...2 decades!! is absolutely NFL heaven. So whether you are a fan that backs the team with all they do as you believe they are all doing their best to bring us a consistently good product, year after year...or you are a fan that wants the team to do what they want...and use this board as a venting cesspool...we each get to decide how we want to enjoy our fan experience.

It chuckles me to wake up early this morning, knowing that the Colts turned over every stone to create the best draft board they could, and stuck to their plan, and ensured our WR depth. Is it possible that fans have forgotten just how lame duck we were when we could not get open to get first downs against the Pats. Have they forgotten how the Pats game plan took TY out of the mix and we could not keep the offense on the field? Using the run to set up the pass, is the same as using the pass to set up the run. Yes, when we got our SB title, it was the fear of our passing game that helped that ground game in the PO's. Weren't the Pats last season better against the run than they were against the pass....we just were not able to get them small and fast on defense because we simply did not have the weapons? I could be wrong, but that is what I remember. In addition, why is it that fans just cannot understand that where a player is taken, does not rank his ability? the NFL is filled with guys from EVERY ROUND IN THE DRAFT. So we will only be helped by the first round selection? Seriously? It's almost as if they need Grigson to hold their hand, take them into his private room, show them where they are going to take defenders in this draft, give them a cookie and some warm milk, and dry their tears.

War Grigson, war weapons that help ensure 6 or less in the box, and war sanity.

Since i'm the original poster of this thread, I'll assume this response was directed at me.  I've been a Colts fan since 1979....the days of Bert Jones ....and I've lived through the brutal periods with this team as well.  I only mention this so that you know i'm not just a fan from the Peyton era.  ....and i know these winning seasons we've had from the Peyton to Luck era should never be taken for granted.  With that in mind, when you have a team that's in position to be a super bowl contender, you have to make the most of the opportunities you have to build the team appropriately because you never know how quickly the window can close.  I'm very greatful to have experienced this team's success the past 18 years, but considering we had a once in a generation type of QB playing for us, we've underachieved.  ....winning seasons are very nice to have...and i appreciate them.... but greatness is achieved when you actually win championships.  ....and that's what i want for my team.  They've had an all-world HOF QB along with 2 HOF WRs and 1 Super Bowl to show for it.....I'm sorry, but for as many times as they've been in the hunt for a Super Bowl, they should have done better.

I have not forgotten how badly the Pats kicked our tails in the playoffs...i remember how they held the ball for over 37 minutes against us.  I remember how, even after getting killed by Blount once before, they allowed him 148 yards and 3 TDs.  Mind you, it's not like it was a surprise they were going to run the ball. ....and we still had no answers for them.  It was an utter embarrassment.

I know there are several more rounds to go, but a great opportunity was missed last night to change the defensive culture of this football team.  It's not like they are one player away on defense.  They need a bunch of guys!  ...and you can't afford to let good defensive players slip by like last night......especially since they are so desperate for them.

My anger/dissappointment is driven by my desire for this team to achieve greatness!  ....not just winning seasons!

I have no issues with Dorsett as a player.  He's a nice playmaker, but is not the guy they need right now.  They've operated in free agency like they're ready to take the next step and win a Super Bowl.... But they don't have the O-Line or D-Line to support the infrastructure they've built to this point.  ....and make no mistake about it, this is the reason why we're always on the back of our heals against the Pats.....and why we can't get by them!

They only have so many picks at their disposal and they can't be wasted on a WR, albeit, a nice one.  They continue to build this team from the outside in.  ..it's a joke and not the way to sustain long term "greatness"!  ...don't take my word for it, just look at history and learn from it.

By the way, I have no desire to make the goal of my draft to take the player, the Pats want, away from them.  What I really want, is to build a team that can actually beat the Pats in a real game.  ...but if stealing their guy away from them makes you happy, then good for you.  Let's see how much you like him when he's standing on the sidelines for 40 minutes with a neck injury from watching their running game go up and down the field on us.

I know i'm being rough here, but it stems from my dissapointment in this organization's philosophy for building a great championship team.   ...."Build The Monster" they say, but they have no clue how to do so.  Last night was evidence of that.

  21. Lol @ people who say that this pick won't make us better.

I would have rather picked a player at a position of greater need, but this thread is full of gross overreactions.

Dorsett is a great receiver to get for a cheap few years. He will be a huge part of the offense in time. Hilton, Dorsett, and Moncrief can be the best group in the league after AJ is done...

I trust our FO when it comes to evaluating WR talent... Hopefully we can fill those needs tomorrow.

"The less a man makes declarative statements the less apt he is to look foolish in retrospect"

The issue isn't whether Dorsett is a good player or not.  If he scores 10 TDs this year, it's still a bad pick.  ....we have too many receivers now (including the TEs).  Is Luck going to throw 50 TDs now? ...probably not, if he throws 40 again, then all that means is the other guys are catching less TDs.  So, as i stated in a previous thread, it's like the law of diminishing returns.  ....i like Dorsett's playmaking ability, but we haven't really made this team better with this pick.

  22. Do you not understand the basics of "Best Player Available"? Just wondering...

This is the only thing needed to justify this pick:

For what it's worth, Grigson said Dorsett was the highest-rated player on the #Colts board. And it wasn't close.

    — George Bremer (@gmbremer)

    May 1, 2015

This pick was an abomination.  ....no other way to put it.  We've got TY, AJ, two talented recieving TEs, and an up and coming receiver in Moncrief ..now we're adding another receiver to that group......Have you ever heard of the "law of diminishing returns"?  Please google it.
